Defining English Beauty

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 15 giugno 2016

English BeautyLondon – Infatuation with arresting beauty has always compelled artists to produce masterpieces and four superb works are included in Christie’s 250th anniversary sale, Defining British Art, to be held in London on the evening of 30 June 2016: Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s Portrait of Jane Morris, bust-length (circa 1870, illustrated above left), Sir Joshua Reynolds’ Portrait of Lucy Long, Mrs George Hardinge (1820, illustrated above centre left), Frederic Leighton’s Pavonia (circa 1859, illustrated above centre right) and Lucian Freud’s A Girl (Pauline Tennant) (circa 1945, illustrated above right).Paying homage to the true joy of beauty, it is evident how these four portraits transcend and evolve notions of Keats’ timeless sentiment. To a contemporary eye, it is only clear how in relation to the celebrities of the 21st Century, these women continue to be celebrated as representatives of 180 years of beauty.
“As Keats described beauty so perfectly in his in poetry, so generations of British painters have been entranced by the most beautiful women of their day. These Muses inspired many of our finest British artists to execute their greatest works. Unwittingly these Muses have shaped the history of British painting from the beginnings of great English portraiture in the 18th Century when Christie’s was founded.” – Jussi Pylkkänen, Global President of Christie’s International. Telematics in electric vehicles (EVs)

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 2 aprile 2010

London Range anxiety remains the major challenge to be resolved to facilitate mass adoption of EVs in the coming years. The introduction of telematics in electric vehicles (EVs) to provide point(s) of interest (POI) and alerts packages that make the user aware of the charging environment, can resolve range anxiety. Unlike conventional vehicles for which it is still an expensive option, most hardware elements required for enabling these services will be built into the cost of the EV. An EV driver will only pay an incremental amount for services included in the subscription they pay for battery leasing and energy plans. New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.automotive.frost.com), Strategic Market and Technology Assessment of Telematics Applications for Electric Vehicles, finds that telematics will have a penetration of more than 80 per cent of all new EVs sold by 2015. Smart navigation hardware will become a standard feature in all new EVs sold by 2015, however users will face additional service costs that are bundled along with energy subscription plans. The most important telematics service will be to provide charging environment-related POIs like the location of the next charging station and the ability to book that charging station. Other significant telematics services will include connecting to the battery and knowing the state of charge. These services will enter the market first. Several OEMs, including Renault, Nissan and GM, are currently developing ingenious telematics concepts for their upcoming EV models like the Fluence, LEAF and Chevrolet Volt. Their real challenge, however, will be to ensure mass market adoption of EVs while providing adequate infrastructure support. Moreover, as EVs will remain niche products for a majority of the conventional OEMs, it remains to be seen whether they will incur development expenses or invest the time to create dedicated telematics concepts for their EVs. This will indirectly impact the involvement of traditional telematics companies in the EV initiative. Strategic Market and Technology Assessment of Telematics Applications for Electric Vehicles is part of the Automotive & Transportation Growth Partnership Services programme, which also includes research in the following markets: Global Trend Analysis of Passenger Vehicle Telematics and Infotainment Market – 2009 Edition, Strategic Analysis of The European Market for Low Cost OEM Navigation Systems, and Comparative Analysis of the European, North American, Chinese, South Korean and Indian Telematics Markets. All research services included in subscriptions provide detailed market opportunities and industry trends that have been evaluated following extensive interviews with market participants.

