IBM and Fraunhofer bring Quantum Computing to Germany

Stuttgart, Munich, Berlin – The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Europe’s leading organization for applied research, and IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced today the signing of the agreement aimed at advancing quantum computing in Germany. The collaboration gives companies and research institutions access to IBM quantum computers in Germany and the USA under the umbrella of a nationwide Fraunhofer competence network. The aim is to research the technology, application scenarios and algorithms while generating competence development and competitive advantages for the local economy and science.
As part of the collaboration, an IBM Q System One quantum computer will be installed in a IBM computer center near Stuttgart. The system is scheduled to go into operation in early 2021 and will be the first of its kind in Europe. Fraunhofer plans to bring together established partners from research and industry under the umbrella of a research infrastructure of Fraunhofer institutes, which will work together in a centrally coordinated national Fraunhofer competence network for quantum computing.
This network has set itself the goal of further developing and transferring application-oriented quantum computing strategies under complete data sovereignty of European law and will initially be represented by competence centers in expected six German states – Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate, Berlin, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia. Currently, more than ten Fraunhofer Institutes are already working on various fields of quantum technology.As early as April 1, 2020, interested companies and research institutions will have access to the world’s largest group of quantum computers in the US-based IBM Quantum Computation Center under the umbrella of the nationwide Fraunhofer competence network. The IBM Quantum Computation Center currently comprises 15 systems and is located in the US state of New York. Under the terms of the agreement, IBM will offer Fraunhofer technical support and assistance in using the IBM Quantum systems.
IBM System Q One is optimized to ensure the quality, stability, reliability and reproducibility of multi-qubit applications. Due to these factors and the resulting high quantum volume (a measure of the performance of a quantum computer), the IBM System Q One enables state-of-the-art research for concrete application scenarios in science and industry. In 2016, IBM was the first company to make universal quantum computers accessible via the cloud. An active community of more than 200,000 users have run hundreds of billions of executions on real IBM Quantum hardware, and have published more than 200 research papers based on these experiments. IBM is also the first company to have commercial clients via the IBM Q Network, a community of more than 100 businesses, start-ups, research labs, education institutions and governments working with IBM to advance quantum computing.

New Consortium to Develop a Common Computing Platform for Autonomous Vehicles

Leading companies from the automotive and computing industries announced today a collaborative effort toward making fully self-driving vehicles a reality. The new Autonomous Vehicle Computing Consortium (AVCC), officially launched at Arm TechCon in San Jose, brings together industry leaders from automotive, automotive supply, semiconductor and computing to serve as the leading organization for autonomous computing expertise. Together with the consortium’s growing membership, the initial AVCC members Arm, Bosch, Continental, DENSO, General Motors, NVIDIA, NXP Semiconductors and Toyota will collaborate to help solve some of the most significant challenges to deploy self-driving vehicles at scale.The first step toward achieving this vision and the common objective of AVCC is to develop a set of recommendations of a system architecture and a computing platform that reconciles the performance requirements of autonomous systems with the vehicle-specific requirements and limitations in terms of size, temperature range, power consumption and safety. IBM and Fraunhofer team up to promote quantum computing in Europe

IBM (NYSE: IBM) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Europe’s leading organization for applied research, announced an agreement to set up a partnership that will advance research in the field of quantum computing. The aim of this cooperation is to develop expertise and new strategies for the use of quantum computing in industry and for applied processes.Under the terms of the joint initiative, an IBM Q System One quantum computer is to be installed at a German location. It will be the first facility of its kind in Europe. The IBM Q System One is designed to perform multi-qubit operations to an extremely high level of quality, stability, reliability and reproducibility. Le Le opportunità date dall’edge computing e dall’ Internet of Things (IoT) per i partner di canale stanno per raggiungere il loro massimo picco grazie alla crescita esponenziale di queste tecnologie. Secondo proiezioni di IDC, la spesa per l’IoT raggiungerà 1,3 trilioni di dollari entro il 2020, e il 43% dei dati dell’Internet of Things sarà processato a livello di edge, alla periferia della rete. Il report dell’analista prevede inoltre che il numero di “cose connesse” raggiungerà i 30 miliardi nel 2020 per salire a 80 miliardi nei successivi 25 anni. Un trend che pone le basi per notevoli opportunità di crescita per il canale.I Channel Partner, in particolare gli integratori di rete, i Managed Service Provider (MSP) e i provider con esperienza in SaaS (Software as a Service) e servizi hosted, si trovano nella posizione ideale per cogliere le opportunità create da queste tecnologie. Ciò elimina i problemi di latenza, aumenta l’affidabilità e consente di prendere decisioni in tempo reale. Frost & Sullivan: Cloud computing aziendale in crescita, grazie ai nuovi lavoratori mobili

