GENEVA – Christie’s Magnificent Jewels sale on 11 May 2022 will offer a superb selection of historic and modern jewellery, alongside two diamonds that are each considered among the most exceptional gemstones to ever appear at auction. Headlining the sale at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues is THE ROCK (estimate: CHF19,000,000-30,000,000, please find the dedicated press release here), at 228.31 carats, it is the largest white diamond ever seen throughout auction market history.Returning to Christie’s saleroom for a third time since its mining in 1901 is The Red Cross Diamond (estimate on request, please find the dedicated press release here). This diamond was first sold at Christie’s in 1918, when the intense yellow cushion-shaped diamond weighing 205.07 carats first captivated collectors by being offered as part of the Red Cross Appeal. The Red Cross Diamond lives up to its celebrated history by once again being offered to benefit the International Committee of the Red Cross.“For nearly half a century, our family has had the privilege of safeguarding the Red Cross diamond. Since it was first brought to market in 1918, the legacy of this symbol of humanity has always been the support of communities ravaged by war, famine and other hardships endured by people across the world. At this auspicious moment in history, we honour the call others have made before us. In collaboration with Christie’s, we are pleased to offer The Red Cross Diamond for sale with a share of the proceeds to be donated to the great institution whose name it bears. We further dedicate this sale to the tireless efforts of the volunteers of the International Committee of the Red Cross and are privileged to support their cause”, added the consignor of The Red Cross Diamond.Max Fawcett, Head of Department, Jewellery, Geneva: “We are delighted to present the Geneva Magnificent Jewels auction led by THE ROCK, the largest ever white diamond to be offered at auction and a landmark moment in the market. Alongside this the legendary Red Cross Diamond, which has supported those enduring hardships since it was sold at Christie’s Red Cross Appeal in 1918, is offered with a share of the proceeds to be donated to the International Committee of the Red Cross. With the very best quality gemstones, jewels from noble provenance and iconic designs, the auction represents an exciting opportunity for our international collectors this season.”The sale includes exceptional tiaras from the 19th and 20th centuries, among them the Fürstenberg Tiara (estimate: CHF400,000-600,000, illustrated below, left), a pearl and diamond tiara bearing the mark of the famous Austrian jeweller Gustav Flach. This exemplary piece of jewellery craftsmanship belonged to H.S.H. The Princess of Fürstenberg, née Countess Irma of Schönborn Buchheim (1867-1948), a member of one of the pre-eminent aristocratic families in the Habsburg Empire. A letter in the Fürstenberg archives, headed by jeweller Flach Mediansky & Paltscho, explains the many ways in which the tiara can be transformed, from a complete tiara appropriate for the court balls of Viennese high society to more moderate styling of the pearls, while the diamond motives can be worn as a necklace, brooch or hair pins.

Imperial Jewels at Christie’s Geneva

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 30 marzo 2021

GENEVA – May 2021 marks 200 years since the death of Emperor Napoléon I (1769-1821), and it is an extraordinary coincidence that this spectacular parure of sapphires and diamonds, from the collection of his adoptive daughter, Stephanie de Beauharnais, Grand Duchess of Baden (1789-1860) will be offered for sale at Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva on 12 May 2021. The nine pieces, including a tiara, one collier, one pair of earrings, two pendants and brooches as well as one ring and one bracelet will be offered as individual lots. A total of 38 sapphires originating from Ceylon were used to create this parure in the early 1800s. The collection also includes the important sapphire crown of Maria II Queen of Portugal, set with a remarkable Burmese sapphire in the centre.Napoleon I married Josephine de Beauharnais in 1796, who was Stephanie’s aunt. Stephanie was born on 28 August 1789, unfortunately her mother died two years later and she spent her early years with the nuns in the French country side. Soon after her aunt’s marriage to Napoléon I she joined them and grew up in Versailles and Paris. A month before her own wedding, she was adopted by Napoléon and became Her Imperial Highness Princess Stephanie Napoléon and was therewith able to marry into the Baden Family on 6 April 1806, when she said yes to Prince Charles of Baden. Together they had five children; two boys, who died in infancy, and three daughters. A record in writing, found between the boxes of jewels, stated that these sapphire jewels were given to Stephanie by her cousin Hortense de Beauharnais. Such an origin is very likely. In many paintings Hortense, and her mother Empress Josephine, can be seen wearing precious belts. Furthermore, Hortense’s financial papers, which are kept in the Napoléon archive in Paris, give evidence of her fortune between 1817 and 1837, the year she passed away. They show that she left Paris in 1816 with little money, but a lot of jewellery. After Stephanie’s death in 1860 the sapphire parure described as ‘necklace, pendant, earrings, 7 pins and a belt’ was inherited by Stephanie’s second daughter, Josephine, Princess of Hohenzollern Sigmaringen. Under Napoléon’s court, belts decorated with precious stones were part of any jewellery parure, as fashion dictated that the waist was very high on dresses and court ladies needed a belt which was placed just under the décolleté. It seems the belt was remodelled into a bandeau-tiara and a bracelet by Princess Josephine, who died in 1900, aged 83. In her will, she left the sapphires (necklace, bandeau-tiara, earrings, pendants and bracelet) to her eldest son, Léopold (1835-1905). At this point, Stephanie’s sapphire parure was joined by another spectacular sapphire jewel: a crown with detachable brooches from Queen Maria da Gloria of Portugal (1819-1853).Maria was born in 1819 in Rio, where her family, the Braganza dynasty, took refuge when Napoléon I invaded their kingdom of Portugal. Her father Pedro, King of Portugal and 1st Emperor of Brazil, abdicated the crown of Portugal in her favour in 1826. Therewith, Maria da Gloria became Queen of Portugal at the age of seven. She died in 1853 after having given birth to 11 children. Her seventh child Infanta Antonia (1845-1913) married Léopold, Prince of Hohenzollern Sigmaringen in 1861, and it is believed that their union united the two sapphire parures.

