Attracting Investments in European HealthTech Leaders at the first HTID Conference in Paris

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 14 maggio 2019

The first edition of the HealthTech Investor Days (HTID) will take place in Paris on June 24th and 25th 2019. This new forum will help 100 late-stage European HealthTech companies secure the development of new medicines and therapeutic solutions. Launched by France Biotech with the support of the European health innovation ecosystem, HTID will facilitate one-on-one meetings between European health entrepreneurs, international investors and major pharmaceutical companies. The two-day event will also feature a dozen plenary meetings on global issues in health innovation.Europe is a major player in medicine of the future thanks to the excellence of its scientific research and the growing number of innovative HealthTech companies. It is home to 3,000 biotechs and 27,000 medtechs according to European sources EuropaBio and Medtech Europe.Europe’s potential in health innovation is hampered by the structural weakness in funding for the sector which requires large capital investments and long-term financing. The development of a new drug from benchside research to the market takes ten to fifteen years on average. For medical devices, the development process usually lasts three to seven years. In the past two years, investment in HealthTech companies around the world has been rising sharply. However, Europe has benefited only partially from this trend. In 2017, the global amount of funds raised in the HealthTech sector in Europe (via venture capital and IPOs) reached € 6.2 billion (source: EY). This represents less than a third of the funds raised in the United States alone during the same period (€ 19.8 billion). In 2018, the European investment deficit increased further with a total of 5.8 billion euros funds raised (down 6.5% compared to 2017). Meanwhile, 27 billion euros (+ 36.3%) were invested in HealthTech in the United States. This means that American health innovation now attracts five times more investment than European health innovation.HTID is a response to this crucial need for financing and support by the industry. The event will take place on an annual basis to help overcome this lack of investment in the European HealthTech sector.

European Public Prosecutor’s office should fight terrorism, say MEPs

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 24 marzo 2019

The Civil Liberties Committee calls on the Council to enable the European Public Prosecutor’s office to investigate and prosecute cross-border terrorism and organised crime. The European Public Prosecutor’s office (EPPO) could improve the EU’s capacity to tackle serious crime having a cross-border dimension like terrorism, say MEPs. They thus call on the Council to expand the powers of the EPPO to include the fight against organised crime and terrorism if unanimity exists among the Member States. The tasks of the EPPO, expected to be operational at the end of 2020 or beginning of 2021, currently include investigating, prosecuting and bringing to justice crimes against the EU budget; such as fraud, corruption or cross-border VAT fraud above 10 million euros.
The resolution answers to a communication from the Commission from September 2018.Civil Liberties Committee Chair and rapporteur Claude Moraes (S&D, UK) said: “Today our Committee has taken an important measure in the fight against organised crime and terrorism, by setting out that, once established and fully operational, the tasks of the European Public Prosecutor’s office can be extended to cover terrorism. This can build on the added value of the organisation, supporting coordinated investigations and better information sharing.”

Launched the First European OCP Experience Center

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 1 ottobre 2018

Circle B, Rittal and Switch Datacenters have launched the first European Open Compute Project (OCP) Experience Center. The fully-functional OCP environment is located in one of the three facilities that Switch Datacenters operates in the Amsterdam area. The OCP Experience Center is available as a demo center, but may also be used for testing new OCP Accepted™ and OCP Inspired™ data centre environments and telco solutions. Circle B is one of the first European channel partners that has acquired the status of OCP Solution Provider®. Solution Providers are a special group of companies within the OCP ecosystem. They develop, test, deliver and support ready-made systems and environments based on OCP designs. Rittal is a well-known manufacturer of infrastructure solutions for data centres. As part of their product portfolio, Rittal designs, manufactures and sells racks and cooling solutions that are based on OCP designs. Switch Datacenters is one of the largest carrier-neutral data centre operators in The Netherlands. Right now Switch Datacenters is building a new data centre in Amsterdam based on OCP principles. The three companies have determined that within the technology sector, IT managers at large enterprises and governments in the European region have yet to adopt OCP principles on a large scale. These principles form the basis on which many hyperscalers operate. By adopting OCP designs in their data centres large enterprises and governments can benefit from the same advantages as the hyperscalers: cost reductions, lower energy usage and much more flexibility. The European OCP Experience Center that Rittal, Circle B and Switch Datacenters have now launched aims to help IT managers and data center managers to fully understand the impact of OCP designs on their data centres. The center will also allow them to test specific OCP-based solutions that are relevant to their IT environments.
The European OCP Experience Center is located very close to Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport. The opening of the center coincides with the first annual OCP Regional Summit which will be held in Amsterdam on 1 and 2 October 2018 at the RAI Exhibition and Convention Centre.

