eFuel Alliance: Climate-neutral aviation only with CO2-neutral fuels

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 6 luglio 2022

Brussels/Strasbourg. Ahead of this week’s plenary vote on the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, MEPs as well as industry and environmental experts criticised the EU Commission’s plans and called for higher blending mandates of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and eFuels at an event organised by the eFuel Alliance. “I strongly believe that eFuels are the future of aviation,” said MEP Ciaran Cuffe. CO2-neutral fuels will also profit from price development and economies of scale, Cuffe stressed: “eFuels may be expensive now, but the greater the supply, the lower the price and that comes from a clear signal to the market by the ReFuelEU Aviation proposal. Look at what has happened with renewables over the last few years. When we are serious about new technologies, prices fall to the point where they are more competitive than less sustainable alternatives, and the same is true for eFuels”. The market for synthetic fuels in aviation will grow and become more attractively priced, Silke Bölts, Aviation Policy Officer at the NGO umbrella organisation Transport & Environment (T&E), also underlined. “We have found in a study that the production capacities for e-kerosene in Europe until 2030 and beyond are significantly higher than the Commission’s estimates.” Of course, this development would depend on the political framework conditions, but the technical possibilities for production could be 1.83 Mt in 2030 – compared to the less than 0.4 Mt projected by the Commission. Bölts: “Finally, companies have to assess the market and the market opportunities. Companies need those blending mandates because the investors need to be sure that the product will also be sold”. Today, less than one per cent of aviation fuel worldwide comes from renewable sources, which provides immense potential, Dr. David Zaziski, Vice President of Infinium, also pointed out. “But this is where the opportunities lie to reduce greenhouse gases and achieve air quality benefits. What is often overlooked is that aviation fuel is actually harder to make given its tighter specifications. As a result, it takes extra processing and extra cost compared to diesel for road transport,” Zaziski said. Initiatives like the EU’s showed that there needed to be specific policy incentives for aviation fuel from renewables, “with clear targets, so that we can rapidly advance the SAF market”. Samuel Maubanc, Head of EU Affairs at Neste, also underlined the need for a clear framework: “We need to have realistic regulatory rules for Power to X for SAF starting now, because it’s a new market”. He also spoke out against cherry-picking preferred options, or even worse, pitching one technology against another, as climate targets should always be kept in mind. “Fossil fuels must be replaced by renewable energies, that is the order of the day”, Maubanc emphasized. “Both HEFA SAF, based on waste and residues, and eFuels will be badly needed to decarbonise aviation, and Neste is investing in all of them”, Maubanc added. The role of biofuels was also discussed, the definition of which was expanded during the vote in the lead committee TRAN. The eFuel Alliance is an interest group working for the political and social acceptance of eFuels and for their approval. We represent more than 170 companies, associations, and consumer organizations along the eFuel production value chain. We stand for fair competition and a level playing field for all relevant emission reduction solutions. We are clearly committed to greater climate protection and want to see the significant contribution of eFuels to sustainability and climate protection more widely recognized. Our goal is to enable the industrial production and widespread use of CO2-neutral fuels from renewable energy sources.

eFuel Alliance calls for higher ambition level for eFuels in aviation

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 3 luglio 2022

Berlin/Brussels. Regarding the vote on the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation in the European Parliament’s Transport Committee, Ralf Diemer, Managing Director of the eFuel Alliance, states: “Climate-neutral aviation can only be achieved with CO2-neutral fuels. It is up to the Parliament to create a good negotiating basis for the upcoming trilogue by voting in favour of higher blending quotas of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and eFuels. The compromise adopted in the Transport Committee is a step in the right direction, but not sufficient. We need ambitious quotas and we need synthetic fuels to achieve the ambitious climate targets. Unfortunately, there is no alternative to liquid fuels in aviation for the near future. This makes binding high quotas even more important to de-fossilize aviation and to stimulate investments in renewable fuels,” Diemer said.”We call for a blending in 2030 of at least 10% sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) including a sub-quota for eFuels of 2%. The quotas should increase to 75% SAF and a subquota of 53% eFuels in 2050. The cost of eFuels will not only decrease rapidly due to economies of scale, unlike what critics claim, but would also be financially supported by emissions trading, according to the European Parliament’s vote on the EU ETS. We will make extensive use of renewable energy for the production of synthetic fuels, which will be produced in locations around the world where wind and solar are abundant.”The plenary vote on the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation will take place on July 7. eFuel Alliance: CO2 emission comparison in T&E study lacks any basis

