GEICO’s Tips for Sharing the Road with Motorcycles

As the summer months approach, millions of motorcycles will be hitting the roads. GEICO wants to remind you that motorcycle safety is everyone’s responsibility.In spite of all the available motorcycle-training courses, reflective clothing, and protective gear, one of the biggest threats to motorcyclists is all the other drivers on the roads and highways.Drivers that have experienced close calls may have completely failed to notice a fully visible object like a motorcycle because their attention was engaged on another task. This is known as inattentional blindness. Making it harder for a vehicle driver to judge the distance of a motorcycle approaching is the bike’s smaller size and speed.Congested roadways, vehicles changing lanes or turning, and distracted driving are among the factors that cause many of the preventable motorcycle fatalities each year. Even though the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports the number of motorcycle fatalities dropped from a high in 2016 of 5,286 down to 5,172 in 2017, the proportion of motorcyclist fatalities relative to all traffic-related fatalities has more than doubled over the past 20 years.

GEICO’s Center of Excellence earns ‘Exceptional Employer’ Mira Award

GEICO’s Center of Excellence took home the Exceptional Employer Award at the 20th Annual Mira Awards, which honor “The Best in Tech in Indiana.” The Exceptional Employer Award celebrates a company for its commitment to “hiring and developing talent, cultivating workspaces and workplace culture, and deliberately increasing diversity.”A panel of judges—including CEOs, CTOs and start-up founders who reviewed more than 100 nominations to select a winner in 14 different categories—lauded GEICO for its efforts in all of those areas and for its economic investment in Central Indiana and the area’s talented workforce.“The Mira Awards judges think GEICO has demonstrated remarkable faith in Central Indiana as an emerging tech hub as well as in the available tech talent in the community by establishing its Center of Excellence and through its subsequent support in the growth of the tech ecosystem through employee training and community engagement,” reads a statement from TechPoint, the nonprofit accelerator that presents the Mira Awards.A state-of-the-art innovation hub focused on developing software that will transform the GEICO customer experience, the Center of Excellence opened less than a year ago with a hiring blitz that saw 167 new associates brought onboard in 167 days. Hiring continues at a steady pace, with a goal to add an additional 400 associates in the next few years.The Center of Excellence nurtures developing local tech talent through a growing number of partnerships with 15 area universities and nonprofits like IWiT (Indy Women in Tech) and the tech boot camp Eleven Fifty Academy.

(Hint: 1) Insurance policy card, and 2) Vehicle registration.)“You might not think that leaving your insurance policy card and vehicle registration can lead to identity theft but they can.”Identity thieves can make a fraudulent claim using your policy information card, and if your vehicle is stolen, a theft could claim legal possession by using the registration. Using a stolen driver’s license and social security number, identity thieves can also apply for vehicle insurance in your name as a means to make fraudulent claims.“Insurance fraud is a growing business making billions of dollars a year,” Shiring added. “That makes insurance fraud equivalent to the GDP of 182 worldwide economies.”

Corbin and Hoagland Named GEICO Senior VPs

Pionne Corbin and Rick Hoagland have been promoted to senior vice presidents by the GEICO Board of Directors.Corbin will manage the regional office in Lakeland, Fla., where she will be based, and oversee the company’s Southeast and Midwest regional offices and Centralized Services operation, all of which are in Macon, Ga. Hoagland will have oversight responsibilities for GEICO’s business in New England, New York and New Jersey.Since June 2016, Corbin had served as vice president of GEICO’s Buffalo, N.Y., regional office. She began her career with GEICO as a management intern at the Fredericksburg, Va., regional office in 1993. After completing the internship in 1996, she was named a claims service representative supervisor. Corbin then moved to the underwriting division, where she was a sales supervisor and then a service manager. In 2004, she managed the new business underwriting division and the re-underwriting division.
Corbin became operations manager of the commercial auto division in 2009 and director of the division in 2012. A year later, she became a GEICO officer, with her election to assistant VP of Buffalo underwriting operations. She became assistant VP of claims in 2015 and held that position until she was promoted to VP of the Buffalo region.Corbin graduated cum laude from the University of Mary Washington with a B.A. in economics.Hoagland joined GEICO in 1994 as a telephone claims representative in Fredericksburg. He advanced through several positions and was named a manager in 2002. Hoagland was later selected to complete the executive assistant program at GEICO headquarters in Chevy Chase, Md., and then became director of claims home office systems.Hoagland was elected an officer in 2009 and managed claims operations for the Midwest region in Macon; later, he managed underwriting operations there.In 2012, he was promoted to vice president of GEICO’s companywide claims operations, and then went on to serve as VP for operations in New England and New Jersey. Four years later, Hoagland became regional VP of the company’s Long Island, N.Y., office. Hoagland holds a B.B.A. in finance from The College of William and Mary.

