Layton Construction Successfully Implodes Vanderbilt University Residence Hall

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 29 luglio 2019

Construction demolished one of the tallest buildings on the campus of Vanderbilt University, Carmichael West Tower 3 residence hall, today. The removal of Carmichael Tower 3 makes way for the second of three new collegiate residences in the West End Neighborhood of Vanderbilt. The controlled implosion of the 14-story Tower was approximately an 11-second process overseen by Layton Construction, LLC, acting Construction Manager of Vanderbilt’s West End Neighborhood and Residential Colleges, and Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI), a national leader in large-structure controlled demolition. The implosion was triggered by a series of dynamite explosives placed into the structural elements of the building, creating the strategic “fall” of the tower.
Patterson says the key to success was teamwork in building preparation. “There was an immense amount of work and coordination performed by multiple parties to ensure that this critical implosion date was met on schedule.”Located on West End Avenue between 24th and 25th avenues, Carmichael Towers 3 and 4 have been home to tens of thousands of students since their opening in 1970. Named in memory of the university’s third Chancellor, Oliver Cromwell Carmichael, the residence halls served undergraduate students.Prior to the July 27 implosion, Carmichael Tower 4 served as the site for a unique training exercise for more than 800 Nashville firefighters. The Carmichael Towers 1&2 on West End Avenue will remain open to residents through the 2019-20 academic year.

Construction of 40 m fuoriserie yacht for an European owner

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 27 luglio 2019

Avenza. The construction of 40 m MY Panam, CCN’s fifth Fuoriserie motor yacht, ordered last September by a European owner, is continuing well on schedule. Early this month, the approx. 340 gross ton superyacht – designed by Francesco Paszkowski Design, who is in charge of both exteriors and interiors, the latter in cooperation with architect Margherita Casprini – was moved inside the shed where outfitting activities are to be carried out. Following completion of the hull and the superstructure, as well as of the decks interior layout, the installation of hydraulic and electrical systems, insulation, and activities on the guest areas and crew quarters on the lower deck have now started. This slender and aggressive yacht is going to stand out for her impressive performances, ensured by the light aluminium alloy hull and by the three MTU 16V200 M96L engines – installed last month – that will push her to a maximum speed of 31 knots Activities are also ongoing for the construction of the 4 hull doors – one of which for the semi-float-in garage that will host a 17’ tender – and on the beach area, open on 3 sides and fitted witha convenient automatic ladder allowing to easily step down into the water. Works have also already been completed on system and structural elements of the bow thruster and the stabilizing fins. The straight bow endows this yacht with a sinuous and yet modern, dynamic and powerful look, further enhanced by the large irregular-shape windows that let plenty of natural light into the interior salons. The layout features a large salon on the main deck, divided from the dining area by a “green” wall. Forward, the full-beam master suite is fitted with a walk-in wardrobe and a bathroom with Hammam. Two wide electrically-controlled windows open up on the sides offering a wonderful panoramic sea view. Four guest cabins are located on the lower deck, which also hosts the professional galley. On this same deck, forward, are the captain’s cabin, 2 double cabins, the laundry, and the crew mess. The 65 sq. m flybridge features a large aft custom-made pool with counter current swimmingsystem, while a sunbathing area can be found at the bow. Delivery is scheduled for summer 2020. Aptitude for careers in the construction industry