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 28 giugno 2022

Berlin. With clear words, the eFuel Alliance rejects a recent study by the lobby organization Transport & Environment. The CO2 emissions comparison presented by T&E lacks any basis, said Dr. Tobias Block, Head of Strategy and Content of the interest group eFuel Alliance. “Respect! T&E has presented a special communicative feat: a study showing that internal combustion engines with 100 percent eFuels are just as climate-friendly as e-cars in Sweden, a country with a very low CO2 footprint in energy supply, they sell in such a way that the opposite seems to come out.” Synthetic fuels made precisely from renewable energy sources, known as eFuels, are one of the most effective measures in the fight against global warming. These days, Germany is arguing about its position in the EU Cabinet of Ministers. T&E has played a big part in this with its one-sided campaigning for a ban on internal combustion vehicles and against counting eFuels as part of CO2 fleet regulation, the eFuel Alliance suspects. “It would be better to discuss with more facts and less populism. T&E once again shows a lack of due diligence in the preparation of their so-called ‘studies’ and aims to mislead the public,” Block pointed out. “With this sometimes flat and intellectually undemanding way in which T&E presents supposed facts, the NGO also ends up doing no favors to its actual goal of forcing electromobility and restricting individual mobility. It is completely incomprehensible what is to be gained by T&E acting like a moderately serious lobbying organization to enforce electromobility. Our goal is to enable the industrial production and widespread use of CO2-neutral fuels from renewable energy sources.

efuel Alliance: Europe must finally solve its energy dilemma

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 25 Maggio 2022

Brüssel/Berlin, The eFuel Alliance has welcomed the EU-Commission’s RePowerEU plan as an additional booster for the Fit-for-55 climate package currently discussed in Brussels. “The EU Commission made a clear decision on the direction. In addition to expanding renewable energies domestically, we will have to step up our efforts in global energy partnerships to solve the energy dilemma.,” said Dr. Monika Griefahn, founding member of Greenpeace Germany, former Environment minister of Lower Saxony and chair for the eFuel Alliance.Among other things, the EU Commission proposes to further increase the share of renewable energies in the final energy consumption – instead of 40 percent as originally proposed, the target is now to be raised to 45 percent. Accordingly, the Commission recommends increasing the sub-target for renewable hydrogen and eFuels in transport sector, which is also included in the Renewable Energy Directive, to five percent. “In view of the current energy crisis, this step is absolutely right and an important signal that the European Council and Parliament should now urgently heed,” Monika Griefahn welcomed the Commission’s move. However, the chair of the eFuel Alliance expressed her disappointment that the EU Commission – although announced – has still not submitted a delegated act on power purchase criteria for green hydrogen and its derivates such as eFuels. “We urgently need a pragmatic proposal for the market uptake of eFuels. On the one hand, the EU Commission wants to push the green hydrogen economy, but on the other hand, it is not in a position to present the necessary legislation – yet the deadline for this already expired at the end of last year. There is a glaring gap between aspiration and reality here.” To make the transition to a renewable energy system, the EU should also strengthen the role of hydrogen-based eFuels. Being a climate-neutral energy carrier, eFuels solve the problem of storing and transporting renewable energies. Produced in regions rich in solar and wind energy, eFuels are the most cost-effective solution to unlock the global potential of renewables. “Europe needs to make more timely and targeted efforts to establish energy partnerships on an equal footing with countries where conditions are particularly favorable for electricity production from renewable sources.” On average, a wind turbine in Chile has four times more full-load hours than a comparable turbine in Germany. “However, South America as an important strategic energy partner is not on the Commission’s radar at all. Instead, the strategy paper focuses on fossil gas like LNG. This is understandable as a short-term measure to cushion the consequences of an potential supply stop from Russia. However, the Commission fails to set the course for long-term sustainable projects at the same time,” the expert said. “We need to lay the groundwork today so that we have a diverse energy supply with renewable fuels tomorrow.” Further information: http://www.efuel-alliance.eu
