“Kill Sharks and You Kill the Marine Ecosystem”

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 23 aprile 2019

Sharks are often perceived to be man-eating killers of the ocean, but Safeguard of the Seas founder McKeever tells C.M. Rubin, founder of CMRubinWorld, that in reality, sharks are evolutionary marvels and misunderstood creatures that are essential to maintaining the health of the world’s oceans. In his new book, Emperors of the Deep (HarperOne June 25, 2019), Mckeever interviews world-renowned shark experts about the role sharks really play and says their rapid decline in population towards extinction is causing ocean life to deteriorate. “People don’t appreciate that when sharks are killed, a keystone species is removed from the ocean forever,” says McKeever. “These animals maintain the reefs, guard the seagrass and watch over ecosystems on the high seas for the benefit of the planet and for all mankind.”McKeever believes education and youth are key to raising awareness and taking action about environmental issues the planet faces, especially when it comes to global warming. “The current leadership, which has failed to protect the planet, will inevitably be replaced by a new generation,” McKeever says. “This young generation has literally the weight of the world on their shoulders and they must be prepared when they take over.”
William McKeever is the author of Emperors of the Deep (HarperOne June 25, 2019), an upcoming book which reveals new research supported by leading experts in marine life on how sharks are necessary for the health of our planet. He is also a filmmaker, conservationist and Safeguard of the Seas founder.CMRubinWorld’s award-winning series, The Global Search for Education, brings together distinguished thought leaders in education and innovation from around the world to explore the key learning issues faced by most nations. Teacher Training Must Change to Keep Up with the Emerging Ecosystem of Education

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 17 febbraio 2019

The world is in a constant state of evolution and change, and this is having a big impact on learning and professional development for teachers. According to Professor Larry V. Hedges, Yidan Prize for Education Research Laureate 2018, teacher training must evolve as well. In a new interview with C.M. Rubin, founder of CMRubinWorld, Hedges explains that in the past, teaching practice was determined “by initial training in universities and teacher training colleges, apprenticeship, and experience,” but moving forward, teaching professionals will need to function like the medical professionals do today. He notes “doctors have wide autonomy, but their practice is informed by a constantly advancing medical science.” He says that teachers must learn to function as professionals “who believe that research can improve practice and that sometimes large scale research is the only way to know what works.” Education research has become a critical part of ensuring nations have an educated workforce to meet economic progress. Hedges believes better research will dramatically improve education outcomes over the next half century similar to the advances made in healthcare in the 20th century. He predicts that in 50 years, we will live in a world where “every student will perform as well as the very best students do today.”
Professor Larry V. Hedges is the Yidan Prize for Education Research Laureate 2018. He is the Chairman of the Department of Statistics, Northwestern University. Hedges is one of the most influential applied statisticians in the world. His work in educational policy allows policymakers, educators and the general public to see the evidence for “what works” in the field of education.CMRubinWorld’s award-winning series, The Global Search for Education, brings together distinguished thought leaders in education and innovation from around the world to explore the key learning issues faced by most nations. UN: Environment laws not being enforced

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 1 febbraio 2019

A huge proliferation in environmental legislation around the world is failing to prevent widespread ecosystem destruction and runaway carbon emissions, as laws are not being enforced, according to a new report from UN environment.
“This report solves the mystery of why problems such as pollution, declining biodiversity and climate change persist despite the proliferation of environmental laws in recent decades,” David Boyd, UN special rapporteur on human rights and the environment said, “Unless the environmental rule of law is strengthened, even seemingly rigorous rules are destined to fail and the fundamental human right to a healthy environment will go unfulfilled.” Since 1972 there has been a 38-fold increase in environmental laws, and more than 1,100 environmental agreements have been signed between countries. Around 150 countries have enshrined environmental protection or the right to a healthy environment into their constitutions. More than 50 countries have created environmental courts and tribunals. As of 2017, 164 countries had created environment ministries or equivalents. However, these measures often exist “mostly on paper”, UN Environment found, with enforcement generally lax or ineffective. This has undermined efforts to prevent the world from passing through critical environmental and ecological thresholds. Last October, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a concerning report noting that the world needs to make dramatic changes in how it produces and uses energy and food, and how it manages landscapes and ecosystems, in order to prevent catastrophic global warming. “We have the machinery in the form of laws, regulations and agencies to govern our environment sustainably,” Joyce Msuya, acting executive director of UN Environment said. “Political will is now critical to making sure our laws work for the planet.” (by responsiblebusiness.com)

