Stroke prevention drugs may help reduce dementia risk for atrial fibrillation patients

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 18 marzo 2018

Barcelona, Spain – Patients with atrial fibrillation could reduce the risk of dementia by taking stroke prevention medications, according to recommendations published online today in EP Europace1, a European Society of Cardiology journal, and presented at EHRA 2018.2 The international consensus document was also published in HeartRhythm, the official journal of the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), and Journal of Arrhythmia, the official journal of the Japanese Heart Rhythm Society (JHRS) and the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS).The expert consensus statement on arrhythmias and cognitive function was developed by the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA), a branch of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC); the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS); the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS); and the Latin American Heart Rhythm Society (LAHRS).Heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias), as well as some procedures undertaken to treat them, can increase the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. The international consensus document was written for doctors specialising in arrhythmias and aims to raise awareness of the risks of cognitive impairment and dementia and how to reduce them. The document states that atrial fibrillation is associated with a higher risk for cognitive impairment and dementia, even in the absence of apparent stroke. This may be because atrial fibrillation is linked with a more than two-fold risk of silent strokes. The accumulation of silent strokes and the associated brain injuries over time may contribute to cognitive impairment.Stroke prevention with oral anticoagulant drugs is the main priority in the management of patients with atrial fibrillation. The consensus document says that oral anticoagulation may reduce the risk of dementia.Adopting a healthy lifestyle may also reduce the risk of cognitive decline in patients with atrial fibrillation. This includes not smoking and preventing or controlling hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and sleep apnoea.“Patients with atrial fibrillation may be able to reduce their risk of cognitive impairment and dementia by taking their oral anticoagulation medication and having a healthy lifestyle,” said Dr Nikolaos Dagres, lead author and consultant, Department of Electrophysiology, Heart Centre Leipzig, Germany. The document also reviews the association between other arrhythmias and cognitive dysfunction, including post-cardiac arrest, in patients with cardiac implantable devices such as implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) and pacemakers, and ablation procedures.Treatment of atrial fibrillation with catheter ablation can itself lead to silent strokes and cognitive impairment. To reduce the risk, physicians should follow recommendations for performing ablation and for the management of patients before and after the procedure.3,4
The consensus document notes that physicians may suspect cognitive impairment if a patient’s appearance or behaviour changes — for example, if appointments are missed. Family members should be asked for collateral information. If suspicions are confirmed, the consensus document recommends tools to conduct an objective assessment of cognitive function. The paper highlights gaps in knowledge and areas for further research. These include, for instance, how to identify atrial fibrillation patients at increased risk of cognitive impairment and dementia, the effect of rhythm control on cognitive function, and the impact of cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) on cognitive function.

New psychoactive substances will be banned from the EU faster

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 25 ottobre 2017

lotta alla drogaProducing and selling them will be punished with similar penalties to other illicit drugs.Under updated legislation passed by Parliament on Tuesday, the procedure to determine the potential effects of new psychoactive substances (NPS), and to adopt control measures in the EU if needed, will be significantly shorter, in order to keep up with the fast-paced developments on the market.National authorities will have 6 months – instead of 12 – to apply an EU decision. Information exchange, via the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), will be improved.NPS are chemical substances which are traded freely and have similar effects to some other illegal drugs, such as cocaine, heroin, cannabis and ecstasy. Once banned from the market, the production, distribution and sale of the most dangerous new substances could be punishable with maximum penalties of between five and ten years imprisonment, as is the case for other illicit drugs. Europol will have a more significant role in the early-warning system and risk assessment procedure, to help determine cross-border involvement of criminal organisations. Parliament passed changes to the EMCDDA founding Regulation with 609 votes to 19 and 29 abstentions, while the modified Directive, already in second reading, was approved without a vote.

