Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 13 giugno 2010

Los Angeles, California, Stefania Mondello will formally receive The Premio Award 2010 in her native Country: awarding ceremony will be held on June 24 in Bari, during the National Annual Conference of the Italian Association for Women Inventors and Innovators (ITWIIN http://www.itwiin.it), which is the Italian partner of Bridges to Italy in this initiative.  Her name is Stefania Mondello, she was born in Sicily, the region of Southern Italy where she also graduated from Medical School, then in 2008 she landed in the United States of America, where she is doing research at the Department of Anaesthesiology of the University of Florida/Shands Hospital headquartered in Gainesville.  Now, the high tech community of scientists, resarchers and entrepreneurs gathered around the California non-profit association Bridges to Italy (www.bridgestoitaly.org) recognizes her value as Italian female scientist working in North America awarding her of The Premio Award 2010.  Stefania Mondello, who participated in the contest just a week before its official deadline, flatly overcame other ten outstanding candidates: in second place, Laura Bordone from Novartis, presented her studies on the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C-Elegans) as an optimal model for human biology providing further applications in pharmacology; while the third place was assigned to Boston entrepreneur Candida Fratazzi, founder of Boston Clinical Research, leading company in the creation of experimental drug trial design aimed at reducing the time-to-market of new drugs.  Despite her young age -31 years old- Stefania Mondello already went through a brilliant scientific career, leading her from Messina – the city where in 2003 she got her degree in medicine- to some important research structures both in Italy (the Paediatric hospital , to mention a few) and abroad, from the Alexandra Hospital in Athens, to the University College London Medical School in London, until the U.S., where she is a Research Fellow at the University of Florida, a Postdoctoral Clinical Research Fellow in the Center of Innovative Research, directed by Dr. Kevin K Wang, and Clinical Programs Department, directed by Dr. Ronald L Hayes, at Banyan Biomarkers, Inc.  Stefania Mondello’s research focuses on the new frontiers of medicine: her project at the University of Florida’s spin-off company Banyan Biomarkers in Alachua, involves the identification and clinical validation of brain damage biomarkers which are present in the blood and the cerebrospinal fluid upon Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) . In the United States there are 1.4 million TBI cases every year, and this condition is the Number One cause of death in young adults.  Dr. Mondello’s research focuses on the analysis and correlation between biomarkers and clinical data. The goal of this study is to create the first reliable hematocrit test to provide an accurate diagnosis, monitoring and prognostic evaluation of brain injuries.
