Washington, DC. With the nation confronting urgent issues such as the economic downturn and reform of the immigration system, more than 200 individuals, including representatives from 33 organizations in 17 states, gathered for the 2009 South Asian Summit to amplify local voices and experiences at the national level. The Summit, co-sponsored by South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) and the South Asian Law Students Association (SALSA) of American University The Summit also provided an opportunity for community-based groups that are members of the National Coalition of South Asian Organizations (NCSO) to have deeper conversations about how to enhance multi-issue work that crosses regional lines, and to evaluate the progress made since the last Summit in 2007 which led to the creation of the NCSO.  The Summit opened with the first national South Asian Advocacy Day which included remarks from White House and congressional staffers who provided information about policy priorities and initiatives that will affect South Asian communities. Participants brought their local experiences and stories to congressional offices and advocated for legislation to advance civil and immigrant rights for all communities.  Participants also attended the SAALT ChangeMaker Awards Reception featuring author and sociologist, Sudhir Venkatesh, and the recipients of the ChangeMaker awards, including Muhammed Malik from Florida; Asm Rahman from Michigan; Sonia Sarkar from Baltimore; and Rishi Singh from New York City.    Over the weekend, Summit participants attended a variety of informative workshops and panels featuring experts in a wide range of fields.  Topics included educational and health equity, immigration reform and human rights, as well as skills-building sessions about how to be an effective spokesperson, how to develop community-based organizations and how to start community-driven media.    Community members and organizational representatives at the Summit identified ways to move forward, including taking back resources, materials and information to local communities; building grassroots support for national policy campaigns and priorities; highlighting important issues with local government agencies and policymakers; and staying connected with one another.