Global Dermatology Drugs Market to 2023

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 22 agosto 2017

psoriasiThe report Global Dermatology Drugs Market to 2023 – Growth Driven by Increased Uptake of Interleukin Receptor Inhibitors for Psoriasis and Atopic Dermatitis provides an introduction to dermatology, including disease epidemiology, symptoms, etiology, pathophysiology, co-morbidities and complications. Disease classification and methods of diagnosis are also provided. There are 850 products in the dermatology pipeline with a disclosed stage of development, but the majority of these drugs are at an early stage of development. Some 42% of the pipeline is in the Preclinical stage, while 14% is in the discovery stage. However, 32% of the pipeline is in clinical development, but only 3% are in the Pre-registration stage and less than half are novel.Four drugs that were approved for psoriasis are Cosentyx, Otezla, Eucrisa and Taltz. The most notable of the four are Cosentyx and Otezla, which were approved in 2015 and 2014, respectively, and are forecast to generate $3.8 billion and $2.7 billion from the therapy area in 2023, respectively. The two most recently approved psoriasis treatments, Taltz and Eucrisa, are not expected to achieve the same level of commercial success as Cosentyx or Otezla because they are entering a market that is already saturated with entrenched competitors that have reduced the level of unmet need.Dermatology therapy area is dominated by top 20 pharma companies. In 2016 the most commercially successful companies in the therapy area were Johnson & Johnson, AbbVie, Amgen, Novartis and Pfizer. Across the forecast period these companies will continue to generate high revenue, but the companies will all see their market shares change.

Drugs: quicker reaction against new substances

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 10 giugno 2017

droghe“Legal highs”, new substances which can have a similar effect to heroin, cocaine and other illicit drugs, will be declared illegal and removed from the market more quickly.Under new rules backed by the Civil Liberties Committee on Thursday and already agreed with the Council, the deadlines for determining the risks posed by new psychoactive substances (NPS) will be substantially reduced, shortening the whole procedure almost by half. The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA, the EU drugs agency), already in charge of monitoring all new substances reported by member states, will also have to lead the exchange of information, draw a first report on any suspicious substance and prepare risk assessments when needed.Following an initial report by the EMCDDA, the European Commission will have two weeks to request an assessment of the potential risks posed by the new substance, which should be submitted within six weeks after the request. The Commission will then be able to adopt a decision banning the substance, without being obliged to consult the Council beforehand. Member states will have to apply the ban no later than six months after the Commission’s decision. Legislators expect, however, that most countries will be able to apply the ban much faster than that.
Europol will have a more significant role in the early-warning system and risk assessment procedure, to help determine the involvement of criminal organisations in the manufacture and distribution of new psychoactive substances.”Following the deal with Council, we will have an efficient mechanism at EU level to assess a new psychoactive substance and, if the assessment proves that it is dangerous, there will be a mechanism in place to remove it from the market. We need a fast and efficient system to deal with new substances that appear every year, often sold via the internet, posing a danger to our health, and particularly for young people”, said Michal Boni (EPP, PL), Parliament´s rapporteur for the changes to the EMCDDA Regulation.“New psychoactive substances are a major threat to the health and safety of European citizens. Each year, many young people die, particularly men, after having used ´legal highs´. The proliferation of online selling of drugs, and the ease with which NPS can be developed in a laboratory, is making it difficult for the authorities to tackle the spread”, noted Teresa Jiménez-Becerril (EPP, ES), responsible for the update to the Directive laying down minimum provisions on the constituent elements of criminal acts and penalties in the field of illicit drug trafficking, as regards the definition of drug.

