A Revealing Moment in Earth’s Recent History

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 4 maggio 2020

There is much to learn from this tragic moment. The Coronavirus has brought us an unbearable level of death and suffering. At the same time, the pandemic has revealed so much about the impact of human behavior on the environment, as well as our own health. If we are wise, we should try to understand the truths this virus has uncovered. The outbreaks of COVID-19 around the world showcase the impact of human mobility. In earlier eras, it would have unthinkable that a sickness could spread around the globe in a matter of weeks, if not days. Yet, that’s where we are today. It’s a tragedy for human beings, but we should also note that comparable pandemics could wipe out animals and plants worldwide. Monoculture and mobility don’t mix well. We should prepare ourselves to avert an agricultural catastrophe. The pandemic further reveals the incredible impact of human activity on the environment. Just look at photos of cities like Los Angeles, typically drenched in toxic smog, looking like pristine Alpine vistas. That’s what happens when millions of cars stay off the road for a few days.COVID-19 lockdowns can teach us so much about the grinding effects of consumption on the earth. When people ask, “Why bother with sustainability? What difference does it make to drive a little less and use less plastic?” show them a photo of Los Angeles during the pandemic. That’s your answer: Even a little sustainability can make a big difference. The temporary smog reductions we’re seeing also underscore how petroleum affects the environment. Air quality better, but we are also witnessing an unprecedented collapse in the oil market. Billions of gallons of crude oil are sitting in tanks and ships because there is no demand for the commodity. This spectacle might tell us something about how we drive the market and the market drives us—and how perhaps we could get by with less oil consumption. Finally, the pandemic reveals the power of people working together to solve problems. Here in Italy, we have witnessed many acts of personal courage and selfless collaboration. Our health care workers and others who have come together to fight the disease show us that we, too, can cooperate and effect environmental change. Our work never stops, as the articles in this newsletter demonstrate. We are busy certifying seafood and agricultural producers for sustainable practices. The conservation projects we sponsor are starting to show results. New standards, such as one for sea salt product, broaden our portfolio. As always, there is so much more to be done.

Where is covid-19 in a list of worst pandemics in history?

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 29 aprile 2020

Never before have we seen a situation where almost the entire global economy has been under lockdown conditions. The covid-19 virus has caused something without precedent in economic history. Having said that, how severe is this pandemic relative to those seen through history? Or how severe could it end up being? To answer this we’ve looked at 24 pandemics and epidemics over the last 2000 years where the historical literature suggests at least 100,000 fatalities. We have then calculated this as a proportion of the world’s population at the time. We appreciate that the world’s population has grown substantially over time and100,000 was a much higher percentage at the start of this sample period than at the end. Nevertheless, this criterion covered virtually all of the major outbreaks seen in the early years of this analysis partly because these viruses were more deadly back then with more rudimentary healthcare and poorer general health. Obviously there is much debate about how many people died from the various viruses, especially those further back through time. However, we have provided the best estimates based on comparing various sources. At the end we’ve included a table detailing the specific numbers for each outbreak. For modern context we’ve added MERS, SARS and Ebola to this even though they don’t qualify for the below
analysis given their relatively low fatality tally.
For covid-19 to become one of the 20 most severe pandemics in history on this measure, global fatalities would have to rise from the 178,000 today to just over 1 million. To get into the worst 15, it would need to rise to 5 million. Top 10 would require c.38.5 million and the top 5 over 210.5 million. Fifth on this list at the moment is the Spanish Flu (1918-1919) which killed as many as 50 million people globally (some estimates are lower, some higher) when the population was less than a quarter of what it is today.
In a global population of 7.7 billion, the Diamond Princess model would suggest that 1.56 billion would end up being infected with around 750 million showing symptoms. This could lead to global fatalities at 17.6 million (0.23%) before controls started to have an impact. In terms of absolute numbers, this would be the 5th- highest death toll in history, but as a percentage of the global population it would be ‘only’ the 13th worst of our 24 pandemics/epidemics.In conclusion, this is far from the worst pandemic in history, but its eventual likely lowly place relative to its historical peers in terms of severity will owe much to the
lockdowns that probably wouldn’t have occurred in the past, mitigation going forward and perhaps to a future vaccine. Our intolerance in today’s society to anything close to the levels of fatalities seen through history, and our globally connected world, mean that modern pandemics are likely to consistently be treated in the manner of covid-19 going forward. As such we will probably have another global lockdown in our lifetimes, when the next pandemic passes through. Over the last century (after the Spanish Flu) if you correctly exclude MERS, Ebola and SARS – which killed fewer than 15,000 people
in total and were highly regional – we’ve now had five pandemics (four if you exclude HIV, which is not transmitted in a respiratory manner). The modern precedent has been set. (Copyright © 2020 Deutsche Bank AG)

