Octo Wins Agile Development Contract to Provide Enhanced Geospatial Intelligence Capabilities to the Intelligence Community

Octo announced it has been awarded a 2.5 year contract with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) to provide geospatial product development under the GEOINT Services, Data Services, Core Delivery Teams (CDT) contract. This contract supports the NGA GEOINT Services effort to build open-source geospatial capabilities for the broader National System for Geospatial Intelligence (NSG) community supporting military operations, intelligence analysis, disaster response, and commercial navigation.“Octo is passionate about supporting the NGA GEOINT Services initiative,” said Jim Vant, Executive Vice President for Defense and Intelligence at Octo. “Since 2011, Octo has helped NGA disseminate our nation’s GEOINT data to warfighters, analysts, relief workers, and others who depend on this information. We look forward to supporting NGA and advancing its mission through the CDT contract.” Octo’s contract will support modern Agile product development of three geospatial capabilities – an open source suite of geospatial big data tools, a geospatial data packaging tool, and a vector tile streaming solution.“Octo has provided software development using Agile and true DevSecOps since 2011,” said Sam Stollar, Octo’s Vice President for Intelligence and Air Force Programs. “This new program will allow us to continue that support to NGA while also helping to enhance the availability of open source geospatial analytic capabilities.”On the CDT project, Octo will work jointly with the government to design, develop, and deploy customer-driven geospatial capabilities. Octo will use its experience with Pivotal, user experience design, and modern software development to deliver value faster to NGA’s critical customers.

Congressman Thompson Joins Clarion Leaders to Celebrate the Community’s Development

Congressman Glenn Thompson (Pa.-15) joined Clarion officials, the Clarion Blueprint Communities® team, local businesses and community organizations for a tour of downtown Clarion and a celebration of the borough’s community development progress.Clarion’s revitalization gained momentum in 2015 when it joined Blueprint Communities, an FHLBank Pittsburgh initiative that provides emerging communities with the training and resources to facilitate lasting community development. Since then, Clarion’s Blueprint Communities team has worked to revitalize the area around Main Street to attract new businesses and visitors, increase affordable housing and enhance public spaces.
“It is exciting to see the growth happening here in Clarion,” said Congressman Thompson. “I applaud the hard work of the many organizations that have come together to help revitalize the borough, including Clarion’s leaders, FHLBank Pittsburgh and the local businesses and citizens who strive to make their community better. Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Awards Grants to Five Organizations Dedicated to Empowering the CF Community

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation today announced the recipients of its fourth annual Impact Grants, which provide funding to people with cystic fibrosis (CF) who are leading unique projects in their communities to help and empower people with the disease and their families and loved ones. CF is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time, and ultimately causes premature death. Thanks to improvements in treatments and care, outcomes for people with CF have improved dramatically, but managing the disease requires a complex and demanding care regimen and significant social support.
Advances in treatments and care led by the CF Foundation have added decades of life and unprecedented hope for the future for people living with CF. “Living with a chronic disease such as CF can be challenging, and people who experience those challenges have special insights about ways to connect and serve this community,” said Drucy Borowitz, M.D., vice president of Community Partnerships at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “Adults living with CF and their family members and friends are bringing new energy and perspective to help people with CF in their day-to-day life. The Foundation is honored to provide resources through the Impact Grant program to support bringing their visions to life.”

Governor Kemp Signs Historic SB 157 at Community Bankers Association of Georgia Headquarters

Governor Brian P. Kemp signed SB 157 into law at the Community Bankers Association of Georgia (CBA) headquarters today before a group of community bankers from across the state.
SB 157 allows community banks, many of which are located in rural Georgia, to accept local government’s funds and allows these banks in turn to reinvest and loan monies back into their own communities and spur economic activity. Increased lending will spur business growth, jobs, and boost statewide economic activity. SB 157 was unanimously passed by the legislature during the 2019 legislative session.CBA’s President and Chief Executive Officer John McNair stated, “We greatly appreciate Senator John Kennedy (R), Macon and Representative Dale Washburn (R), Macon, for guiding the bill through this legislative process. We are also thankful for our partnerships with National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB), the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA), and the Association of County Commissioners (ACCG) in making this bill a possibility. SB 157 will change people’s lives, and all of us at CBA are proud, honored and humbled to have had the opportunity to impact Georgia’s community banking industry in this most positive manner!” Community banks are the primary providers of credit and banking services throughout the state and play a vital role in helping the Kemp administration fulfill its objective of further developing and growing small businesses in Georgia. This bill will allow community banks to compete with large, mostly out-of-state banks, for local municipal accounts and deposits. Georgia’s community banks will be able to dramatically increase lending in their local markets thereby helping small businesses start and grow, funding homeownership as well as a variety of agriculture and consumer loans.Governor Brian P. AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana and Governing Present Putting the Community Back in Healthcare

AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana, a Healthy Louisiana Medicaid managed care organization and part of the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies, and Governing, the nation’s leading media platform covering politics, policy and management for state and local government leaders, have collaborated to release Putting the Community Back in Healthcare, a roadmap for improving communication and engagement in support of local communities. The paper is available for download from Governing.com.In 2018, AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana hosted two roundtables in collaboration with Governing at the plan’s Shreveport and New Orleans Community Wellness Centers to explore the issues of communication and coordination among stakeholders in delivering effective community health. This paper highlights some of the important conversations that took place at the roundtables and spotlights examples of success that emerged from the events themselves, as well as from follow-up conversations with experts throughout the country.

Know the Truth Announces Fall 2018 Community Forums

As part of their fall 2018 series, Know the Truth, the substance-use prevention program of Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge, will host three forums designed to educate community leaders, parents and concerned adults about teen substance use. The events will give community members an opportunity to hear firsthand how substance use can affect their families, offer participants a chance to learn more about current substance use trends and signs of use through hands-on experiences with Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge’s interactive exhibit “Cracking the Code on Teen Substance Use,” and provide participants with tools to prevent youth substance use. This is an important need considering the vast majority of Americans who struggle with addiction started smoking, drinking, or using drugs before age 18.The Nicollet County forum, taking place Oct. 3 will also include a simultaneous program for young people from grades seven through twelve, where Know the Truth presenters will share their personal struggles with substance use. This peer-to-peer format allows students to open up and helps Know the Truth bridge the gap between the students and the parents and community leaders who support them.
Additionally, two of the forums – Nicollet County on Oct. 3 and Ramsey County on Nov. 1 – will include a drug take back event. Participants will learn how to safeguard their medicine cabinet and be given the opportunity to properly dispose of any unused or unwanted prescriptions. This is critical because 72 percent of people who misuse prescriptions took them from friends or family.

Community Valley Bank Buying Southern California Branch from Umpqua Bank

Community Valley Bank (“CVB”), a wholly owned subsidiary bank of CMUV Bancorp (OTC Pink: CMUV) (the “Company”), today announced the signing of a purchase and assumption agreement to acquire a branch location from Roseburg, Oregon based Umpqua Bank (“Umpqua”).The branch location in Borrego Springs, CA with approximately $35 million in deposits is the only full-service branch location in the city of Borrego Springs. The branch location was originally acquired by Umpqua as part of its acquisition of Sterling Financial Corporation, completed in April 2014. The branch will begin operating under the CVB name as CVB’s fifth branch location in Southern California immediately following the close of the transaction. The deposit premium is estimated to be 3.25% of deposits acquired.“We are excited to add this branch location to our footprint in Southern California and deploy our growing capital base into a new market,” said Jon Edney, President and CEO of CVB. “This transaction will allow us to extend our personalized service and products to the Borrego Springs community. Savonix and Community Health Resource Center (CHRC) Announce Free Local Cognitive Screening Program in San Francisco

