One Source. Ryan Chittum criticizes the Financial Times for a paper-thin story on outsourcing in India versus the U.S. Rarely will you see a front page story as thin as this one, but if you do it will probably also be in the FT. The Low Road. Chittum slams CBS News for its embarrassing trove of online slideshows, including “9 Most Awkward Breastfeeding Situations” and “Tila Tequila Attacked.” The network of Murrow and Cronkite is reduced to this? Sell That to the Judge. Chittum looks at how judiciary are continuing to push back against lenient government settlements with corporate wrongdoers—this time with Citigroup. Bankingviews? Chittum also rips into Reuters Breakingviews for a blame-the-borrowers column on the housing crash. All of Breakingviews’ recommendations apply to lenders just as well or more than they apply to borrowers. The changes that caused the crisis were all on the lending side of things. That’s where the focus—and the frame—ought to be.
Tabloid Appeal. Chittum tweaks The Wall Street Journal for its lackluster page one earlier this week. Did the Journal really need to go six columns with a picture of the Colombia plane crash that killed one person?
Bubble Brains. A Federal Reserve paper on housing-bubble predictions doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in the central bank, Chittum writes. One simple chart belies all the academic mumbo-jumbo the Fed can muster.
