Message from the conference on “Churches contribution to a sustainable society”

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 3 giugno 2019

Brussels. The conference, organised jointly by the Church of Norway and European Christian Environmental Network (ECEN), gathered representatives from churches and ecumenical organisations from eleven countries across Europe. The challenges we face are overwhelming. Climate change, accelerating decline of biodiversity, pollution of water sources and overconsumption of the resources on earth are destructive to life itself. Our present lifestyle is a threat to millions of people today and for generations to come. There is an urgent need to turn away from our current path and seek to follow a new one together.
As the Green Capital of Europe 2019, Oslo is providing a good example of how to create a sustainable lifestyle in a healthy environment. But this is not enough. Other cities should follow, and governments and countries alike. We hear the call from those who suffers from environmental destruction and climate change. We hear the call from children and youth for urgent action. God, the creator calls us to take responsibility, and care for creation and our neighbours. We have benefitted during the conference from sharing experience of a number of activities that churches all over Europe involved to take care of creation, advocating for climate justice, and demonstrating their need and aspiration for a sustainable lifestyle. In order to be relevant to the challenges of this world, we must do more. We must repent our inaction in the past and react to the current state of emergency. The responsibility is greater for those who are able to do more.
We encourage the Church of Norway to step up its efforts to call the Norwegian government and oil-extracting industry to take appropriate action as advocated in the report Norway’s fair share. This report also aligns with the demands of the children and young people, who demonstrated worldwide in March and May.We call upon the churches in Europe for further urgent action, speaking out against injustice, choosing the side of the poor, oppressed and the young generation calling for a sustainable future. This action may include:
Participating actively in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.
Questioning the ideology of unlimited economic growth.Providing leadership in transforming our lifestyles to sustainable ones.Actively contributing to the discussion in the public demanding urgent and concrete action to combat climate change and ecological destruction.
Cooperating in these efforts with other churches and other faith communities.
Reducing the ecological footprints of churches.Divesting from fossil fuels and reinvesting in sustainable alternative solutions. We call upon churches in particular this time of climate emergency to work prayerfully towards these goals.

Exploring religion’s contribution to peace in Southeast Asia

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 20 novembre 2016

conference-bahaiJAKARTA — Religion has a unique contribution to make to social progress and the realization of peace. This is one of the ideas that the Baha’i International Community (BIC) Regional Office in Jakarta has been exploring since its establishment two years ago.“Religion and spirituality are deeply rooted in the hearts of Southeast Asian people,” explains Mr. Chong Ming Hwee, representative of the BIC Regional Office in Jakarta. “Featuring prominently in our daily lives, religious principles and values permeate our consciousness, thoughts, decisions, and actions.“There is a need for us to re-examine religion’s place in the modern world and to arrive collectively at new insights about the contributions it can make to the advancement of the whole of society,” Mr. Chong continues. In this connection, the BIC Jakarta Office has been contributing to a dialogue about how spiritual teachings can foster consciousness of the oneness of humankind by building a sense of human identity that transcends religious, ethnic, and national divides. At the heart of this endeavor is a belief that religion—as a system of knowledge that provides unique insight into human nature and society—has a power to tap human agency and inspire commitment to action in individuals and whole populations.
The creation of the BIC Jakarta Office in 2014, based in Indonesia, marked a milestone in the Baha’i community’s efforts to contribute to thought about social… »Enlarge (3 images)“Perhaps more than ever, we need to understand religion’s constructive power which, despite its abuse over the centuries and today, we believe can enable people to overcome age old prejudices and work together for a harmonious and just society,” explains Mr. Chong. The history of the Baha’i Faith in Southeast Asia stretches back to the time of Baha’u’llah. In the late 1800s, two Baha’is traveled extensively throughout the region, visiting towns and villages that are located in present-day Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. As a result of their efforts to share the Baha’i teachings with others, several early Baha’i communities were formed.Over the many decades that have followed, Baha’i communities have become established in every country of the region, working to promote unity and build communities in which the central principles of the Baha’i Faith—such as the oneness of humankind and the equality of women and men—would progressively find expression in new patterns of interactions and relationships.
The creation of the BIC Jakarta Office in 2014 marked a milestone in the Baha’i community’s efforts to contribute to thought about social and spiritual advancement in Southeast Asia. Here, all of the major world religions are present, and the question of religion’s role in promoting peace and unity is highly relevant. The BIC’s efforts are carried out in collaboration with others, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Southeast Asia’s major regional organization. These efforts have included participation in various conferences and forums, the organization of spaces for dialogue among diverse actors, and the publication of articles. In the last year, for example, the BIC assisted with an ASEAN Foundation project exploring the role of faith-based organizations in contributing to the betterment of the region. A BIC representative was also invited to give a keynote address at the 2nd Annual Malang International Peace Conference in August.Reflecting on the dynamism of the people of Southeast Asia, Mr. Chong states that the progress being made in the dialogue on peace “reflects their desires and aspirations for a better region.””We hope that growing circles of individuals and groups will work shoulder-to-shoulder for the betterment of our societies.” (photo: conference)