Automatic stabilizers for the Euro area and the European social model/Des stabilisateurs automatiques pour la zone euro et le modèle social européen

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 23 settembre 2016

social-modelThe debate on automatic stabilizers for the Euro area is definitely on the agenda. Analytically, the case for a stabilisation capacity is compelling; politically it is an uphill battle. We therefore need a careful exploration of different scenarios and a thorough understanding of how they fit into the broader challenge of developing a European social union. This Tribune by Frank Vandenbroucke, our social affairs adviser, explores two options: a genuine European Unemployment Insurance and a model of “Reinsurance”. Both require social convergence, a challenge that is also identified by the recent Commission initiative to launch a “European Pillar of Social Rights”. However, the governance method and the flexibility with which convergence is pursued in these models differ. With regard to the problem of moral hazard, they also offer different perspectives. Politically, the reinsurance option may better reflect the idea that a European social union should be a union of welfare states, rather than a European welfare state.

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 14 gennaio 2016

commissione europeaMigration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos will join the Civil Liberties Committee on Thursday to debate the border and coast guard package presented on 15 December 2015, the progress of measures to tackle the migration and refugee crisis, including relocation (only 272 asylum seekers have been relocated so far) and work in the reception “hotspots”. MEPs may also raise the issue of the reintroduction of border controls in Sweden and Denmark and the future of Schengen, as well as the Cologne sexual attacks. The debate starts at 10.00.
The EU Commission’s proposal to turn border agency Frontex into a common European border and coast guard body that could be deployed, in urgent cases, even without the approval of the country concerned was welcomed by many members in a plenary debate with Commission First Vice-President Frans Timmermans and Commissioner Avramopoulos on 15 December. The Commission also proposed establishing a European return office within the new agency. In urgent situations, rapid return intervention teams could be deployed either at the request of a member state or by decision of the EU. “Nothing can happen without their cooperation, and our proposal is a European answer to European problem”, said Mr Avramopoulos during the plenary debate with members on 15 December.

European Parliament President Martin-schulz, Civil Liberties Committee Chair Claude Moraes and Culture Committee Chair Silvia Costa received an appeal today by European filmmakers on the current refugee crisis in Europe – “For A Thousand Lives: Be Human”.The delegation of European film directors and actors of various nationalities called on the European Union to take measures to ensure that member states respond to the refugee crisis by acting jointly, in solidarity, and with humanity, in accordance with the EU’s founding values. After receiving the filmmakers’ appeal, President Schulz said: “I welcome very warmly this initiative. The majority of Europeans favours helping refugees. With this initiative and many others by civil society, we show that we stay mobilized to find a fair solution in a spirit of solidarity and humanity”.”European filmmakers came to the Parliament today because they understand the power of images and that the European Union is also a Union of values in the midst of the refugee crisis. For this reason, they are right to speak out on refugees, as the winter sets in, to call on member states to shake off their complacency and populism, and focus on a practical, organised, compassionate action in place of inertia”, added Civil Liberties Committee Chair Claude Moraes. “Cinema, creativity and culture have a crucial role in raising citizens’ awareness and the responsibility of national and European institutions. We are delighted to have received at the European Parliament the call from directors and actors who, with their valuable work, can give a voice and eyes to the dramatic situation of refugees. We share with them the goal of a more cohesive and inclusive Europe”, concluded Culture Committee Chair Silvia Costa.
Claude Moraes and Silvia Costa held a press conference at 14.30 with French director Michel Hazanavicius (5 Oscars, 6 Césars, 7 Baftas, and 3 Golden Globes for “The Artist”), Italian actress and director Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, German cinema icon Hanna Schygulla, French director Laurent Cantet (Palme d’or for “Entre les murs”), and Polish actor Andrzej Chyra.

European Parliament debates Safe Harbour ruling at 19.30: How to protect EU citizens’ data in transatlantic transfers?

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 17 ottobre 2015

MEPs debate the impact of the recent european court justice (ECJ) ruling that the Safe Harbour agreement on data transfers to the US is not safe. They are likely to ask Justice Commissioner Věra Jourová to clarify the legal situation following the ruling and demand immediate action to ensure effective data protection for EU citizens. The debate in plenary, with the Commission and Council, starts at 19.30, after the votes.Following a complaint against Facebook by an Austrian citizen, Max Schrems, the European Court of Justice ruled on 6 October that the Commission’s “adequacy decision” was invalid since the Safe Harbour scheme does not offer a level of data protection equivalent to the level of protection in place in the EU. In particular, the Court found that the access enjoyed by the US intelligence services to the transferred data interferes with ‘the right to respect for private life and the right to protection of personal data’.After the ruling, the chair of the civil liberties committee, Claude Moraes (S&D, UK), called on the European Commission to act immediately to provide clarity and proper data protection standards for data transfers to the US. Debate on rise of anti-semitism, islamophobia and hate speech in Europe.