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 8 febbraio 2018

georgiaThe Associated General Contractors of Georgia (AGC Georgia) and the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia are partnering with YouScience to uncover high school students throughout the state with an aptitude for careers in the construction industry. More than 11,000 public high school students from Georgia have already participated in the YouScience Program, and the results clearly demonstrate that these students have the talent to fill the workforce needs for Georgia’s burgeoning construction industry.AGC Georgia has placed an emphasis on workforce development for several years to keep pace with the State’s growing needs for construction, and member firms are looking to hire high school students for work-based opportunities this summer. The organization and many of its construction firm members have committed to hire at least one high school student as identified by their YouScience Profile as a good fit, based on aptitudes and interests, for a 2018 summer internship.
Early qualifying students must have completed their YouScience Profile by March 5, 2018 and demonstrate a high aptitude or interest for construction to be eligible to interview at the Georgia Career Expo and Hiring Fair (March 22-24, 2018), AND can become part of the CEFGA workforce pipeline through their ongoing student hiring database. Students will also be interviewed by participating construction firms near the student’s high school. In addition to summer internships, CEFGA will be identifying work-based learning opportunities for the 2018-2019 school year. The Georgia Department of Education and the Technical College System of Georgia partnered together to make YouScience available at no cost to every student attending public high school in the state of Georgia. A representative from the school, or its superintendent’s office, simply needs to reach out to YouScience and request free access to the program. http://www.youscience.com/contact/“YouScience has shown that Georgia has more than enough students with the talent for careers in the construction industry,” said Mike Dunham, CEO of AGC Georgia. “AGC Georgia wants to encourage those students by offering construction summer internships with a local construction firm. By engaging these students at a younger age, we are able to nurture and groom them for a solid career in our industry.”Unlike traditional self-reported, interest-based career tools, YouScience is the only system that employs decades of rigorous scientific research to measure students’ aptitudes through a series of engaging “brain games.” The YouScience patent-pending technology combines cutting-edge matching algorithms with the most reliable and comprehensive career data, providing each student with a highly-personalized online profile that highlights the intersection of their unique talents, passions and opportunities.

Bouygues Construction Teams with Dassault Systèmes and Accenture to Accelerate the Digital Transformation of Its Construction Project Activities

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 12 dicembre 2017

platform_Construction_CourtesyBouygues Construction is accelerating the digital transformation of its project activities by collaborating with Accenture (NYSE: ACN) and Dassault Systèmes (Paris:DSY) (Euronext Paris: 13065, DSY.PA) to enable it to centrally manage construction projects from start to finish. The initiative is a logical extension of the company’s commitment to further industrialise its operations and enhance collaboration with its supply chain partners. It follows the company’s adoption several years ago of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology, a framework for integrating technologies and processes to drive end-to-end efficiency in construction operations. To support Bouygues Construction in this pioneering initiative for the construction industry, the three companies have signed an agreement to develop a digital environment for collaborative construction project management, based on Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform, already used in other industries including automotive and aerospace. The initiative is designed to help Bouygues Construction:centralise information throughout the project lifecycle, from design to operation, and share it with all internal and external stakeholders, better structure its operating methods through the use of more standardised processes.Philippe Bonnave, Chairman and Chief Executive of Bouygues Construction, said: “The transformation programme we are launching with Dassault Systèmes and Accenture marks a fundamental change for Bouygues Construction, signifying a modernisation of our businesses. By providing our employees and our supply chain with a digital work platform, employing all our project data across the board, this solution will guarantee greater efficiency to help us satisfy our customers’ expectations.”Bernard Charlès, Vice Chairman and CEO of Dassault Systèmes, said: “Smart and sustainable cities include complex networks of systems that require a new way of thinking in the construction industry. Natural resources must be used more efficiently, construction costs reduced, and designers, contractors and operators brought closer together. The 3DEXPERIENCE platform gives Bouygues Construction a unique opportunity to be the pioneer in the construction sector with business processes and a holistic approach integrating the company and its supply chain into a value creation chain. Thanks to the parallel exchange of data between the virtual world and the real world, Bouygues Construction will be able to set new standards of efficiency and capture all the business value expected from its digital transformation.” Christian Nibourel, Accenture’s Country Managing Director for France and Benelux, said: “This is one of the very first such initiatives in the construction sector. By using the latest digital technologies to enable the simultaneous collaboration of the whole ecosystem of a construction project, Bouygues Construction will have better control of costs and deadlines while minimising risks and adapting to subsequent changes in customers’ needs and in the standards in force, which can be very numerous during the construction process. Rome n’est plus dans Rome: 60 ans d’Europe, et après?

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 19 marzo 2017

paris

Activists are protesting around the world on President Trump’s inauguration day, holding banners that say “Build bridges, not walls”. Around the world, corporations and political elites are increasingly sowing division based on nationality, ethnicity, religion, class and gender. The election of Donald Trump to the Presidency of the United States makes this truth unavoidable. They do it because they can much more easily pursue profits and power in a context of fear and distrust.

