Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 29 marzo 2018

The conference will be held April 14 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at UCLA Medical Center at 1250 – 16th Street in Santa Monica. With an increased number of children participating in sporting activities year-round, awareness of how to prevent and care for injuries in young athletes is more important than ever. With that in mind the Orthopaedic Institute for Children (OIC) will host a special Sports Medicine Conference at UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica on Saturday, April 14.
“Young athletes present unique challenges to athletic trainers due to the repetitive and high strain they put on their bodies during what is often a year-round schedule of sporting activities,” said Richard Bowen, M.D., director of the Center for Sports Medicine at OIC. “This conference has been specially designed to provide certified athletic trainers with the knowledge needed to properly identify unique pathologies in youth athletes. By the end of the day, participants will have an increased understanding of the various treatment methods for pediatric sports injuries.”Conducted by a faculty comprised of physicians and other healthcare professionals dedicated to sports injuries, topics to be covered at the conference include updated treatment techniques for concussions, hip pathologies, ACL grafts, training-related injuries, back pain in athletes, sports nutrition and injury recovery. Breakout session labs will include those focused on shoulder dysfunction, kinesiology taping and core strengthening beyond sit-ups and planks.
OIC’s Center for Sports Medicine is a state-of-the-art facility staffed by a multidisciplinary team, including sports medicine physicians, pediatric orthopaedic surgeons, nurse practitioners, medical assistants, athletic trainers and physical therapists, all focused on helping young athletes return to their sports activities as quickly and safely as possible. The center currently treats nearly 300 children each month – an 18 percent increase in cases over the prior year.“Our team specializes in treating a broad range of today’s athletic injuries before they damage tomorrow’s opportunities,” said Dr. Bowen. “Keeping young athletes in the game is our top priority. The goal of this important one-day seminar is to have as many of the city’s athletic trainers as possible attend.”

Dolphin-Safe Monitoring Program’s Annual Report highlights achievements and successful partnership with Friend of the Sea

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 21 aprile 2014

earth instituteEarth Island Institute’s International Monitoring Program has released its 2013 Annual Report of the Dolphin Safe Monitoring Program. The program which started in the early 90s, encompasses now more than 508 tuna companies, brokers, fishermen, and retail outlets in 70 countries. All Dolphin-Safe companies commit to tuna fishing practices which to not encircle dolphins and reduce bycatch of turtles, albatross and sharks. Dolphins mortality in the Eastern Tropical Pacific has consequently decreased by 98% since the launching of the program.Tuna companies have to be Dolphin-Safe approved by the EII in order to apply for Friend of the Sea certification. 20 tuna fisheries and fleets have been approved Friend of the Sea and over 60 companies have products certified. 375 tuna vessels have been approved friend of the Sea worldwide. For decades, the EII and Friend of the Sea have made companies aware of the issues related to unsustainable fishing practices and they have lead producers to reduce their environmental impact on marine mammals and the marine ecosystem in general.“The Earth Island Institute’s Dolphin-Safe project” explains Paolo Bray (Director of Friend of the Sea and European Coordinator of Dolphin-Safe program), “has been the precursor project of the sustainable seafood movement. When the EII started the Monitoring Program, 30 years ago, ‘sustainability’ was an almost unknown word in the industry.”“Verifying the dolphin-safe operations of tuna companies around the world” comments David C. Phillips, Executive Director of Earth Island Institute, “ has been instrumental for the protection of dolphins and other marine lives as well as providing consumers’ confidence in tuna products. The Earth Island Institute fully supports Friend of the Sea and invites Dolphin-Safe companies to join the program.”

The creation of a University Hospital Institute

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 23 maggio 2010

Nantes. With support from Nantes Métropole urban council and the Pays de la Loire Regional Council, Nantes University Hospital and the University of Nantes have joined forces to push for the creation of a University Hospital Institute (Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire, IHU) provisionally entitled the “European Centre for Transplantation Sciences and Immunotherapy”. The French government is to set up a total of 5 IHUs, following a rigorous tendering process. The institutes will be funded from the proceeds of the country’s National Bond Scheme. Over the last 10 years, the city of Nantes’ healthcare cluster has forged a reputation as one of the best in France. It is gaining an international reputation in many fields (including immunology, transplantation, oncology, cardiology, gastroenterology, human nutrition, cell & gene therapy and biomaterials). The cluster constitutes a key element in the Pays de la Loire region’s economic attractiveness and is a driving force for regional research efforts. Its success is based on close collaboration between Nantes University Hospital, the INSERM national medical research institute, the University of Nantes, other research providers and biotech companies, with the support of the local authorities and the French State. The Nantes-based IHU project focuses on the role of patient-centred translational research and medical care in understanding and curing disease. The IHU project is being led by Professor Jean-Paul Soulillou (one of the field’s leading physicians and researchers) and currently involves over 1100 staff (including almost 200 researchers- one of the French government’s criteria for the future IHUs). It is set to be Europe’s leading programme in the high-priority field of transplantation science.

European rail policy

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 8 aprile 2010

Brussels international conference on 22 June entitled Effectiveness of EU Rail Policy. It is going to be a top meeting place for representatives of the European Commission, European governments, railway infrastructure managers, rail freight operators as well as passenger operators and the industry. The conference will pose and answer questions such as: How effective has European rail policy been so far? Has it been fairly implemented in the EU Member States? Has it effectively guaranteed fair competition? The conference will also address issues such as the rail policy making process itself and European regulation. Other themes will be competition in the passenger and in the freight markets. The organisers are the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Leeds in the UK and Europoint Rail Technology Conferences & Exhibitions in the Netherlands. The conference programme will start with an overview of the effectiveness of EU rail policy. This summary is given by Chris Nash, professor at the aforementioned Institute for Transport Studies (ITS). Over the past few years, this institute has undertaken a number of research projects. These have contributed to the identification of best practices in the implementation of EU rail policy and to consider how effective this policy has been. The results from this and other research will set the tone of the conference. His introductory speech is followed by other top speakers, such as Maurizio Castelleti, Head of Rail Transport and Interoperability Unit of DG MOVE. Johannes Ludewig, executive director of CER will subsequently speak on EU Rail Policy – more than legislation? The function of the EU Railway Agency in the implementation process of EU rail policy will be addressed by Marcel Verslype, executive director of ERA. This session will close off with a forum discussion. It will be interesting to hear the viewpoints in the discussion of for instance two national competitors. These are the Italian national public railway operator, FS (Ferrovie dello Stato), and the relatively newcomer to the Italian passenger railway market, NTV (Nuovo Trasport Viaggiatori). NTV, high-speed railway operator, will start offering passenger services on high-speed lines as of next year.
