WorldQuant Completes Inaugural International Quant Championship

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 30 settembre 2018

WorldQuant, the global quantitative asset management firm, announced the completion of its inaugural International Quant Championship, a competition designed to simulate the best algorithms with over 11,000 participants from more than 1,000 universities across 80 countries. The 47 finalists traveled from 15 countries for the ultimate competition in Singapore, following regional finals where over 500 teams competed in Bangkok, Beijing, Hanoi, Moscow, Mumbai, Seoul, Singapore and Taipei. “The scale and success of our competition cements our philosophy that talent is distributed globally and there remains an untapped pool of extremely smart data scientists seeking professional opportunities that can be delivered virtually. Our vision remains to further scale WorldQuant’s virtual network to bring opportunity to any individual with the interest and ability to put their expertise to use,” said Igor Tulchinsky, Founder, Chairman and CEO of WorldQuant. The International Quant Championship builds on the 20 competitions that the WorldQuant Virtual Research Center has hosted over the past five years to uncover talent globally, foster interest in quantitative finance and allow participants to compete with top quantitative minds. Participants come from various disciplines, including computer science, engineering, physics, finance, business administration and mechanics, and are evaluated on a range of skills, including the use of operators and datasets and the understanding, selection and execution of high-quality algorithms.
“Academic theory does not directly teach the discipline of quantitative finance, so it is up to industry to build up the skills required by individuals to become successful quants and creating practical algorithm simulations is an essential part of that process. We are also pleased that over a quarter of our International Quant Championship contestants were women, including the winning team of three Russian women living in France,” said Nitish Maini, General Manager of WorldQuant Virtual Research Center.WorldQuant Virtual Research Center has more than 70,000 users from 180 countries and over 2,000 universities who are given the opportunity to learn about quantitative finance, build financial models, participate in global competitions and be considered for research consultant positions. WorldQuant has discovered over 1,000 consultants through the Virtual Research Center and users have collectively run over 93 million simulations on the Virtual Research Center’s online platform.

EU leads international efforts to restore sustainable tuna stocks

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 25 novembre 2017

tonno in scatolaThe International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), responsible for the conservation of tunas and tuna like species in the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent seas, has concluded its Annual Meeting in Marrakesh. on 14 The meeting was dominated by discussions surrounding Bluefin tuna, in particular for the Eastern and Mediterranean stock. Based on scientific advice, ICCAT agreed to a gradual increase in the total allowed catches (TAC) reaching a maximum of 36,000 ton in 2020 (28,200t in 2018 and 32,240t in 2019). This increase reflects a widely recognised improvement in the overall situation for Atlantic tuna stocks, compared to a decade ago. Whilst the proposal for the increase was not tabled by the EU, the general improvement of the stock reflects the outcome of action led by the European Union and the sustained efforts by fishermen and the fishing industry, in the last decade.
Karmenu Vella, Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries said: “Our experience of recent years is that concerted efforts by all parties can secure rapid progress towards more sustainable fisheries. We now need to continue our work towards a long-term management regime for Eastern Bluefin tuna as proposed by the European Commission.”Against this background, the EU had proposed to replace the existing rebuilding plan with a management plan for Eastern Bluefin tuna, acknowledging the success of the recovery measures implemented since 2007. However, it was decided to delay the discussions to next year’s ICCAT meeting.ICCAT also continued its work on other commercially important species, in particular on Northern albacore. Based on an EU-proposal, for the first time in ICCAT history, Harvest Control Rules were adopted and TAC increased by 20%. Harvest Control Rules are the latest generation of science-based approaches to effective fisheries management and provide guidelines on how much fishing can take place according to the state of the stock. Moreover, ICCAT adopted measures to freeze the fishing effort on the stock of Mediterranean albacore, adopting a precautionary approach until better information becomes available on this stock. Finally, ICCAT adopted Recommendations reducing the TACs for Northern and Southern Atlantic swordfish tabled by the EU, also with the objective of adopting a precautionary approach encouraged by the scientific Committee. In terms of Tropical tunas, ICCAT did not adopt specific measures this year but decided to implement a pro-rata reduction of the TACs for Bigeye tuna and Yellowfin tuna, for which overfishing took place in 2016. It is also planned that an extensive review of the existing management measures should take place in 2018.Regarding sharks, ICCAT was able to adopt measures aimed at protecting sharks in the North Atlantic. The measures adopted for Northern shortfin mako aim to reduce the current fishing mortality and to lay the ground for the adoption of more ambitious measures in 2019. Despite an increase in the number of Parties supporting the proposal to introduce a fins-attached policy, it was regrettably not possible to secure its adoption.

