Second-Generation Blood Test for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 23 maggio 2019

Gemelli Biotech, in partnership with the Medically Associated Science and Technology (MAST) program at Cedars-Sinai, announced new findings that validate a second-generation diagnostic blood test for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) as the most accurate ever. Available commercially as ibs-smart™, the test could provide physicians with the most conclusive data currently attainable for ruling in IBS. Primarily applicable to patients with a diarrheal component to their symptoms, the test could serve up to two-thirds of the 45 million Americans suffering from IBS.After over a decade of uncovering the pathophysiology of post-infectious IBS, researchers at Cedars-Sinai validated the antibodies anti-CdtB and anti-vinculin as highly specific biomarkers measurable in blood. This innovative blood test offered patients the first-ever opportunity to receive a diagnosis of IBS by ruling in the disease, rather than by ruling out other diseases.Scientists at the Medically Associated Science and Technology program at Cedars-Sinai, in collaboration with Gemelli Biotech, developed a proprietary epitope optimization process that was instrumental to improving the test for its second-generation launch as ibs-smart™. Cedars-Sinai has entered into an exclusive license agreement with Gemelli Biotech for several patent applications covering the blood test technology. At Digestive Disease Week (DDW 2019) in San Diego, the MAST team reported the results of their validation study. The second-generation blood test is >90% specific in distinguishing patients with IBS from patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease using each marker. When combined, the post-test probability of IBS is >98%. That means that for the first time, a near certain diagnosis of IBS can be made if both biomarkers are elevated.
Gemelli Biotech is determined to bring ibs-smart™ to physicians worldwide. Physicians in the US can order the test for patients via a kit-based system. The company helps interested patients find local specialists and blood draw labs. Samples are tested in a CLIA-certified lab in Irvine, California. The test is covered at least in part by most insurance providers.
Dr. Mark Pimentel, Executive Director of the MAST program, as well as a practicing gastroenterologist and co-founder of Gemelli Biotech, believes the greater diagnostic accuracy is meaningful to patients and doctors alike. “As a physician, I want to know what is causing the disease in my patient, and I want to know as efficiently as possible. This test tells me that my patient has IBS and I can get to the desired therapy without undue testing.”

UNICEF partecipa a Generation Unlimited

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 23 settembre 2018

New York.

The newest generation of cybersecurity analysts

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 31 ottobre 2017

baltimoraBaltimore. BluVector, a leader in machine learning-based network intrusion detection, is partnering with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) to help build the newest generation of cybersecurity analysts. A team of students within the College of Engineering and Information Technology will now be using a version of BluVector to analyze the university’s network traffic in real time. The goal is to better understand how to find, confirm and contain cyber threats using advanced analytics, including supervised machine learning, speculative emulation and behavioral heuristics. Cyber threat detection and response within an academic environment is challenging as IT departments often have less rigid control over devices on the network yet are tasked with supporting a vast variety of endpoints. By utilizing BluVector’s network intrusion system, students participating in the UMBC program will gain real world experience using deep analysis and detection to triage malicious events for either automated response actions or higher-level human investigation. It’s experience that will make them perfectly suited to operate as Level 1 analysts and highly sought after by future employers.
“At BluVector, learning is in the DNA of our team and our product,” said Robert Thompson, BluVector’s liaison to UMBC and a recent graduate of the Cyber Scholars program at the University. “A partnership with UMBC enables hands-on learning for students and we hope we can, in turn, learn from the students as they observe BluVector in a specialized environment.” “We’re pleased to incorporate BluVector into the ecosystem UMBC has built to develop the next generation of cybersecurity talent,” said Dr. Charles Nicholas, professor of computer science and electrical engineering, UMBC and faculty advisor for UMBC’s Cyber Dawgs, its 2017 National Collegiate Cyber Defense Championship winning Cyber Defense Team. “We hope exposure to analytics driven advanced threat detection solutions both sparks curiosity in data science and underscores the value of machine learning among our students as they enter the workforce to tackle the emerging and dynamic cyber threats we all face.”