Global Refugee Forum in Geneva: MEPs to lay out the European Parliament’s views

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 17 dicembre 2019

An EP delegation will travel next week to Geneva to attend the first Global Refugee Forum, aimed at shaping an international response to the challenges of a rising number of refugees.Headed by Malin Björk (GUE/NGL, SE), seven MEPs of the Committees on Development and Civil Liberties and the Sub-Committee on Human Rights will try to ensure continuation of the Parliament’s work on the UN Global compact on refugees, adopted at the end of last year. The EP has closely followed the process of adopting the UN Global Compacts on Migration and on Refugees since their beginnings more than three years ago.Convened at the ministerial level, the Global Refugee Forum, from 16 to 18 December, is an opportunity to translate the principle of international responsibility-sharing into concrete action. The key priorities are easing pressure on host countries, enhancing refugee self-reliance, expanding access to third-country solutions, and supporting conditions in countries of origin for return in safety and dignity.
MEPs will take part in debates prior to the Global Refugee Forum, and in the conference itself, through participation in the official programme, in spotlight sessions and other events and by arranging bilateral meetings with different stakeholders. These activities should serve to advance Parliament’s activities in support of international human rights law, its legislative role in the European Union on issues related to forced displacement and asylum, and in shaping the EU’s external action in supporting refugees and host communities through development and humanitarian assistance.

Christie’s Geneva: The first dedicated Rolex auction session

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 6 aprile 2017

rolexGeneva will dedicate the afternoon session of its Important Watches auction on 15 May entirely to Rolex by offering 116 watches of 55 different references, retracing the history of this watchmaker from the 1930s to the latest models introduced to the market. This is the largest gathering of Rolex timepieces any auction house has ever offered in one single afternoon, with estimates ranging from CHF/US$2,000 to CHF/US$ 500,000 and we are delighted to take young as well as established collectors and watch enthusiasts on a discovery tour:
A new discovery and entirely fresh to the market with only two previous owners, the Rolex gold 6264 Paul Newman tropical lemon dial is a watch that almost nobody knew existed until recently. What really sets the pulse racing when one is first confronted with this watch is the realization that both the outer minute/fifths of a second ring and all three subsidiary dials have tropicalized from black to an even rich chocolate brown. This incredible tropicalization comes on top of the fact that the dial is an extremely rare variant in its own right. The so-called “lemon” Paul Newman refers to the pale hue of the background colour, very few examples are known and the shade can vary from pale straw to almost yellow. Only four examples of the 18K gold reference 6264 are known publically with a lemon dial with white printed subsidiary numerals, of these four, one other example is known to be tropicalized. Estimate: CHF/US$500,000 – 800,000. (photo: rolex)

International cooperation between the IEC and eCl@ss e. V.

