MEPs call on EU to consider lawsuit against China over Hong Kong

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 20 giugno 2020

Parliament recommends that EU and members states file a case before the International Court of Justice, if the new national security law for Hong Kong is applied. In a resolution adopted on Friday by 565 votes to 34, with 62 abstentions, the European Parliament voted in favour of bringing China before the International Court of Justice over its decision to adopt a new national security law for semi-autonomous Hong-Kong.In the text, MEPs “call on the EU and its Member States to consider, in the event the new security law is applied, filing a case before the International Court of Justice alleging that China’s decision to impose national security legislation on Hong Kong violates the Sino-British Joint Declaration and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).”
They also strongly condemn the new law as an assault on the city’s autonomy, as well as China’s constant and increasing interference in Hong Kong’s internal affairs. MEPs call for the jailed pro-democracy activists and peaceful demonstrators to be released and for charges against them to be dropped. They want to see a UN Special Envoy appointed to deal specifically with the situation in Hong Kong. The European Parliament is greatly concerned by the steady deterioration of civil and political rights, and press freedom in Hong Kong and calls for an independent and impartial investigation into the police’s use of force against pro-democracy protesters. It finally strongly urges EU member states in the Council and the EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell to address the issue of the national security law for Hong Kong as a top priority at the upcoming EU-China Summit on Monday, 22 June, (via video conference) and at the planned EU-China Leaders meeting, as well as other human rights issues, such as the situation of the Uyghurs.

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 27 maggio 2020

China’s attempts to curb Hong Kong protests threaten the city’s status as a financial center

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 24 gennaio 2020

The political crisis that has gripped Hong Kong since March 2019 is far from resolved. The Chinese government’s responses to the protests are undermining the city’s institutional pillars. Hong Kong’s status as a financial gateway is at risk as the city is caught between the differing needs of China’s government and international business, according to MERICS researchers Max J. Zenglein and Maximilian Kärnfelt. The authors of the new MERICS study „Financial hub at risk. How China’s reaction to protests jeopardizes Hong Kong’s status” argue the protest movement and government responses also pose a dilemma for Beijing: China cannot enjoy the benefits of both political control and a liberal economic environment.Hong Kong’s position as a financial hub rests on its high degree of autonomy. The city’s status as a Special Administrative Region has given it the freedom to meet the institutional requirements to remain an international hub for finance and trade. Hong Kong’s freedoms – in particular the rule of law and a lack of capital controls – are thus essential for China as it tries to satisfy its growing appetite for foreign capital. The protests have affected Hong Kong’s economy, causing the city’s first recession since 2009. Hard-hit sectors include retail, restaurants, hospitality, transportation and events – even if the real estate market remains fairly stable for now. The city’s function as an offshore financial center has so far not been affected. There have been no major capital outflows, and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) continues to attract major IPOs. With the listing of Anheuser-Busch’s Asian unit and the secondary listing of Alibaba, it even topped the global ranking of IPO locations last year. But the city’s ability to attract new companies and talent has suffered – ever more expatriate executives, for example, are relocating their families elsewhere. The authors argue that China has no credible alternative to Hong Kong in the short to medium term. Hong Kong’s role as China’s gateway to global financial markets is currently unique. The city provides China access to foreign exchange and is helping to integrate the country’s financial system into global markets. Shanghai and Shenzhen are in no position to take over because of their strict capital controls, and the absence of both a freely convertible currency and the rule of law. Alternative offshore centers like Macau, Singapore or London are at best complementary hubs – cities beyond mainland China have considerable political and economic constraints. However, the crisis has the potential to undermine the institutions upon which Hong Kong’s liberal economy relies. The authors look at different reasons why Hong Kong’s status as a popular offshore financial center (OFC) is at risk: escalating economic and financial crisis, Hong Kong’s need for international recognition of its special trading status, political pressure on companies that could erode economic freedom, and Beijing’s hardline measures that could undermine the city’s independent judiciary.
According to a MERICS survey of experts and professionals in Hong Kong, a majority of 71.2 per cent expect the city to remain functional even as protests continue, 22.9 per cent foresee business as usual as protests fade and stability returns, and only six per cent worry that a deterioration in stability could cause significant, lasting damage.Zenglein and Kärnfelt conclude with a warning: Growing distrust in Hong Kong’s institutions jeopardizes its position as an offshore financial center. Beijing’s hardline course threatens to inflict substantial and irreparable damage on the city’s institutions. As a result, Chinese pressure for accelerated convergence with the mainland’s political and legal system has reached a critical point. Given that Beijing has no credible alternative financial gateway, the premature demise of Hong Kong’s global function would be costly for China. In that event, European businesses would face the challenge of losing the institutional convenience Hong Kong provides. You can read the full report „Financial hub at risk. How China’s reaction to protests jeopardizes Hong Kong’s status” here.