Single private contribution

Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller at the ...

Image via Wikipedia

The Diller – von Furstenberg Family Foundation has made a $20 million commitment to the High Line, which is the largest single private contribution to a public park in New York City’s history. This unprecedented pledge, made by Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg, will support our fundraising efforts to transform the final, undeveloped section of the High Line at the West Side Rail Yards and help build an endowment for the park’s long-term maintenance and operations.
In 2005, when the High Line was a beautiful design on paper, many people said it was an impossible dream. Barry, Diane, and their family stepped forward at that crucial moment with visionary support that helped catalyze the construction of the first section of the High Line. Later, during the turmoil of the financial crisis in 2008 and 2009, they stepped forward again to make sure that the second section of the High Line could be built to the same standards of design and to begin an endowment for the park’s long-term operations. Now, understanding the importance of our mission to secure the entire historic High Line at the West Side Rail Yards, and to build our endowment, they have come forward once again to meet the High Line’s most pressing needs. With this pledge, the Diller – von Furstenberg family has donated a total of $35 million to the High Line, demonstrating their leadership in preserving and transforming the High Line into a public park to be enjoyed by New Yorkers for generations to come.
The Diller – von Furstenberg Family Foundation is a private family foundation which provides philanthropic support to various 501(c)3 non-profit organizations. Founded in 1999, the Foundation is guided by the shared values, concerns and passions of the Diller – von Furstenberg family. As its central goal, the Foundation aims to positively impact the world by improving people’s lives and strengthening communities. To achieve this objective, the Foundation supports organizations which either provide people opportunities for which they would not otherwise have access, or which sustainably improve a community as a whole. The primary recipients of the Foundation’s support are organizations within the following sectors: Community Building, Education, Human Rights, Arts, Health and the Environment.

