The European Federalists call on the European Parliament to propose a limited but radical Treaty revision

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 28 maggio 2020

The ongoing discussion on the creation of new financial instruments to address the social and economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis, and in particular the recent joint proposals by the French and German governments for a EUR 500 billion Recovery Fund funded by the issuance of European debt calls for a radical change in the European Union’s budget.Sandro GOZI, MEP, President of the Union of European Federalists, stated today “The most urgent issue is certainly the creation of European resources so that the European Union can issued debt without asking higher contributions from Member States but establishing new financial resources at European level, in particular focusing on digital and financial giants and on polluters. This is the only way to ensure that any debt issued by the European Union can be guaranteed by and eventually repaid by the EU budget and does not have to rely on direct or indirect guarantees by Member States and their ability to repay such debt”.
To this end, however, it is essential to reform the Treaties, and in particular the decision-making on the establishment of new European sources of revenues amending only a few specific articles of the Treaties to ensure that the European Parliament and the Council by majority vote can establish Union’s own resources and at the same time eliminating the need for agreement by the national parliament of the Member States. Such a reform would establish an autonomous fiscal capacity of the European Union as indispensable contribution to the long-term sustainability of the new financial instruments currently under negotiation as well as to a qualitative and quantitative transformation of the European budget. In an open letter to MEPs today, the European Federalists call on the European Parliament to propose the required amendment to the Treaties and ask the other EU institutions to commence the related process of treaty revision. The rapid implementation of fiscal union is also the premise and the basis for the opening of the institutional work in view of the Conference on the future of Europe, that can then focus on achieving a true political union. The European Parliament has the democratic legitimacy and the institutional vocation to impose such an agenda on the Conference, and to elaborate and propose to the other European institutions and the Conference a project for a European Federal Constitution – similarly to what it did in the first legislature under the leadership of Altiero Spinelli.

Si apre la European Immunization Week

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 22 aprile 2020

European Green Deal

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 11 febbraio 2020

After peace, the single market and the euro, the European Green Deal has the potential to become the defining mission of the European Union. Its success would strengthen the relevance and the legitimacy of the EU. It would show all Europeans, especially the youngest generation, that the EU is an essential part of the solution to the challenges of the 21st century. To make the Green Deal a European success, the EU needs a coalition, a narrative and flagships that pave the way for the hard policy decisions to come. This paper has been written by Thomas Pellerin-Carlin, Director of the Jacques Delors Energy Centre of the Jacques Delors Institute and Jean-Arnold Vinois, Adviser Energy Union at the Jacques Delors Institute.

BP Goes All-In on AWS for its European Mega Data Centers

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 8 dicembre 2019

Today, Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an company (NASDAQ: AMZN), announced that BP, a leading global energy business, is closing its European mega data centers and migrating all data and 900 key applications currently hosted there to AWS, as part of a company-wide program to accelerate the digitization of its infrastructure and operations. The two European mega data centers, the largest that BP operates globally, host data from across all BP’s businesses. Moving to AWS enables BP to use a broad and deep portfolio of cloud services, including machine learning, analytics, storage, security, databases, and compute to gain greater insights and automate processes. The data center migration expands upon BP’s existing relationship with AWS, which has helped the organization to improve operational efficiencies, eliminate upfront capital expenditures, and quickly adapt to market changes. In its global Downstream business, BP’s refineries run AVEVA Unified Supply Chain (previously Spiral Suite) software, a crucial decision-making analytics platform, on AWS. By deploying AVEVA Unified Supply Chain on AWS, a problem that with legacy solutions would have required seven hours of calculation time, can now be performed in less than four minutes. BP has also successfully migrated approximately half of its 65 business critical SAP production environments to AWS, which has improved system performance and integrity. With this success, the company now plans to accelerate the migration of additional SAP applications to AWS. In addition, BP is creating a data lake on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), for use across its businesses, and will use Amazon Kinesis, a service that enables organizations to easily collect, process, and analyze real-time, streaming data, to gain timely insights for its emissions monitoring and gas station pump operations. With this information and leveraging Amazon SageMaker, a machine learning (ML) service that provides organizations with the ability to build, train, and deploy ML models quickly, BP will be able to make predictions that will help the energy company make faster business decisions and drive efficiencies. Moving forward, BP aims to continue to advance its cloud-first enterprise data strategy to significantly improve its supply-chain operations and deliver advanced Internet of Things (IoT) solutions for increased safety, predictive maintenance, corrosion detection, logistics tracking, and intelligent assistance.BP’s cloud-first IT approach is helping it simplify processes and enhance productivity as part of its strategy to help advance the energy transition. In support of the energy transition, the companies announced in a separate release, that AWS has signed two renewable energy projects with BP that will provide over 170 megawatts (MW) of wind and solar capacity in Sweden and Spain each year over the next decade to supply energy to Amazon’s fulfillment network in Europe and Amazon Web Services data centers.