‘The buildings talk to me. Every one has something to say’

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 11 luglio 2017

venice1veniceThe Rubelli family firm has been producing fabrics in Venice for generations. But, as Nicolò Rubelli, its director, explains, the company is just as focused on the future. Jonathan Bastaple went to meet him. Venice is a city of textures and surfaces: the façades hang like faded brocade curtains above the smooth edged docks and portals. The architectural patterns are fascinating — not just the quatrefoil windows and the rhythmic verticals of slender arches, but also the accidental abstractions, where pink plaster has been stained by salt water or fallen away to reveal rough red brickwork, or patch upon patch of repair has left an ancient frontage looking dappled and skewbald like the flank of a pinto horse. And then there is the green and mutable water, which shimmers like a bolt of raw silk rolled out on a narrow table.Rubelli is speaking about his fragile hometown as he makes his way through narrow early-morning streets, across deserted little squares, over tiny humpbacked bridges. He is a collector of maps, specifically old maps of Venice, but he also carries a layered cartographical history of the city in his head.
‘The buildings talk to me,’ he says. ‘Every one of them has something to say.’ He pauses at the ornate Chiesa di San Moisè. ‘Look at that: a baroque church covered in sculptures, but not a single religious symbol. Everything on that façade is a monument to the Fini family who built it, a declaration of their wealth and influence. It’s not a church at all, it’s a triumphal arch masquerading as a church.’
The dawn walk comes to a very Venetian dead end at a square quayside on the Grand Canal. There’s no way to go further without climbing into a water taxi. But Rubelli produces a key from his pocket and goes to an unobtrusive door in the gable end of a building to one side. It leads into a magnificent Renaissance vestibule — low-lying, dark and reeking of history. This is the ground floor of the Palazzo Corner Spinelli, the Venice HQ of Rubelli when Nicolò’s father was in charge. It is now a rather wonderful corporate pied-à-terre.
‘This is like my second home,’ says Nicolò, as he heads up the broad staircase to the office. It is a fabulous set of rooms: coffered ceilings, another disguised triumphal arch in the form of an enormous fireplace by Jacopo Sansovino, a deep light well in which classical busts perch on niches like cormorants on a cliff face. Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 27 gennaio 2015

Onu palaceNew York. The head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said today that while there is tremendous volatility and turmoil around the world, this year presented a unique opportunity to eradicate poverty and agree on a path for sustainable development.“At UNDP, we see 2015 as a huge opportunity to advance the global sustainable development agenda,” said Helen Clark at the opening session of UNDP’s Executive Board meeting in New York. “The Millennium Development Goals are set to expire at the end of this year and UN Member States will meet in September to agree on the new Sustainable Development Goals, which will guide global development priorities for the next 15 years.”She also cited other events this year that would be critical to global development: the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in March, in Sendai, Japan; the 3rd International Conference on Financing for Development in July in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; and the UN climate change conference in Paris, France, in December.“The combined outcomes of these major processes are a once in a generation opportunity to set a transformational global agenda for sustainable development,” she said.In her statement she also outlined UNDP’s work in response to current crises around the world such as the refugee crisis in countries neighboring Syria, and the crises in Central African Republic, South Sudan, Ukraine, and many others.“Through our work on early recovery we aim to support countries to move from the relief phase to recovery as quickly as possible,” she said. She also discussed UNDP’s implementation of its new Strategic Plan and its ongoing reforms to make the organization more effective and efficient. She also welcomed Fernando Carrera, Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the UN, on his election as President of the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board and thanked outgoing President Peter Thomson, Permanent Representative of Fiji to the United Nations.”This is an exceptional time for the development community”, said Carrera, “The months leading up to the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals offer a unique opportunity for all of us to shape a global agenda for the next generation that will ensure a reduction of poverty and inequality for the world’s poorest and most vulnerable.” “Likewise, in the run-up to the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris in December, this year is equally crucial for the international community’s combined efforts to counter the effects of climate change.” “The Executive Board will continue to oversee and support UNDP in the coming year, in particular in the Organization’s ongoing efforts to strengthen oversight and accountability amongst partners and donors.” Concluding her remarks, Clark said: “UNDP is fully committed to playing its part in making 2015 a launch pad for stepped up efforts to advance human, sustainable, and resilient development for all countries and peoples. We look forward to working with the Board to this end, and thank you once again for your support for our work.”

