European dermatologists discuss the newest therapies and innovations on skin health

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 20 aprile 2018

Barcelona More than 800 dermatologists and professionals related to skin health from all around Europe have gather in the 11th Skin Academy, organized by Almirall in Barcelona (Spain), a highly regarded and established medical dermatology forum focused on the Science of the skin. Attendees discussed about the newest skin health therapies and the latest innovations for psoriasis, skin cancer, infectious and inflammatory skin diseases as well as the most recent studies and their relevance to clinical practice.
Prof. Dr. Diamant Thaçi, M.D., Professor of Dermatology and Venereology at Comprehensive Center for Inflammation Medicine (CCIM) from University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein in Lubeck (Germany), Chairman of the 11th Skin Academy, pointed out the importance of this sort of medical meeting where renowned experts share their expertise about the challenges and innovations related to the Science of the skin.
Scientific innovations in different skin health diseases were evaluated, whereas psoriasis was remarked including the news about fumaric acid esters (FAE) or how to apply translational medicine strategies to treat psoriasis.
The meeting provided perspectives on conventional systemic treatments that still represent a mainstay for the treatment of psoriasis. In this class of substances, FAEs are an established treatment, with long-term clinical experience in Germany. FAEs are currently an option as a first line therapy in the EU psoriasis guidelines. In 2017, the European Commission gave its positive opinion on dimethyl fumarate (DMF), which is being launched throughout Europe.
Concerning biologic treatments for this disease, different classes were presented in the sessions of the Forum, including the novel class of IL-23 inhibitors. Experts insisted on the importance of a better understanding of the pathogenesis of psoriasis, and researching treatments with an improved safety profile to reach unmet needs in the long-term management of patients.
This medical meeting also aimed to introduce new useful tools under evaluation for assessing actinic keratosis (AK) severity like the “Actinic Keratosis Area and Severity Index” (AKASI). Recent evidence on AK therapies was also presented and experts assessed the available evidence of comparative efficacy of topical and ablative treatments, the use of combination therapies, and potential future treatments in development.A faculty of international experts also reviewed the international guidelines, which vary in their recommendations as to whether all lesions require treatment, beyond advice on photoprotection, as there is clear evidence that AKs are markers for skin cancer.
Other hot topics were discussed such as dermoscopy in nail conditions, challenges in diagnosis of onychomycosis, new therapies for hair loss, latest news on acne vulgaris and rosacea, immunopathogenesis in atopic dermatitis and cosmetic procedures for dermatologic conditions.

Globalization is an Opportunity to Learn and Explore the Best Educational Innovations says Global Scholar

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 4 febbraio 2018

JohannesburgJohannesburg. Education research has centered historically on learning from high performing systems in North America and Europe, and more recently, systems in South East Asia. According to Professor Brahm Fleisch, Professor of Education Policy at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, globalization is expanding that approach. In a new interview in The Global Search for Education with C.M. Rubin (Founder of CMRubinWorld), Fleisch explains that both the Global North and the Global South face substantial challenges for learners but that they are very different. In the North, the focus is on students acquiring higher order learning skills, while in the South, where many children have just recently gained access to school, the problem is that they’re “not learning to read, write, and become numerate.”
Findings from the latest research in the Global South education systems is that “combined and structured intervention programs need to focus on early grade learning, particularly in areas of literacy in local languages and second language.” Fleisch discusses the “emergence of a new knowledge base” from the Global South” based on research that illustrates what’s working well for schools “in resource-constrained contexts with limited professional capital.” He notes that unlike “the methodological orientation” of the Global North, the research from the South is “increasingly building on the accumulation of findings on robust models using large-scale randomised trials.”
Brahm Fleisch is Professor of Education Policy and Head of the Division of Educational Leadership, Policy and Skills, The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. His work is featured in a new book, Future Directions of Educational Change (edited by Helen Janc Malone, Santiago Rincón-Gallardo, and Kristin Kew; Routledge, 2018), which brings together timely discussions on social justice, professional capital, and systems change from some of the leading global scholars in the field of education.CMRubinWorld launched in 2010 to explore what kind of education would prepare students to succeed in a rapidly changing globalized world. Its award-winning series, The Global Search for Education, is a highly regarded trailblazer in the renaissance of 21st century education, and occupies a widely respected place in the pulse of key issues facing every nation and the collective future of all children. It connects today’s top thought leaders with a diverse global audience of parents, students and educators. Its highly readable platform allows for discourse concerning our highest ideals and the sustainable solutions we must engineer to achieve them. C. M. Rubin has produced over 500 interviews and articles discussing an extensive array of topics under a singular vision: when it comes to the world of children, there is always more work to be done.

