Bordeaux offers each visitor the chance to dive into the experience of the city through a series of ambitious urban renewal projects, integrative sustainable planning, and using the knowledge of the experts of Bordeaux to fuel the information available: the residents. France remains pro-European! Congratulations, Monsieur le Président!”

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 4 Maggio 2022

The whole European Union had its eyes on France these days. It would have been unthinkable if the run-off election in its Member State, one of the six founding members, had not gone in favour of Emmanuel Macron. It would have been a political earthquake not only in France but in the entire EU. In his first term in office, President Emmanuel Macron has succeeded in making France once again an “engine with high horsepower“ in view of European integration. He gave new political impetus to the European project, which had fallen into the status quo as a result of the many crises of the last decade. Needless to remind that it was Macron who first called for the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE); it is also due to him that today we are again talking about a common European defence.”Many times – too many times – Europe has been at a crossroads. The European Union needs France as a strong Member State, especially because democracies in some Member States are currently under pressure. Likewise, the disregard for the rule of law in some countries requires united and decisive action at European level. With the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine, Europe is facing the question of survival in terms of its values and its political order. The time to complete the European project, which was created precisely to prevent war and despotism in Europe, is now“, states the UEF President. “Right now, the EU is demonstrating unity and determination in the face of this dramatic common threat; but once again its strength is in reaction, and has not been in action. EU lacks genuine competences in foreign and security policy, in defence policy, in industrial and energy policy, and in one word it is not politically equipped to act effectively. Even its economic union is incomplete, since we do not have a fiscal union and a federal budget”, Sandro GOZI concludes.Emmanuel Macron is thus the first President since Jacques Chirac elected in office for a second term. However, the result of the two candidates this time was much closer than in 2017. While the gap between Macron and the right-wing populist candidate in the run-off the election in 2017 was more than 30 %, today it is 17 %. “If you take a closer look and include the turnout of 72 %, the election result should be seen as a wake-up call. Especially for us pro-European civil society organisations working to strengthen the democracy and in particular the European democracy, this election result gives a clear mandate and shows the need for even greater engagement at the local level. As Union of European Federalists, we take this mandate and will intensify our efforts in the promotion of European democracy and values. We will also support our UEF-section in France to grow at the local level. However, this is not only a need in France but also in other Member States. If we do not succeed in convincing the citizens of the need of a united Europe, the European project will have no future”, says UEF President Sandro GOZI. As a member of the CoFoE, the UEF, which exists for over 75 years, has repeatedly pointed out the special importance of organised civil society in the context of European integration. In June, Europe will once again look to France for the election of the National Assembly.

European Defence Fund: MEPs reach a deal with the Council

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 16 dicembre 2020

MEPs and the German presidency of the Council reached an agreement on Monday on a 7.9 billion euro envelope in support of common R&D defence projects. In the 7 years to come, The European Defence Fund (EDF) will cover projects jointly agreed by Member States and compatible with the Union’s defence priorities as defined within the framework of the Common Security and Defence Policy. The Fund will also take into consideration Member States’ cooperation within other regional and international organisations such as NATO.The Fund will finance collaborative projects involving at least 3 participants from 3 Member States, provide co-funding for common prototypes and promote cross-border activities of small and medium-sized enterprises by e.g. providing higher financing for the projects that involve such companies. Moreover, the Fund will also dedicate up to 8% of the funds to disruptive technologies and offer an additional 10% bonus for the eligible projects developed within the framework of the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO). Above all, the Fund should contribute to reduce duplication and strengthen interoperability of the defence systems used by European armed forces.“This compromise, just as the whole Fund, is an important signal sent by the Member States to their citizens and companies: from now on, we want to pull our resources together in order to increase quality of defence technologies produced by the European defence sector, while reducing their cost. This progress should benefit not only Member States’ armed forces, but also their industries, which desperately need every possible stimulus helping them to properly recover from the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the Fund will complement Member States’ defence spending efforts and should thus be perceived as part of a broader answer to the justified demands from our Allies.” said lead MEP Zdzisław Krasnodębski (ECR, PL), EP rapporteur on the file. The provisional agreement will be put to a vote in the forthcoming meeting of the Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE).

The European Federalists call on the European Parliament to propose a limited but radical Treaty revision

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 28 Maggio 2020

The ongoing discussion on the creation of new financial instruments to address the social and economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis, and in particular the recent joint proposals by the French and German governments for a EUR 500 billion Recovery Fund funded by the issuance of European debt calls for a radical change in the European Union’s budget.Sandro GOZI, MEP, President of the Union of European Federalists, stated today “The most urgent issue is certainly the creation of European resources so that the European Union can issued debt without asking higher contributions from Member States but establishing new financial resources at European level, in particular focusing on digital and financial giants and on polluters. This is the only way to ensure that any debt issued by the European Union can be guaranteed by and eventually repaid by the EU budget and does not have to rely on direct or indirect guarantees by Member States and their ability to repay such debt”.
To this end, however, it is essential to reform the Treaties, and in particular the decision-making on the establishment of new European sources of revenues amending only a few specific articles of the Treaties to ensure that the European Parliament and the Council by majority vote can establish Union’s own resources and at the same time eliminating the need for agreement by the national parliament of the Member States. Such a reform would establish an autonomous fiscal capacity of the European Union as indispensable contribution to the long-term sustainability of the new financial instruments currently under negotiation as well as to a qualitative and quantitative transformation of the European budget. In an open letter to MEPs today, the European Federalists call on the European Parliament to propose the required amendment to the Treaties and ask the other EU institutions to commence the related process of treaty revision. The rapid implementation of fiscal union is also the premise and the basis for the opening of the institutional work in view of the Conference on the future of Europe, that can then focus on achieving a true political union. The European Parliament has the democratic legitimacy and the institutional vocation to impose such an agenda on the Conference, and to elaborate and propose to the other European institutions and the Conference a project for a European Federal Constitution – similarly to what it did in the first legislature under the leadership of Altiero Spinelli.