Britain must recruit one worker every 77 seconds to meet construction needs, claims Arcadis

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 1 marzo 2017

britishBritish construction must recruit over 400,000 people each and every year between now and 2021 – equivalent to one worker every 77 seconds – if it is to create the homes and infrastructure the nation needs, according to the latest report from Arcadis. Failure to address the skills gulf could even see the earnings of some tradespeople sky-rocketing inside a generation, leading to the rise of the MINTED workforce – the Most in Need Trades Earning Double. The Arcadis Talent Scale has been developed to measure the true extent of the skills crisis across the infrastructure and house building workforce. In house building alone, the study shows that if the UK is to increase output to 270,000 new homes over the next five years, it will need to employ in excess of 370,000 new people. Meanwhile, when it comes to meeting forecast national infrastructure requirements, an additional 36,500 people will need to be employed every year. When it comes to individual skills, the greatest need is for carpenters and joiners, where demand accounts for nearly one sixth of all national resource requirements. Plumbers, Electricians, and Bricklayers are also in high demand, particularly in the labour-intensive housebuilding sector. Meanwhile, the report identifies a need for over 7,400 Civil Engineers and 7,300 Quantity Surveyors.London and the South East will need to employ more people than any other part of the UK, accounting for nearly 30 percent of total demand (110,000 people). With major national infrastructure programmes such as HS2 and Crossrail 2 already in the pipeline, it is expected that companies will need to draw heavily on the common talent pool of transferable skills if delivery targets are to be achieved. Outside of London and the South East, the highest skills requirement is in the East of England and the South West, where more than 43,000 and 41,000 additional workers respectively are needed to meet projected regional housing and infrastructure requirements. At the bottom of the table is Northern Ireland, where employment demand accounts for just 3 percent of the national total. These figures are independent of the impact of any eventual Brexit deal, which is likely to further increase the strain. In the event of a ‘hard’ Brexit scenario – for instance, extending the points-based system currently in place for non-EU migrants – the number of EU construction workers entering the UK could fall at the rate of attrition. If this were to play out, 215,000 fewer people from the EU would enter the infrastructure and house building sectors between now and 2020, further exacerbating the existing labour shortage.
James Bryce, Arcadis Director of Workforce Planning, explained: “What we have is not a skills gap; it is a skills gulf. Systemic underinvestment in the nation’s workforce has contributed to a reduction in UK productivity. Construction employment is already down 15 percent on 2008 and, quite simply, if we don’t have the right people to build the homes and infrastructure we need, the UK is going to struggle to maintain it’s competitive position in the global economy. “However, overcoming a skills shortfall as vast as the one we now face can’t be achieved through education and technology alone. Of course, we need to bring more new talent into the industry but, in the short term, construction will also need to look at those currently working in other industries and dramatically improve its efficiency.“On top of this, as part of any Brexit deal, the government can help by looking to secure the rights of EU workers currently operating in British construction, simplifying the visa system and minimising the tax burden on workers and business. If this fails to happen, many of the projects that the British government have earmarked for economic stimulus could prove more difficult and costly to resource. In the worst case scenario these projects could fail to be delivered at all, reducing our ability to grow the economy and limiting investment in the industry.”

“Shaping the Future of Construction”