Drugs: MEPs back changes to ensure quicker action against new substances

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 19 novembre 2016

drogheEU bodies will be able to react faster when new harmful psychoactive substances or “legal highs” appear in the market, thanks to the legislative changes approved on Thursday by the Civil Liberties committee. The main purpose is to strengthen the early warning system already in place and the risk assessment procedures. The update of the founding Regulation of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA, the EU drugs Agency) was backed by 48 MEPs, with 3 abstentions. The EMCDDA is in charge of monitoring all new psychoactive substances that have been reported by member states, and will also have to lead the exchange of information, draw a first report on any suspicious substance and organise risk assessments when needed.Under the new rules, deadlines for decision-making on new substances will be substantially reduced compared to the current system, which dates from 2005. Following the initial report by drugs agency, the Commission will have two weeks to request an assessment of the potential risks posed by the new substance, which should be submitted within six weeks after the demand. The European drugs agency will have to conclude working arrangements with other EU bodies, such as Europol, the European Medicines Agency and the European Food Safety Authority, to guarantee swift and effective collection of information.Europol will have a more relevant role in the early warning system and risk assessment procedure, to help determine the involvement of criminal groups in the manufacture and distribution of new psychoactive substances.
The committee also backed, by 48 votes to 1 with 3 abstantions, the mandate to open negotiations with the Council, with a view to concluding an agreement on the Regulation in first reading, as well as the negotiating team.

Italy’s Pharmaceutical Industry Value Will Drop to $18.6 Billion by 2020 due to Struggling Economy, says GlobalData

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 28 aprile 2016

eurozonaLONDON, UK (GlobalData) The pharmaceutical industry in Italy is set to decline from $21.3 billion in 2016 to $18.6 billion by 2020, at a negative compound annual growth rate of 3.3%, primarily due to the country’s struggling economy, according to research and consulting firm GlobalData. The company’s latest report states that the strict pricing of drugs through negotiations and external and internal reference pricing is a barrier to the launch of innovative molecules, and that sales of generics and over-the-counter drugs will increase over the forecast period.Adam Dion, MSc, GlobalData’s Senior Industry Analyst, explains: “The pharmaceutical industry in Italy will face a number of challenges over the next few years. An increase in the Italian government’s debt relative to GDP, and the country’s poor growth record, will decrease cash flow in the country, meaning the industry will stagnate.”
The Italian economy is also vulnerable to fluctuations in the demand and supply of goods and services in other countries. The Eurozone crisis is likely to result in lower demand for Italian products from other European countries, reducing exports and engendering a hostile environment for innovation or investment. India and China also present a threat as they have an edge in the generics market, and may usurp sales away from Italy’s domestic pharmaceutical space. Dion concludes: “Despite the tough economic environment faced by those operating within the Italian pharmaceutical industry, GlobalData believes there will be a number of opportunities to counteract declining sales, including efficient patent policies, E-Health programs, and government reforms to reduce public debt. Indeed, more companies will be interested in research and development after the Italian Patent and Trademark Office has created efficient patent policies to protect them.”

Faster and accurate identification of drugs causing allergic reactions: a great relief for patients