International police cooperation – MEPs give green light to deal with Brazil to fight organised crime

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 17 marzo 2016

europolA new agreement establishing police cooperation between Europol and Brazil to reinforce the fight against organised crime, such as facilitating illegal immigration and human trafficking, drug related crimes and credit card fraud and other cybercrime related activities was passed by the Civil Liberties Committee on Wednesday by 42 votes to 5, with 6 abstentions.”The agreement on strategic cooperation between Brazil and Europol will be of particular importance, particularly in the run up to the 2016 Olympic games, to support the fight against organised crime, including human trafficking and cybercrime”, said Civil Liberties Committee Chair Claude Moraes (S&D, UK) who is responsible for steering the proposal through Parliament.”This agreement will enable the exchange of specialist knowledge, information as well as advice and support related to criminal investigations with full respect of fundamental rights to privacy and without involving the exchange of personal data,” he added.Under the current rules, Parliament must only be consulted before the Council establishes police cooperation agreements with third countries. However, in the recently concluded talks on new rules to govern Europol, Parliament’s negotiators insisted on inserting a review clause on all such agreements. This means that all existing international agreements between Europol and third countries will be assessed within five years after the entry into force of the new regulation in order to check that they comply fully with data protection standards and meet EU standards on policing.Under the Lisbon Treaty, Parliament decides on an equal footing with Council on Europol. Once the new Europol regulation enters into force, Parliament will be required to approve all new international police agreements.
The recommendation to establish strategic cooperation between Europol and Brazil is scheduled for a Plenary vote in April. Once Parliament has been heard, the Council of Ministers can authorise Europol to formally conclude the agreement, so that it can enter into force.

International ocean governance: dialogue with our partners intensifies

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 2 ottobre 2015

maritime“Drivers for Blue growth in the Baltic Sea Region” conference, Copenhagen, 6 October 2015. European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, has intensified dialogue with international maritime stakeholders on how to improve ocean governance globally. To take advantage of the opportunities offered by this global outreach, the Ocean governance consultation period ends on 15th of October.Following his speech earlier this month at the GLACIER Conference (Global Leadership in the Arctic: Cooperation, Innovation, Engagement and Resilience), organised by the US State Department in Anchorage, Alaska, Commissioner Vella this week held intensive meetings in Washington, D.C., with the US administration, NGOs and stakeholders. His listening tour on ocean governance will continue in the coming weeks with stops in Chile (Our Oceans Conference, Viña del Mar), Spain, and China.
Besides putting ocean governance onto the international agenda, these meetings are also an opportunity to stress the EU’s commitment to sustainable development and its efforts to protect and preserve marine ecosystems for current and future generations. For instance, the EU is developing a Blue Growth Strategy that allows maritime activities to thrive while maintaining high standards on environmental protection. In this context, Mr Vella has repeatedly welcomed the UN’s new 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and goals, which were adopted on 25 September. Goal 14 specifically calls on the international community to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. (Photo: maritime)

Building the Blue Growth agenda: Commission asks public its views on EU’s role in shaping international ocean governance

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 27 giugno 2015

commissione europeaThe Commission has launched a public consultation on what the EU can do to improve international governance of oceans and seas to the benefit of sustainable blue growth. Speaking at the World Ocean Summit in Portugal earlier this month, Commissioner Karmenu Vella said: “If our oceans are not healthy, our economy falls ill. Global maritime challenges require global solutions. I am committed to work intensively to define Europe’s role in international ocean governance, for a sustainable blue economy and blue growth”.
As the use of marine resources continues to increase around the globe, the existing international ocean governance framework could be ineffective in addressing resulting maritime challenges, particularly in the 60 per cent of the oceans that are beyond national jurisdictions. The consultation therefore asks European and international stakeholders – international organisations, state actors, NGOs, business, the research community, academia and civil society – for their views on the best path of action and the EU’s role. The consultation is available in all EU languages and in an on-line survey format (English only). It will run until 15th September 2015.To complement the consultation, Commissioner Vella will also be meeting personally with stakeholders and international partners to gather their views and discuss possible ways forward. The listening tour will kick off with a visit to Cork, Ireland in early July.