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 11 Mag 2016

World Economic Forum,Tarkett, a global leader in innovative and sustainable solutions for flooring and sports surfaces, is one of the contributors to a new report published today by the World Economic Forum, exploring the future potential of the global engineering and construction industry, “Shaping the Future of Construction: A Breakthrough in Mindset and Technology”. The report was prepared in collaboration with The Boston Consulting Group. “Shaping the Future of Construction” is part of the Forum’s Industry Agenda project in which business leaders explore how the engineering and construction sector can drive sustainable business growth. The study has developed an ‘industry transformation framework’ to point to specific and practical developments and actions under several broad areas such as technology, materials and tools and cross-industry collaboration. The report notes the impact the industry already has on commerce, society and the environment. With an annual revenue of $10 trillion it represents 6% of global GDP, accounts for 25-40% of global carbon emissions and consumes vast quantities of natural resources such as 50% of world steel production every year. The new study explores ways in which digital technology, lean management, circular economics and cross-industry collaboration can unleash new revenue and societal and environmental benefits. The study also underlines that the materials that make up the built environment have a profound effect on the health and wellbeing of its occupants, citing the fact that in the US, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are two to five times higher indoors than outside. Linked to this, the report refers to various examples of Advanced Building Materials (ABMs) including Tarkett’s 100% recyclable vinyl flooring, iQ Natural, which uses bio-based plasticizers and has Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC) 100 times below the strictest standards. The report further refers to the challenges of urbanization and the growth of an ageing population and discusses the potential impact of the circular economy in this sector, where resources would be used more effectively and materials and product design would take fully into account the importance of health and wellbeing in the built environment, where people spend around 90% of their time. The case on Tarkett’s circular economy transition highlights the development of its closed-loop circular design system. It refers to Tarkett’s selection of ‘good’ materials, ensuring a positive impact on health and wellbeing and the environment as well as its efforts to improve energy and water efficiencies. The report also stresses the importance of collaboration, including the example of Desso – a Tarkett company – working closely with one of its yarns suppliers to turn post-consumer carpet fibers into new yarn.“The WEF project on the Future of Construction is showing how innovative thinking and practice can unlock great new potential to deliver powerful economic growth whilst paying attention to our shared responsibilities to society and the environment,” says Remco Teulings, President EMEA, Tarkett Group, and Steering Committee member of the Future of Construction. The World Economic Forum brings together the foremost political, business and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas at international summits. Tarkett joined WEF as a Partner Company in January 2016, contributing to the forum’s discussions through a dual membership, engaging in both the Global Challenge initiative on the ‘Environment and Natural Resource Security’ and as an Industry Partner for ‘Infrastructure and Urban Development’.
With net sales of 2.7 billion euros in 2015, Tarkett is a global leader in innovative and sustainable solutions for flooring and sports surfaces. Offering a wide range of products including vinyl, linoleum, carpet, rubber, wood & laminate, synthetic turf and athletic tracks, the Group serves customers in more than 100 countries worldwide. With 12,000 employees and 34 industrial sites, Tarkett sells 1.3 million square meters of flooring every day, for hospitals, schools, housing, hotels, offices, stores and sports fields. Committed to sustainable development, the Group has implemented an eco‐innovation strategy and promotes circular economy. World Bank to Help Bosnia and Herzegovina with Energy Savings

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 15 marzo 2014

World_BankWASHINGTON. The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors today approved a credit in the amount of US$32 million for the Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH) Energy Efficiency Project. The project aims to demonstrate the benefits of energy efficiency improvements in public buildings throughout the country and support the development of scalable energy efficiency financing models.BH has recognized the importance of energy efficiency in supporting sustainable economic growth and moving towards EU accession. As a member of the Energy Community Treaty, BH has developed a draft National Energy Efficiency Action Plan that includes an indicative energy savings target of nine percent by 2018. Efficiency improvements in buildings are expected to make a significant contribution to achieving this target.
It is expected that a total of approximately 85 public buildings – mainly schools and hospitals – will be retrofitted under the project, making them more energy efficient. Due to its focus on public education and healthcare facilities, the project will directly benefit some of the often most vulnerable sections of society, particularly, children and hospital patients.“This project will support the country’s national development strategy by promoting economic growth, development, and employment in the construction sector,” said Anabela Abreu, World Bank Country Manager for Bosnia and Herzegovina. “In addition, improved energy efficiency will lead to a decrease in fuel consumption for heating as well as reduced carbon emissions into the air, which will have a particularly positive impact in larger urban areas during winter periods.”Overall, energy efficiency improvements in the public sector reduce energy expenditures and can create fiscal space for other development priorities. In BH, implementation of cost-effective energy efficiency measures in healthcare and educational facilities throughout the country could reduce public expenditures by about US$25 million per year. The World Bank portfolio of active projects in BH now includes 12 operations totaling approximately US$454.6 million. Areas of support include agriculture, environment, forestry, health, social safety and employment, local infrastructure, and private sector development.