Explorer Drone in Australia for Consumers and Professionals

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 8 novembre 2017

Cairns australiaCairns. Blueye Robotics, developer of Blueye Pioneer underwater drone that dives eight times deeper than the average scuba enthusiast, will launch in Australia this month. The prosumer underwater drone is suitable for ocean explorers of every type who want to discover what lies beneath the ocean, yet has the professional robustness to meet with scientific and enterprise use. First to use the drone is Dr. Dean Miller, director for science and media with the Great Barrier Reef Legacy, who embarks on a 21-day expedition to explore the Reef’s most remote, unexplored reaches and assess the region’s declining coral reef corridor.Blueye’s arctic-tested Pioneer underwater drone is able to dive up to 150 meters deep even in the harshest ocean conditions, and has capabilities that were previously found only in expensive professional equipment used by filmmakers, oceanographers and the military.
“This collaboration with the Great Barrier Reef Legacy offers a whole new tool for the expedition crew to unobtrusively navigate the coral reef,” says Christine Spiten, Blueye co-founder and chief global strategist, who will spend several days in Cairns, Australia, with the research team before it begins its three-week expedition. “The Blueye Pioneer is also valuable to anybody who is curious about the ocean and wants to see what lies beneath the hidden depths below us. These drones can help us uncover new information about the seas.”The Great Barrier Reef Legacy expedition, led by Miller and John Rumney and joined by Charlie Veron, the world’s leading expert on coral reefs, as well as other leading marine scientists from a range of universities and government organisations in Australia, will help better understand the nature of the problems facing this fragile coral reef and the recent coral bleaching that scientists attribute to warming ocean temperatures.“The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is an area that is remote, large and hard to access,” says Miller. “Researchers have been unable to fully assess what is happening to the most pristine part of the northern Great Barrier Reef, so we are looking forward to using the Blueye’s Pioneer drone to help us better understand the changing nature of this fragile ecosystem, especially on the deeper slopes where divers simply cannot access. This gives us a whole new way of understanding how the whole ecosystem has responded to heat stress, and will provide the first detailed look at deeper coral habitats.” (font photo: wikipedia)

Intelligent Mobility Ecosystem Leverages User-Focused Smartphone Business

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 14 novembre 2015

smartphoneLondon – 12 November, 2015 – The mobility ecosystem will draw inspiration from the user-interface oriented and service-driven, smartphone business model, to render car ownership an option for consumers. The subscription and user model of accessing vehicles will coexist alongside the traditional sales and ownership model, thereby enabling mobility-on-demand solutions for every commuting need. Even though a new analysis from Frost & Sullivan, The Future of Intelligent Mobility and its Impact on Transportation (http://ow.ly/TYZwL), expects a large fraction of vehicles-in-operation to still be manually driven in 2035, these vehicles will be far more intelligent than those of today. “The Automotive Council UK proposes the move from a siloistic approach towards an integrated approach to achieve the global transportation industry’s goals of safer, cleaner and leaner mobility,” said Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst Kamalesh Mohanarangam. “Vehicle automation, cooperative driving, new mobility models, alternative propulsion, and traffic flow optimisation will be important elements in this pursuit.” For now, Europe is focusing on connectivity, automation and technology, while North America leverages an innovative and transformative solution built using transportation data collated through a system of connected vehicles, mobile devices and roads. Japan, on the other hand, is in the midst of a highly people-centric initiative that connects vehicles and traffic environments to alleviate the mobility hardships of an aging population. “These vigorous efforts towards an intelligent mobility era can be explained by considering the benefits that could be gained,” noted said Frost & Sullivan Senior Analyst Arunprasad Nandakumar. “Intelligent mobility holds the potential to achieve up to 40 percent crash reduction through effective incident management and enhanced collision avoidance. New transport modes like ride sharing/car sharing and rapid transits can also lead to 25 percent travel time savings in major cities and a slash in mobility spending by six billion dollars.” Furthermore, an intelligent mobility network could boost fuel savings due to the increase in average travel speed. The combined effect of this is an average reduction in travel stops by 40 percent and drop in CO2 levels by 15 percent. “Having said all this, the transportation industry still has a long way to go,” said Mohanarangam. “The biggest technological challenge the industry faces is to attain a near-human driving feel in automated mode. As algorithms written for the initial deployment of automated vehicles cater to conditional automation and cannot deal with complex scenarios, employing artificial intelligence seems crucial at this juncture.” The Future of Intelligent Mobility and its Impact on Transportation (MAF4-18) is part of the Future of Mobility (http://ow.ly/TYZYU) Growth Partnership Service program. Frost & Sullivan’s related studies include: European and North American Market for Automated Driving, European Market for Vehicle-to-Vehicle and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Communication Systems, and Impact of Big Data on the European and North American Automotive Industry.