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 19 novembre 2016

Geneva, Switzerland/Cologne, Germany – The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) the world’s foremost organization that prepares and publishes globally relevant International Standards for all electric and Geneva, Switzerlandelectronic devices and systems supports all forms of conformity assessment and administers four Conformity Assessment Systems that certify that components, equipment and systems, and eCl@ss e. V., the industry association providing the classification and description system eCl@ss, have signed a cooperation agreement which aims to facilitate the automatic transfer of shared content between the IEC Common Data Dictionaries (CDD) and eCl@ss dictionaries. The cooperation between the IEC and eCl@ss e. V. centres on the requirements of international and digital information exchange based on globally implemented Standards of the IEC. In the framework of the project “d-m@p,” experts from the IEC and eCl@ss e. V. are developing a mapping system that makes product data characteristics and attributes reciprocally readable. As digitization proceeds, companies are increasingly faced with the challenge of electronic data exchange. Under this Cooperation Agreement the content for mapping belongs to IEC 61987, lndustrial-process measurement and control – Data structures and elements in process equipment catalogues; IEC 61360, Standard data element types with associated classification scheme for electric components; and eCl@ss Segment 27: Electric engineering, automation, process control engineering. For the benefit of eCl@ass and IEC CDD users, common content shall be identified and easily accessible in a harmonized form.Markus Reigl, head of the central department of technical regulation and standardization at Siemens AG, explains: “Market-leading companies have recognized that normatively structured product data, unambiguously classified and accompanied by a comprehensive description of characteristics, is the lever by which to advance digitization in highly diverse applications in such areas as B2B, Industry 4.0, and smart buildings.”
“This agreement means that classifications and product descriptions will conform to both current IEC International Standards and eCl@ss properties. Mapping and long-term harmonization of content overlap will benefit end-users through reduced misunderstandings in interpretation and in the use of product properties,” said IEC Technical Officer Matei Cocimarov. With over 40 000 groups and more than 17 000 characteristics, the eCl@ss standard provides companies with a means of product data communication that is internationally recognized and free of media discontinuity. Already, more than 3 300 companies worldwide are convinced of the advantages and are using the eCl@ss standard. The cooperation with the IEC underscores the importance and steady further development of eCl@ss as an international and sector-independent standard for product data and classification.
The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is the world’s leading organization that prepares and publishes globally relevant International Standards for all electric and electronic devices and systems. It brings together 169 countries, representing 99.1% of the world population and 99.2% of world electricity generation. More than 20 000 experts cooperate on the global IEC platform and many more in each member country. They ensure that products work everywhere safely and efficiently with each other. The IEC also supports all forms of conformity assessment and administers four Conformity Assessment Systems that certify that components, equipment and systems used in homes, offices, healthcare facilities, public spaces, transportation, manufacturing, explosive environments and during energy generation conform to them.

International Committee of the Red Cross, World Jewish Congress to hold commemorative event drawing lessons from Holocaust

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 24 aprile 2015

ginevraGENEVA the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the World Jewish Congress (WJC) will host a commemorative event in Geneva, Switzerland on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camps. The conference “Remembering the Shoah: The ICRC and the International Community’s Efforts in Responding to Genocide and Protecting Civilians” will provide a forward-looking perspective on the international community’s efforts to protect civilians and prevent atrocities.Ahead of the gathering, an exhibition about the ICRC during the Holocaust, showcasing relevant material from the ICRC archives, will be opened at the Humanitarium in Geneva.Following will be speeches by ICRC President Peter Maurer and WJC President Ronald S. Lauder, and a panel discussion moderated by WJC CEO Robert Singer and including President Maurer, the American Holocaust historian Deborah Lipstadt and the Canadian physician, writer, and humanitarian activist James Orbinski. The event will be attended by senior members of Geneva’s diplomatic corps and reflect on the international community’s failure to respond vigorously to the Nazi mass murder of Jews during World War II.“We hope that this important conference will allow us to learn from the past and help ensure that humanitarian organizations such as the ICRC can fulfill their critical role in preventing genocide from ever happening again,” declared WJC President Lauder.
The conference will also reflect on how legal and political tools to respond to large-scale killings have developed since the Holocaust.During World War II, the ICRC, headquartered in Geneva, was the principal humanitarian institution maintaining communications with both the Allied and Axis powers. While the ICRC did provide assistance and protection to allied prisoners of war held by Nazi Germany, it could not do the same for Jewish deportees as Berlin refused all humanitarian requests to help Jewish victims. At the same time, the ICRC did not publicly denounce the deportation of Jews to concentration camps. In 1995, the then-president of the ICRC, Cornelio Sommaruga, apologized, stating: “Our failure to speak out at that time was a moral defeat.”
The World Jewish Congress (WJC) is the international organization representing Jewish communities in 100 countries to governments, parliaments and international organizations.

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 4 Maggio 2012

Amsterdam, (PRNewswire) Dutch Medical Brands receives first European Class IIa Medical Device Status Instead of traditional treatment with antibiotics, bladder and urinary tract infections can be cured with cranberry capsules, without known side effects. Dutch company Medical Brands has obtained a Class IIa Medical Device Status for its patented Cranberry-Active capsule, making it the first and only cranberry-based product in Europe which has a proven medical claim. Turny Evo from Autoadapt is a Unique Solution That Helps Drivers and Passengers

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 9 marzo 2012

Rear-facing infant car seat

Stenkullen, Sweden, (PRNewswire) In order to make it easier for a driver seated in a wheelchair, the Turny Evo swivels the car seat out of the car and lowers it to the height of the wheelchair. The user transfers to the car seat by sliding over and is comfortably lifted into the car by the Turny Evo. After a successful year with the passenger side solution a driver side version of the Turny Evo is now shown during the 82nd International Motor Show in Geneva. The streamline design of cars today have made more harm than good for those who have trouble getting in and out of the car. The tight design leaves very little room to swivel a seat out of the car, an issue the design engineers at Autoadapt solved with a unique customizable path of movement. This makes it possible to make optimum use of the space in the doorway and creates more room for the user. Furthermore it means that every installation is tailored to user and vehicle, which gives the user the positive effect to be able to choose from more car models than previously possible.