cloudCon la maturazione delle tecnologie cloud e l’aumento della consapevolezza dei loro benefici, sempre più organizzazioni in Europa e Stati Uniti stanno implementando soluzioni cloud per ridurre i costi IT e ottimizzare le operazioni. Le aziende statunitensi sono più avanti delle controparti europee nei livelli di adozione del cloud, a causa della maggiore esposizione alla tecnologia e delle migliori condizioni macro-economiche. Similmente, le grandi aziende stanno adottando tecnologie cloud più rapidamente rispetto alle piccole e medie imprese, a causa della necessità di ottimizzare l’infrastruttura di comunicazione esistente, più grande e complessa. Una nuova analisi di Frost & Sullivan, intitolata “Future of Cloud Computing Technologies in Enterprises in the United States and Europe”, rileva che quasi sei utenti di servizi cloud su dieci (57%) sono identificati come ‘dipendenti dal cloud’, mentre il 43% resta ‘in ritardo sul cloud’ o con un’opinione sfavorevole del cloud. Tra gli intervistati, circa il 70% degli statunitensi e il 56% degli europei che attualmente utilizzano tecnologie cloud trovano queste soluzioni altamente efficaci, indicando che l’esposizione a queste tecnologie può portare ad una maggiore adozione. “La maggior parte degli utenti dipendenti dal cloud si trova negli Stati Uniti, specialmente in ambito produttivo, nelle aziende con 20-500 dipendenti e nelle aziende con oltre 10.000 dipendenti, – afferma Karolina Olszewska, analista di Frost & Sullivan. – In futuro, tuttavia, si prevede che i decisori IT negli Stati Uniti, il settore governativo e le piccole imprese mostreranno l’aumento più significativo nell’adozione di tecnologie cloud.” Oltre la metà delle aziende intervistate in Europa e Stati Uniti ha già spostato il 50% o più delle proprie soluzioni di comunicazione aziendale sul cloud. Entro i prossimi tre anni, è probabile che quasi un quarto migrerà il 76% o più delle proprie soluzioni di comunicazione al cloud. In entrambe le regioni, i server email e le app collaborative sono in cima alla lista delle soluzioni di comunicazione aziendale trasferite al cloud. Tuttavia, solo il 27% degli utenti di servizi cloud ha spostato i propri sistemi di telefonia al cloud. Nuovo supercomputer

