New Industrial Imaging Products at ASNT Fall 2019 Conference & Exhibit

Varex Imaging Corporation (Nasdaq: VREX) will exhibit its latest industrial Nondestructive Testing (NDT) imaging products at the Annual Meeting for the American Society for Nondestructive Testing in Las Vegas from November 18-21, 2019. New Chip Poised to Enable Hand-Held Microwave Imaging

Researchers have developed a new microwave imager chip that could one day enable low-cost handheld microwave imagers, or cameras. Because microwaves can travel through certain opaque objects, the new imagers could be useful for imaging through walls or detecting tumors through tissue in the body.
Researchers demonstrated the first nanophotonic microwave imager chip, which is significantly smaller that the equivalent all-electrical systems with a higher efficiency, and enables realization of hand-held microwave imagers for applications including through-the-wall imaging and tumor detection. In Optica, The Optical Society’s (OSA) journal for high-impact research, the researchers describe how they used a standard semiconductor fabrication process to make a microwave imager chip containing more than 1,000 photonic components. The square chip measures just over 2 millimeters on each side, making it about half the width of a pencil eraser.“Today’s practical microwave imagers are bench-top systems that are bulky and expensive,” said research team leader Firooz Aflatouni from the University of Pennsylvania, USA. “Our new near-field imager uses optical, rather than electronic, devices to process the microwave signal. This enabled us to make a chip-based imager similar to the optical camera chips in many smartphones.” Hand-held near-field microwave imagers would be useful for many applications including high-resolution brain imaging and monitoring heart motion and breathing. Miniaturization of microwave imagers would also benefit applications such as tracking objects in radar systems and low-power, high-speed communication links.

A Boost for Medical Imaging AI in India

HealthNet Global (HNG), a part of the Apollo Hospitals Group, India and Zebra Medical Vision (Zebra-Med:, one of the global leaders in AI Imaging software, Israel announced a new collaboration that will focus on validating and deploying AI based tools at scale across India. The companies shall jointly receive support from India-Israel Industrial R&D and Technological Innovation Fund (I4F) for their $4.9 Million project to co-develop and to provide clinical validation, and evidence of the efficacy of radiology Al based tools in India as per I4F norms.The final developed project will be able to assist as a primary screening method for major diseases in large scale screenings. For example, World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 3.6 million people with TB are missed by health systems every year and do not receive adequate care. This is primarily because patients with TB may present with mild or no symptoms, particularly early on. Many affected people arrive at clinics too late with advanced disease or multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB), which is difficult to treat and more likely to cause death. One of the key strategies to tackling TB is early diagnosis. Unfortunately, sputum testing is only 50% accurate and frequently misses the disease in its early stages. Both companies will focus on development of AI-based Chest X-ray interpretation tool for TB which can help address the gap.Speaking of the initiative, Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals said, “When it comes to health, the promise of AI to provide access and improve outcomes in very intriguing. There is a critical need to provide good healthcare access in remote and rural communities, and we believe this initiative will allow us the opportunity to make significant advances in this area. Apollo’s clinical and scientific depth and Zebra-Med’s expertise in AI complement each other perfectly. This project is part of our continuing endeavor to design new tools to improve healthcare access and deliver best outcomes to patients at lower cost.” In addition to leveraging clinical depth and breadth of the Apollo Hospitals network, HNG will work in close collaboration with Apollo Radiology International, a distinguished part of Apollo Hospitals, to bring in leadership, experience and technology in Radiology reporting to the project. The partnership will capitalize on the advancements already achieved by Zebra-Med in developing dozens of AI tools. The arsenal of algorithms will include deep learning algorithms for the detection of acute conditions such as brain bleeds in head CTs and Pneumothorax in chest X-ray, detection of breast cancer in mammograms, Osteoporosis in CT scans and 40 other conditions.

