American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 6 febbraio 2019

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) today announced February 2019 as Lead with Languages Advocacy Month. As part of its greater mission to improve and expand the teaching and learning of all languages at all levels of instruction, ACTFL has planned a number of activities and initiatives throughout the month to celebrate and bring awareness to foreign language education throughout the United States. As part of Lead with Languages Advocacy Month, ACTFL is launching its Lead with Languages Scholarship Program and Foreign Language Enrollment Drive, as well as a first-of-its kind survey on the value of language in the U.S. economy. The survey will provide the most complete view to date on foreign language need and availability in the U.S. economy. This never-before-seen industry report will include new data emphasizing the critical need for language skills in the workplace, and the impact of these skills in the U.S. economy.“Today’s world is increasingly interconnected and interdependent. In the 21st Century, knowing a second language is not only beneficial, but necessary for success in business and life. Lead with Languages Advocacy Month allows us to direct attention to an issue that is often deprioritized for larger initiatives,” said Howie Berman, CAE, Executive Director of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).He continued, “The reality is that language skills fuel the global economy. Universities are scrutinizing applicants for multilingual candidates to identify future world leaders. Employers and businesses are seeking applicants who can navigate the modern economy. Learning another language allows students to develop both of these skill sets. Our hope is that these initiatives will not only help students enhance their own personal language skills, but one day pass along those skills to the next generation as well.”

Interaxon Inc. Announces French, German and Spanish Languages for Its Muse Meditation Headband

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 8 gennaio 2018

Sydney, perla australianaSydney. Interaxon, the world leader in consumer brain-sensing technology, today announced its intention to expand internationally in 2018 in EMEA, LatAm, and Australia based on success in North America and demand from these markets. The company also introduced a new software development kit (SDK) for partners to create applications using the Muse brain-sensing technology. Finally, the brain health company announced that it is working with virtual reality / augmented reality (VR/AR) developer partners to bring its brain-sensing technology to the world of VR/AR, empowering users to interact with their VR/AR environments through brain signals. The announcement was made at Digital Times Press Conference preceding the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, being held in Las Vegas, Nevada, January 9 – 12. Launched in 2014, Muse has been Interaxon’s flagship product, a brain-sensing headband that uses EEG sensor technology to give users insight into their meditative process and customized, moment-by-moment feedback and guidance in developing their focused attention. Brain sensors measure users’ activity and feeds the data to an app that guides users through meditation exercises. With Muse, Interaxon has successfully brought the practice of meditation to a broader consumer market through partnerships with Amazon, Best Buy and Target. Building on successful consumer adoption, the company has developed tools for the clinical, professional, corporate and wider wellness community with its Muse Connect product, offering Saas-based solutions. Interaxon has also entered into a partnership with fashion eyewear company Safilo to co-create a product that embeds Muse’s brain-sensing technology into fashionable SMITH sports frames to provide cognitive training to athletes and support their peak performance.
This year at CES, Muse is making several new announcements that build upon its success in the consumer and health professional markets:Interaxon will be expanding into new markets in 2018, including EMEA, LatAm, and Australia, and its flagship Muse product will be available in French, German and Spanish as the first new languages in its expansion.
Interaxon has been developing a VR/AR application kit for its brain-sensing technology and will showcase an entirely new category of consumer technology, using advances in low-cost brain sensors for head-worn virtual and mixed-reality systems. This neuroadaptive technology is based on the detection of evoked brain responses to visual, sensory and cognitive stimulation, to improve human interaction with augmented and virtual worlds. Through software development toolkits and licensing, Interaxon is making its core technology and platform available to a broader partner base across all form factors, including the Muse headband, VR/AR and Lowdown Focus glasses. With the Smith Lowdown Focus glasses mpowered by Muse, the company is demonstrating additional sensors beyond EEG and how they can be used by athletes to measure and monitor their athletic performance across a range of metrics, including efficiency, posture and balance in sports like yoga and cycling.

The Language of Obama’s Jobs

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 17 settembre 2011

Screenshot of, which went live af...

Image via Wikipedia

Here’s some of what’s new and interesting on The Audit, the business desk of the Columbia Journalism Review, for now or over the weekend.
• On Language: The Audit’s Ryan Chittum says that on last go-round on economics legislation, President Obama’s major bill was called the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which got translated to “stimulus,” which is what the press and everybody else called the $800 billion legislation. This time, though, the wonky Democrats learned their lesson, and it’s just “American,” “Jobs,” and “Act.” Chittum graphically tracks how the press is playing along, showing clearly how governments shape the narrative.
• The Why: Correlation, we know, is not causation. But that’s a hard lesson to internalize for the press, which, Chittum says, insists on slapping a larger narrative on almost every scrap of news. The perils of such instant analysis is apparent in the wildly different takes by Reuters and Bloomberg on the public response to Obama’s jobs speech.
• Avoiding Panic: Finally, in Audit Notes, Chittum finds it darkly amusing to read all the euphemisms in this Bloomberg News story reporting on the latest warnings signs of a possible collapse of the European financial system.
• Movie Club! And just for fun, there’s this week’s CJR Summer Movie Club entry—Alysia Santo discusses Fletch, with Chevy Chase as an investigative reporter for a Los Angles newspaper who gets to wear disguises, sleep with sources, and all kinds of fun stuff in pursuit of The Story. If you want to catch all the jokes, Santo writes, you have to watch it twice.
