MEPs want new cars to respect emission limits under real driving conditions

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 23 settembre 2020

As of September 2022, cars must meet EU limits on NOx emissions under real driving conditions to comply with air pollution limits, says the European Parliament.
On Thursday, Parliament adopted its position with 485 votes to 169 and 42 abstentions on the Commission proposal to re-introduce legal exemptions (through a so-called conformity factor) on nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from light passenger and commercial cars (Euro 5 and Euro 6) for type approval of vehicles tested under real driving conditions in order to comply with the EU General Court ruling of 13 December 2018.Previously, data on car emissions such as NOx were obtained through laboratory tests. The EU is the first region in the world to use real driving emissions (RDE) tests to measure such pollutants emitted by vehicles while driven on the road. However, emissions from these vehicles in real-world driving conditions tend to be significantly higher. To address technical uncertainties regarding measurements obtained through Portable Emission Measurement Systems (PEMS), which measure emissions from engines while they are being used, the Commission introduced the so-called ‘conformity factor’, which allows for higher emissions under real driving conditions to take into account a margin of error. To reduce NOx emissions, Parliament wants the conformity factor currently in place to be annually lowered, based on assessments by the Joint Research Centre. After being immediately lowered from 1.43 to 1.32, it should be gradually reduced and cease to apply by 30 September 2022, after which only the raw data from tests carried out under real driving conditions would be used to determine compliance with EU emission limits. The report also asks that the Commission establish by June 2021 more stringent requirements for the portable measuring equipment to be used for RDE tests.

Car emissions: MEPs set end on gap between lab and real driving emission test

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 18 luglio 2020

To ensure that cars meet EU limits on NOx emissions, tests under real driving conditions must be more stringent, said the Environment Committee on Tuesday. The Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee adopted on Tuesday an amendment to EU rules on measuring emissions from light passenger and commercial cars (Euro 5 and Euro 6) with 55 votes to 14 and 11 abstentions. MEPs want to substantially reduce NOx emissions to address the serious problems caused by air pollution.According to the 2019 Air Quality Report by the European Environment Agency, air pollution led to more than half a million premature deaths in 2016 and is the number one environmental cause of premature death in the EU. As passenger cars produce 40% of total EU NOx emissions, they are a significant source of air pollution, especially in urban areas.
Previously, pollutants such as NOx emissions from cars and other vehicles were measured in a laboratory. The EU is the first region in the world to introduce real driving emissions (RDE) tests to measure such pollutants emitted by vehicles while driven on the road.To address any uncertainties regarding technical measurement linked with the introduction of these Portable Emission Measurement Systems (PEMS), which measure emissions from engines while they are being used, the Commission introduced a so-called ‘conformity factor’.The Environment Committee wants the conformity factor currently in place to be annually lowered, based on assessments by the Joint Research Centre. This downward revision starts already with lowering the conformity factor from 1.43 to 1.32. It will cease to apply by 30 September 2022, after which only the raw data from RDE tests will be used to determine compliance with EU emission limits, MEPs agreed. The report also asks that the Commission establish by June 2021 more stringent requirements for the portable measuring equipment to be used for RDE tests.

GEICO Says Keep the Holiday Rush out of Your Driving

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 18 dicembre 2019

Whether it’s a shopping excursion, a journey to locate the perfect tree, or a trip to an annual holiday party, GEICO urges drivers to approach their holiday errands with patience and consideration for other drivers to help everyone have a safe holiday season.
A little courtesy goes a long way: Remember that you’re not the only car on the road, and many others are also trying to get to the same places. Considerate gestures, like leaving space for a car to pull out into traffic or change lanes help everyone’s trips go more smoothly. It’s best not to be in a rush: Dashing through the snow may sound exhilarating; however, that – not to mention zipping across normal, dry pavement – can lead to dangerous consequences. As traffic builds throughout the holiday season, take it easy and leave extra time to get to your destination.Aggressive driving puts you on the naughty list: Tailgating, weaving through traffic and failing to yield the right of way can cause anything from moderate frustration to a devastating crash. There’s no room for this type of behavior on any roadway, as it severely jeopardizes the safety of many vehicles around the offending car.Have a plan in place if you consume alcoholic beverages: The holiday season is a time for merriment, which may include consuming alcoholic beverages at a gathering. If you plan to have drinks, make sure getting behind the wheel does not become part of your plan later. Many jurisdictions across the country step up DUI patrols this time of year. Plan to order a rideshare, take public transportation or assign a sober designated driver to get you home.