Intravascular imaging system in Japan

Accordo strategico per l’intelligenza artificiale nell’imaging medico per il fegato

Guerbet, un’azienda globale specializzata sugli agenti di contrasto e soluzioni per l’imaging medico diagnostico e interventistico, ha annunciato oggi di aver firmato un accordo di sviluppo esclusivo per la realizzazione di una soluzione software di intelligenza artificiale (AI) in collaborazione con IBM Watson Health, con l’obiettivo di supportare la diagnostica del cancro del fegato, utilizzando l’imaging TC e MRI e conseguentemente l’approccio terapeutico.Attraverso questa collaborazione, Guerbet e IBM Watson Health hanno pianificato di sviluppare congiuntamente soluzioni cliniche innovative di supporto decisionale. Il primo, chiamato Watson Imaging Care Advisor for Liver, è progettato per essere uno strumento di supporto clinico per i medici, che utilizzerà l’intelligenza artificiale per guidare il rilevamento, la stadiazione, la localizzazione, il monitoraggio, la terapia e la risposta del cancro al fegato primario e secondario. Il team di ricerca IBM lavorerà anche allo sviluppo delle soluzioni sfruttando ulteriori innovazioni in ambito di ricerca.
Il cancro al fegato è la seconda causa di morte per cancro in tutto il mondo ed è la causa di decesso in più rapida crescita negli Stati Uniti. Circa l’83% dei casi di cancro al fegato primario si verifica nei paesi in via di sviluppo. Il fegato è anche un sito comune per le metastasi, in particolare nel caso dei tumori del tratto digestivo, in cui quasi il 50% dei pazienti sviluppa metastasi. La speranza è che una migliore caratterizzazione e una più tempestiva identificazione di queste metastasi possa portare a un miglioramento degli esiti. “Il cancro del fegato è un problema in crescita per la salute a livello globale, e l’uso dell’intelligenza aumentata sull’imaging medico può essere un valido supporto nella sua risoluzione. Invasive Coronary Imaging and Hemodynamics Invasive and Interventional Cardiology, Cardiovascular Surgery

cardiology congress-2016Rome, Italy An invasive imaging technique called optical coherence tomography (OCT) can visualize the coronary arteries in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and lead to better outcomes compared to standard angiography-guided PCI, according to new findings reported here.Results of the DOCTORS (Does Optical Coherence Tomography Optimize Results of Stenting) study were presented in a Hot Line session at ESC Congress 2016, with simultaneous publication in Circulation.In patients with non–ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndromes (NSTE-ACS), OCT “provided useful additional information beyond that obtained by angiography alone, and impacted directly on physician decision-making,” reported the study’s lead investigator Nicolas Meneveau, MD, PhD, from University Hospital Jean Minjoz, in Besançon, France.OCT, which involves introducing an imaging catheter into the coronary artery to check vessel size, lesion characteristics, and stent positioning and expansion “led to a change in procedural strategy in half of cases,” said Prof. Meneveau.However, “additional prospective randomized studies with clinical endpoints are required before it can be recommended for standard use.”The multi-centre trial included 240 NSTE-ACS patients who were randomised 1:1 to standard fluoroscopy-guided PCI alone (angio group) or with the addition of OCT – performed an average of 3.8 times, before, during an after the procedure.Overall, OCT was associated with better functional outcome than PCI guided by fluoroscopy alone, said Prof Meneveau.
The primary endpoint of the study, which was fractional flow reserve (FFR) – a measure of blood flow and pressure in the coronary artery before and after the procedure – was significantly better in the navigatore coronarieOCT group as compared to the angio group (0.94 vs 0.92, p=0.005).In addition, the number of patients with a post-procedural FFR>0.90 was significantly higher in the OCT group (82.5% vs 64.2%, p=0.0001).Compared to angiography, OCT allowed clinicians to see significantly more thrombi (69% vs 47%, p=0.0004) and calcifications (45.8% vs 9%, p<0.0001) before stent implantation. This resulted in more frequent antiplatelet use in the OCT group (53.3% vs. 35.8%). As well, OCT was also significantly more likely to reveal stent underexpansion (42% vs 10.8%), incomplete lesion coverage (20% vs 17%, and edge dissection (37.5% vs 4%), compared to angio. Stent malapposition, which is not visible under fluoroscopy alone, was observed in 32% of patients undergoing OCT.These observations led to the more frequent use of post-stent overinflation in the OCT group (43% vs. 12.5%, p<0.0001) and a lower percentage of residual stenosis (7.0% vs 8.7%, p=0.01).
The addition of OCT increased procedure time as well patients’ exposure to fluoroscopy and contrast medium, but this did not increase complications such as peri-procedural myocardial infarction or impaired kidney function, added Prof. Meneveau. “Findings of the DOCTORS study add to the cumulating body of evidence in favor of a potential benefit of OCT to guide angioplasty,” he said. “The improvement in functional outcomes could translate into a clinical benefit in the longer term.”