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 19 settembre 2014

A new diagnostic set to become the regular method for the diagnosis of cutaneous adverse drug reactions is faster, safe and easy to perform Allergic skin diseases are among the most frequently misunderstood diseases that allergists have to deal with
Experts confirm that better and faster diagnosis will help improve the quality of life of patients with allergic skin diseases
Krakow (Poland), Medication is a major pillar in the management of many diseases. But for some patients, their use can have detrimental effects including cutaneous adverse drug reactions (CADR), a common form of allergic skin disease, what can seriously impact on their quality of life. For allergists, CADR can prove time-consuming, especially with regard to diagnosis, since they often require the use of more than one analytic system to find the drug causing the allergy.Until recently, no universal method has been available, despite allergic reactionsintensive research in this field over the preceding decades. However, the diagnosis of CADR could now improve significantly thanks to a new method developed by a group of researchers led by Dr Grzegorz Porebski, Jagiellonian University, Department of Clinical and Environmental Allergology (Krakow, Poland). Faster, safer, more accurate and widely availableThe new technique is faster and more accurate than existing methods as it allows the accurate identification of the drug causing the reaction:“People usually take more than one drug together and it’s impossible to withdraw all this medication immediately. Patients would like to know which drug they can continue using and which one not, and this is a big challenge. Now they have a new tool that can improve the causality diagnosis to exclude the drug which has caused the allergy and it can be used in quite a large group of people affected by these reactions,” explains Dr Porebski. In addition, the method is safer because it doesn’t require exposure of the patient to the drug, as it is performed in vitro with a blood sample. Another advantage is that the technique is easy to perform and could be easily available in health centres, as opposed to other methods which are more expensive and therefore not accessible to all patients. This new diagnostic method has been studied in a drug whose use is widespread among Europeans – carbamazepine – which is prescribed in cases of epilepsy, psychiatric disorders or neurophatic pain. However, the study is also to confirm the method’s efficiency in the use of antibiotics and new phases will be extended to other drugs.Dr Porebski will present the implications of this new method at the Third Skin Allergy Meeting (SAM) organised by the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI). The meeting is being held in Krakow, Poland, starting today until Saturday. Europe’s leading researchers and clinicians in the field of skin allergy are gathering at SAM to share their expertise with participants on a wide range of topics from contact dermatitis, atopic eczema, urticaria and angioedema, to mastocytosis and anaphylaxis, drug and food allergies and the skin, diagnostics in skin allergy and hand eczema.
Allergies can be seen in almost every organ. Most commonly, however, it is the skin and the mucous membranes that are involved since they represent the frontier between the individual and their environment. Despite being so common, allergic skin diseases are among the least understood, and most frequently misunderstood, diseases the allergists have to deal with. The umbrella term for a local inflammation of the skin should be dermatitis. What is generally known as “atopic eczema/dermatitis” is not one, single disease but rather an aggregation of several diseases with certain characteristics in common.According to Professor Radoslaw Spiewak, Professor and Head of the Department of Experimental Dermatology and Cosmetology of the Jagiellonian University Medical College and President of the Local Organising Committee for the EAACI SAM, one of the common mistakes that allergists make is to consider all forms of eczema as atopic dermatitis. Another frequent error is to blame food allergy as the major cause of allergic skin diseases. Moreover, various types of eczema may co-exist in a patient, overlapping, and being replaced by one another. Sometimes, this situation occurs without being noticed by patient or doctor. Despite a similar appearance, the diversity of mechanisms underlying allergic skin diseases requires diverse and complex approaches.

Drugs: MEPs want harmful “legal highs” to be withdrawn quickly from the EU market

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 15 marzo 2014

drogheEU rules enabling harmful psychoactive substances, also known as “legal highs”, to be quickly withdrawn from the EU market were voted by the Civil Liberties Committee on Monday. MEPs want to protect the health and safety of young people from these substances, while ensuring that trade for industrial and commercial uses is not hindered. Criminals who breach the ban on severe risk substances could face up to 10 years in jail.
The proposed EU rules aim to tackle the emergence and rapid spread of new psychoactive substances (NPS), which imitate the effects of illicit drugs such as ecstasy and cocaine. More than 300 new substances have been detected in Europe since 1997 and the problem has worsened in recent years: the number of NPS identified between 2009 and 2012 tripled (from 24 to 73 a year). Last year, on average one new substance was detected every week in the EU. The current EU system for banning the so-called “legal highs” is not fit to respond to this growing problem.
A 2011 Eurobarometer survey showed that 5% of young people in the EU have used such substances at least once in their life, with a peak of 16% in Ireland, and close to 10% in Poland, Latvia and the UK.

