Xylem signs Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Ethiopia to explore helping country solve water challenges

Xylem Inc. (NYSE: XYL), a leading global water technology provider, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy (MoWIE) for future cooperation to help advance water security in Ethiopia. The MoU was signed at an event in Ethiopia attended by Ethiopia’s Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy His Excellency Dr. Eng. Seleshi Bekele; State Minister Water Supply and Sanitation Dr. Negash Wagesho; Xylem President and CEO Patrick Decker; and a representative of the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia. H.E. Dr. Eng Seleshi Bekele noted that the present MoU signed between Xylem and MoWIE creates an enabling platform to improve water supply and sanitation service delivery and ensure scheme sustainability. He also stressed that the Ethiopian water supply and sanitation sector benefit from the broad technical and technological solutions Xylem has been providing.Xylem President and CEO Patrick Decker spoke about how honored the company is to have the opportunity to begin exploring solutions for the region, notably non-revenue water, knowledge sharing, and creating more water and energy efficiencies to maximize resources and lessen impact on the environment.“This exploratory partnership is a chance to strengthen our working relationship with the Ministry and build on positive conversations around water systems optimization, energy, water and sewage coverage, and to create a foundation that can help advance Ethiopia’s water sector in the future,” said Mr. Decker.“As a global leader in water technology, Xylem is committed to helping communities around the world harness the power of technology to protect and optimize water and wastewater systems. LEO Pharma A/S and FibroTx LLC Enter Partnership to Explore Non-Invasive Skin Test Technology

LEO Pharma, a global healthcare company dedicated to helping people achieve healthy skin, and FibroTx, an Estonia-based bio-tech company providing innovative tools for personalised dermatology and skin care, today announced that they have entered a partnership to explore non-invasive skin test technology.The partnership marks the first step in an alliance to measure soluble biomarkers from the skin surface of atopic dermatitis patients using a non-invasive skin test technology developed by FibroTx in Estonia. The method can be used to assess disease severity, monitor treatment effects and can potentially predict treatment outcomes. The alliance strengthens the endeavors of both companies to improve the lives of atopic dermatitis patients by developing precision medicine tools with minimal inconvenience to patients.“We are excited to work with FibroTx with their novel technology that will help us measure therapeutic responses to our treatment. TAP is more convenient, more sensitive and more reproducible than conventional protein-based technologies. FibroTx SELF is a non-invasive lateral flow-test based platform technology in which samples swabbed from skin are analyzed in so-called rapid tests that are read-out by a mobile phone or lateral flow test reader, depending on application.

The SIE National Student BPC

The school gives students studying in all twenty of Scotland’s Higher Education Institutions access to knowledge and resources to transform their business idea into reality. Open to all students, the competition develops their practical entrepreneurial skills by giving them access to experienced entrepreneurs and business professionals. SIE help them to explore how to start and grow a new business through a range of practical workshops and a residential training academy, focused around all aspects of sales and marketing, finance, HR and pitching and growing your business. This year’s competition saw a record number of 530 student teams battling it out for a share of the GBP50, 000 prize fund and a chance to be crowned SIE BPC Winner 2007. Competition sponsors include top legal experts and patent attorneys; graduate recruiters, advertising and marketing specialists. SIE Project Executive, Ross MacKay said: “This year we’ve been privileged to work with incredibly talented students and some extremely dedicated members of the business community. By partnering with these leading sponsors our students gained access to top calibre business advice and support, which has accelerated them on their route to success.” Mark Darley, representative for platinum sponsors, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, said: “We look for a number of qualities in our graduates; top of the list is a real thirst for business. The Scottish Institute for Enterprise (www.sie.ac.uk) wascreated in 1999 with the aim of boosting the commercialization potential of university science and technology research. Ron Arad

aradLondon from 7/4/09 to 9/5/09 Taylor Gallery Dering Street. Timothy Taylor Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of new works by Ron Arad. This marks the first show at the gallery since it announced sole representation of Arad in the UK. Grouped around a freestanding star of interconnected walls designed by Arad, the show will unveil a number of highly sophisticated experimental pieces, many only recently produced and on display for the first time. Arad’s re-invention of the chair is constantly evolving; the Thumbprint, composed of multiple bronze rods, and the Rod Gomli, of stainless steel rods, are jewel-like objects that shimmer as the light shifts, revealing subtle gradations of colour. The first in editions of six, they are imposing yet intricate pieces – their seductive contours inviting the viewer to touch, explore and climb into the curved centres they create. In addition to the Thumbprint, there will be a series of three unique Bodyguards. Crafted from inflated aerospace aluminium, cut individually, highly polished and tinted, they will be shown alongside four new and unique Drunk Bodyguards. These remarkable sculptural pieces sway woozily on a single tangent point, balancing, poised in mid-air, reacting to the lightest of touches. They appear to be weightless. Paradoxically this weightlessness is the result of extreme heaviness. Exploring similar paradoxes, the woven pieces, Gomlis and Johnny Wasps, are deceptively strong yet light in structure. Composite techno-threads are woven around sacrificial moulds. Colourful, tribal and dotted with latticed holes, they hold the body as if in an airy web. Arad’s most recent and critically acclaimed solo show, No Discipline, is currently on view at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, until 16 March 2009, displaying over 100 pieces in a specially created scenography. Arad will open a re-defined version of this exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, from 2 August – 19 October 2009 before reconfiguring it in turn for the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam in the autumn of 2010. Arad was born in Tel Aviv in 1951 and studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem and at the Architectural Association in London. He was appointed Professor of Product Design at the Royal College of Art in London in 1997. Before and After Now, a major retrospective of Arad’s work was exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2000, a year after the publication of a monograph by Deyan Sudjic, now Director of London’s Design Museum. In 2004 Ron Arad Talks To Matthew Collings was published by Phaidon. Arad’s Architectural projects include the Maserati headquarters showroom in Modena, Italy, and Y’s fashion store for Yohji Yamamoto in Tokyo, Japan, which opened in 2003. In 2004 he began work on the design of Magis’s headquarters in Treviso, Italy and the Holon Design Museum in Israel, now completed.