Promote Successful Integration of Migrants

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 14 aprile 2011

New York, Washington, D.C. The National League of Cities (NLC), the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), are partnering to promote the cohesive integration and successful civic engagement of migrants. The successful integration of migrants ensures a more stable community and reduces crime and poverty, while maximizing the social and economic contribution migrant communities make to the life of the city. Through NLC’s Municipal Action for Immigrant Integration (MAII) program and the UNAOC and the IOM’s Community on Migration and Integration: Building Inclusive Societies program (IBIS), the organizations will promote the exchange of ideas and best practices and combine outreach efforts to local elected officials and other city staff about the benefits of migrant integration.  Additionally, the partnership will identify and promote good practices of migrant integration within local governments and disseminate international case studies and promote international and inter-city exchanges. “The integration of immigrants in US cities is an example of how urban spaces enable people of different cultures to interact and learn to live together. At the UNAOC, we encourage local governments to be more active on integration issues, and advocate that local know-how feeds into effective policy making at a national level. In this field, NLC has many great examples to bring to the rest of our IBIS community,” said UNAOC Director Marc Scheuer. The National League of Cities is the nation’s oldest and largest organization devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans. The UN Alliance of Civilization (UNAOC) was established in 2005, at the initiative of the Governments of Spain and Turkey, under the auspices of the United Nations. UNAOC is an initiative of the UN Secretary-General which aims to improve understanding and cooperative relations among nations and peoples across cultures and religions, and to help counter the forces that fuel polarization and extremism. The UNAOC works in partnership with States, international and regional organizations, civil society groups, foundations, and the private sector to mobilize concerted efforts to promote cross-cultural relations among diverse nations and communities.About the International Organization on Migration  As the leading international organization in the field of migration, IOM works with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. To promote humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all.  Established in 1951, with 127 member states, a further 17 states holding observer status, and offices in more than 100 countries, IOM works to help ensure the orderly and humane management of migration, to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, including refugees and internally displaced people.  IOM works in the four broad areas of migration management: Migration and development; Facilitating migration; Regulating migration; and Forced migration.

Un world tourism organization

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 3 novembre 2010

A UNWTO side-event, ‘Tourism and Biodiversity: how to achieve common goals towards sustainability’, held during the meeting, advocated for the inclusion of tourism in the COP agenda and national policies as a driver of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development (27 October 2010). In particular, the event officially presented the UNWTO Recommendations to COP10 calling on the Parties to take note of the opportunities inherent in sustainable tourism for implementing the objectives of the CBD.  As a key source of income and employment, tourism makes a valuable contribution to socio-economic growth, particularly in developing countries where the largest proportion of global biodiversity is concentrated. As a result, the sector provides strong incentives for the protection of biodiversity, generates significant revenues for conservation and community development and helps raise awareness of biodiversity issues. According to the UNWTO Recommendations, a better understanding of the link between tourism, biodiversity and poverty alleviation will maximize benefits for all three areas.  The UNWTO Recommendations further outline the main conclusions emerging from the 2010 World Tourism Day celebrations, held under the theme ‘Tourism and Biodiversity’, to coincide with the UN International Year of Biodiversity. The conclusions underscore the need for the global tourism sector – as one of the world’s leading economic activities – to assume a collective responsibility for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. In particular, public and private tourism stakeholders must work within their respective ambits to implement global biodiversity targets and the involvement of local communities must be maximized to develop tourism in a sustainable manner.

The economic and financial crisis

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 5 giugno 2009

The collapse of the international financial system and the contribution of the Church will be the focus of a one-day meeting of the Bishops and experts of the Episcopal Conferences aimed at assessing the current status of the situation in Europe. Following the meetings of Frascati (1998) and Warsaw (2000), a new meeting promoted by CCEE on social issues is to take place. Thirty-four delegates representing twenty-one Bishops’ Conferences will discuss issues relating to the current social and economic crisis and the contribution of the Catholic Church in Europe. ‘The Catholic Church has frequently reiterated that the current crisis is not only economic and financial in nature, but it is first and foremost a moral one and one of trust and. In Zagreb we shall assess the many actions undertaken by the Bishops’ Conferences to counteract this situation’, states the General Secretary of CCEE, Fr Duarte da Cunha. ‘We believe in fact that this crisis may also represent a concrete opportunity not only for those entrusted with reforming the economic and financial systems, but for all citizens, so they may look to the future with trust in the attempt to re-think the balances of life together as well as the lifestyle of each individual. The Church is in a position to offer those open to Her message a framework of reference pertaining to morals and values which is able to place men and women and the good of humanity as a whole at its very centre. The first result of the Zagreb meeting will certainly be that of networking not only vis-à-vis concerns, but also experiences, answers and good practices implemented by the Bishops’ Conferences, as well as identifying possible paths for future collaboration. The initial lesson this crisis has taught us is that we cannot emerge from it on our own and we can only overcome it with everyone’s engagement’.