European inflation the lowest in the world, but average real salaries decrease

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 15 novembre 2019

Despite European inflation forecasted to be the lowest in the world next year at 1.7 percent, the average forecasted real salary increase across the continent is expected to be 1.1 percent, down 0.1 percent on last year’s figure. After employees in Ukraine experienced a 1.7 percent increase after inflation to their salaries in 2019, the improved inflation forecast in the country means that workers look set to receive a real salary increase of 4.1 percent – the highest in Europe next year. This follows a year of salary contraction in 2018 where real wages shrank by 0.9 percent and would see a total real salary increase of 5.9 percent in just two years. Ukraine is also the only European country to be in the top 10 for highest real salary increases in the world next year, and the only nation outside of the Asia-Pacific region.Kilfedder explained “After several tough years with salary rises lower than inflation – in 2015 they were 40.5% lower – Ukrainian employees may finally see some light at the end of the tunnel with the joint 5th highest real increases globally in 2020. The nominal increase is set to be 10.0% on average, but with inflation expected to drop dramatically to 5.9%, this will result in an average real salary of 4.1% – the highest in Europe.” (font: ECA International

28th Congress of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 15 ottobre 2019

Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) announced today complete results from a Phase 3, 12-week, pivotal study (JADE MONO-1) in patients aged 12 and older with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (AD). Abrocitinib, an investigational oral Janus kinase 1 (JAK1) inhibitor, met all the co-primary and key secondary endpoints, which were related to skin clearance and itch relief compared to placebo. Safety data showed that both evaluated doses of abrocitinib (200mg and 100mg) were well tolerated and were consistent with a companion study (JADE MONO-2) from the JAK1 Atopic Dermatitis Efficacy and Safety (JADE) global development program. The results were shared as a Late-Breaking presentation at the 28th Congress of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) taking place October 9-13, 2019 in Madrid, Spain. The co-primary study endpoints in JADE MONO-1 were the proportion of patients who achieved an Investigator Global Assessment (IGA) score of clear (0) or almost clear (1) skin and two-point or greater improvement relative to baseline; and the proportion of patients who achieved at least a 75% or greater change from baseline in their Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) score. The key secondary endpoints were the proportion of patients achieving a four-point or larger reduction in itch severity measured with the pruritus numerical rating scale (NRS), and the magnitude of decrease in the Pruritus and Symptoms Assessment for Atopic Dermatitis (PSAAD), a patient-reported measurement scale developed by Pfizer. Other secondary endpoints included the proportion of patients who achieved a 90% or greater change in EASI score, and the percentage change from baseline in their SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) response at all scheduled time points.“There is a critical need for additional treatment options for patients living with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis,” said Michael Corbo, PhD, Chief Development Officer, Inflammation & Immunology, Pfizer Global Product Development. “We are pleased by these findings, which together with the recently reported positive top-line results from our second Phase 3 trial, encourage us that, if approved, abrocitinib may provide the first oral, once-daily treatment option for these patients.”

