Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 12 maggio 2020

New York. World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder spoke today with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, following the announcement by the Swedish government that the Malmö International Forum on Holocaust Remembrance and Combating Antisemitism has been postponed until 2021. The forum was planned to take place 20 years after the adoption of the Stockholm Declaration, which recognized the responsibility of the international community and governments to promote and advance Holocaust education, remembrance and research. During the call, Ambassador Lauder expressed his appreciation of the reasons for the decision to delay the “Malmö Forum,” considering the extraordinary global circumstances brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. He praised the Prime Minister for his commitment to furthering Holocaust remembrance and combating antisemitism. In January, the Swedish government endorsed the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism, including the IHRA’s guiding examples of current day antisemitism.President Lauder thanked Prime Minister Löfven for his partnership in the fight against the scourge of antisemitism. “Antisemitism in all its forms must be combated vigorously by determined action by both governments and civil society,” Lauder said. “The World Jewish Congress is proud of our friendship and cooperation with the Swedish government over the past several years that has resulted in the enhancement and strengthening of such international cooperation.” The Forum, an initiative of the government of Sweden, has been planned as a gathering of heads of state and government from member and observer countries of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), European Union Member States, the Nordic countries and a small number of other countries and IHRA Permanent International Partners. In addition, researchers, experts and representatives of civil society have also been invited to participate. National delegations have been encouraged to present pledges consisting of concrete initiatives, and an outcome document is intended to come out of the Forum.“We are looking forward to continued work together with the Swedish government on this important endeavor, the impact of which will be felt well beyond 2021,” Lauder said.

WJC President Ronald S. Lauder calls for unity in fight against hate in address to Vatican officials

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 11 novembre 2019

ROME – World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder delivered the keynote address at an event at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, an institution of the Holy See. The event, Human Fraternity: A Jewish Reflection for Common Coexistence, brought together leading figures within the Catholic Church, Jewish community officials, and members of the diplomatic community to encourage and foster dialogue between the Abrahamic faiths. In his remarks, Lauder emphasized the importance of mutual respect and understanding between all religions and reiterated his endorsement of the spirit and values outlined in the Abu Dhabi Declaration on Human Fraternity, heralding it as a “defining international document” that deserves the respect of world Jewry.
Speaking those assembled, Lauder said, “Human fraternity should always guide our actions. The concept of human fraternity has immediate implications for our world and our time. Firstly, we must counter-hate. Racism is absolutely unacceptable. We must eradicate it. Antisemitism is absolutely unacceptable. We must eliminate it. Islamophobia is absolutely unacceptable. We must erase it. Attacks on Christian communities and on Christian individuals are absolutely unacceptable. We must stop them — and prevent their recurrence.“But the campaign against racism, antisemitism, islamophobia and anti-Christian attacks will be infinitely more effective if it is united. Christians should lead the defense of Jews and Muslims. Muslims should lead the defense of Christians and Jews. Jews should lead the defense of Muslims and Christians. And we must all stand together against racism.”Others program participants included Father Nuno da Silva Gonçalves SJ, Rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University, and H.E. Cardinal Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, President of the Pontifical Council for the Interreligious Dialogue, who thanked President Lauder for his crucial recognition, on behalf of world Jewry, of the importance of the the Abu Dhabi declaration. The initiative for this conference was born following the co-signing of the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together by Pope Francis and Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, in February 2019 in Abu Dhabi. Inter-faith cooperation can make an important contribution to peace around the world and to better understanding between communities in our societies. For decades the World Jewish Congress has long spearheaded dialogue between the three Abrahamic religions – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam – and has established a close working relationship with the Holy See.

WJC President Lauder condemns vicious attack on California synagogue

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 28 aprile 2019

JERUSALEM – The World Jewish Congress is horrified by the vicious attack unleashed today against a Chabad synagogue near San Diego, just six months after the deadly shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh which claimed 11 lives. WJC President Ronald S. Lauder expressed his deep sorrow and condolences to the victims of the California attack, after the San Diego sheriff confirmed that one person had been killed and three others wounded.“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Jewish community of Poway, California today as their worst nightmare unfolds. There is absolutely no justification or explanation for such violence, and it is inconceivable that, yet again, innocent people have been targeted simply for their religion and for choosing to attend a place of worship,” Lauder said.
“We strongly condemn this heinous attack and extend our deepest sympathies to the victims, their loved ones, and the entire community. We pray for the swift recovery of the injured and trust that justice will be served against the perpetrator of this attack. There is no room for such hate-filled violence in our society. People of all faiths must stand together and declare that we will never tolerate such hatred,” Lauder said.

