Governor Newsom Makes California the First State to Ban the Sale and Manufacture of New Fur

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 15 ottobre 2019

The law would outlaw the sale and manufacture of new items made from fur animals including, mink, rabbit and coyote. There are exceptions for used fur garments, fur that is used for religious purposes, leather products, deerskin, sheepskin and goat skin.Assemblywoman Laura Friedman (D- Glendale) authored the bill last December after realizing the overwhelming evidence of cruelty in an industry that is difficult to regulate due to the globalized nature of fur.AB 44 was introduced following sales bans in the California cities of West Hollywood, Berkeley, San Francisco, and most recently – Los Angeles. The Sherman Oaks based group Animal Hope in Legislation led the way for the Los Angeles Ban and is also a co-sponsor on the statewide bill.“There is no humane way to skin an animal for their fur. And absolutely no reason for an animal to suffer so horribly for the sake of fashion,” said Marc Ching, President of Animal Hope in Legislation. “The passage of this landmark piece of legislation shows that as a society we are progressing towards a more compassionate future.”The West Hollywood, Berkeley and San Francisco Bans have gone into effect and the Los Angeles law will go into effect January 2021. The statewide bill provides a phase out period for retailers and manufacturers and will go into effect on January 1, 2023.Coyotes, chinchillas, foxes, mink, rabbits, and other fur-bearing animals are subjected to unregulated killing methods which cause unimaginable terror and agony. Animals are gassed, electrocuted, or have their necks broken, while anal or genital electrocution is a common method for killing animals used for fur. Furs from dogs, cats, raccoons, rodents and other animals are often undisclosed or intentionally mislabeled by manufacturers, and fur products are often preserved with carcinogenic chemicals.Public supporters of the bill have included Los Angeles city mayor Eric Garcetti, celebrities including Alicia Silverstone and Kat Von D, as well as retailers such as Hugo Boss, H&M, Zara and Diane Von Fustenberg.

Governor Parson Joins Walgreens to Launch Safe Medication Disposal Kiosks in Missouri

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 14 dicembre 2018

Walgreens announced today it is expanding its first of a kind safe medication disposal program throughout Missouri to allow individuals to dispose of unwanted medication in a drugstore setting year-round at no cost. Governor Mike Parson will join Walgreens at one of its St. Louis locations to launch safe medication disposal kiosks now available at 14 select Walgreens pharmacies across Missouri.“We are excited to bring a year-round opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted medications in a convenient pharmacy setting at no cost to Missourians. Every day will now be drug take back day in Missouri,” said Marcel Naddaf, Walgreens regional healthcare director in Missouri. “Our kiosk program is one of several steps Walgreens has taken to address the opioid epidemic in along with expanding access to naloxone and installing high secure time delay safes to secure controlled substances in our pharmacies.”Safe medication disposal kiosks accept unwanted, unused or expired prescriptions, including controlled substances such as opioids and over-the-counter medications. Since the program’s inception, Walgreens safe medication disposal kiosks have collected and safely disposed of more than 400 tons of medications.Working in partnership with AmerisourceBergen, Pfizer and Prime Therapeutics, Walgreens has installed safe medication disposal kiosks in more than 1,000 of its stores, with plans to expand to 1,500 stores by spring 2019. Since the program began, more than 400 tons of medications, which is more than the weight of a 777 jet, has been collected and safely disposed of.The program makes the disposal of medications easier and more convenient while helping to reduce the misuse of medications and the rise in overdose deaths. The kiosks will be available during regular pharmacy hours and offer one of the best ways to ensure medications are not accidentally used or intentionally misused by someone else.Walgreens has worked state-by-state since the launch of its safe medication disposal program in 2016. In the few remaining states, Walgreens is available and eager to work with regulators to help update rules to allow drug take-back kiosks to be available in the drugstore setting.Additionally, Walgreens is able to dispense naloxone in all of its Missouri pharmacies without requiring a prescription. The company has also installed high secure time delay safes in all its Missouri pharmacies to secure controlled substances frequently targeted in criminal activity. By storing these medications in high secure safes, Walgreens has eliminated the immediate availability of these items, while still able to meet the needs of its patients.

One Choice is No Choice: Florida Governor Rick Scott Denies Critical Healthcare Coverage to Those Living with HIV

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 10 luglio 2018

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the nation’s largest non-profit HIV/AIDS healthcare provider and largest global AIDS organization, is blasting Florida Governor Rick Scott for denying critical healthcare coverage to those living with HIV/AIDS. The organization is calling out Scott in response to he and the state’s Medicaid officials’ failure to renew an HIV care contract with AHF’s Positive Healthcare— a respected non-profit which has been providing critical health insurance coverage for people living with HIV in Florida since 1999. AHF says the state’s move will recklessly disrupt care for a vulnerable population of nearly 2,000 Florida HIV patients. In late April, Florida Medicaid officials announced the awarding of Medicaid contracts, worth up to $90 billion dollars, to five for-profit managed care plans, excluding several other companies, including Positive Healthcare (PHC), the only non-profit healthcare provider that offers insurance coverage for the critical, sensitive healthcare needs of those living with HIV. As a result of the initial decision, several of the denied agencies, including PHC, filed formal protests with Florida’s Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA), which manages the state’s Medicaid program, all challenging the state’s decision, citing severe defects in the RFP and decision-making process. Following the submitted protests, state Medicaid officials met with each of the denied agencies, and subsequently have provided settlements with a select list of the for-profit providers, while continuing to shut out PHC, the only non-profit agency whose focus is on providing care to thousands of clients living with HIV in Florida, that have relied on this critical coverage to get the necessary care they need, by the doctors of their choice, to live a healthy life. “Given the increased number of those now living with HIV in Florida, it is deplorable that Governor Scott has continued to play with people’s lives, while padding the pockets of a small group of for-profit companies,” said Donna Stidham, Chief of Managed Care for AHF. “Many of these patients, currently covered by PHC, have been seeing their doctor for years, even decades, and are thriving in care. These same patients will suffer disruption of treatment and can suffer substandard care if they are simply dumped into the general patient population, or if their care is jobbed out by huge, for-profit insurance companies for treatment by a family medicine doctor or general practitioner without HIV expertise.” While Scott and his cronies continue to play “business as usual” politics, the 2,000 HIV patients currently covered by PHC have become vulnerable to maintaining the care they critically need to stay alive, as they will be forced to choose for-profit companies that don’t cover the doctors they have come to rely on and trust for over a decade of quality, life-saving care. AHF and the numerous community supporters across the state that have come out in support of PHC implore Governor Scott to put people first and not big for-profit businesses and give this vulnerable population a choice.Scott’s irresponsible actions and lack of transparency occurs while the State of Florida, and specifically Miami-Dade and Broward counties, continue to rise as the nation’s epicenter of the HIV epidemic. PHC currently offers coverage to those living with HIV in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, which rank #1 and #2, nationally for reported cases of new HIV diagnosis.
