Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 30 luglio 2021

Friend of the Sea, the global certification standard for products and services that respect and protect the marine environment, has recognized Nagua Swiss Sagl for its line of ecological cleaning products that spare the ocean from the spilling of harmful chemicals. Accordingly, Nagua can now display the Friend of the Sea label on its nautical products.Nagua is a Swiss-based company that created an innovative line of eco-friendly cleaning products specially designed for boats. The idea was born out of the concern about the impact of chemicals spilled into the sea, particularly those present in products to clean different kinds of boats.Besides plastic, chemicals are the other significant contributor to sea pollution. From an invisible kind, but equally harmful. The residues of products used for cleaning boats and personal care while seafaring can end up in the sea, damaging the marine ecosystem. For this reason, Friend of the Sea developed the Sustainable Cleaning Standard to provide guidelines that promote chemical safety and reduce environmental impact.Nagua’s products are made from natural ingredients to give an ecological alternative to the usual chemical or petroleum-based products. The company’s nautical line, which includes universal degreasers, laundry detergent, floor and glass cleaners, as well as personal care items such as solid cosmetics and sunscreens, are made with over 95% of natural ingredients. The impact on the marine ecosystem is consequently minimal and sustainable.Additionally, Nagua’s products are not tested on animals and do not contain synthetic dyes or parabens. Packaging is optimized to reduce material waste and is made from recycled and recyclable plastic.

Friend of the Earth Petition Contributes to China’s Decision to Ban Trade and Consumption in Wild Animals

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 1 marzo 2020

A petition launched by Friend of the Earth was an influential factor in the February 24 decision by the government of China to enact a permanent ban on the trade and consumption of wild animals. The ban is a response to the Coronavirus outbreak, which is thought to have originated from contact between humans and species, possibly pangolins, sold in China’s wild animals markets. Friend of the Earth is the preeminent worldwide certification of products from sustainable agriculture and farming, also carrying out conservation projects and campaigns.“We applaud this decision,” said Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Earth. “It was the right thing to do and it will have a positive impact, not only on China’s people and global safety, but also on the survival of endangered species worldwide. We are pleased and honored that our efforts had an influence on the decision-making process.”The NGO had sent the thousands of signatures it collected to the Chinese government with the suggestion that they become the world’s new wildlife conservation leader. The Guardian reported that the ban is shutting down nearly 20,000 wildlife farms in China. These farms had been raising species like peacocks, civet cats, porcupines, ostriches, wild geese and boars. The Coronavirus is a zoonotic disease, one that can be transmitted from animals to human. According to CNN, The National People’s Congress Standing Committee approved the ban as part of an effort to “safeguard public health and ecological security.” The ban will completely cease the “trade of wildlife” while also completely banning “the eating of wild animals.” The New York Times had previously reported that Pangolins had been the source of the virus outbreak.Friend of the Earth also petitioned China to stop trade in Pangolins and Dr Bray has been interviewed on the subject on BBC World Service Radio and Radio 4, Business Matters (min 18) https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w172wmxc4438gl4 China has been the world’s largest market for wildlife products—an estimated $20 billion global enterprise. This would make wild animal trade the fourth largest illegal business after drugs, human smuggling and illegal weapons trafficking.

Friend of the Sea and Friend of the Earth Launches Petition to Ban China’s Wildlife Food Markets

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 5 febbraio 2020

Friend of the Earth and Friend of the Sea, the preeminent worldwide food certifications have launched a petition asking the Chinese government to permanently close markets that sell wildlife for food. The petition is a response both to the recent outbreak of the deadly Coronavirus, which has been traced to China’s wildlife markets, and the over all environmental damage these markets are causing. China has announced a temporary, immediate ban on wild animal trading, but Friend of the Earth and Friend of the Sea would like to see the ban become permanent.“We applaud China’s decision to place a short-term ban wildlife trading, but the ban should be forever,” said Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Earth. “The ban should include not only wet markets, but supermarkets restaurants and e-commerce platforms. Wild animals belong in nature.” The NGO plans to send all the signatures to the Chinese government with the suggestion that they become the world’s new wildlife conservation leader.
As of January 30, 2020, more than 8124 cases of the Wuhan Coranavirus have been confirmed in China, causing more than 171 deaths. The virus is becoming a worldwide threat as dozens of confirmed cases arise in 14 places outside of mainland China, including at least five in the US, according to CNN. The Coronavirus is a zoonotic disease that can be transmitted from animals to human. The outbreak comes probably from a snake and has been traced to a market in Wuhan known for selling wild animals for consumptions including dogs, turtles, bats, snakes, giant salamander, crocodiles, hedgehogs and marmots.China is the world’s largest market for wildlife products, which is estimated to be a $20 billion global enterprise—fourth insize only after the illegal drug trade, human smuggling and illegal weapons trafficking. Bray added, “Wildlife trafficking undermines human security in resource-dependent local communities, severely harms the way of life of indigenous people and causes substantial economic losses.”If these wildlife markets persist, we will continue to face heightened risks from emerging new lethal viruses and pandemic spread.