Vehicle crashes jump on the Fourth of July every year, making it the deadliest driving day of the year, says the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Whether you’re on your way to see local fireworks or taking a longer road trip, GEICO encourages drivers to remember the following tips to help stay safe during the holiday.The speed limit is your friend: While you might be in a hurry to beat holiday traffic, remember that driving over the speed limit puts you, your passengers and other vehicles on the road in danger. Leave early to give yourself more time. Drive at a safe speed throughout your trip to help avoid an accident or speeding ticket.
Explore your options: Drunk-driving crashes account for more than 50 percent of the accidents on Independence Day, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). If you plan on having a drink, designate a sober friend to drive or use a ridesharing app.
Declare freedom from distractions: That red, white and blue themed Snap or text message can wait until you park. Put your phone away or switch it to Do Not Disturb. Download directions and music playlists beforehand. Plan where you will stop to eat or get gas.
Make sure your ride is road trip ready: Before any road trip, check for repairs to ensure your vehicle makes it safely to your destination. If you go to the NHTSA Safety Issues and recalls site you can type in your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to find current recalls.

If you are gearing up for the riding season or thinking about becoming a new rider, make sure you are on a properly sized bike for your ability. Controlling your bike with one foot on the ground or the tip of your toes is not the most confidence-inspiring approach. You should be able to comfortably put both feet on the ground when the bike is stopped, reach the control levers and foot controls for better handling of your bike. Motorcycle safety courses and clinics for on- and off-road riding are available for all experience levels.Before you ride, give the bike a quick once-over to ensure everything is working properly. Over- or under-inflated tires cause the bike to handle differently. Tire pressure, throttle operation, clutch and brake adjustment have the most influence on your control and safety.When purchasing riding gear, select proper fitting clothes for the riding position. Loose or poorly fitted clothing may feel better when you’re walking around, but in the event you go down, they will twist and not protect you as designed. Today’s protective clothing often features vents, waterproofing, reflective material and hidden pockets. Make sure your helmet is at least DOT-approved and includes a face shield.A motorcycles’ smaller size makes it harder to see, so always ride defensively, leave your headlight on at all times, signal in advance and always watch for turning vehicles. Pass only in the passing lane and give yourself enough time to brake. Avoid other vehicles’ blind spots. Be aware of road hazards such as potholes, train tracks, oil slicks, road debris and animals. GEICO Catastrophe Teams Readied as Hurricane Harvey Heads to Texas Coastal Regions

Hurricane HarveyHurricane Harvey, gathering more strength as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico, is expected to hurtle itself at Texas coastal communities Saturday and perhaps spawn tornado activity as well. GEICO has assigned catastrophe teams to handle what may impact those areas and further inland.
GEICO is encouraging residents to heed all warnings from official emergency agencies and prepare for flooding, falling objects and wind.Some important things to keep in mind now as the storm approaches the U.S.:
Plan an evacuation route. If you are using your car for an evacuation, carefully plan your route, designate a family meeting spot and always keep a full tank of gas.
Protect your home – Window shutters, trimmed trees, filled holes and secure roofing will improve your home’s resistance to damage from high winds and water. If you live in an area prone to flooding, move your valuables to a safer location in your residence.
Create a disaster supply kit – Make sure you have essential items such as non-perishable food, water, first-aid kits, batteries, blankets, flashlights, a battery-powered radio and all necessary medicine/prescriptions.
Update your home inventory list – Maintain an up-to-date list of all the items in your home. Take photos of valuables such as electronics and jewelry. In the event that damage occurs due to a natural disaster, maintaining a home inventory will help speed up the claims process.
Safeguard your important documents – Store your social security cards, birth certificates, IDs, insurance cards, and other important documents in a safe, fire-proof and water-resistant location.
Protect your vehicles. Think seriously about moving your vehicles – cars, boats, RVs, etc. – inland. In many cases parking garages or other public spaces could offer sufficient protection to help prevent flood damage. Follow official instructions – Check the local and national weather forecasts for advisories, updates and official instructions. Be prepared to put your preparedness plan in place immediately after an alert goes out.“We hope the storm does not significantly impact you and your family,” said Dan Beacom, GEICO regional vice president.

IBM acquisirà Tealeaf Technology, Inc.

IBM ha annunciato un accordo definitivo per l’acquisizione di Tealeaf Technology, Inc., fornitore leader di software per l’analisi della customer experience, che aiuta le organizzazioni ad acquisire informazioni e a rispondere più rapidamente alle tendenze dei consumatori nel mercato dell’era digitale.