Innovations to prevent heart disease take centre stage at EuroPrevent congress

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 8 marzo 2017

Sophia AntipolisSophia Antipolis. Innovations to prevent heart disease will take centre stage at EuroPrevent 2017 in Malaga, Spain.EuroPrevent is the annual congress of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC), a registered branch of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). EuroPrevent 2017 takes place 6 to 8 April at the Palacio de Ferias y Congresos de Malaga (FYCMA). This year’s theme is “innovations in preventive cardiology”. The congress will explore novel ideas and technologies that could have an impact on society and what that impact could mean. “It’s the right time to talk about innovation in preventive cardiology because we are moving beyond classical treatments and approaches on a number of fronts,” said Professor Jean-Paul Schmid, programme committee chair.
Could the Nordic diet be the new Mediterranean diet? Experts will discuss how it provides cardiovascular protection that is also eco-friendly. Sessions on nutrition will also explore diet and the microbiome as the next frontier in cardiovascular prevention, examine whether patients with metabolic syndrome should eat low carbohydrate or low cholesterol diets, and ask “Do superfoods exist and do we need them?”.“Nutrition used to be our main weapon to lower cholesterol but it took a back seat when statins came on the scene,” said Professor Schmid. “EuroPrevent will look at new therapeutic uses of food and nutrients and also the potential dangers of genetically modified food.”
A breakthrough in the management of high cholesterol could see some patients using monoclonal antibodies called PCSK9-inhibitors. Journalists will find out which patients should add these to their statin regime and how effective the newer drugs are. Novel oral antidiabetic drugs are another important discovery that will be presented.Professor Schmid said: “Monoclonal antibodies are used in oncology and rheumatology, and now intensive lipid lowering with this new class of drugs is a hot topic. This potent medication may help patients unable to reach cholesterol targets on statins alone and better protect patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia who have genetically high cholesterol. Leaders in the field will talk about the safety of very low lipid levels.”
A session on social inequalities will examine cardiovascular disease incidence and survival in migrants, and explain the association between cardiovascular risk factors and borough socioeconomic level. “Cardiovascular disease in migrants is an increasingly important topic and we need strategies for prevention,” said Professor Schmid. “Members of the press will hear about the scale of the problem, how these populations are unique, and how we might screen and then help them.”
The latest science on the health effects of e-cigarettes and waterpipe will be presented, along with the impact of TV and movies on tobacco use and cessation in the young. “After the harms of secondhand smoke were confirmed and actions taken to prevent it we thought we knew everything about tobacco,” said Professor Schmid. “But e-cigarettes have reactivated the discussion about smoking, smoking cessation, and smoking behaviour. We will delve into the latest facts about the hazards of e-cigarettes and waterpipe.”
Experts will present the most up-to-date evidence on physical activity monitoring in patients with cardiovascular disease and investigate whether mobile apps help prevent cardiovascular disease in people of all ages. Journalists will hear lively, balanced debates on whether too much exercise can be detrimental to cardiovascular health, and whether exercise restriction is necessary for athletes with cardiac disease.Dr Michael Joner, previous winner of an ESC Grant for Medical Research Innovation will give the EuroPrevent 2017 Keynote Lecture. The Spanish Society of Cardiology will hold cardiopulmonary resuscitation workshops for the general public at Malaga Town Hall on all three days of the congress.Professor Schmid said: “As the leading international congress in preventive cardiology, EuroPrevent covers epidemiology and population science, cardiac rehabilitation and exercise, and sports cardiology. We are expecting more than 1000 cardiologists, allied health professionals, general practitioners, researchers and policy makers to attend. Journalists should register now for this top notch event.”

La transition énergétique par l’innovation participative : un défi pour l’UE

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 14 settembre 2016

(photo: transition)

World Environmental Day highlights need for sustainable development

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 4 giugno 2016

londonLondon. This Sunday is UN World Environmental Day, which is a global platform designed to raise awareness about the need to protect and preserve the environment. The search for alternative energy sources is high on the agenda for many decision makers, with discussions heating up around fracking in Yorkshire for shale gas and the fluctuation of oil prices. Energy is an integral component within our daily lives, but the pitfalls which come with these commodities should not be overlooked.Clean tech innovations are paving the way for strong economic growth which have much lower environmental impact. The myths of smart cities and clean technologies are rapidly turning into reality, creating a world which functions on resources which do not harm the environment and enable business development. Businesses are beginning to grow more environmentally conscious and aware of their global footprint on the environment, whether it’s through CSR or the development of cleaner technologies.Marco A. Attisani, CEO & Founder of Watly, comments: “Business leaders need to recognise the potential of integrating sustainable actions into their business models. Watly is self-sufficient and functions on the energy it creates. Water, solar energy and internet connectivity work together to provide a valuable resource for communities which lack the infrastructure.” Watly’s thermodynamic computer uses solar energy to sanitise over 5,000 litres of water per day, providing internet connectivity alongside clean water and electricity to the world’s most vulnerable communities. Watly are currently in the process of developing their Watly 3.0 following their successful trial of a smaller machine, Watly 2.0, in Abenta Village, Ghana. During its lifespan of 15 years, one Watly can reduce as much as 1,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, which is equivalent to 2,500 barrels of oil. Marco continues: “We embrace the philosophy of connecting business ambitions with a sustainable core by harnessing solar energy which as a source does not have damaging consequence to the environment. With the volatility of oil prices and discussions over fracking, there is an opportunity which business leaders should not overlook, which is renewable energy, a bountiful resource which does not come at a price to obtain.”