Friend of the Sea Publishes Certification Standard for Sustainable Sea Salt Production

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 1 febbraio 2020

Friend of the Sea, the preeminent certification standard for products and services that respect and protect the marine environment, announced today that it has published a certification standard for sustainable sea salt production. Sea salt production practices can have a significant impact on marine and coastal wildlife. Companies that meet the sea salt certification criteria can the Friend of the Sea eco-label on their sea salt products.“Salt is so common that we often forget that much of it comes from the sea,” said Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Sea. “Protecting the marine environment needs to include ensuring that sea salt production practices are sustainable.”The process of extracting salt from seawater has changed little in thousands of years. It involves trapping water in shallow ponds or “pans” and allowing the water to evaporate. The remaining salt can then be harvested and refined. Seasalt is used in food preparation, but also in many industrial applications like the production of chlorine.Sea salt production can affect the marine ecosystem and the well-being of both land and marine flora and fauna. This is due to the process’s tendency to disrupt the natural flow of water at the shoreline. The processes changes waterways, whichin turn potentially negatively affects feeding grounds, breeding and so forth. To meet the Friend of the Sea requirements, a sea salt producer must pass an audit. The audit examines the producers social and environmental management systems, emergency procedures, machinery and equipment, legal compliance and conservation of the ecosystem. In this latter category, the salt producer must affirm that construction of their salt pans has not destroyed any natural ecosystem. If there has been environmental damage, the salt producer must provide a mitigation plan. The audit also looks at the impact of the salt facility on the aquatic ecosystem and use of hazardous substances, along with many other factors.

Tartalife Turtle Safe Project Produces Results for Friend of the Sea and Partners

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 11 novembre 2019

The TartaLife Project, which includes the “Turtle Safe” certification from Friend of the Sea, is producing impressive results as it heads into its sixth year of operation. The program has resulted in substantial reductions in deadly “bycatch” of turtles in commercial fishing, the publication of scientific papers and more. Friend of the Sea is the leading worldwide certification standard for products and services that respectand protect the marine environment. The organization is a project consultant in the TartaLife Project.
The Mediterranean hosts large numbers sea turtle species, including the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and the green turtle (Chelonia mydas). Unfortunately, sea turtles were getting caught in fishing nets at the rate of 40,000 per year—10,000 of which died. Friend of the Sea and its partners in TartaLife felt that urgent action was needed to prevent an environmental catastrophe.
To address the crisis, the TartaLife project was launched in 2013 with the goal of reducing the loggerhead turtle mortality from commercial fishing. The project also intended to contribute to the species’ conservation in the Mediterranean Sea.The project was funded by the EU through the LIFE + NATURA 2012 fund, it was co-financed by the Marche Region and supported by the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies and Tourism – General Fisheries Directorate (MIPAAFT) and involved the15 Italian coastal regions. In six years, TartaLife has produced impressive results. These include a 100% reduction in turtle bycatch obtained with TEDs, a 100% reduction in turtle bycatch obtained with UV-LED lamps and collapsible fish pots and a 30% reduction of turtle bycatch obtained using circle hooks, with reduction of direct mortality. More than 1,500 turtles have been rescued by TartaLife Centers.
“This step towards the certification of the fish product is essential in order to reach the recognition of the activity done and to undertake the path towards the diffusion of low impact devices among fishermen” said Alessandro Lucchetti, Project Coordinator (CNR-IRBIM).The project has held more than 6,000 public events, engaging with 53 vessels and 239 fishermen in sea trials testing of circle hooks. Thirty-three vessels and180 fishermen were involved in sea trials testing TEDs. Over 500 fishermen participated in information seminars, with 704 attending first aid seminars. The program has reached more than one million tourists, with TartaLife publishing 10,000 press releases and 100 reports. The group has published eight papers in international scientific journals.
As part of the project, Friend of the Sea worked with its partners to devise the “Turtle Safe” logo, which is analogous to the world-famous Dolphin Safe brand. This is the first label identifying fishing activities that have a low impact on sea turtles inthe entire Mediterranean. The new brand will be unveiled by Friend of the Sea, whowill own it throughout the Mediterranean.

Friend of the Sea and fair-fish awarded Open Philanthropy Project grant to boost Fish Welfare