Unimak Maritime Group’s Russian scallops verified Friend of the Sea sustainable

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 25 febbraio 2014

Friend of the Sea announces the certification of North Kurilsk Seiner Fleet Base scallops. The company is the Russian partner of Unimak Maritime Group. The scallops are fished in the Pacific Ocean (Kuril Island and Okhotsk areas) where this species is abundant. North Kurilsk Seiner Fleet Base is a sister company to Kamchatka’s Tymlatskii Rybokombinat, which together with Unimak, obtained certification for sockeye and pink salmon. The audit was run by an accredited international body and based on Friend of the Sea strict social and environmental requirements.Use of dredges is authorized as the level of scallop population is so high that the gear does not touch the seabed. Vessels are operated at due distance from the coast: 12 miles for driftnets and 1.2 miles for traps. Crabs and echinoderms are immediately released alive when they accidentally enter the traps.Discard of scallops fishing tends to zero. This achievement is neatly under 8% maximum allowed level of discard according to Friend of the Sea.The reliability of the company is also proved by its modern fleet whose fishing vessels are mandatorily registered with Russian Federation’s flag.”Unimak Maritime is proud of Tymlatski’s double Friend of the Sea certification.” comments Mr William Turner, Unimak Maritime Group’s President. “This further recognition confirms once again our deep sense of responsibility and attention to environmental conservation.”

International tourism to reach one billion in 2012

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 17 gennaio 2012

International tourist arrivals grew by over 4% in 2011 to 980 million, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. With growth expected to continue in 2012, at a somewhat slower rate, international tourist arrivals are on track to reach the milestone one billion mark later this year.International tourist arrivals grew by 4.4% in 2011 to a total 980 million, up from 939 million in 2010, in a year characterised by a stalled global economic recovery, major political changes in the Middle East and North Africa and natural disasters in Japan. By region, Europe (+6%) was the best performer, while by subregion South-America (+10%) topped the ranking. Contrary to previous years, growth was higher in advanced economies (+5.0%) than in emerging ones (+3.8%), due largely to the strong results in Europe, and the setbacks in the Middle East and North Africa.“International tourism hit new records in 2011 despite the challenging conditions,” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai. “For a sector directly responsible for 5% of the world’s GDP, 6% of total exports and employing one out of every 12 people in advanced and emerging economies alike these results are encouraging, coming as they do at a time in which we urgently need levers to stimulate growth and job creation,” he added.

International Tourism: First results of 2011

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 12 maggio 2011

Asia and the Pacific, the region with one of the fastest growth rates in 2010, saw its pace of growth slow down (+6%), although from a very strong performance the previous year. Results were better than expected for Europe (+6%), boosted by the recovery of Central and Eastern Europe, and the temporary redistribution of travel to destinations in Southern and Mediterranean Europe due to developments in North Africa (-9%) and the Middle East (-10%). The Americas (+5%) was in line with the world average, with strong results for South America and the Caribbean, but rather weaker growth in North and Central America. Worldwide, international tourist arrivals surpassed 124 million in the first two months of 2011, up from 119 million in the same period of 2010, with emerging economies (+6%) continuing to grow at a faster pace than advanced ones (+4%). According to the forecast prepared by UNWTO at the beginning of the year, international tourist arrivals are projected to increase by some 4% to 5% in 2011. The impact of recent developments in North Africa and the Middle East, as well as the tragic earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March, are not expected to substantially affect this projected growth. Results for North East Asia, North Africa and the Middle East are below initial forecasts, but destinations in Europe and South America are so far performing better than anticipated. On the whole, and as in previous similar situations, a temporary redistribution of traffic, together with an increase in intra-regional travel as opposed to interregional, is likely to occur.