Savonix, the developer of the first mobile evidence-based digital neuro-cognitive assessment and brain health platform, announced today a partnership with Community Health Resource Center (CHRC), a non-profit and affiliate of California Pacific Medical Center and Sutter Health, to offer free cognitive screenings beginning on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, as part of current community-based health screenings to the San Francisco community.The ongoing screenings will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. every first and third Wednesday of the month at 2100 Webster Street, a CHRC pilot site. The screenings are planned to expand to four additional sites throughout San Francisco within the next few months.The Savonix assessment, which evaluates critical cognitive data, will be administered by the Savonix virtual clinician and delivered within healthcare settings to patients and their providers. These community screenings will be overseen by the nursing staff at CHRC to provide educational materials about healthcare-related concerns, brain health and caregiving.The cognitive tests will be a 30-minute, digital assessment that consists of gold standard neuropsychological tasks. CHRC currently offers free, health screens to the local San Francisco community, that include cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and BMI evaluations and is looking forward to expanding its free community screens to include cognition.“Savonix is excited to partner with Community Health Resource Center, and serve as the digital cognitive screening platform for five different healthcare screening sites throughout San Francisco,” said Savonix CEO, Dr. Mylea Charvat. “Through the Savonix Mobile App, providers are able to assess, track and understand a patient’s cognitive health and gain valuable insights into the role of cognition in a wide variety of diseases and disorders. L’intelligenza collettiva è definita come una intelligenza condivisa o di gruppo, emergente dalla collaborazione, dagli sforzi collettivi, e dalla concorrenza di molti agenti (umani o altro). La disciplina si sviluppa in una ricerca interdisciplinare, che coinvolge l’informatica, le scienze cognitive, le scienze politiche, l’economia, l’antropologia, la teoria dell’organizzazione, la giurisprudenza, la sociobiologia, e le scienze di rete. Inoltre, la ricerca e le applicazioni dei big data creano nuove opportunità per sviluppare la progettazione di nuove linee per la crescita dell’intelligenza collettiva verso molti sistemi complessi e organizzazioni. Lo scopo principale della Scuola è quello di mostrare ai partecipanti i temi e gli strumenti più rilevanti a supporto di nuovi scenari di ricerca e di applicazione includendo l’intelligenza collettiva, concentrandosi su due temi principali: fenomeni della folla (ad esempio, crowdsourcing, gestione della folla) e resilienza della comunità (l’abilità costante di una comunità di utilizzare le risorse disponibili per rispondere, resistere, e uscire da situazioni avverse).In occasione della scuola, inoltre, la Fondazione Alessandro Volta organizza l’incontro aperto al pubblico “Intelligenza Collettiva e complessità urbana: nuovi scenari e nuove opportunità” che si terrà mercoledì 20 settembre presso la Sala Stemmi di Palazzo Cernezzi a Como. European Maritime Day 2017

bruxelles (1)European Maritime Day (EMD) is the annual meeting point for Europe’s maritime community to network, discuss and plan joint action. The EMD 2017 conference and exhibition will be held on 18-19 May 2017 in Poole, UK. In preparation for EMD, an INFO DAY meeting for Maritime Stakeholders will take place in Brussels, on 25 October 2016, at 14:00.
The INFO DAY organised by the European Commission (DG Maritime Affairs and Fisheries) in cooperation with the Borough of Poole and the United Kingdom’s Permanent Representation in Brussels, will take place at the Residence of the British Ambassador, rue Ducale 17, Brussels, Belgium.
EMD is specifically targeted at maritime stakeholders from across Europe: policymakers, industry representatives, government departments and agencies, NGOs, academics and researchers, etc. This European conference will be the centerpiece of Poole Maritime Festival, which will run from 15-21 May, and which will also be dedicated to engaging the general public celebrating Poole and Dorset’s local maritime heritage and environment. As in previous years the European Commission invites all interested stakeholders to get actively involved in shaping the event by proposing their workshops. Three different workshop formats are possible: a) Policy Seminar, b) Good Practice Workshops and c) Project presentations.