Catholics come to Copenhagen for climate justice

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 1 dicembre 2009

Catholic church leaders, supporters, aid agencies and advocacy groups are joining forces to urge world leaders for climate justice at talks in Copenhagen. Caritas Internationalis and CIDSE represent 180 Catholic agencies campaigning for a new deal on climate change that puts the needs of the poor first. They’re bringing representatives and bishops from 25 countries to Copenhagen to lobby governments to seize a once in a generation chance to leave a green legacy for future generations. These include Mexico, Zambia, South Africa, North America, the Pacific Islands, Mozambique, Kenya, and Europe. Caritas Internationalis Secretary General Lesley-Anne Knight will be at the talks. She said, “World leaders must agree to legally binding commitments to cutting greenhouse gasses and to paying for the damage that climate change is having on poor communities.  CIDSE Secretary General Bernd Nilles will also be present. He said, “Caritas and CIDSE supporters have been campaigning for over 12 months for a just deal at Copenhagen. Catholic communities around the world want to see their leaders take the necessary measures to safeguard our futures.”  Caritas and CIDSE condemn recent political moves and media reporting that seek to downplay expectations for the outcome of the talks.  “Delay is unacceptable, we want to see justice at Copenhagen,” said Nilles.  CIDSE and Caritas Internationalis are calling for a fair, effective and binding agreement in Copenhagen, and say this must be based on a set of essential criteria. –   Developed countries must commit to at least €131 billion additional public financing per year by 2020, using secure and predictable financing mechanisms, to support developing countries to adapt to the impacts of climate change and to develop sustainably. –   Global commitment to keeping global warming well below 2°C, to emissions peaking between 2013 and 2017, and to achieving a stable level of CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere to 350ppm. –   Industrialized countries as a group taking a target of more than 40% below 1990 levels by 2020, the vast majority of which should be met through domestic emissions reductions. –   Copenhagen outcomes must be legally binding and enforceable.

Church representatives meet the Swedish EU-Presidency

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 2 ottobre 2009

The representatives of COMECE, the Church and Society Commission of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) and Swedish Churches expressed to the Swedish EU-Presidency their deep concern as regards the impact of climate change on the future of mankind and creation. Taking particularly into consideration the heavy burden that climate change represents for developing countries and for future generations, they encouraged the EU to take on all its responsibilities in the upcoming negotiations in Copenhagen, in order to achieve an ambitious worldwide agreement and to promote environmental justice. The discussions also focused on the topic of migration. As it is currently envisaged that a future EU Commissioner should be in charge of both migration and security, Church representatives emphasised the need to make a distinction between the question of migration and that of security issues. Migrants should have their dignity respected and not be considered as a threat to the security of the Union but as a “blessing and a grace” as any human being. In view of the forthcoming High Level Ministerial Conference “Towards Global EU Action Against Trafficking in Human Beings” the Churches also encouraged the Union to intensify its fight against any form of human trafficking and its efforts to protect victims of trafficking. The Church representatives, in view of the negotiations on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in the UN framework, expressed their hope in the Swedish EU Presidency to broker a common and positive European response to the “option zero” proposed by US President Obama. Referring to the draft Equality Directive currently being discussed at the Council of the EU, the Churches recalled their firm commitment against any form of discrimination. However, they expressed concern at the lack of sufficient legal clarity as regards the scope of the Directive in the areas, which remain outside of EU competence, such as education. The Churches also emphasised that any legislation ensuring equal treatment should guarantee respect for other rights and freedoms such as freedom of religion or belief and the freedom of expression. Therefore, all the consequences of the proposal should be duly taken into account before it is adopted. Finally, the representatives also discussed the issue of the dialogue between Churches and EU institutions. This dialogue, which has now been a tradition for many years, will be strengthened when the Treaty of Lisbon and Article 17 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU enter into force. Both the Swedish EU Presidency and the Church representatives insisted on the necessity for this Dialogue being open to a wide range of discussion topics. It should be strengthened on the European as well as on the national level. The meeting with the Swedish Presidency is a good illustration of the dialogue’s openness. It creates a climate of confidence and is a good sign for the future of this dialogue.

Building a new foundation for America

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 23 giugno 2009

From Barrack Obama. Dear Friend,  Last week, I announced United We Serve – a nationwide call to service challenging you and all Americans to volunteer this summer and be part of building a new foundation for America.  And when I say “all,” I mean everyone – young and old, from every background, all across the country. We need individuals, community organizations, corporations, foundations, and our government to be part of this effort.  Today, for the official kick off of United We Serve, members of my administration have fanned out across America to participate in service events and encourage all Americans to join them.  The First Lady is rolling up her sleeves and getting to work too. But before she headed out today, she asked me to share this message with you.  Our nation faces some of the greatest challenges it has in generations and we know it’s going to take a lot of hard work to get us back on track.  While Michelle and I are calling on every American to participate in United We Serve, the call to service doesn’t end this fall. We need to stay involved in our towns and communities for a long time to come. After all, America’s new foundation will be built one neighborhood at a time – and that starts with you.  (President Barack Obama)
