South Sudan and IFAD to boost productivity, food security and resilience of small-scale farmers faced with climate change

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 26 giugno 2021

A new US$19.9 million project will bring much needed help to 38,800 rural households facing the impacts of poverty, food insecurity and climate change. The South Sudan Livelihoods Resilience Project (SSLRP) will empower rural people to boost productivity, food security and nutrition, and resilience. At a time when the COVID-19 crisis and climate change could further push the 85 per cent of South Sudanese who live in rural areas into deeper poverty, SSLRP will target the most vulnerable, food insecure and small-scale producers, engaged in fishing, cropping and livestock production. The financing agreement was signed virtually by Gilbert F. Houngbo, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and Athian Ding Athian, Minister for Finance and Planning of the Republic of South Sudan. In South Sudan, poverty is higher in rural areas, with 80 per cent of the population living below the poverty line and depend on agriculture for their livelihood. Therefore agriculture is key to defeating poverty and hunger. However, South Sudan, a resource-rich country and the youngest nation in Africa, remains the third most fragile in the world. In South Sudan, farmers continue to bear the brunt of climate change, and the project will address their need for access to drought tolerant and early maturing seeds, drought tolerant agroforestry fodder species, water conservation and management, afforestation, mangroves rehabilitation and conservation, solar and other renewable energy sources. SSLRP will also rehabilitate and construct water infrastructure, rural roads to give access to markets, and processing and storage facilities. To build and strengthen the capacity of the beneficiaries and the government during the implementation phases, SSLRP will partner with the African Development Bank (AfDB), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Bank. SSLRP will operate in three states and five counties – Eastern Equatoria (Magwi and Torit), Central Equatoria (Kajo Keji and Terekeka) and Jonglei (Bor) and will therefore contribute towards livelihoods recovery and rebuild farming systems. It is also in alignment with the ambitious agenda of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity. .To implement SSLRP, IFAD is providing a US$1.9 million loan, $7.9 million grant and $4.0 million IFAD climate finance. In addition, the Government of South Sudan is providing US$1.6 million, with a further US$5.6 million from the African Development Bank as parallel co-financing and US$0.8 million from the beneficiaries themselves. The Government of the Netherlands will provide US$8.0 million grant as additional co-financing for SSLRP to support rural feeder roads for agriculture production and access to markets.Since 2011, IFAD has financed 2 rural development programmes and projects in the Republic of South Sudan for a total cost of US$ 43.8 million, with an IFAD investment of US$ 23.3million,directly benefiting nearly 77,000 rural households.

The True Cost of Food

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 7 marzo 2021

Parliament objects to legislation on food products that might be harmful to kids

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 12 ottobre 2020

Parliament calls on the Commission to apply the precautionary principle and to remove E171 from the EU list of permitted food additives that are currently used mainly to colour confectionery, bakery and pastry products as well as chewing gum, candies, chocolates, and ice cream. As these products are very popular with children, MEPs are particularly concerned about them being potentially very exposed to the additive. They underline that France banned sales of food products containing titanium dioxide as of 1 January 2020 and that 85 000 citizens across Europe have signed a petition to support the French ban.The second objection concerning the Commission’s proposal to amend the rules setting maximum levels of acrylamide in certain foodstuffs for infants and young children was also approved with 469 votes to 137 and 90 abstentions. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) previously confirmed that acrylamide, which is a processing contaminant that occurs naturally when some foods are heated, potentially increases the risk of developing cancer in all age groups. In the resolution, MEPs request that the Commission lower the proposed maximum level allowed for two food products often given to infants and young children, as they are the most exposed, based on their body weight. They also underline that biscuits and rusks that are not specifically produced for infants and young children, but are often given to or even marketed to them, should face the same, more stringent demands. As Parliament has adopted these two objections, the Commission cannot approve the proposed actions and is now obliged to amend or withdraw them.

Towards a sustainable EU food system

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 31 maggio 2020

The European Commission has adopted a Farm to Fork Strategy for a fair, healthy and environmentally friendly food system and a Biodiversity Strategy to bring nature back into our lives. The strategies are mutually reinforcing, bringing together nature, fishers, farmers, business and consumers to jointly work towards a competitively sustainable future in line with the European Green Deal.
Under the Farm to Fork initiative, forthcoming strategic guidelines for the sustainable development of EU aquaculture will provide direction to increase the sector’s sustainability and competitiveness. They should also guide the sector towards a 50% reduction of antimicrobials use as well as the increase in organic aquaculture production. The Commission also plans a separate strategy for the development of algae production and use in the EU. Moreover, the strategy reiterates the need for full implementation of the common fisheries policy, stressing in particular the efforts still to be undertaken in the Mediterranean. A number of measures, including financial instruments, will be available to support European fishers and aquaculture producers in driving the necessary transition. All initiatives announced in the Farm to Fork Strategy will be subject to further discussion and consultation with the stakeholders. The Biodiversity Strategy aims to strengthen the protection of marine ecosystems and to restore them to achieve “good environmental status,” through the expansion of protected areas and the establishment of strictly protected areas for habitats and fish stocks recovery. The strategy stresses the need for an ecosystem-based approach to the management of human activities at sea. This means addressing the overexploitation of fishing stocks to or under Maximum Sustainable Yield levels (i.e. a level that will allow a healthy future for the fish stock’s biomass); eliminating bycatch, or at least reducing it to non-dangerous levels, in order to protect sea mammals, turtles and birds, especially those that are threatened with extinction or in bad status; and tackling practices that damage the seabed.