Debut cliff diving competition adds to Dublin’s rich seaside history

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 3 maggio 2019

While brilliant Brit Hunt can equal his winning streak of six consecutive victories across seasons from 2015 with another first place in Ireland, Romania’s Constantin Popovici proved he has bags of potential from the 27m platform during his debut as a permanent diver in the Philippines. His impressive armstand dive earned the 30-year-old Olympic diver, who strives for qualification for Tokyo 2020, the high score of the day and his first ever World Series podium behind the defending 7-time champion.Title hopefuls such as Mexico’s Jonathan Paredes and Steven LoBue from the US, will have to make a move in order to prevent the King Kahekili Trophy moving beyond reach already at this early stage of the season. In the women’s Australian Iffland continues to be the acme of perfection when it comes to acrobatically launching from 21 metres. The 27-year-old secured her 12th victory in 18 competitions during the season opener in Asia and seems to be facing the strongest competition from Belarusian Yana Nestsiarava and Canada’s Lysanne Richard. Contrary to 2018 runner-up Adriana Jimenez from Mexico, who finished on a disappointing 5th place in the Philippines, the duo managed to keep up with the triple champion.Following three events at the near-rectangular natural pool in Inis Mór on the rugged Aran Islands, the World Series is hosted in Ireland’s capital city for the first time.
Dún Laoghaire, located to the south of the city centre, is an iconic seaside town with over 200 years of history. The town features the iconic ’40 Foot’ for those who fancy a quick swim before the real thing, Ireland’s National Maritime Museum, the People’s Park and the dlr LexIcon Library, which has a view that will only be rivalled by the platforms, which will stand at 21 and 27 meters.Located on Carlisle Pier, the divers will have a panoramic view over Dublin Bay from the platforms, with Poolbeg Lighthouse, Howth Head, Dalkey Island and the whole of Dún Laoghaire in the immediate vicinity. Walking the East Pier is the main tourist activity in Dún Laoghaire Harbour and thousands of people are expected to cheer the 24 athletes to extraordinary feats from there. It took 42 years to construct the harbour, from 1817 to 1859, and it will take the divers 3 seconds from the platforms to the water below to add their magic to the area’s history.

