Major League Baseball Selects AWS as its Official Provider for Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Deep Learning

Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an company (NASDAQ: AMZN), announced that Major League Baseball (MLB) has chosen AWS as its official provider for machine learning, artificial intelligence, and deep learning workloads. In extending its long-standing relationship, MLB will use AWS machine learning services to continue development of Statcast—the tracking technology that runs on AWS to analyze player performance for every game—and develop new technologies to support MLB Clubs in driving innovative fan experiences and engagement across all 30 Major League ballparks. In addition, MLB will work with the Amazon ML Solutions Lab to amplify game statistical data integrations within broadcasts, including MLB Network, and live digital distribution, such as and the MLB At Bat app, using machine learning, creating more personalized viewer experiences tailored for each market and geographic region. AWS’s broad range of cloud-based machine learning services will enable MLB to eliminate the manual, time-intensive processes associated with record keeping and statistics, such as scorekeeping, capturing game notes, and classifying pitches. By using Amazon SageMaker, MLB is empowering its developers and data scientists to automate these tasks as they learn to quickly and easily build, train, and deploy machine learning models at scale. For example, MLB and Amazon ML Solutions Lab are using Amazon SageMaker to test how well they can accurately predict pitches by evaluating the pitcher, batter, catcher, and situation to predict the type and location of the next pitch. MLB also intends to leverage Amazon SageMaker and the natural language processing service Amazon Comprehend to build a language model that would create analysis for live games in the tone and style of iconic announcers to capture that distinct broadcast essence baseball fans know and revere.

Tencent Partners with Age of Learning to Launch ABCmouse Immersive English Learning Program for Children in China

Tencent and Age of Learning, Inc., announced the launch of a new ABCmouseTM English learning program in China, an expert-designed immersive language learning product that provides Chinese children with an essential foundation for English conversational fluency and literacy.The new ABCmouse program was developed through an innovative partnership between the leading digital children’s education company in the U.S. and one of largest Internet companies in the world. Age of Learning’s team of child development and language learning experts created the ABCmouse English learning curriculum, currently comprised of more than 5,000 engaging learning activities organized into hundreds of lessons and a structured learning path, based on extensive research on second-language acquisition. Tencent has expertly integrated this curriculum into a new ABCmouse mobile application and website, and is responsible for product development, marketing, sales, and customer support.Closely collaborating with Age of Learning, Tencent localized the ABCmouse program for China, including integration of ABCmouse with QQ, China’s leading instant messaging platform serving 783 million monthly active users, and with WeChat / Weixin, China’s leading social network and content platform serving more than 1 billion monthly active users. Lessons include engaging instructional animations featuring an English teacher and six children in an international school setting, along with more than 5,000 interactive English learning activities including games, songs, puzzles, art activities, and books. Speech recognition technology has also been incorporated into the newly designed product, prompting children to record their voices as they become confident and proficient in speaking English words, phrases and sentences. The immediate feedback provided by the system helps children develop excellent English pronunciation and supports comprehensive vocabulary acquisition.

Learning city and cultural diversity

unescoRoma Giovedì 16 Febbraio 2017, ore 9:00 Palazzo Firenze, Loggia del Primaticcio Piazza di Firenze, 27 International Conference Learning City and Cultural Diversity Roma, Il Dipartimento di Scienze della Formazione dell’Università Roma Tre, in collaborazione con la Commissione Italiana Nazionale per l’Unesco, intende realizzare, un convegno scientifico a carattere internazionale sui temi relativi a learning city e diversità culturale, che rappresentano anche alcune delle priorità dell’Agenda 2030 sullo Sviluppo Sostenibile delle Nazioni Unite. L’obiettivo dell’iniziativa è di presentare, in una prospettiva nazionale ed internazionale, il quadro d’insieme, teorico, metodologico ed esperienziale, sul tema delle learning cities. Le città, intese come metafora ed espressione territoriale, sociale, politica e culturale, possono essere mobilitate per dimostrare come usare efficacemente le loro risorse in tutti i settori, al fine di promuovere e arricchire il loro potenziale umano, sostenere la crescita personale lungo l’arco della vita, ma soprattutto dare impulso allo sviluppo dell’uguaglianza e della giustizia sociale, insieme con il mantenimento di una coesione sociale armoniosa. Tale posizione è inoltre arricchita dal concetto di human security, ormai parte integrante del lessico del settore politico, dei governi, del personale militare e non-governativo, che abbraccia questioni quali il crimine organizzato e non, i diritti umani e la buona governance, i conflitti armati, il genocidio e i crimini di massa, la salute e lo sviluppo, le risorse e l’ambiente. Inoltre il convegno si presenta come opportunità per stabilire e consolidare rapporti di collaborazione tra soggetti e istituzioni interessate al tema, appartenenti a diversi sistemi e ambiti istituzionali, culturali e della società civile; si prefigge così l’obiettivo di pervenire alla costituzione di un tavolo inter-istituzionale teso alla definizione di un documento condiviso di cui l’Ateneo di Roma Tre possa essere promotore. Quality Assurance in universities

Quality Assurance processes used in universities must allow more space for ‘risk taking and failure’ as this is essential for stimulating innovation and creativity in higher education. This is one of the recommendations of a new report published this week by the European University Association. The report “Improving quality, enhancing creativity: change process in European higher education institutions” is based on a two-year EC-funded project, that EUA has carried out with partners ACQUIN (the Accreditation, Certification and Quality Assurance Institute, Germany), the Higher Education Academy (UK) and the National University of Ireland, Maynooth.  The project brought together 29 higher education institutions and Quality Assurance (QA) Agencies from 18 different countries to explore what kind of quality assurance processes in teaching and learning (external and internal) can actually support creativity and innovation. In the past, there have been concerns that QA processes can actually inhibit creativity within higher education.
The European University Association, as the representative organisation of both the European universities and the national rectors’ conferences, is the main voice of the higher education community in Europe. EUA’s mission is to promote the development of a coherent system of European higher education and research.