Food aid and basic assistance for people in need: EP adopts special measures

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 20 aprile 2020

The COVID-19 crisis is hitting the homeless and people living in poverty hardest. It is therefore crucial for MEPs that food aid and other operations supported by the EU’s Fund for the Most Deprived (FEAD) continues to reach those who need it. Specific measures need to be taken urgently to protect the most vulnerable from falling victim to this virus and to ensure that food aid and basic material assistance still reaches them, while respecting social distancing and personal protection requirements.
In light of this emergency, the Employment and Social Affairs Committee (EMPL) quickly reacted by requesting that special measures be adopted through urgent procedure to guarantee the continued functioning of FEAD, which provides around 13 million people in the EU per year with food aid and basic material assistance. The European Parliament on Friday approved the changes to FEAD proposed by the Commission, which offer the option to finance the provision of protective equipment, temporary 100% co-financing from the EU budget for the accounting year 2020-2021 and lighter reporting and audit measures during the COVID-19-pandemic.MEPs also adopted a new provision that was added upon EMPL’s initiative and negotiated with the Council. It stipulates that food aid and basic material assistance can be delivered through vouchers in any form (not only electronic, as proposed by the Commission), to ensure the safety of everyone involved in the operations and to reach the most vulnerable and excluded, in particular homeless people.Lucia Ďuriš Nicholsonová, Chair of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, commented after the vote:
“Our work was focused on the urgent need to protect those who are homeless and the most vulnerable citizens, for whom access to food aid and other assistance is of even greater importance during this coronavirus crisis. With the support of all political groups, the Employment and Social Affairs Committee proposed two additional modifications to the Commission proposal, accepted by the Council. We have added paper vouchers, to complement electronic ones, to ensure that FEAD aid is as inclusive as possible and can effectively reach the most deprived without interruption. The measures adopted today will make a real difference on the ground for the thousands of people who live in very precarious situations throughout the EU and who face extreme poverty.I wish to warmly thank and congratulate the political groups, the Council and the Commission for the excellent cooperation on these measures under severe time constraints.”The amended proposal was adopted with 686 votes in favour, 7 against and 3 abstentions. The Council has to formally approve Parliament’s position. The adopted measures will enter into force once published in the Official Journal of the European Union in the coming days.

Friend of the Sea and Friend of the Earth Launches Petition to Ban China’s Wildlife Food Markets

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 5 febbraio 2020

Friend of the Earth and Friend of the Sea, the preeminent worldwide food certifications have launched a petition asking the Chinese government to permanently close markets that sell wildlife for food. The petition is a response both to the recent outbreak of the deadly Coronavirus, which has been traced to China’s wildlife markets, and the over all environmental damage these markets are causing. China has announced a temporary, immediate ban on wild animal trading, but Friend of the Earth and Friend of the Sea would like to see the ban become permanent.“We applaud China’s decision to place a short-term ban wildlife trading, but the ban should be forever,” said Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Earth. “The ban should include not only wet markets, but supermarkets restaurants and e-commerce platforms. Wild animals belong in nature.” The NGO plans to send all the signatures to the Chinese government with the suggestion that they become the world’s new wildlife conservation leader.
As of January 30, 2020, more than 8124 cases of the Wuhan Coranavirus have been confirmed in China, causing more than 171 deaths. The virus is becoming a worldwide threat as dozens of confirmed cases arise in 14 places outside of mainland China, including at least five in the US, according to CNN. The Coronavirus is a zoonotic disease that can be transmitted from animals to human. The outbreak comes probably from a snake and has been traced to a market in Wuhan known for selling wild animals for consumptions including dogs, turtles, bats, snakes, giant salamander, crocodiles, hedgehogs and marmots.China is the world’s largest market for wildlife products, which is estimated to be a $20 billion global enterprise—fourth insize only after the illegal drug trade, human smuggling and illegal weapons trafficking. Bray added, “Wildlife trafficking undermines human security in resource-dependent local communities, severely harms the way of life of indigenous people and causes substantial economic losses.”If these wildlife markets persist, we will continue to face heightened risks from emerging new lethal viruses and pandemic spread.

Spring in the Great Smoky Mountains is about to get a little brighter thanks to Dollywood’s inaugural Flower & Food Festival, a vibrant new event that adds another touch of dazzling color to the natural beauty that already surrounds the award-winning theme park.
Coinciding with the park’s 35th anniversary, the first new festival experience at Dollywood since 2006 immerses park guests in the splendor of spring flowers through creative and aromatic displays as well as the freshest food flavors of the spring with delicious and mouth-watering Smoky Mountain cuisine selections. The five-week festival is slated for May 8-June 14.Dollywood’s Dreamer-In-Chief Dolly Parton loved springtime in the Smoky Mountains as a child and continues to draw inspiration from the beauty of what she calls “God’s Coloring Book.” With nearly half-a-million plants and flowers throughout the park, it will be easy for guests to feel as if they are walking through those pages.

Once in the park, the Showstreet area of Dollywood becomes a colorful shower of flowers – literally! Guests quickly find themselves under an “Umbrella Sky” with hundreds of multi-colored umbrellas dancing above their heads. “This gives all new meaning to one of my favorite sayings – ‘If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain,’” Parton said. “With these umbrellas, it’s sure to be a sunshine kind of day no matter what!”Flit and Flutter, the colorful characters from Wildwood Grove, venture throughout the park for special meet and greet experiences and photo opportunities during this new event. Food Made in Italy negli Stati Uniti

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 4 maggio 2018

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 18 gennaio 2018