Eurowings: largest growth in the history of German air traffic

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 12 marzo 2018

COLOGNE/BERLIN. 30 additional planes, 70,000 more flights and eight million additional passengers: in 2018, Eurowings is still Europe’s fastest-growing airline. “At Eurowings, we are currently handling the largest growth that German air traffic has ever experienced,” says Thorsten Dirks, Member of the Lufthansa Group Executive Board and CEO of Eurowings. No other German airline has put so many planes into operation in such a short period of time. Dirks emphasises how important it is that this growth also be profitable: “Last year, we didn’t just grow by 77 percent. We also reached profitability one year earlier than projected. Eurowings is also growing at record rates when it comes to staff. Including the successful integration of Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter (LGW), Eurowings has hired 2,000 new crew members in just a few months. And staffing levels in other areas are also being increased to manage the leap in growth to becoming the third-largest low-cost airline in Europe. “In a very short period of time, we hired almost 90 percent of the crew members that we need for our fleet expansion in the current year. Growing at this speed is very stressful, but also inspiring,” says Dirks.
After opening a series of stations in Vienna, Munich, Salzburg and Palma, Eurowings is facing its next big growth spurt in the upcoming 2018 summer flight schedule. The low-cost airline of Lufthansa Group will be offering its customers more than 11,500 additional flights compared to the beginning of the 2017/18 winter flight schedule – an increase of 60 percent. Eurowings is expanding services at all its stations (see table below), in some cases with growth rates of 100 percent or more. The airline has already become the leading carrier at four German airports: in Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart and Hamburg.
The biggest Eurowings station in Düsseldorf will become an important cornerstone of the growth strategy in 2018, not just for short and medium haul routes, but increasingly also for affordable direct connections on long-haul routes. Soon, the Eurowings fleet will be expanding to 40 aircraft at the airport of the North Rhine-Westphalian capital alone, with an accompanying massive increase in the range of flights offered to customers. Roughly 7,500 monthly flights in Düsseldorf, along with a large number of new destinations, including Copenhagen, Stuttgart and Sylt. The long-haul routes offered from the Düsseldorf airport are also being expanded significantly. To begin with, three long-haul jets will be deployed on attractive routes as of April 2018, predominantly to the US: to Fort Myers and Miami, and to the global metropolis of New York City.
Eurowings will be offering its newly developed BIZclass for the first time on these flights. The first full Business Class of a low-cost airline will premiere this week at the ITB in Berlin, the world’s largest travel fair. Highlights include a comfortable seat that becomes a 2-meter bed at the touch of a button. By the end of the year, Eurowings Group will focus its intercontinental operations in Düsseldorf, with seven long-haul jets and 140 monthly long-haul flights taking off for attractive long-distance destinations in North America and the Caribbean. Eurowings long-haul jets will also be taking off from Munich as of Summer 2018. Three Airbus A330 aircraft will be serving predominantly Caribbean destinations such as Cuba (Varadero), Jamaica (Montego Bay) and the Dominican Republic (Punta Cana). “The strong growth in the long-haul sector emphasizes our goal of maintaining and expanding our pioneering role in low-cost long-haul,” says Dirks. The significantly expanded long-haul fleet will help make this a reality. Factoring in the Belgian carrier Brussels Airlines, which has been part of Eurowings Group since 2017, some 20 long-haul jets will be operational by the end of the year.

History of painters and theatre

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 22 agosto 2017

history of paintersThe exhibits shown in this book are in English. Were sent in the original language from the press offices of the authors and the museums and art galleries. It ‘a small part of all the exhibits that are presented each year in the world. My regret was that he did not have the opportunity to be able to quote a higher number to give the reader the opportunity to wander artistic horizons wider. I gave precedence to the paintings but I have not ruled out the picture because, in my opinion, are both representative forms of art. The eye of the painter is addressed to the canvas and the model and the photographer sets the image through the lens. Both tried to reproduce nature in all its forms.
If a group of trees, mountains, water and houses that we call beautiful landscape is not for himself, but for me, for my own pleasure, for your pleasure, for the idea or the feeling we got. I think I can say that a landscape painter who cannot translate a feeling can’t be an artist. Well I know that the human imagination can conceive with a singular effort for a moment the nature without man and that exists in space but all this without a contemplative would not make sense. The artists who want to express the nature without the feeling it inspires kill the man who thinks and feels.
Disciples of different masters depict all very well and almost everyone forgets that a natural place not purchase value by the feeling that the artist will transmits. Nearly all take the dictionary of art for art: They copy a dictionary word believing copy a poem. But the poem does not ever copy. It wants to be composed. So open a window and the whole space included in the square of the window, trees, sky and home, take them to the value of a beautiful poem and done. Others go further: in their eyes a study is a framework.
In turn, the sculpture is a unique art that is lost in the mists of time. Since ancient times, it is manifested by the great works that still leave amazed. In front of a subject taken from nature and represented by the sculpture the man does not feel embarrassed while a painting with its abstract nature and paradoxical can upset him. History of painters and Theatre