GEICO Says Celebrate Fourth of July Safely; Declare Freedom from Risky Driving

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 2 luglio 2018

Vehicle crashes jump on the Fourth of July every year, making it the deadliest driving day of the year, says the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Whether you’re on your way to see local fireworks or taking a longer road trip, GEICO encourages drivers to remember the following tips to help stay safe during the holiday. The speed limit is your friend: While you might be in a hurry to beat holiday traffic, remember that driving over the speed limit puts you, your passengers and other vehicles on the road in danger. Leave early to give yourself more time. Drive at a safe speed throughout your trip to help avoid an accident or speeding ticket.
Explore your options: Drunk-driving crashes account for more than 50 percent of the accidents on Independence Day, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). If you plan on having a drink, designate a sober friend to drive or use a ridesharing app.
Declare freedom from distractions: That red, white and blue themed Snap or text message can wait until you park. Put your phone away or switch it to Do Not Disturb. Download directions and music playlists beforehand. Plan where you will stop to eat or get gas.
Make sure your ride is road trip ready: Before any road trip, check for repairs to ensure your vehicle makes it safely to your destination. If you go to the NHTSA Safety Issues and recalls site you can type in your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to find current recalls.

New study highlights how perfectionist drive is leading to burnout

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 1 agosto 2015

University of Bath2University of Bath1A new study from York St John University and the University of Bath has revealed the extent to which perfectionist tendencies in employees are driving many to burnout and points to ways in which habits might be changed. In the report, published in the journal Personality & Social Psychology Review, researchers looked at the impact perfectionism is having on extreme stress and burnout. Psychologists have long been fascinated by the effects of perfectionism – a personality trait encompassing excessively high personal standards coupled with harsh self-criticism – however this is the first study to aggregate its full effects. Through a detailed review of research, the researchers found that perfectionism is closely associated with burnout – a syndrome associated with chronic stress that manifests as extreme fatigue, perceived reduced accomplishment and eventual detachment. And whilst their findings are relevant across education and in sports, the researchers found this relationship is particularly strong in employment settings – something they suggest is increasingly driven by a prevailing performance-outcomes focus in the modern workplace. In such an environment, where poor performance carries significant costs, perfectionist tendencies are often exacerbated, which not only leads to increased stress for individuals but in fact poorer performance and a lack of innovation for organisations.Dr Andrew Hill, Associate Professor and Head of Taught Postgraduate Programmes at York St John University, who was lead-author of the review and whose work focusses university of bathon the effects of perfectionism in achievement contexts said: “Too often people confuse perfectionism with more desirable features such as being conscientious. Rather than being more productive, perfectionists are likely to find the workplace quite difficult and stressful. “Our research suggests that if perfectionists are unable to cope with demands and uncertainty in the workplace, they will experience a range of emotional difficulties.” Dr Thomas Curran, Lecturer in Sport Psychology at the University of Bath, who co-authored the research, and whose work focuses on motivation and emotion added: “As a society we tend to hold perfectionism as a sign of virtue or high-achievement. Yet our findings show that perfectionism is a largely destructive trait. We suggest its effects can be managed and organisations must be clear that perfection is not a criteria of success. Instead, diligence, flexibility and perseverance are far better qualities.”
Certain companies, including Google, have in recent years established bold initiatives to counter perfectionism and drive up quality by rewarding staff for failure. Such methods, as well as a greater focus on balanced working lives, depressurised working environments and a greater acceptance of failure could all go a long way to mitigating the negative effects associated with perfectionism, the authors suggest.
The University of Bath one of the UK’s leading universities both in terms of research and our reputation for excellence in teaching, learning and graduate prospects.
In the REF 2014 research assessment 87 per cent of our research was defined as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. From making aircraft more fuel efficient, to identifying infectious diseases more quickly, or cutting carbon emissions through innovative building solutions, research from Bath is making a difference around the world.Well established as a nurturing environment for enterprising minds, Bath is ranked highly in all national league tables. It was voted number one in the UK for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey (NSS) for two years running, and is the UK’s top university in the Times Higher Education (THE) Student Experience Survey 2015.
