Sensors and metrology as the driving force for digitalization

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 21 giugno 2019

Nürnberg from June 25 to 27, the world’s leading forum for sensor and measurement technology, will be able to see these and many other pioneering technologies at the joint Fraunhofer exhibit.
Many digitalized processes depend on data collected by increasingly powerful sensors and other test and measurement technology. When this data is processed, it provides precise and reliable information about the operating environment. Nine Fraunhofer Institutes will be presenting the results of their research into sensor technology and its applications in the field of testing and measurement at Sensor+Test 2019.

GEICO Says Celebrate Fourth of July Safely; Declare Freedom from Risky Driving

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 2 luglio 2018

Vehicle crashes jump on the Fourth of July every year, making it the deadliest driving day of the year, says the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Whether you’re on your way to see local fireworks or taking a longer road trip, GEICO encourages drivers to remember the following tips to help stay safe during the holiday. The speed limit is your friend: While you might be in a hurry to beat holiday traffic, remember that driving over the speed limit puts you, your passengers and other vehicles on the road in danger. Leave early to give yourself more time. Drive at a safe speed throughout your trip to help avoid an accident or speeding ticket.
Explore your options: Drunk-driving crashes account for more than 50 percent of the accidents on Independence Day, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). If you plan on having a drink, designate a sober friend to drive or use a ridesharing app.
Declare freedom from distractions: That red, white and blue themed Snap or text message can wait until you park. Put your phone away or switch it to Do Not Disturb. Download directions and music playlists beforehand. Plan where you will stop to eat or get gas.
Make sure your ride is road trip ready: Before any road trip, check for repairs to ensure your vehicle makes it safely to your destination. If you go to the NHTSA Safety Issues and recalls site you can type in your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to find current recalls.

New study highlights how perfectionist drive is leading to burnout

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 1 agosto 2015

University of Bath2University of Bath1A new study from York St John University and the University of Bath has revealed the extent to which perfectionist tendencies in employees are driving many to burnout and points to ways in which habits might be changed. In the report, published in the journal Personality & Social Psychology Review, researchers looked at the impact perfectionism is having on extreme stress and burnout. Psychologists have long been fascinated by the effects of perfectionism – a personality trait encompassing excessively high personal standards coupled with harsh self-criticism – however this is the first study to aggregate its full effects. Through a detailed review of research, the researchers found that perfectionism is closely associated with burnout – a syndrome associated with chronic stress that manifests as extreme fatigue, perceived reduced accomplishment and eventual detachment. And whilst their findings are relevant across education and in sports, the researchers found this relationship is particularly strong in employment settings – something they suggest is increasingly driven by a prevailing performance-outcomes focus in the modern workplace. In such an environment, where poor performance carries significant costs, perfectionist tendencies are often exacerbated, which not only leads to increased stress for individuals but in fact poorer performance and a lack of innovation for organisations.Dr Andrew Hill, Associate Professor and Head of Taught Postgraduate Programmes at York St John University, who was lead-author of the review and whose work focusses university of bathon the effects of perfectionism in achievement contexts said: “Too often people confuse perfectionism with more desirable features such as being conscientious. Rather than being more productive, perfectionists are likely to find the workplace quite difficult and stressful. “Our research suggests that if perfectionists are unable to cope with demands and uncertainty in the workplace, they will experience a range of emotional difficulties.” Dr Thomas Curran, Lecturer in Sport Psychology at the University of Bath, who co-authored the research, and whose work focuses on motivation and emotion added: “As a society we tend to hold perfectionism as a sign of virtue or high-achievement. Yet our findings show that perfectionism is a largely destructive trait. We suggest its effects can be managed and organisations must be clear that perfection is not a criteria of success. Instead, diligence, flexibility and perseverance are far better qualities.”
Certain companies, including Google, have in recent years established bold initiatives to counter perfectionism and drive up quality by rewarding staff for failure. Such methods, as well as a greater focus on balanced working lives, depressurised working environments and a greater acceptance of failure could all go a long way to mitigating the negative effects associated with perfectionism, the authors suggest.
The University of Bath one of the UK’s leading universities both in terms of research and our reputation for excellence in teaching, learning and graduate prospects.
In the REF 2014 research assessment 87 per cent of our research was defined as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. From making aircraft more fuel efficient, to identifying infectious diseases more quickly, or cutting carbon emissions through innovative building solutions, research from Bath is making a difference around the world.Well established as a nurturing environment for enterprising minds, Bath is ranked highly in all national league tables. It was voted number one in the UK for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey (NSS) for two years running, and is the UK’s top university in the Times Higher Education (THE) Student Experience Survey 2015.