Il Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) di Garching, Germania, ha siglato un contratto con IBM per sviluppare e costruire un nuovo supercomputer di tipo “general purpose”, dotato di processori Intel® Xeon® della prossima generazione, per supportare la ricerca scientifica avanzata. Il sistema utilizzerà una tecnologia innovativa di raffreddamento ad acqua calda, per consumare il 40 percento di energia in meno rispetto a una macchina equiparabile raffreddata ad aria.
Denominato “SuperMUC”, il nuovo sistema fa parte dell’infrastruttura di HPC Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) utilizzata dai ricercatori e dalle organizzazioni industriali di tutta Europa. Consentirà alla comunità scientifica dell’LRZ di fare test, effettuare esperimenti e previsioni. Il progetto sarà finanziato congiuntamente dal governo federale tedesco e dallo stato federato della Baviera.  SuperMUC associa il raffreddamento ad acqua – che in genere elimina il calore con un’efficienza 4.000 volte superiore rispetto all’aria – a processori Intel efficienti dal punto di vista energetico e a una gestione dei sistemi dinamica, orientata alle applicazioni, per ridurre ulteriormente il consumo di energia.  Dato che i sistemi di HPC aumentano costantemente le prestazioni, è essenziale che i miglioramenti in termini di efficienza energetica tengano il passo. Rispetto a questo scenario, LRZ, IBM e Intel stanno lavorando per ottenere un nuovo approccio più sostenibile.   In particolare, il team di sviluppo IBM di Boeblingen contribuirà con la sua competenza nell’area dell’efficienza energetica, che è stata dimostrata in progetti equiparabili, come il supercomputer IBM Aquasar, sviluppato dai laboratori IBM di Boeblingen e Zurigo.
Intel collabora con IBM sulla concezione di alta efficienza energetica, oltre a fornire i potentissimi processori che alimentano la macchina. I carichi di lavoro di SuperMUC saranno gestiti dai processori Intel ad alte prestazioni,  senza ricorrere ad acceleratori speciali. L’LRZ, da parte sua, contrinuirà con la propria esperienza nelle attività operative e nello sfruttamento di sistemi di supercomputing di alta gamma.
Il  LRZ è il centro di calcolo per le università di Monaco e per l’Accademia Bavarese delle Scienze. Si occupa della rete di dati scientifici a Monaco, offre una varietà di servizi dati e fornisce strutture informatiche di alta gamma per la comunità scientifica in Germania e oltre.

ONFI Introduces New 2.3

Santa Clara, Calif. The Open NAND Flash Interface (ONFI) Working Group, the organization dedicated to simplifying integration of NAND Flash memory into consumer electronic devices, computing platforms, and industrial systems, today introduced its new ONFI 2.3 specification, which includes the EZ-NAND protocol. EZ-NAND, which stands for error correction code (ECC) Zero NAND, was designed to remove the burden of the host controller to keep pace with the fast changing ECC requirements of NAND technology. In today’s NAND implementations, the host controller must assume responsibility for all NAND management functions, including block management, wear leveling, and ECC. With ECC being almost solely dependent on the NAND technology and not the system, EZ-NAND will alleviate the issue of controller manufacturers having to implement and keep up with the rapidly changing NAND ECC requirements.
The ONFI Working Group is dedicated to simplifying integration of NAND Flashmemory into consumer electronics (CE) applications and computing platforms. Before the advancements made by the working group, use of NAND Flash in these end-use applications was hampered by the lack of sufficient standardization. To support a new NAND Flash component on a platform, host software and hardware changes were often required. Implementing these changes was extremely costly due to the new testing cycle required – which led to slower rates of adoption for new NAND Flash components. ONFI aims to remedy that problem and speed time to market for NAND Flash based applications.

In-flight entertainment system

Windsor. The global aerospace industry was treated to a sneak peek into the future of in-flight entertainment as Toronto’s InteraXon demonstrated a prototype of their thought-controlled in-flight entertainment system to overwhelmingly positive responses. The system was shown at On the Wings of Innovation, a global aerospace symposium organized by the Ontario Aerospace Council andthe Ontario Government. Attendees including executives from Boeing, Bombardier and even Canadian Astronaut Bjarni Tryggvasonstayed long after the day’s programming ended to play one of four brainwave-controlled games specifically designed for use at 35,000 feet. The system measures the brain’s electrical output and sorts them into waves. The system reacts to alpha waves, associated with relaxation, and beta waves, associated with concentration. As the users relax or focus their thoughts, their brainwaves become the interface with which users control the game.
InteraXon ( is a Toronto-based company that serves clients with custom thought-controlled products and experiences. They were most recently featured in Ontario House during the Vancouver Olympics, where they allowed users to control the lights on the real CN Tower, Niagara Falls andthe Parliament Buildings using their thoughts alone from more than 3000km away. They were also featured at the Premier’s InnovationAwards in 2009 and 2010. Quickly becoming known for their impressive, innovative work, the company has rapidly established them-selves as a global leader in thought controlled computing.