Dantean Dialogues: Engaging with the Legacy of Amilcare Iannucci

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 30 marzo 2014

Thursday, April 3, 2014 – 6:00pm – 8:00pm   Istituto Italiano di Cultura – 496 Huron St., Toronto   Free admission On the occasion of the launch of Dantean Dialogues: Engaging with the Legacy of Amilcare Iannucci. Edited by Maggie Kilgour and Elena Lombardi (Toronto Italian Studies. University of Toronto Press, 2013), the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Emilio Goggio Chair in Italian Studies, Centre for Comparative Literature and University of Toronto Press organize a tribute in memory of Prof. Amilcare Iannucci and of Dr. Ron Schoeffel, with the participation of Massimo Ciavolella (UCLA) and Maggie Kilgour (McGill University). Dantean Dialogues is a collection of essays by some of the most outstanding Dante scholars. These essays enter into conversation with the main themes of the scholarship of Amilcare Iannucci (d. 2007), one of the leading researchers on Dante of his generation and arguably Canada’s finest scholar of the Italian poet.  The essays focus on the major themes of Iannucci’s work, including the development of Dante’s early poetry, Dante’s relation to classical and biblical sources, and Dante’s reception. The contributors cover crucial aspects of Dante’s work, from the authority of the New Life to the novelty of his early poetry, to key episodes in the Comedy, to the poem’s afterlife. Together, the essays show how Iannucci’s reading of central cruxes in Dante’s texts continues to inspire Dante studies – a testament to his continuing influence and profound intellectual legacy.

Margot Kässmann elects Chairperson

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 31 ottobre 2009

The Synod of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), meeting in Ulm, has elected Dr. Margot Kässmann as the new chairperson of its Council. Since 1999 Dr Kässmann has been the Lutheran Bishop of Hanover. She is the first woman to be elected as the leader of the EKD. She will succeed Bishop Wolfgang Huber, who is retiring. The Venerable Colin Williams, General Secretary of the Conference of European Churches (CEC), has sent Bishop Kässmann a letter of congratulations stating that: “As the Church in Germany seeks ways to speak a word of truth and hope to a generation which longs for both, the EKD is blessed indeed that you will bring to your new position your capacity to speak simply but profoundly into the hearts and minds of women and men”.
The Conference of European Churches (CEC) is a fellowship of some 120 Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican and Old Catholic Churches from all countries of Europe, plus 40 associated organisations. CEC was founded in 1959. It has offices in Geneva, Brussels and Strasbourg.

Travesties and Masquerades

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 1 luglio 2009

cindy shermanNew York until 11/7/2009495 Broadway Swiss Institute Eleanor Antin, Joan Jonas, Manon, Ursula Mayer, Cindy Sherman, Hannah Wilke Curated by Gianni Jetzer Eleanor Antin, Joan Jonas, Manon, Ursula Mayer, Cindy Sherman, Hannah Wilke A large number of feminist artists from the early 1970’s adopted aspects of self performance and masquerade to unhinge the alignment of certain codes of objectification with the female body, as Amelia Jones remarks in her essay Manon and Masquerade – Gender as Counter- Transference. In conjunction with Manon’s first show in the U.S., five films from female artists are added as an additional layer to her exhibition, bringing artists together from different generations and backgrounds, grouped around the idea of the masquerade.
In her filmic performance The King (1972), Eleanor Antin applies hair to her face. She moves through a variety of bearded faces seeking the identity most appropriate to her facial structure and satisfying to her aspirations. Antin transforms herself into a man and adopts one of her recurring performance personae, “The King.” Based on the 1972 performance of the same name, Organic Honey’s Visual Telepathy, a film by Joan Jonas, is an enigmatic ritual of identity. In this performance, Jonas plays both herself and her masked double Organic Honey. This alter ego, whose guise is a frozen doll’s face adorned in feathered headdress and costumes, embodies artifice, masquerade and narcissism. The film examines female gestures and archetypes, both personal and cultural. In using disguise and masquerade to examine the self, the film of Jonas inquires into the subjectivity and objectivity of personal identity. (Image: Cindy Sherman)

Ferdinand Georg Waldmuller. A retrospective

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 10 giugno 2009

ferdinandWien Augarten Contemporary Scherzergasse 1a Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller (1793 – 1865) was one of the most important Austrian painters of the Biedermeier period. Whether it was the conquest of the landscape and thus the convincing rendering of closeness or distance, the accurate characterisation of the human face, the detailed and refined description of textures, or the depiction of rural everyday life: his works brilliant, explanatory, moralising, and socially critical influenced a whole generation of artists. Being an advocate of natural observation and plein air painting, as well as a critic of academic painting, Waldmüller was far ahead of his time.  The Belvedere accommodates the Waldmüller Archive and owns the most comprehensive collections of his works worldwide. In this retrospective, starting in spring 2009 and comprising some 120 works, masterpieces from the Belvedere’s holdings will be complemented by loans from national and international collections. Several paintings that were thought to be lost will be presented to the public for the first time.  The exhibition is being organised in cooperation with the Muse’e du Louvre, Paris. (Ferdinand)