Governor Tom Wolf and Jay Wright, head coach of the NCAA National Championship Villanova team, held an “It’s On Us PA” press conference to discuss the importance of combatting sexual assault on college campuses. “It’s On Us PA” is a statewide campaign that invites everyone to play a role in ending sexual assault. Pennsylvania was the first state in the nation to launch an “It’s On Us” campaign.“As we all know, a man in a high-profile assault case at Stanford University was recently found guilty of rape but received as his sentence only six months in county jail with probation. Meanwhile, his victim will have to live the rest of her life with the feeling of violation and danger that he caused,” said Governor Wolf. “These kinds of leniencies send a message to the community that we are not serious about preventing sexual assault. These kinds of leniencies are unacceptable. ‘It’s On Us PA’ is delivering that message across the commonwealth.” “At Villanova University, love and respect are essential to the life of our community. We believe that it is everyone’s responsibility to create a safe and caring community and prevent sexual violence,” said Villanova Men’s Basketball Coach Jay Wright. “This means that we step up and step in during the moments that matter. It’s on us, Nova Nation!”“It’s On Us PA” is a statewide campaign that invites everyone to play a role in ending sexual assault. Building off the momentum of the national “It’s On Us” movement launched by President Obama and Vice President Biden in 2014, “It’s On Us PA” engages education leaders from school superintendents to college presidents, as well as students, teachers, faculty, staff, civic leaders, families, and communities, to make a personal and public pledge to play a role in preventing, addressing, and responding effectively to sexual violence.“Pennsylvania must take a stand against sexual assault, and that’s what the ‘It’s On Us PA’ campaign is all about. We, as a commonwealth, must make clear that sexual assault is completely unacceptable and goes against our ideals as Pennsylvanians,” said Governor Wolf. “I am determined to make Pennsylvania a shining example to the rest of the world of what committed citizens can do to make our world better. It is truly on all of us to accomplish this goal.” The pledge says that “It’s On Us” to: recognize that non-consensual sex is sexual assault; identify situations in which sexual assault may occur; intervene in situations where consent has not or cannot be given; create an environment in which sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported. The goals of “It’s On Us PA” are to:
Improve awareness, prevention, reporting, and response systems in schools, colleges and universities to better serve all students.
Remove/reduce barriers that prevent survivors from reporting and/or accessing vital resources by creating a more consistent, empowering reporting process for student survivors of gender based violence.
Demonstrate significant, proactive, and sustainable leadership to change campus culture by challenging Pennsylvania’s education leaders – including college and university presidents, superintendents – as well as students, teachers, faculty, staff, families, and communities to pledge to improve their institutions’ climate.
Since the campaign was launched in January, over 800 people – including representation from nearly 200 schools across Pennsylvania – have taken the pledge and signed on to the campaign. The launch of “It’s On Us PA” also kicked off a year of action, in which the Wolf Administration, along with the Pennsylvania Commission for Women, worked with community leaders and stakeholders across the commonwealth to develop state-level policy recommendations to address the pressing issue of sexual assault in our schools and postsecondary institutions.After gathering feedback from leaders in education across the state, Governor Wolf proposed $1 million in the 2016-17 budget to invest in community partnerships that help prevent sexual violence and remove barriers to reporting in schools across Pennsylvania. Governor Wolf also directed the Department of Education to provide support and technical assistance by administering this program and aligning state-level resources to better support school districts and postsecondary institutions.
The Wolf Administration will also introduce a legislative package designed to ensure that a student’s education does not include harassment or violence, and that K-12 and postsecondary schools are well-equipped to prevent, respond, and address these issues. The legislative package will target the myriad of statutes and regulations that cover different types of harassment and violence in order to identify opportunities to make clear that Pennsylvania school districts and postsecondary institutions cannot – and will not – tolerate actions that jeopardize the health and safety of students.

Community rights widely abused by cobalt mining in Democratic Republic of Congo

On April 19, the GoodElectronics Network will organise – in collaboration with SOMO, Friends of the Earth and Stop Child Labour Coalition – a roundtable meeting entitled Responsible Mining for Electronics, which will include representatives of the electronics industry, civil society organisations, SOMO’s fellow Congolese researchers, and experts and policy makers to discuss the problems caused by cobalt mining in DRC.
Research by SOMO reveals that serious human rights violations and environmental pollution are happening in Democratic Republic of Congo as a result of cobalt mining, including water pollution and forced evictions. SOMO’s research shows that these problems are structural. Cobalt is used in rechargeable batteries for smart phones and laptops, and SOMO is calling on electronics companies to take responsibility for the way cobalt in their supply chain is mined. On Tuesday April 19 civil society organisations, companies and electronics manufacturers will meet to discuss the issues surrounding the extraction of minerals such as cobalt at a meeting at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
SOMO has worked with three Congolese organisations to conduct spot investigations of the harmful effects of mining operations of seven Congolese and foreign companies.About half of all mined cobalt comes from DRC, mainly from the province of Katanga. The mining takes place close to towns and villages. Local communities regularly are cut off from their farmland and water sources near mines, without having had a say in the matter. There are several examples of forced relocations of entire villages. Inhabitants of the village Kishiba for example, were forced to move to make way for Frontier, a cobalt and copper mine. Their new homes in Kimfumpa lack the most basic of services such as clean water, fertile farmland, schools and health care.
Cities such as Lubumbashi and Likasi face serious air pollution because of the thousands of trucks that travel to and from the mines throughout the day. Chronic exposure to such dusts can lead to severe lung diseases. Water is unfit for human consumption and agriculture because soil and water in the immediate vicinity of the mines are polluted by discharges of wastewater.
Nobody protects the Congolese people. Congolese mining legislation requires mining companies to initiate and maintain constructive dialogue with communities affected by their projects, but this is almost never done. The Congolese government fails to give its citizens sufficient protection against the abusive practices of large companies.
Electronics sector involvement needed. Around 40 percent of the world’s cobalt is used for rechargeable batteries. The electronics industry is a major user of such batteries, making electronics companies partly responsible for the problems that evolve from the extraction of cobalt. (photo: cobalt blues)