European Maritime Day 2020

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 29 febbraio 2020

Cork City Hall and surroundings on 14 and 15 May 2020 will take place the EMD Conference and Expo. We are entering an exciting new decade, a blue decade that valorises the role of our seas and oceans and works towards balancing ocean economy and ocean health. Whether it concerns the EU’s goal to become carbon neutral by 2050 and achieve a new ‘Green Deal’, or to deliver a sustainable economy that works for people, the European Union’s maritime policy, the EU’s Ocean Mission and its blue economy strategy have a key role to play. Since 2008 the European Maritime Day is being hosted each year by a different port city, providing a unique maritime flavour and offering stakeholders an opportunity to meet and showcase their activities. In 2020, the City of Cork will open its gates and its safe harbour to Europe’s maritime stakeholders. The European Maritime Day 2020 will be held in conjunction with ‘Our Ocean Wealth’ (OOW), Ireland’s flagship annual event for the marine sector and will be run back-to-back with ‘SeaFest’, Ireland’s largest family-friendly marine festival, expecting up to 100,000 visitors. The Latin motto on the Cork coat of arms ‘Statio Bene Fida Carinis’ roughly translates into ‘safe harbour for ships’. Indeed, Cork County boasts one of the largest natural harbours in the world. If you are interested to learn more about Cork’s rich and diverse heritage and history, we recommend a visit to the Cork Public Museum.

European Green Deal

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 11 febbraio 2020

After peace, the single market and the euro, the European Green Deal has the potential to become the defining mission of the European Union. Its success would strengthen the relevance and the legitimacy of the EU. It would show all Europeans, especially the youngest generation, that the EU is an essential part of the solution to the challenges of the 21st century. To make the Green Deal a European success, the EU needs a coalition, a narrative and flagships that pave the way for the hard policy decisions to come. This paper has been written by Thomas Pellerin-Carlin, Director of the Jacques Delors Energy Centre of the Jacques Delors Institute and Jean-Arnold Vinois, Adviser Energy Union at the Jacques Delors Institute.

BP Goes All-In on AWS for its European Mega Data Centers

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 8 dicembre 2019

Today, Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an company (NASDAQ: AMZN), announced that BP, a leading global energy business, is closing its European mega data centers and migrating all data and 900 key applications currently hosted there to AWS, as part of a company-wide program to accelerate the digitization of its infrastructure and operations. The two European mega data centers, the largest that BP operates globally, host data from across all BP’s businesses. Moving to AWS enables BP to use a broad and deep portfolio of cloud services, including machine learning, analytics, storage, security, databases, and compute to gain greater insights and automate processes. The data center migration expands upon BP’s existing relationship with AWS, which has helped the organization to improve operational efficiencies, eliminate upfront capital expenditures, and quickly adapt to market changes. In its global Downstream business, BP’s refineries run AVEVA Unified Supply Chain (previously Spiral Suite) software, a crucial decision-making analytics platform, on AWS. By deploying AVEVA Unified Supply Chain on AWS, a problem that with legacy solutions would have required seven hours of calculation time, can now be performed in less than four minutes. BP has also successfully migrated approximately half of its 65 business critical SAP production environments to AWS, which has improved system performance and integrity. With this success, the company now plans to accelerate the migration of additional SAP applications to AWS. In addition, BP is creating a data lake on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), for use across its businesses, and will use Amazon Kinesis, a service that enables organizations to easily collect, process, and analyze real-time, streaming data, to gain timely insights for its emissions monitoring and gas station pump operations. With this information and leveraging Amazon SageMaker, a machine learning (ML) service that provides organizations with the ability to build, train, and deploy ML models quickly, BP will be able to make predictions that will help the energy company make faster business decisions and drive efficiencies. Moving forward, BP aims to continue to advance its cloud-first enterprise data strategy to significantly improve its supply-chain operations and deliver advanced Internet of Things (IoT) solutions for increased safety, predictive maintenance, corrosion detection, logistics tracking, and intelligent assistance.BP’s cloud-first IT approach is helping it simplify processes and enhance productivity as part of its strategy to help advance the energy transition. In support of the energy transition, the companies announced in a separate release, that AWS has signed two renewable energy projects with BP that will provide over 170 megawatts (MW) of wind and solar capacity in Sweden and Spain each year over the next decade to supply energy to Amazon’s fulfillment network in Europe and Amazon Web Services data centers.

European inflation the lowest in the world, but average real salaries decrease

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 15 novembre 2019

Despite European inflation forecasted to be the lowest in the world next year at 1.7 percent, the average forecasted real salary increase across the continent is expected to be 1.1 percent, down 0.1 percent on last year’s figure. After employees in Ukraine experienced a 1.7 percent increase after inflation to their salaries in 2019, the improved inflation forecast in the country means that workers look set to receive a real salary increase of 4.1 percent – the highest in Europe next year. This follows a year of salary contraction in 2018 where real wages shrank by 0.9 percent and would see a total real salary increase of 5.9 percent in just two years. Ukraine is also the only European country to be in the top 10 for highest real salary increases in the world next year, and the only nation outside of the Asia-Pacific region.Kilfedder explained “After several tough years with salary rises lower than inflation – in 2015 they were 40.5% lower – Ukrainian employees may finally see some light at the end of the tunnel with the joint 5th highest real increases globally in 2020. The nominal increase is set to be 10.0% on average, but with inflation expected to drop dramatically to 5.9%, this will result in an average real salary of 4.1% – the highest in Europe.” (font: ECA International