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 22 agosto 2017

History of painters and theatreNinth book Kindle Edition. Angelo Capasso in “Notes from the ocean” of Chris Davis wrote: “Painting is the producer of a totalling effort that includes every part of the body and it is this particular characteristic, as ancient as the origins of paintings itself that distinguished it from every other expressive language.
Every painting is the distillation of the continuum of movements that involves both upper and lower limbs, as the agents of what the sense registers and the mind manipulates. The analogy between painting and dance is prominently evident in the origin of painting where it aquires a ritual character by virtue of being a form of movement that leaves it trace in both time and space.”
From this perspective, I can say that the painters were able to convey a message of great power and fascination that has managed to overcome their time and become immortal. There are, of course, differences in the painting but the spirit is common. We observing a painting that dates back several centuries before we can recognize the value of art that does not bend to the logic of the time but it makes us feel closer to the artist, to understand and to share his feelings.
It ‘nice to establish a continuity of thought and ideals through painting so is poetry, fiction, and other fine arts such as dance, sculpture and music. They are expressions of our thoughts that ennoble us and redeem our wickedness, our pettiness and cruelty to our fellow man and nature. There are great painters who have given us strong emotions but in my books I want to accompany them with the many who are little known, off their ardour in the space of one or at most two generations yet have left their traces that now because I want to propose, in my opinion, I think it is important their contribution.
“Every painter – writes Capasso – is potentially a dancer and shares an intuitive sensuality and awareness of movement and form.
A ritualistic dance defies rime and toys with Death. Every painter, in own way, ha challenged mortality, despite the awareness of the limited weapons at his disposal the brush, the canvas and the paints. Caravaggio, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Picasso, Dalì, De Chirico, Bacon, Jackson Pollock and Warhol are some of those belonging to this heroic mythology. Each painter has pitred himself against God trying to prevail with the timing, the speed, the nimbleness of his choices and the unpredictability of the results.” (history of painters)

Time collection a tutto colore per i nuovi orologi U.S. Polo Assn

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 4 novembre 2011

Franco Maria Ricci From Marilena Ferrari Foundation

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 11 ottobre 2011

Toronto Wednesday, October 19, 2011 – 5:30pm Robarts Library, University of Toronto Libraries -130 St. George St., The Robarts Library, University of Toronto Libraries, presents the unveiling of the Franco Maria Ricci book collection donated by the Italian Cultural Institute. Free admission.
History of FMR: FMR has a long history that goes back to the genuine Emilia region of the Sixties. FMR is the unique and unmistakably marked product of a man’s fascination. A man who, like Valentino Bompiani and Giulio Einaudi, has taken his place in the history of Italian publishing: Franco Maria Ricci. To the two former men, we owe the words, to him, we owe a different and extraordinary way of looking at images. His first work was a literary text in the strict sense of the term: a reprint of the Manuale Tipografico by Giambattista Bodoni, head of the Stamperia Ducale in Parma during the last decades of the Eighteenth century and creator of elegantly designed types that were much sought-after for their refinement, neatness and readability. The unexpected success of the nine hundred copies of this reprint were decisive for the company’s future success. The predilection for the script’s beauty, for the proportions and harmony of the layout and for everything that goes into the crafting of a book are the founding ideas for FMR’s most famous series in these past forty years: Grand Tour, I segni dell’uomo, Morgana, Quadreria, Luxe calme et volupté, La Biblioteca di Babele, Artefatto, Colletta, Antichi Stati, Parma, Signorie & Principati, La biblioteca blu, Top Symbols and Trademarks of the World, Guide Impossibili, Vaticano…Under these series’ titles there are volumes and formats for both fiction and non-fiction. Black silk drapes the book covers and Fabriano cyan blue paper is the background for the writings of Borges, Barthes, Eco, Calvino, Arbasino, Manganelli… Besides books, in 1982, the FMR magazine was born with its unmistakable black cover and its four-language editions (Italian, French, English and Spanish). The magazine immediately wins the label of most beautiful magazine in the world: the “Black Pearl”, Federico Fellini used to call it. In 2002, thanks to the businesswoman Marilena Ferrari’s passion , FMR joins the Gruppo ART’E. (fmr)

Alabama: Making the Wrong Kind of History

Washington, D.C. , A federal judge in Alabama refused to block the toughest provisions of Alabama’s extreme immigration law, H.B. 56 – the harshest in the nation. The sections that the judge allowed to proceed include: Making it a state crime for an undocumented immigrant to not carry documents required by federal law, requiring police to make a reasonable attempt to determine immigration status for anyone they stop, detain, or arrest when they “reasonably suspect” the individual is illegally in the country, making it a felony for an undocumented immigrant to do business with the state – for instance obtaining water service — and requiring Alabama public school officials to determine if enrolling children were born outside the United States or are children of undocumented immigrants. The following is a statement by Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum: “Just this month the Southern Poverty Law Center gave the state of Alabama an “A” in teaching its children about civil rights history – a history the state of Alabama played a notorious role in shaping. Well, today, the state of Alabama keeps making history in all the wrong ways. U.S. District Judge Sharon Blackburn’s ruling is a sad day in our nation’s history. For the court to allow sections of a law to go into effect in Alabama when they have been found unconstitutional elsewhere is puzzling. This ill-conceived and inhumane law will burden local police departments with responsibilities that belong to the federal government and it will prove to be extremely costly to enforce, and extremely costly to the reputation of Alabama. It will undermine public safety while being a direct affront to our constitutional values. Families will be under siege, parents will be afraid to send their children to school, and workers will be afraid to report to their jobs. In the United States of America, no one should have to be afraid to walk down the street because of the color of their skin. This law is tramples on the civil rights of ALL Alabamans. Let’s not forget who is at fault here: Governor Robert Bentley signed the bill passed by Republican extremists that rule the Alabama legislature. The deficit of leadership in the U.S. Congress and their inaction on immigration reform has let the states run amok with proposals that attack our American values of fairness and equal treatment. Today’s ruling on this stringent immigration law should be a wake-up call for Congress to finally fix the immigration system.