Drives for NandFlash-Based Notebooks

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 5 gennaio 2011

Boise, Idaho. Micron Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:MU) today unveiled a new portfolio of the industry’s most advanced RealSSDTM solid-state drives (SSDs) for the fast growing flash-based notebook market. A new breed of notebooks are entering the market that have lightweight construction, snappier system responsiveness and a longer lasting battery—all made possible because of the innovations in flash-based storage products. The new portfoliois the first SSD product line to incorporate Micron’s 25-nanometer (nm) NAND flash technology, creating a broad portfolio of capacities ranging from 64-gigabyte (GB) to 512GB. The drives will be available in 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch form factors. As with its predecessor, the product line also supports the SATA 6Gb/s interface, which opens up the data path between the host processor and the SSD delivering improved overall system responsiveness including faster boot times and speedier application loads. The new drives reach read speeds up to 415 megabytes (MB)/second, which is 17 percent faster than Micron’s previous generation drives. With write performance varying by capacity, the new 512GB drive achieves up to 260 MB/second write speeds, which is more than 20 percent faster than the fastest C300 drive. The new SSDs also provide benefits that desktops, workstations and industrial applications can take advantage of including low power consumption, lightweight construction and resistance to shock and vibration. Micron is currently working with notebook manufacturers to qualify its new RealSSD drivesunder the C400 product name. With samples of the RealSSD C400 drives available now, Micron expects mass production to begin in February.
Bringing the drives to business customers and consumers, Crucial, a division of Micron, will begin selling the portfolio under the name, Crucial® m4 SSD. The Crucial m4 SSD product line is expected to be available online at crucial.com and through select global channel partners in the first quarter of 2011.
As a NAND developer and manufacturer, Micron is in a unique position to apply proprietary management algorithms to its RealSSD portfolio that yield tremendous performance gains and maintain quality control. Micron continues to push NAND process geometries—the company is currently at 25nm with visibility into several more generations—which brings great benefits to solid-state storage applications including greater capacity and more cost-effective designs.

Air quality guidelines

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 16 dicembre 2010

A new volume of the global guidelines for indoor air quality is released today. WHO guidelines for indoor air quality: selected pollutants results from the contribution of over 60 international scientists to a project coordinated by WHO Regional Office for Europe and presents for the first time evidence and guidance to protect health globally from the impact of indoor chemicals. The guidelines recommend targets for indoor air quality at which the health risks are significantly reduced and provide a scientific basis for legally enforceable standards in all regions of the world. Hazardous substances emitted from buildings, construction materials and indoor equipment or due to human activities such as fuel combustion for cooking or heating, lead to a broad range of health problems and may even be fatal. At least 400 deaths are caused annually by indoor carbon monoxide poisoning in the WHO European Region, and up to 14% of lung cancers are attributable to residential radon exposure. Life-long exposure to benzene concentrations as observed in European houses is associated with up to 10 cases of leukaemia per 100 000 people. The guidelines are targeted at public health professionals involved in preventing the health risks of environmental exposures, as well as at specialists and authorities involved in the design and use of buildings, indoor materials and products. This volume is the second in a series, following the 2009 book on dampness and mould, and anticipates further work to address household fuel combustion.
The nine substances considered in this review are common indoor air pollutants globally and are just a few of the many chemicals encountered in indoor spaces. They were selected for this review based on the existence of their indoor sources, the availability of evidence on their health effects, and their common presence in concentrations of health concern. Based on the accumulated science, experts formulated health risk evaluations and agreed on the guidelines for each of the pollutants (see fact sheet).  Problems of indoor air quality are important health risk factors in low-, middle- and high-income countries. Population groups in residences, day-care centres and retirement homes are particularly vulnerable to indoor air pollution due to their health status or age. The guidelines are intended to address various levels of economic development, cover all relevant population groups, and allow feasible approaches to reducing health risks from exposure to the selected pollutants in various regions of the world.

L’exclusion sociale

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 22 luglio 2010

Massimo Listri: Under Construction

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 10 Mag 2010