The Economist: this week

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 14 aprile 2011

This week we focus on two big foreign affairs issues–unusually, for 2011, not ones in the Arab world. China is experiencing the worst repression of political dissent since Tiananmen Square in 1989, undermining the comfortable notion that political liberalisation will follow prosperity. We suspect this is linked to the rise of a new ruling class, much of it drawn from a revolutionary aristocracy, which for reasons of ideological conviction or political self-interest wants to entrench the power of the party still further. On the other side of the world, Central America is suffering an upsurge of terrible violence as a result of the spread of the drug war. Mexico has had some success combatting the gangs who run drugs into the United States, with the result that they have moved into a bunch of small countries whose states are far too weak to cope. Also in this week’s issue:
• A wasted vote: The campaign for the referendum on electoral reform insults Britons’ intelligence
• Gbagbo captured: End of the road for Cote d’Ivoire’s stubborn ruler
• Britain’s banks: New proposals for regulating them
• What can you buy for $3 trillion? Ideas for spending
China’s massive  foreign reserves
• Lunch and judgment: How meals affect justice
Nella sezione Europe l’analisi sul problema degli immigrati in Italia e sulle dichiarazioni del ministro Maroni: Take my migrants, please – An influx of north Africans causes a headache for the government Ed inoltre:
– L’editoriale sulla Cina che sta vivendo la peggiore repressione del dissenso politico da Piazza Tiananmen, nel 1989, minando la nozione confortevole che la liberalizzazione politica seguirà la prosperità. Questo potrebbe essere legato alla nascita di una nuova classe dirigente, in gran parte frutto di un’aristocrazia rivoluzionaria, che per ragioni di convinzione ideologica o politica di interessi vuole consolidare il potere del partito ulteriormente: China’s crackdown – The vindictiveness of China’s rules betrays their nervousness
The drug war hits Central America – Organised crime is moving south from Messico into a bunch of small countries far too weak to deal with it

Discover why some women are sub-fertile

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 1 luglio 2010

Rome, Italy: Researchers have discovered that some women carry a genetic variation that makes them sub-fertile and less likely to respond to ovarian stimulating hormones during fertility treatment. The discovery opens the way to identifying these women and devising personalised fertility treatments that could bypass the problem caused by the genetic abnormality. The abnormal FSHR contained a deleted sequence of protein called exon 2 that is an important part of the protein that binds the FSH; FSHR with the exon 2 deletion was only detected in women younger than 35 who had a poor response to FSH and yielded less than four oocytes in a follicle stimulating cycle. Future research will examine the FSHR signalling mechanisms within the cell and investigate how newly developed drugs might bypass the problems created by the genetic abnormality. “In the future, this could lead to personalised treatments for a sub-group of patients,” said Dr Lalioti. It is not known how many women have this particular genetic variation. Dr Lalioti found it in two out of five women that she tested. “These patients are hard to recruit because most patients with a low response to FSH do not complete the IVF cycle for financial reasons,” she said. “We need to recruit more patients to discover how common it is.” She and her colleagues will need a year to recruit and test more women, to set up collaborations with more fertility centres and to start to test new drugs that could promote oocyte production more effectively in these women.

National D.A.R.E. day, 2009

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 9 aprile 2009

The White House Drugs, gangs, and violence threaten our children and communities every day. Today we commemorate Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), a program that has worked to educate children and protect them from these problems. National D.A.R.E. Day provides the opportunity to reflect upon the dangers of drugs, gangs, and violence and to emphasize efforts to combat these threats.  From inner cities to suburbs and rural communities, gangs and drug dealers prey upon youth across the United States. Unaware of the dangers of drug abuse and violence, many youth surrender the promise of a bright future. Every child lost in this battle represents a tragedy for our Nation, and we must do more to stop it. Education efforts to help children avoid drugs and violence must begin in the home. Parents must be positive role models and take the lead in advising their children on the effects of drugs on their health and well-being. The D.A.R.E. program has worked to educate students about drugs, gangs, and violence for more than 25 years. Placing law-enforcement personnel in the classroom, D.A.R.E. provides students with important lessons from experts and seeks to prepare them for the difficult encounters and choices they may face. Today we honor D.A.R.E. for its important work. The efforts of D.A.R.E.’s instructors and supporters benefit our Nation’s children and are deserving of praise and appreciation. D.A.R.E.’s renewed efforts to implement science-based programs and to strengthen partnerships among law enforcement, families, and their communities are particularly worthy of commendation. Through effective teaching methods and broad participation, D.A.R.E. can help ensure that every child in America enjoys the opportunities he or she deserves. (Barack Obama)