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 22 luglio 2009

emoryNew York until 18/10/09 New Museum 235 Bowery. Two exhibitions An Exhibition Curated by Sam Durant for the New Museum  Some of Emory Douglas’s images are nearly forty years old, but they are still as powerful as when Douglas first created them. They are dangerous pictures, and they were meant to change the world. Emory Douglas was the Revolutionary Artist of the Black Panther Party and subsequently became its Minister of Culture, part of the national leadership.  -Emory Douglas: Black Panther- includes a wide variety of Douglas’s work done while a member of the Black Panther Party. Curated by the Los Angeles artist Sam Durant, whose work often deals with political and cultural subjects in American history, the show includes approximately 165 posters, newspapers, and prints dating from 1967-76. Durant met Emory Douglas in 2002 and began working on a book of Douglas’s work, which resulted in a monograph published in 2007. Two years later Durant curated -Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas- at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, which serves as a model for the exhibition at the New Museum.
In conjunction with the exhibition -Emory Douglas: Black Panther,- the New Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and Groundswell, a community organization, will co-produce a new mural to be installed on 122nd Street and Third Avenue in Harlem, New York City. The mural, titled What We Want, What We Believe, will be a permanent public artwork- and Douglas’s first in New York City. The mural team will consist of up to fifteen teens involved with the New Museum’s G: Class student program and the Studio Museum, the majority of whom will be employed by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development, through the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). Douglas will work with the youth for two weeks, teaching the history of the larger Black Power Movement, conducting master print-making workshops, and leading discussions with youth participants. Over a period of two months, artist educators from the New Museum, the Studio Museum, and Groundswell will provide youth with tutorials on the social and political history that gave rise to the Black Panther Party and the Movement, as well as the history of printmaking and mural painting. A dedication of the finished mural is anticipated in early September 2009.  The presentation of -Emory Douglas: Black Panther- at the New Museum is organized by Laura Hoptman, Kraus Family Senior Curator, with Amy Mackie, Curatorial Assistant. America’s National Parks

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 18 aprile 2009

The White House  They are among our Nation’s most precious treasures. During National Park Week, we celebrate  these spaces and commit to protecting them for future generations of Americans.  National Parks bring together Americans of all backgrounds  and help us understand the story of America. From the Lincoln  Memorial and Ellis Island to the Great Smoky Mountains and  Yellowstone, National Parks attract visitors from across the  country and from all walks of life. The grandeur and simplicity  of these areas inspire visitors no matter their personal  stories. National Parks also help Americans learn more about  our shared history. From the Prehistoric Trackways National  Monument to the Civil War battlefield at Gettysburg, National  Parks allow Americans to explore our Nation’s past and to  understand events that occurred over the long course of our history.  Our system of National Parks is entrusted to each  generation of Americans. We have an obligation to our children  to keep these spaces pristine. As citizen stewards, Americans  can participate in efforts in their communities to preserve  National Parks, and support policies that achieve this end.  My Administration continues to advocate for initiatives that  protect and expand National Parks. The American Recovery  and Reinvestment Act promotes conservation and creates new  job opportunities in National Parks, and the Omnibus Public  Land Management Act designates thousands of miles of trails  for the National Trails System, protects more than 1,000 miles  of rivers, and secures millions of acres of wilderness.  This week we also honor the committed professionals and  volunteers working every day to support the National Parks.  Laboring among towering mountains and broad plains, in city  centers, and along our rivers and seashores, these Americans  deserve thanks for their contributions to current and future  generations. (Barack Obama)