In addition, Pico640 Gen2 is easy to calibrate, even in shutterless mode, due to the predictability of the sensor’s behavioral patterns over varying operating temperatures.Other significant improvements include better image quality through higher image resolution (>300kpixels). This means that users can capture the most minute details up to a distance of several hundred meters. The product offers faster frame rates from 30Hz to 120Hz that provide more fluid images. No matter how fast an object is moving, captured images remain unblurred.Another parameter, the NEDT (Noise Equivalent Differential Temperature), has also been upgraded. NEDT enables a longer detection range and crisper images; the lower the NEDT, the sharper the image. Dipping far below 50mK means that this model has achieved a more than 15% improvement over earlier generations, without any trade-off in power consumption. It operates at less than 130mW with a 60Hz frame rate. This is in contrast to other thermal imaging sensors in this category, which tend to consume more power, typically >200 to 350mW at an equivalent frame rate. All Pico640 Gen2 features are housed in ceramic packaging, a cost-saving production technique ULIS first introduced to the market ten years ago. It has shown its value and vacuum integrity in the 500,000 ULIS thermal image sensors already in the field. Prodotti Vascolari Periferici

L’utilizzo di prodotti vascolari periferici sta aumentando in Italia, così come in tutta l’Europa occidentale, grazie alle strategie di controllo delle infezioni e la crescente domanda di dispositivi medici monouso. Allo stesso tempo, i progressi tecnologici dei sistemi di imaging e gli sviluppi interventistici dell’angioplastica stanno facendo progredire notevolmente le prospettive di mercato. La ricerca a Trieste

Trieste 10 luglio, dalle 9.30 alle 17.15, nella nuova sede della Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati, in via Bonomea 265 a Trieste, sarà presentata l’attività di ricerca del Centro avviata con il tomografo a risonanza magnetica 3 Tesla, acquisito e installato grazie a un sostanziale supporto finanziario dell’amministrazione regionale. All’incontro, organizzato dal comitato scientifico del Centro di risonanza magnetica della Regione e il settore di neuroscienze cognitive della Sissa, parteciperanno stimati scienziati di fama internazionale, tra i quali: Hugues Duffau del Centro Ospedaliero-Universitario di Montpellier (Francia), pioniere della tecnica neurochirurgica nel paziente sveglio; Adrian Owen, noto per l’uso dell’imaging funzionale per lo studio di pazienti in stato vegetativo persistente; Stefano Cappa, uno dei fondatori del primo centro italiano di neuroimaging presso l’Università San Raffaele di Milano e profondo conoscitore delle basi neurologiche del linguaggio, della memoria semantica e dei processi decisionali, e Carlo Porro, che da anni studia, prima all’Università di Udine e ora presso quella di Modena e Reggio Emilia, la fisiopatologia del dolore e dell’analgesia nell’uomo, anche servendosi dell’imaging funzionale.
“Si tratta di un’apparecchiatura a elevato campo magnetico, utile per la diagnostica avanzata neurologica, cardiologica, vascolare e mammografica, ma anche per attività di ricerca nell’ambito delle neuroscienze” spiega Raffaella Rumiati, docente di neuropsicologia alla Sissa. “Con questo Centro – precisa Tim Shallice, coordinatore del settore di neuroscienze cognitive della Scuola – la Regione si è dotata di una tra le più moderne apparecchiature per la visualizzazione cerebrale che permette una diagnostica molto accurata ma soprattutto ricerche di base all’avanguardia?”.