Construction of 40 m fuoriserie yacht for an European owner

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 27 luglio 2019

Avenza. The construction of 40 m MY Panam, CCN’s fifth Fuoriserie motor yacht, ordered last September by a European owner, is continuing well on schedule. Early this month, the approx. 340 gross ton superyacht – designed by Francesco Paszkowski Design, who is in charge of both exteriors and interiors, the latter in cooperation with architect Margherita Casprini – was moved inside the shed where outfitting activities are to be carried out. Following completion of the hull and the superstructure, as well as of the decks interior layout, the installation of hydraulic and electrical systems, insulation, and activities on the guest areas and crew quarters on the lower deck have now started. This slender and aggressive yacht is going to stand out for her impressive performances, ensured by the light aluminium alloy hull and by the three MTU 16V200 M96L engines – installed last month – that will push her to a maximum speed of 31 knots Activities are also ongoing for the construction of the 4 hull doors – one of which for the semi-float-in garage that will host a 17’ tender – and on the beach area, open on 3 sides and fitted witha convenient automatic ladder allowing to easily step down into the water. Works have also already been completed on system and structural elements of the bow thruster and the stabilizing fins. The straight bow endows this yacht with a sinuous and yet modern, dynamic and powerful look, further enhanced by the large irregular-shape windows that let plenty of natural light into the interior salons. The layout features a large salon on the main deck, divided from the dining area by a “green” wall. Forward, the full-beam master suite is fitted with a walk-in wardrobe and a bathroom with Hammam. Two wide electrically-controlled windows open up on the sides offering a wonderful panoramic sea view. Four guest cabins are located on the lower deck, which also hosts the professional galley. On this same deck, forward, are the captain’s cabin, 2 double cabins, the laundry, and the crew mess. The 65 sq. m flybridge features a large aft custom-made pool with counter current swimmingsystem, while a sunbathing area can be found at the bow. Delivery is scheduled for summer 2020. (font:

Why to join for the opening of the new European Parliament?

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 1 luglio 2019

Strasbourg. Tuesday 2nd of July 08:00 – 10:00: Rally in front of the European Parliament: Citizens gathering for the new European Parliament.
The European Union has been “at a critical junction” time and again since its inception. Calls for a renewed commitment to the European project have taken almost a life of their own. Back in 2014, after the Parliament had managed to elect him at the helm of the European Commission by establishing no less than a constitutional precedent, President Juncker declared his would be “the Commission of the last chance”: if it did not deliver, citizens would lose their trust in the EU. After the dismal outcome of the Brexit referendum, EU leaders convened in Bratislava to agree on a supposedly ambitious roadmap “to make a success of the EU with 27 Member States”. Three years on – Leaders’ summit after Leaders’ summit – Brexit still hasn’t happened (thankfully!) and resources, time and energy have been wasted on European Heads of State and Government unable to unite around anything more than generic commitments to the EU.That there would even be a need to reaffirm European unity is proof that the time of national leaders is far gone. We need European solutions urgently, not least to stop more far-right and illiberal forces from rising to power. The alarms bells have been ringing for years now, but these leaders are too comfortable sitting in their own echo chamber to hear them.EU national leaders have failed us. European integration by intergovernmental cooperation has the EU stuck in a status quo that could well be its downfall. But the history of the European Union is not only one of disappointing meetings of European leaders. The history of Europe is also one of citizens gathering, demonstrating and protesting; citizens calling on elected leaders for more decisive steps towards the political unity of the European people. The history of the European Union is one of citizens gathering and calling on elected leaders for more decisive steps towards political unity for the European people: in 1975 in Rome claiming for the direct elections of the European Parliament; in 1979 in Strasbourg asking for a European currency; in 1985 in Milano defending The Spinelli Treaty, in 1991 in Maastricht for European democracy, in 2000 in Nice asking for a European Convention, on 25 March 2017 in Rome calling for a relaunch of political integration.Today, simply celebrating the EU and its achievements is not enough anymore. Our continent is in dire need of common solutions underpinned by genuine European democracy. This July 1-2 in Strasbourg, at the opening plenary session of the European Parliament, we will again call on our elected representatives to choose Europe, wholeheartedly and without reservations. This July, we must take up the challenge of creating a genuine, European democracy – or risk having no democracy at all.

