The robust properties and significant cost advantages of plastics over metals is accelerating market growth

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 7 febbraio 2014

london-centralLONDON The need for light-weight materials amongautomotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and componentmanufacturers is accelerating the demand for automotive plastics in Europe.
The use of plastics can reduce the number of parts required for a specificapplication, cut down on processing costs, and facilitate fuel savings between five to seven percent for every ten percent drop in vehicle weight. In addition to environmental sustainability, plastics enable enhanced design flexibility and passenger safety features such as shock absorption in bumpers, reduced explosion risks in under-the-hood (UTH) applications and life-saving accessories such as air bags and seat belts.Light-weighting Role of Performance Plastics in the European Automotive Market, finds that the market earned revenues of $4.22 billion in 2013 and estimates this to reach $7.26 billion in 2019. While the recent economic slowdown has led to diminished car ownership interest in many countries, especially Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece, the
automotive plastics market will be sustained by the shift in focus towards more fuel-efficient, smaller, economy class vehicles. The study covers virgin compounds and polymeric blends.Plastics also offer significant cost advantages over metals. While metals
are cheaper than plastic materials on a cost-per-unit basis, the latter remain a more feasible alternative due to lower processing, assembling and finishing costs. The cost of plastics will fall further when standardisation and mass production commence. The rising use of reinforced and composite material in automotive
applications, however, poses a threat to virgin plastic compounds. The maturity of certain polymers for specific applications – such as the use of PU polymers for seating applications and PP polymers for interior applications – further limits growth potential. “Market participants should focus on the exterior and UTH application
segments rather than the interior application segment, where opportunities are relatively saturated,” advised Shankar. “They must also forge close relationships with customers and gain sound technical expertise and backward-integrated resin manufacturing capability to stand out in the European automotive market.”

Nuove regole sulla gestione dei rifiuti elettronici

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 22 gennaio 2012

English: Weee Man, Eden Project WEEE stands fo...

Image via Wikipedia

Bruxelles, Parlamento europeo.

The first SoPRanoTM

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 27 agosto 2010

Brussels PharmaDiagnostics NV, a company developing and marketing a broadly-enabling, label-free screening technology that uniquely does not require specialized equipment, announces the launch of its SoPRanoTM assay kit, SoPRano CA1.  The new kit allows users to couple their own proteins to SoPRano gold nanoparticles and build and run their own assays. This was previously available only as a service provided by PharmaDiagnostics, and the new kit will now greatly expand the accessibility and utility of the technology to customers. SoPRano technology is based on a variant of the well-established surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomenon, and for the first time makes label-free screening available in high throughput on a standard plate-reader.
PharmaDiagnostics’ SoPRano label-free platform is the first SPR-based system to utilize standard plate-readers, and simple assay protocols. This increases for researchers, lowers barrier to adoption and also offers excellent scalability, thus lowering costs, as it is not necessary to increase instrument expenditure to increase throughput.
PharmaDiagnostics NV develops label-free screening technology with the unique capability in its market of operating without the need for specialized hardware. The technology is broadly enabling and applicable to a range of applications including: receptor-ligand binding; enzymatic reactions; antibody screening and ADME. The assays are very sensitive and have the potential for very high throughput. The company is focused upon developing assay kits for use in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and also offers bespoke assay development services. PharmaDiagnostics’ novel technology platform, SoPRanoTM, is based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and noble metal nanoparticles, and is run on standard laboratory equipment.

Fight against piracy

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 19 aprile 2010

The five ships of NATO’s Task Force conducting counter piracy operations have been at the centre of the fight against piracy in the waters off Somalia in recent days.  Operating deep in the Indian Ocean, the Greek warship HS LIMNOS saw action against 3 pirate groups in as many days.  Working closely with Swedish and Luxemburg maritime patrol aircraft operating from the Seychelles, the frigate destroyed 6 pirate attack boats together with all of their weapons and other piracy equipment between 7 and 9 April.  As a result 30 pirates can no longer attack innocent merchant vessels.  In the Gulf of Aden, on 3 April the Turkish frigate TCG GELIBOLU rushed to the assistance of the Danish flagged chemical carrier MV TORM RAGNHILD that was being attacked by 6 pirates with AK 47 rifles and rocket propelled grenades.  On arrival of the warship the pirates quickly re-embarked on their ‘mother-ship’; the hijacked dhow MSF SAFINA AL GAYATRI.  Subsequent actions by TCG GELIBOLU forced the pirates to release the 21 Indian crew unharmed together with the cargo of livestock in the early hours of 4 April, 10 miles to the North East of Boosaaso, the regional capital of Puntland, Somalia. Most recently the NATO Task Force flagship, HMS CHATHAM, has been involved in a 5 day operation to release the Indian dhow VISHVAKAYLAN after intercepting the dhow 100 miles to the North East of Socotra on 6 April. The hijacked dhow, with 8 pirates onboard had been involved in an attempt to capture the merchant vessel MV HAMBURG BRIDGE on 5 April.  The fifth ship of the Task Force, the Italian frigate ITS SCIROCCO, made a brief refuelling stop in the Seychelles following a successful operation on 16 March to release the hijacked Iranian dhow SAAD 1 which had been acting as a mother ship. In addition, Scirocco rescued 3 stranded men who had been adrift at sea without food, water or fuel for 4 days some 250 miles from land.  The warship has now resumed her patrol deep in the Indian Ocean ready to intercept pirate groups making their way out to the shipping lanes.
The NATO Task Force 508 conducting Operation Ocean Shield is one of three coalition task forces operating in the fight against piracy. TF 508 consists presently of five ships:HMS CHATHAM (Flagship – Royal Navy) USS COLE (US Navy) TCG GELIBOLU (Turkish Navy) HS LIMNOS (Greek Navy)   ITS SCIROCCO (Italian Navy)