WJC President Lauder in aftermath of Pittsburgh attack

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 30 ottobre 2018

NEW YORK – In the aftermath of the deadly shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder is sounding the alarm on the very real threats facing Jewish communities worldwide and urging government authorities to ramp up security efforts to prevent such an attack from happening again.“The horrific act of terror that took place on Saturday at the Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue in Pittsburgh has left all Jewish communities, both in the US and abroad, in a state of absolute shock. We have long warned about the sharp rise in antisemitism, on both the far-right and the far-left and have prayed that the many incidences that we have witnessed of late, of vandalism and desecration of property, would never end in loss of life.
“This Shabbat, our worst nightmares came true. Innocent people were killed and wounded for the simple crime of being Jewish. This was an attack specifically targeting the Jewish community, in a deliberate and callous manifestation of antisemitism and hatred, and it should serve as a wake-up call to all Americans that such horror can and has happened here. We must be vigilant in making sure that this never happens again.“The Pittsburgh police department were quick to respond to this heinous attack, and for that we are grateful. It is imperative that the authorities across the US, and in every country that has a Jewish community, take every threat seriously, no matter how innocuous it might seem. It is the responsibility of governments and all official authorities to ensure that the Jewish communities, and their institutions, are secure and protected.“The World Jewish Congress’ Security of Communities Department is actively working with national and local authorities in more than 50 countries to help to provide some of our communities with the proper infrastructure and crisis management tools to defend themselves against any threat. We will continue to do so with vigor, and we stand ready to assist in every way possible.“Each and every one of us, from average citizen to government official, has the moral obligation to stand up and strongly condemn every form of antisemitism or xenophobia as it rears its head. We cannot allow ourselves to become desensitized to the very real dangers that can unfold. Vandalism, hate speech, and other demonstrations of the kind must not be ignored or downplayed. We must be united in unequivocal denunciation and clear in our message that we will not let terror win.”

International Committee of the Red Cross, World Jewish Congress to hold commemorative event drawing lessons from Holocaust

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 24 aprile 2015

ginevraGENEVA the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the World Jewish Congress (WJC) will host a commemorative event in Geneva, Switzerland on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camps. The conference “Remembering the Shoah: The ICRC and the International Community’s Efforts in Responding to Genocide and Protecting Civilians” will provide a forward-looking perspective on the international community’s efforts to protect civilians and prevent atrocities.Ahead of the gathering, an exhibition about the ICRC during the Holocaust, showcasing relevant material from the ICRC archives, will be opened at the Humanitarium in Geneva.Following will be speeches by ICRC President Peter Maurer and WJC President Ronald S. Lauder, and a panel discussion moderated by WJC CEO Robert Singer and including President Maurer, the American Holocaust historian Deborah Lipstadt and the Canadian physician, writer, and humanitarian activist James Orbinski. The event will be attended by senior members of Geneva’s diplomatic corps and reflect on the international community’s failure to respond vigorously to the Nazi mass murder of Jews during World War II.“We hope that this important conference will allow us to learn from the past and help ensure that humanitarian organizations such as the ICRC can fulfill their critical role in preventing genocide from ever happening again,” declared WJC President Lauder.
The conference will also reflect on how legal and political tools to respond to large-scale killings have developed since the Holocaust.During World War II, the ICRC, headquartered in Geneva, was the principal humanitarian institution maintaining communications with both the Allied and Axis powers. While the ICRC did provide assistance and protection to allied prisoners of war held by Nazi Germany, it could not do the same for Jewish deportees as Berlin refused all humanitarian requests to help Jewish victims. At the same time, the ICRC did not publicly denounce the deportation of Jews to concentration camps. In 1995, the then-president of the ICRC, Cornelio Sommaruga, apologized, stating: “Our failure to speak out at that time was a moral defeat.”
