Opera’s Greatest Hits New Year’s Eve 2014 co-presented by Roy Thomson Hall and Attila Glatz Concert Productions. This year’s edition is featuring Opera Canada Symphony Opera Canada Chorus; lanzillotta francesco conductor (Italy); Natalia Ushakova, soprano (Russia); Viktoria Vizin, mezzo soprano (Hungary); Andreas Schager, tenor (Germany); Brett Polegato, baritone (Canada).
Celebrate a triumphant New Year’s Eve with Opera’s Greatest Hits. A “must see” for music-lovers, this concert features beloved arias from world-famous operas including La traviata, Rigoletto and Aida, as well as works by Puccini, Rossini, Offenbach and more. Conducted this year by one of Italy’s most promising young conductors, Francesco Lanzillotta. Live stories of romance, adventure and comedy, all before 10 p.m., when you will emerge from Roy Thomson Hall invigorated with excitement and anticipation and ready to welcome in the New Year with friends and family. Francesco Lanzillotta Conductor (Italy) One of the most promising young Italian conductors, Francesco Lanzillotta was born in Rome and studied conducting, composition, and piano at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia. Further studies took him to New York and Madrid. Maestro Lanzillotta has performed as guest director in many of Italy’s spectacular venues, with ensembles including the National Orchestra of the RAI Turin, the Swiss Italian Orchestra, Filarmonica Toscanini of Parma, and the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra. As principal guest conductor of the Varna Opera Theater in Bulgaria, he has directed productions including Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci, Marriage of Figaro, Carmen, and La Bohème. After a series of concerts in February 2014 with the Orchestra Filarmonica Toscanini, Maestro Lanzillotta was appointed principal conductor for the next three years. During the fall of 2014, he directed Don Checco at Teatro San Carlo in Naples. He will take the podium for a new work by Battistelli, entitled Toto and the Doctor of the Insane with the Opéra de Nancy. Further plans include returning to the Swiss Italian Orchestra, the Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano, and the National Orchestra of the RAI Turin, as well as touring Germany, and conducting the Verdi Orchestra of Milan at Expo 2015.