International tourist arrivals

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 4 settembre 2010

They are estimated to have grown by 7% in the first half of 2010. While growth was modest in April as a consequence of the closure of European airspace following the eruption of a volcano in Iceland, results were strong in May (+10%) and June (+8%). Data available for July indicates that growth is set to continue at a steady rate. Growth was positive in all world regions, led by a robust performance of emerging economies expanding at 8% compared to 6% in advanced economies. Asia and the Pacific (+14%) and the Middle East (+20%), where results were already positive in the second half of 2009, continue to lead growth in the first half of 2010 with the majority of destinations in both regions posting double digit growth rates. Asia in particular is experiencing a very dynamic rebound, with strong results from Sri Lanka (+49%), Japan (+36%), Vietnam (+35%), Myanmar (+35%), Hong Kong (China) (+23%), Macao (China) (+23%), Singapore (+23%), Fiji (+22%) and the Maldives (+21%). Thailand (+14%) posted encouraging results in spite of the political unrest early this year. As in previous occasions, such as the Asian financial and economic crisis (1997-1998), the SARS outbreak (2003), and the tsunami (2004), Asia has once again shown a strong capacity for recovery. International tourism has been a driving force in a region – currently the second most visited region in the world,- with 181 million international tourist arrivals (21% of world total) and international tourism receipts of US$ 204 billion (24% of world total) in 2009. In the Americas (+7%), Central and South America show steady growth, as does North America. Growth has been slower in the Caribbean but results are still markedly improved as compared to 2008 and 2009. Europe (+2%) shows the slowest recovery but results from recent months are slightly more positive. Although recovery has not yet returned to Northern Europe, both Western and Southern Mediterranean Europe show reasonable growth. Africa (+7%), the only region to grow in 2009, maintained this momentum during the first half of 2010. International tourism receipts are expected to lag somewhat behind arrivals in many destinations. Following major shocks, volume (arrivals) tends to recover faster than income (receipts) as travellers travel closer to home, for shorter periods of time and seek value for money, while on the supply side increased competition has been driving prices down. This was also the case following the Asian economic and financial crisis and after the 2001 September 11 terrorist attacks.

The war in Afghanistan

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 18 gennaio 2010

Glasgow on 15 and 16 March 2010 University High are ranking soldiers, scholars, diplomats and journalists are to discuss the war in Afghanistan. The event, hosted by the Scottish Centre for War Studies, will examine how the conflict has developed to this point and how it is likely to develop in the future following the announcement that President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Gordon Brown have opted for a surge of almost 40,000 troops to try and force a decisive result in Afghanistan. Dr Alex Marshall, Scottish Centre for War Studies at the University of Glasgow: “This war is the most crucial issue left over from the attacks of 11th September 2001. In the past 9 years the vision of the international American-led intervention in Afghanistan has moved from that of a successful new paradigm in warfare to a potential quagmire on the scale of Vietnam. The decision to escalate the conflict will have a profound effect on the development of the Middle East and South Asia, to say nothing of the consequences for the Afghan people themselves.” Speakers attending the event entitled: ‘Afghanistan’s Next Crossroads: Ten Years of International Intervention, 2001-2011’ include: Major General Andrew Mackay (retired), who commanded British forces in Helmand province in 2007; Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles the United Kingdom Ambassador in Kabul from 2007-9; Professors Marc Genest and Andrea Dew, Directors of the Center for Irregular Warfare and Armed Groups at the Naval War College in Newport Rhode Island; Dr Antonio Giustozzi (author of Koran, Kalashnikov and Laptop); Professor Sultan Barakat, founder of the Post-War Reconstruction and Development Unit at the University of York; Harsh Pant a lecturer at Kings College London; Mr Abbie Aryan a member of the Department for International Development; and Michael Thomas, head of the Foreign Office’s Afghan Study Unit.
The Scottish Centre for War Studies is particularly delighted to announce that Professor Hew Strachan, the Chichele Professor of War Studies as Oxford University, will present the conference’s closing address. Founder and first director of the Scottish Centre for War Studies in 1995, Professor Strachan is the UK’s leading scholar of modern military history. Because of his vision and support the centre has become one of the leading centres in the UK for strategic studies, with a thriving research centre and a healthy graduate master’s programme.  The conference marks the 15th anniversary of the foundation of the Scottish Centre for War Studies at the University of Glasgow.