First 17 “European Universities” selected

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 28 giugno 2019

The European Commission has today announced the higher education institutions from all over Europe that will be part of the first “European Universities” alliances. They will enhance the quality and attractiveness of European higher education and boost cooperation between institutions, their students and staff. Out of 54 applications received, 17 European Universities involving 114 higher education institutions from 24 Member States were selected (see Annex), based on an evaluation carried out by 26 independent external experts, including rectors, professors and researchers, appointed by the Commission. European Universities are transnational alliances of higher education institutions from across the EU that share a long-term strategy and promote European values and identity. The initiative is designed to significantly strengthen mobility of students and staff, and foster the quality, inclusiveness and competitiveness of European higher education. Tibor Navracsics, Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, said: “I am pleased to see the ambition of the first 17 European Universities, which will act as role models for others across the EU. They will enable the next generations of students to experience Europe by studying in different countries. I am convinced that this initiative, a key building block of the European Education Area, will be a real game changer for higher education in Europe, boosting excellence and inclusion. The selection of European Universities includes a broad range of higher education institutions from across the EU, from universities of applied sciences, technical universities and universities of fine arts to comprehensive and research-intensive universities.European Universities will become inter-university campuses around which students, doctoral candidates, staff and researchers can move seamlessly. They will pool their expertise, platforms and resources to deliver joint curricula or modules covering various disciplines. These curricula will be very flexible and will allow students to personalise their education, choosing what, where and when to study and get a European degree. European Universities will also contribute to the sustainable economic development of the regions where they are located, as their students will work closely with companies, municipal authorities, academics and researchers to find solutions to the challenges their regions are facing. In total, a budget of up to €85 million is available for the first 17 “European Universities”. Each alliance will receive up to €5 million in the coming three years to start implementing their plans and pave the way for other higher education institutions across the EU to follow. Their progress will be closely monitored.

Attracting Investments in European HealthTech Leaders at the first HTID Conference in Paris

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 14 maggio 2019

The first edition of the HealthTech Investor Days (HTID) will take place in Paris on June 24th and 25th 2019. This new forum will help 100 late-stage European HealthTech companies secure the development of new medicines and therapeutic solutions. Launched by France Biotech with the support of the European health innovation ecosystem, HTID will facilitate one-on-one meetings between European health entrepreneurs, international investors and major pharmaceutical companies. The two-day event will also feature a dozen plenary meetings on global issues in health innovation.Europe is a major player in medicine of the future thanks to the excellence of its scientific research and the growing number of innovative HealthTech companies. It is home to 3,000 biotechs and 27,000 medtechs according to European sources EuropaBio and Medtech Europe.Europe’s potential in health innovation is hampered by the structural weakness in funding for the sector which requires large capital investments and long-term financing. The development of a new drug from benchside research to the market takes ten to fifteen years on average. For medical devices, the development process usually lasts three to seven years. In the past two years, investment in HealthTech companies around the world has been rising sharply. However, Europe has benefited only partially from this trend. In 2017, the global amount of funds raised in the HealthTech sector in Europe (via venture capital and IPOs) reached € 6.2 billion (source: EY). This represents less than a third of the funds raised in the United States alone during the same period (€ 19.8 billion). In 2018, the European investment deficit increased further with a total of 5.8 billion euros funds raised (down 6.5% compared to 2017). Meanwhile, 27 billion euros (+ 36.3%) were invested in HealthTech in the United States. This means that American health innovation now attracts five times more investment than European health innovation.HTID is a response to this crucial need for financing and support by the industry. The event will take place on an annual basis to help overcome this lack of investment in the European HealthTech sector.

2018, a year of many achievements for the European Fisheries Control Agency

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 30 aprile 2019

EFCA performed 26,922 coordinated inspections, a 28% increase compared to 2017. 714 suspected infringements, 15% less than in 2017, were detected, mostly concerning non-compliance with recording obligations and technical measures. At international level, EFCA has assisted the European Union in cooperating with developing countries and international fisheries organisations to help combat illegal fishing. In 2018, the five-year EU funded development project PESCAO kicked off, aiming to improve the fight against Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing in Western Africa, contributing to sustainable fisheries management and the reduction of food insecurity in the region. As part of this project, EFCA provides technical assistance to thirteen countries in the area.
Moreover, EFCA assisted the Commission in its cooperation with the Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (NAFO, NEAFC, ICCAT and GFCM), to strengthen the operational coordination and compliance. As stated in the MEDFISH4EVER Declaration, EFCA has continued to cooperate with third countries in the Mediterranean to promote an effective level playing field in the area.Providing trainings is an important part of EFCA’s work with 1,496 inspectors and experts from EU and third countries participating in training events and e-learning in 2018.To support the national authorities in their coast guard functions, EFCA hosted the first Annual European Coast Guard event in La Toja, Spain. The event brought together experts from other European agencies, such as EMSA and Frontex to identify ways to better cooperate and support Member States performing coast guard functions.