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 28 novembre 2019

Hong Kong in revolt

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 24 novembre 2019

The cover of Economist this week considers the unrest in Hong Kong, and notes that it is not the only part of China’s periphery to resent the heavy hand of the Communist Party. Mercifully, massive bloodshed has so far been avoided in the territory. Public support for the protesters—even the bomb-throwing radicals—remains strong, and the protests seem likely to continue. Meanwhile, Tibet and Xinjiang are quiet, but only because they have been terrorised into silence. And one of the protesters’ slogans, “Today’s Hong Kong, tomorrow’s Taiwan”, resonates with its intended audience of Taiwanese voters, few of whom want their rich, democratic island to be swallowed up by the dictatorship next door. Seventy years after Mao Zedong’s guerrillas seized power, the Communist Party’s struggle to establish the China it wants is far from over. The party cannot win lasting assent to its rule by force, or the threat of force, alone. (by The Economist)

American Lending Center Expands EB-5 Opportunities in Hong Kong

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 24 ottobre 2019

American Lending Center (ALC), a leading EB-5 regional center, has strengthened its presence and increased resources in Hong Kong amid burgeoning interest in the EB-5 investment opportunities. ALC will support new investors and continue laying groundwork to establish themselves in the area as Hong Kong develops into a key Asian EB-5 market.“We have increased our Hong Kong footprint after noticing growing demand for uniquely successful EB-5 investment opportunities,” stated John Shen, ALC’s Chief Executive Officer. “Just as we expanded our operations in Taiwan, Vietnam and India, ALC is excited to lead industry growth in the region by ensuring the EB-5 program remains a sustainable pathway of investment and immigration.” While EB-5 interest has grown steadily in Hong Kong over the last 10 years, the number of EB-5 visas issued to Hong Kong residents increased sharply in 2019. EB5 Investors Magazine chose to host their first ever EB-5 Expo in Hong Kong on October 19th, further indicating the industry’s movement in that direction. ALC will join this conference as a Platinum sponsor and John Shen will be a panelist, discussing the “The Future of EB-5.” ALC’s predominant focus on placing EB-5 investments exclusively in the senior loan structure has created the best capital protection for investors throughout the EB-5 process. Its rigorous construction management system led by highly successful third parties, in coordination with the senior loan operation, has driven the consistent success of its investments. As a result, ALC has successfully provided over 350 million dollars to American ventures and created over 10,000 full-time jobs throughout the US. It has achieved a 100 percent construction success rate and fully refunded the EB-5 investors who obtained permanent green cards.

Appello ai rivoluzionari di Hong Kong: Fermatevi

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 5 ottobre 2019

Incoraggiati a morire?
(Vincenzo Donvito, presidente Aduc)

Il Nord Est alla “conquista” di Hong Kong

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 26 giugno 2019

Heficed Is Expanding in Asia With a New PoP in Hong Kong

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 23 giugno 2019

After Amazon Web Services launched their new data centre in Hong Kong this April, all the major players of the network infrastructure industry are now present in the city. Several niche service providers – such as Heficed – are also gaining their footing in the Asia Pacific region due to the demand for more flexible and custom network infrastructure solutions. The global market of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), valued at $15.20 billion in 2016, is expected to develop to $182.27 billion by 2025 at an annual growth rate of 28.2%. Thanks to such a healthy growth percentage, it is no surprise that certain cities are establishing themselves as prime locations for IaaS companies to expand within a given region – Hong Kong being an example of such a city in the Asia Pacific.
Even though the behemoths of the tech world dominate both the Asian and the global network infrastructure markets, a constant need for more personal, flexible, and customizable solutions creates niches for smaller providers to thrive in.Heficed, one of the market leaders offering IP address, dedicated server and cloud solutions, serves as an example of this trend. As the company launched its Hong Kong dedicated server location this month, Heficed’s CEO Vincentas Grinius commented on the reasons behind the new server location:“The decision of adding Hong Kong as one of our server locations was made to strengthen our positions in the Asia Pacific region. The growing demand for dedicated servers and IP address services creates various opportunities for companies like Heficed that offer custom and flexible network engineering solutions.” As global and Asia Pacific network infrastructure markets are steadily growing, specific locations are at the forefront of this growth. New laws passed by China are also influencing the unprecedented location growth of Hong Kong as a top location.“A set of laws enacted by the Chinese government in 2017 required that non-Chinese companies operating in the country would store their data locally, and this worked as an extra catalyst for the above-mentioned market growth,” added Vincentas Grinius. While the Chinese businesses are using Hong Kong as a point of departure for international expansion, the non-Chinese companies are attracted to developing their infrastructure for the Chinese market without having to set up their physical infrastructure in mainland China. The state of the global, regional and Chinese IaaS markets suggests that service providers of various scale will continue to see Hong Kong as a top server location for developing their business in the APAC region.