Nasce Emma, consorzio europeo per i radiofarmaci

E’ nata in Francia, l’Associazione europea dei produttori per l’imaging molecolare (Emma), il primo consorzio europeo per la produzione e la commercializzazione dei radiofarmaci per la Pet (Tomografia a emissione di positroni). E’ il risultato della partnership fra alcuni dei maggiori produttori europei di radiofarmaci: Advanced Accelerator Application (Aaa), Biokosmos, Erigal, Map Medical e Pet Net Solutions. “Emma – spiegano i soci fondatori – raggruppa in un unico network i 16 impianti europei di produzione delle cinque società per rispondere agli sviluppi dell’industria farmaceutica legata alla Pet”. Il consorzio si pone quindi come piattaforma integrata per la produzione di radiofarmaci per la Pet in Europa e garantirà, si legge in una nota, una risposta efficace al bisogno a breve temine di supportare lo sviluppo e la registrazione di nuove molecole per la Pet, ora nelle ultime fasi di ricerca clinica, per la diagnostica e la cura dei tumori, delle malattie cardiache e neurologiche. “Emma nasce come risposta comune alla forte necessità di unificare un settore storicamente molto frammentato” spiega il fisico Stefano Buono, presidente e Ceo di Aaa, uno dei soci fondatori del consorzio. “Il consorzio – prosegue Buono – non rappresenta una semplice manovra di consolidamento, ma soprattutto un rafforzamento strategico delle società coinvolte, per beneficiare della loro leadership nei rispettivi mercati. Emma contribuirà quindi a rendere più vitale un settore con forti prospettive di crescita per un futuro sostenibile”. La partnership propone anche di fornire consulenza e supporto ai principali stakeholder della catena verticale dei servizi di imaging per la Pet in tutta Europa. “Per il forte impatto positivo che le attività del consorzio avranno sul mercato europeo dei radio-farmaci per la Pet, è previsto un all’allargamento di Emma a nuovi partner in futuro”, annunciano i soci fondatori, sottolineando che, “a rotazione, ogni membro di Emma ricoprirà il ruolo di Rappresentante del consorzio che, per i primi tre anni, sarà svolto da Aaa”. Gara d’appalto aggiudicata ad Exprivia

Exprivia SpA – società quotata al segmento STAR di Borsa Italiana [XPR.MI]– si è aggiudicata una gara d’appalto per la fornitura di sistemi integrati RIS-PACS-CIS (sistemi di gestione dati e immagini in radiologia e cardiologia) basati su un’architettura virtualizzata e ridondata, presso gli Ospedali di Asti e di Nizza Monferrato e presso otto Case della Salute della provincia. Il RIS-PACS-CIS, soluzione proprietaria di Exprivia, integrerà tutte le diagnostiche presenti ed estenderà l’archiviazione e il workflow alla componente dell’imaging cardiaco e dei tracciati elettrocardiografici nell’archivio PACS. Exprivia si è  aggiudicata la gara per un importo di oltre 11 milioni di Euro di cui circa 6 milioni per la fornitura iniziale (che sarà effettuata entro il primo trimestre 2010) e i restanti 5 milioni di Euro a fronte dei servizi di assistenza e conduzione degli impianti nei prossimi 8 anni.

Canon acquires 17% stake in I.R.I.S. Group