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 18 gennaio 2018

fair fish.pngFriend of the Sea and fair-fish international association have just been awarded a grant from the Open Philanthropy Project to promote animal welfare principles among Friend of the Sea’s aquaculture certified companies. As part of the two-years project, the FishEthoBase-research team of fair-fish international will assess the welfare of fish on most of Friend of the Sea’s aquaculture certified companies by direct observation of their current practices. Findings from these assessments will then be used to create farm-specific improvement recommendations and to develop animal welfare criteria for possible inclusion in Friend of the Sea’s standards. Additionally, Friend of the Sea and fair-fish plan to share their research through formal presentations at academic and industry conferences.
“Friend of the Sea plans to gradually introduce fish welfare requirements in its certification criteria” explains Paolo Bray, Founder and Director of Friend of the Sea. “Animal welfare is strongly tied to environmental sustainability and it is part of what consumers expect from a responsible aquaculture company”.According to the understanding of FishEthoBase, fish welfare is guaranteed if a fish can live up to the potential of the species and develop its individuality. Campaigns have led to the introduction of animal welfare legislation in the EU and other countries as happened in Switzerland with new Animal Welfare Law issued in 2008. However, fish welfare has often been regarded as a secondary issue. More recent studies confirming aquatic and other species are sentient, have initiated a new wave of initiatives in favour of animal welfare, such as in or in the United Kingdom where Environmental Secretary Michael Grove is the promoter of a proposala proposal to change UK law in order to recognize that animals can feel pain.“At fair-fish international we’ve been fighting for twenty years for the consideration of the natural needs of fishes kept in captivity, risking to make ourselves unpopular at first”, comments Billo Heinzpeter Studer, Founder and President of fair-fish international and responsible for the implementation of the grant, “but gradually things began to change. Together with other international associations, like Friend of the Sea, we started to share views and objectives and we are now working on making producers aware of the importance of fish welfare”.The joint Friend of the Sea and fair-fish research project will test aquaculture companies’ performance face some basic animal welfare parameters: quality of water and environment, behavioural and physiological status, feed, and training of the personnel. The first round of visits to Friend of the Sea’s certified companies will start January 2018 and it will involve fish farms based in Italy, Croatia, Spain, Turkey, Greece and Australia. Friend of the Sea first sustainable seafood program recognized

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 10 marzo 2016

commissione europeaby EU National Accreditation Body. Friend of the Sea is the first certification scheme for products from sustainable fisheries and aquaculture to have achieved official endorsement by an EU National Accreditation Body. This is the highest possible recognition of consistency and integrity that any certification program could aim at.
Only EU National Accreditation Bodies can carry out accreditation activities in the EU, according to the regulation of the European Parliament and Commission n° 765 of July 9, 2008. Any other private accreditation would thus be not compliant with EU Accreditation rules and possibly in infringement. Friend of the Sea is now working only with those Certification Bodies that have applied for this official EU accreditation.
“EU National Accreditation positions Friend of the Sea above any other sustainable fisheries certification program, as far as independence and credibility are concerned”, comments Paolo Bray, Director and Founder of Friend of the Sea. “We are disappointed to learn that the new GSSI benchmark will accept application of schemes not compliant with the EU Accreditation rules as this surely weakens the validity of the GSSI assessment, with a potential to mislead companies and consumers.”

Tuna fleet setting nets on dolphins not qualified for Friend of the Sea certification

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 21 aprile 2015

Friend-of-the-seaFriend of the Sea has received requests for certification from two major Latin America tuna shipowners whose vessels set nets on dolphins to catch tuna. Audit was not authorized because one of the requirements for Friend of the Sea certification is that the tuna company be also certified Dolphin-Safe by the Earth Island Institute.“Setting nets on Dolphins is a practice which implies use of explosives or paint bombs and speedboats to harass and encircle dolphins,” explains Dr Paolo Bray. “Dolphin mortality is unfortunately still allowed by some nations as part of tuna fishing activity in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. This fishing method has lead to a decimation of dolphins populations. No dolphin-killing fleet will ever be certified Friend of the Sea sustainable.”“While Friend of the Sea has denied certification to these fisheries, other programs seem to consider this practice potentially sustainable and worth evaluation,” concludes Dr Bray “Certification of such a dolphin targeting fishery as sustainable would be misleading for consumers. The certifying eco-label will be associated to a cruel and wasteful fishing practice which has killed millions of dolphins over the years.” Friend of the Sea is an international certification program for products from sustainable fisheries and aquaculture. Over 400 companies in more than 50 countries have relied on Friend of the Sea to assess the sustainability of their seafood origins. Audits, based on best and most updated available scientific data, are run by accredited independent certification bodies.

North Kurilsk Seiner Fleet Base is a sister company to Kamchatka’s Tymlatskii Rybokombinat, which together with Unimak, obtained certification for sockeye and pink salmon. The audit was run by an accredited international body and based on Friend of the Sea strict social and environmental requirements.Use of dredges is authorized as the level of scallop population is so high that the gear does not touch the seabed. Vessels are operated at due distance from the coast: 12 miles for driftnets and 1.2 miles for traps. Crabs and echinoderms are immediately released alive when they accidentally enter the traps.Discard of scallops fishing tends to zero. This achievement is neatly under 8% maximum allowed level of discard according to Friend of the Sea.The reliability of the company is also proved by its modern fleet whose fishing vessels are mandatorily registered with Russian Federation’s flag.”Unimak Maritime is proud of Tymlatski’s double Friend of the Sea certification.” comments Mr William Turner, Unimak Maritime Group’s President. “This further recognition confirms once again our deep sense of responsibility and attention to environmental conservation.”