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 23 novembre 2018

Hong Kong’s First-Ever Solo Exhibition on Vincent van Gogh Eye of the Genius Exhibition Opens to Public from 23 – 28 November at the HKCEC.
Christie’s is proud to host Hong Kong’s first-ever solo exhibition on Vincent van Gogh, one of the greatest artists of all time whose creative expressions profoundly influenced subsequent generations across cultures and genres. Entitled Eye of the Genius, the exhibition will showcase seven exclusive works by van Gogh, all painted in the last five years of his life. Van Gogh’s artistic genius was marked by the intensity of his vision, his wonderful sense of colour and his extraordinarily innovative and bold style, which together have become the inspiration of many pop-culture phenomena to this day. Though van Gogh’s painting career was cut short with his untimely death, he filled the final decade of his life with unique masterpieces that would be an enduring source of inspiration, heralding the development of Fauvism, Expressionism and Modernism schools of the 20th Century.
Rebecca Wei, President, Christie’s Asia: “Christie’s Asia is honoured to host the first ever solo exhibition of this celebrated artist by collaborating with private collectors in the region who have generously loaned Van Gogh’s masterpieces to give art lovers in Hong Kong a glimpse of his genius.”

Three Leading European Art Dealers to Curate Pop-Up Exhibition at Hong Kong Convention Centre

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 28 marzo 2018

Hong Kong – As part of Christie’s ongoing commitment to facilitating the public exhibition and sale of works of art from a broad variety of categories to global audiences, a special exhibition will be staged from 25 to 29 May by three leading European dealers at the Hong Kong Convention Centre, during Christie’s spring season of activities.
Bowman Sculpture specialises in works by leading artists, ranging from the 19th century through to the present day, and is the foremost gallery in the world for sculpture by Auguste Rodin (French, 1840-1917).
The exhibition will also present Le frère et la soeur (Brother and Sister) (conceived in 1890), a rare collaboration between Rodin and the famous female sculptor Camille Claudel, who was Rodin’s lover and studio assistant. Madly in love but unable to abandon his partner of many years Rose Beuret, the relationship between Rodin and Claudel ended in 1890, the same year that Le frère et la soeur was conceived. While the sculpture is signed by Rodin and acknowledged as being a work he created, the original figure for the young woman was in fact modelled on Claudel’s La Jeune Fille à la Gerbe (Young Girl with a Sheaf). Using Claudel’s original form, Rodin made slight alterations to the composition including the addition of the small child. Le frère et la soeur (Brother and Sister) is the only known work in which Rodin directly collaborated with Claudel and was greatly received by collector’s during Rodin’s lifetime, perhaps because of its tender nature which differentiated it from the sombre figures that characterised The Gates of Hell. As a result, numerous museum collections around the world currently house versions of this model; including the Musée Rodin (Paris), the Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge), Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC) and the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston).
The Didier Claes gallery will display a selection of important masks, highlighted by a Kota mask from Gabon, along with a Chokwe mask from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and an Ibibio mask from Nigeria. The Kota masks are a rare and still unknown aspect of Kota art, discovered in the 20th century in North Kota, eastern Gabon. This mask (presumed period: late 19th to early 20th century), is known as an Emboli or Empoli and is a helmet mask of impressive height, carved out of wood. The mask reflects dreamlike imagery, merging animal and anthropomorphic motifs. The face is somewhat reminiscent of reliquaries with bulging eyes, a flat triangular nose and a rectangular mouth.
The exhibition will also feature a Pwo female mask (presumed period: late 19th to early 20th century), an outstanding example of a traditional Chokwe mask. Carved in wood, the mask features half-closed almond eyes with arched brows and patterns of scarification. The mask honours the founding female ancestors from who the Chokwe trace their descent and are often worn during ceremonies to bring fertility and prosperity to a community. The Ibibio mask (presumed period: late 19th to early 20th century) originates from southwest Nigeria. The mask has an emaciated appearance and the design is indicative of death or to the diseases common to the area. These masks are worn during annual ceremonies and relay the connection between the world of the living and that of their ancestors, who are responsible for the welfare of the tribe.
Xavier Eeckhout is an expert in the field of animal sculpture, offering an eclectic and varied array of works. Among the highlights on display during the exhibition, Galerie Xavier Eeckhout will present Rembrandt Bugatti’s (Italian, 1884-1916) Asian elephant walking (circa 1909-1910). Bugatti sought to capture the strength, movement and character traits of these majestic mammals, dedicating a series to sculpting elephants from 1907 to 1910. Also on view from Galerie Xavier Eeckhout will be works by Edouard Marcel Sandoz (Swiss, 1881–1971) including Seated fennec (circa 1920-1930), alongside Two young dogs (1931) by his pupil Enrico-Manfredo Di Palma-Falco (Italian, 1886-1988). Both artists completed their training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the tutelage of sculptor Antonin Mercié. Marcel Sandoz’s Seated fennec, portrays his understanding of classical and traditional techniques, knowledge of materials and profound understanding of his subject-matter. Focusing on the study of both wild and domestic animals, Marcel Sandoz was a prominent member of the Societé des Artistes Animaliers, founded in 1912, and went on to establish the French Society of Animalists in 1933.
