Aging LGBT Population Facing Unique Challenges

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 5 gennaio 2019

The first Miami Valley LGBT Horizons of Aging Summit focusing on issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults will be held February 11 and 12, 2019, at the Sinclair College Conference Center in Dayton. It is being presented by the United Church Homes’ Ruth Frost Parker Center for Abundant Aging, Rainbow Elder Care of Greater Dayton and Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County. The event will be headlined by a screening of the film Gen Silent which chronicles the challenges of older LGBT individuals seeking support as they age. Nationally renowned speakers include producer Stu Maddux of the film Gen Silent, Dr. Nii-Quartelai Quartey, national leader of LGBT Initiatives for AARP, and Dr. Jason Flatt, University of California San Francisco, who recently released the first major research on dementia in the LGBT community.Breakout session topics will include: culturally competent LGBT care/service, affordable senior living, transgender aging, Social Security and hospice care for LGBT individuals.Public Health’s LGBTQ Health Initiatives Project Manager, Jerry Mallicoat said, “For the first time in America we have a growing population of older LGBT people who have lived quite openly when they were younger. As they age and need support services, these individuals often face bias, stigma, and discrimination from healthcare and other service providers that might not care for older LGBT adults in a way that is both culturally competent and sensitive to their needs. Sometimes, older LGBT people feel the need to go back in the closet to get necessary services, and we need to avoid that happening so they can live affirmed lives as they age.” “This event is really about building community,” said Rev. Beth Long-Higgins, executive director of United Church Homes’ Ruth Frost Parker Center for Abundant Aging. “United Church Homes wants to open people’s eyes and hearts to the challenges older LGBT adults face, and drive collaborative solutions that nurture their personal and spiritual needs as they age.”

Harare – More than one million people in Zimbabwe will be unable to meet their food needs during the lean season between now and March, in spite of improvements in the food security situation in recent years.“Most of the vulnerable households are located in the southern and western regions which are very susceptible to dry spells,” says Country Director of the UN World Food Programme (WFP), Felix Bamezon. “Agricultural production in these regions was once again poor this season. The situation is made worse by the economic downturn and we’re already seeing families resorting to skipping meals and reducing portion sizes.”According to the recently released Zimbabwe Vulnerability Rural Livelihoods Assessment (ZIMVAC), 12 percent of the rural population will not have the means to feed themselves adequately during the lean season.  Most at risk are low-income families hit by failed harvests, and households with orphans and vulnerable children. Although food is generally available in many rural areas, it is too expensive for those with limited resources.
In response to this situation, WFP and its partners have started providing seasonal targeted assistance.  This initiative is designed to bridge the lean season gap through in-kind food distributions, cash transfers and food vouchers. WFP has secured funds to launch the response, but additional funds are needed to keep it going.“Longer-term measures such as greater investment in agriculture and the livestock sector are essential. But for now, those who are most vulnerable need urgent assistance,” added Bamezon.WFP’s Health & Nutrition Programme which caters for malnourished, chronically-ill people on anti-retroviral treatment, along with their households, is also facing a funding shortfall.  The total shortfall for WFP’s food assistance programmes in Zimbabwe stands at US 42 million.
WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. Each year, on average, WFP feeds more than 90 million people in more than 70 countries.WFP now provides RSS feeds to help journalists keep up with the latest press releases, videos and photos as they are published on WFP.org. The CPCE President congratulates Barroso

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 17 settembre 2009

Wipf: the CPCE churches continue to support the shaping of a Europe which is conscious of its responsibilities. In his letter of congratulation, the President of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE), Pastor Thomas Wipf, values the efforts of the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, who was re-elected today, towards dialogue with the churches and religious communities.  “In your political guidelines you speak of a crisis of values which makes it necessary to reflect on the society in which we want to live. Specifically you call for a shaping of the markets so that they are conscious of their responsibility,” he remarks. “These are particularly important topics for the churches. In recent years they have been the subject of regular dialogue between the churches and the European Commission. Here the churches continue to support the shaping of a Europe which is conscious of its responsibilities.” Wipf also hopes that Barroso will be successful, with the composition of the new Commission, “in also gaining the support of those political groups which hitherto have been hesitant in their support. Europe needs a broad common basis if it is to master the tasks facing it.”
