77% of Europeans insist EU funds be linked to respect for Rule of Law

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 24 ottobre 2020

A majority of EU citizens supports a larger EU budget to overcome the pandemic. Public health is the priority, followed by economic recovery and climate change.In a new survey commissioned by the European Parliament and conducted at the beginning of October 2020, nearly eight out of ten participants (77%) across the EU support the concept that the EU should only provide funds to Member States if the national government implements the rule of law and democratic principles. At least seven in ten participants agree with this statement in 26 EU Member States. 54% of Europeans believe the EU should have greater financial means to be able to overcome the consequences of the Coronavirus pandemic. In 20 EU Member States, a majority of the participants agrees with this claim; in 14 EU Member States, an absolute majority of participants supports a larger EU budget.Asked about which policy fields this enlarged EU budget should be spent on, more than half of participants (54%) say that public health should be a priority, followed by economic recovery and new opportunities for businesses (42%), climate change and environmental protection (37%) and employment and social affairs (35%). At EU level, climate change and the environment has replaced employment in the top three spending priorities compared to the last survey conducted in June 2020.Public health is the top spending priority for respondents in 18 countries. Estonia, Latvia and Czechia put the economic recovery on top, whilst in Austria, Denmark and Germany citizens favoured most the fight against climate change. In Croatia, Slovakia and Finland, participants chose employment and social affairs as their top spending priority. Taking the necessary decisions on the Recovery Package and the MFF as soon as possible is clearly vital, as demonstrated by the worrying personal financial situation of European citizens since the beginning of the pandemic. A broad majority of citizens fear the pandemic will a direct impact on their personal financial situation –or have already suffered it: 39% of participants say that the COVID-19 crisis has already impacted their personal income, while a further 27% expect such an impact in the future. Only 27% expect the COVID-19 situation not to have an impact on their personal income. In 20 countries, most participants say that the current crisis has already impacted their personal income. Two-thirds of participants (66%) agree that the EU should have more competences to deal with crises such as the Coronavirus pandemic. Only a quarter (25%) disagrees with this statement. These findings are consistent with the results from both previous surveys conducted by the European Parliament in April and June 2020 respectively.

Dublin enters the top ten most liveable cities for Europeans

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 15 febbraio 2019

Dublin has re-entered the top ten most liveable cities, becoming one of the most attractive cities in Europe for European expats. Cities around the world are evaluated annually by ECA International (ECA) on a variety of liveability factors including availability of health services; housing and utilities; isolation; access to a social network and leisure facilities; infrastructure; climate; personal safety; political tensions and air quality.
ECA’s annual Location Ratings survey has followed Dublin’s steady rise in recent years as liveability in Ireland’s capital started to become one of the most desirable in Europe, and indeed, the world. This year Dublin re-entered the top ten in joint ninth place with Gothenburg and Luxembourg, offering the most superior living conditions for European expats. Dublin also came in at 23rd place for Asians expats, beating many Asian locations including Hong Kong, which is 41st.“Dublin has seen a return to the top ten after dropping out in 2017 due to a shortage of suitable housing for expatriates in the city. However, our research reveals a general opinion from the expat community that they feel safer in Dublin after dark, which has improved the city’s personal security score this year,” said Neil Ashman, Senior Location Ratings Analyst at ECA International, global mobility experts.“Dublin has a strong international expat community, which is why it also scores well for Asian expats versus cities such as Hong Kong that suffered disruption and considerable damage caused by Typhoon Mangkhut in September,” explained Ashman.ECA’s Location Ratings system objectively evaluates a host of factors to form an assessment of the overall quality of living in over 480 locations worldwide. The system helps companies establish appropriate allowances to compensate employees for the adjustment required when going on international assignment. The impact of some of the factors assessed will vary according to the home location of the assignee.Northern European cities continue to dominate the top of the rankings. Alongside Dublin, cities in northern European and Scandinavian nations once again dominate the top of the liveability rankings. Copenhagen in Denmark and Bern in Switzerland offer the best liveability standards for European expats, scoring at the top of ECA’s ranking for over seven years. Alongside Dublin, cities in northern European and Scandinavian nations once again dominate the top ten most liveable locations for European expats. The Netherlands and Switzerland each have three cities within the top ten.

French and Europeans: Stronger Together!/Français et Européens: plus forts ensemble!

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 7 maggio 2017

lepenmacronThe secound round of the French presidential election will be held on the 7 May 2017 and will be played out in a duel between Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron. We are hoping the victory of M. Macron, in order to reaffirm France’s attachment and influence in Europe, and to continue and deepen the challenging dialogue on which European integration has always been founded. This tribune, signed by Enrico Letta, President of Jacques Delors Institute, Pascal Lamy, President emeritus of the Jacques Delors Institute, and Yves Bertoncini, Director of the Jacques Delors Institute, provide three observations:
a decisive national election will have major consequences for Europe;
the French are note Europhobic and can put an end to the Brexit-Trump sequence;
we have to look to the outside world in order to become even more European.
cette élection nationale aura des conséquences majeures pour l’Europe;
les Français ne sont pas europhobes et peuvent interrompre la séquence “Brexit-Trump”; nous devons regarder le monde pour être davantage Européens. (photo: le pen-macron)

Clean energy for all Europeans: time to deliver!

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 5 marzo 2017

energyParis. Two years ago, on February 25th 2015, the European Commission embraced the comprehensive approach to the Energy Union advocated by the Jacques Delors Institute. It has now delivered the key proposals that will shape Europe’s energy future. Negotiation starts and we now must help decision-makers achieving an “Energy Union Deal” serving the interests of European citizens.
One way forward is for the European Commission to act, as a regulator and a financer, but also as a dynamic enabler working with forward-looking companies, NGOs and elected officials to show the real-life benefits of delivering clean energy for all. (photo: energy)

An open letter to people fleeing war, persecution and poverty

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 10 settembre 2015

migrantsAs Europeans, WeApologise on behalf of our national and European leaders for their inexcusable lack of coordinated humanitarian aid to the situation you and thousands of others are in while crossing our borders to escape war, persecution and poverty.We understand that making this journey was not an easy decision for you and may have involved putting the lives of your loved ones at risk, or worse. We will continue to urge our decision-makers to provide safe and regular channels to the EU, so that your wellbeing does not rest in the hands of people smugglers.Civil society organisations and thousands of people across the EU are taking a stand despite many governments’ inaction by opening their homes, sharing their food and donating their clothes. We will keep pressuring our politicians to fulfil their humanitarian obligation to ensure the provision of such services rather than leaving it up to individuals or organisations to provide them without support.The decision you made that led you here to Europe required a lot of courage. We implore our leaders to demonstrate the same courage by coming together to find a pan-European response that respects each individual’s human rights regardless of their status
While several of our leaders seem to have forgotten the EU’s core values of solidarity and human rights, we have not. The EU has the capacity to welcome you with open arms, and the unwillingness to do so is an embarrassment to us. We acknowledge your right to seek refuge in safer regions and to be treated with dignity. We also recognise the contribution that you can make and we will fight to give you this opportunity. allergenBrussels, Belgium – Last week the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) conducted three days of diagnostic tests for allergies in the European Parliament. In total 350 people took the opportunity to be examined for sensitivity to the most common allergens and to be given an expert advice, and 47% of them tested positively.Among the 150 million Europeans affected by allergic diseases, approximately one fifth are affected by severe, debilitating diseases, but these are neglected as a public health concern. Around 50% of allergies sufferers are undiagnosed, and others often have to wait a considerable time before a diagnosis becomes available.
