LIBE Chair highlights the importance of the new data protection rules

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 27 maggio 2018

The Chair of the Civil Liberties Committee, Claude Moraes (S&D, UK), emphasized the “important new rights for citizens” provided by the new rules coming into effect today.Mr Moraes stated: “The General Data Protection Regulation, which takes effect today, means that the EU will lead the way in terms of data protection by providing important new rights for citizens. This is a proud achievement for the European Parliament and the LIBE Committee, which started work on the data protection package in 2011 with the excellent contributions of many outstanding colleagues. From today, citizens will have to give their consent for their personal information to be used, they will be able to ask for their data to be deleted, and to know when their information has been hacked. The new rules will apply across the EU for the first time and have strong enforcement powers, which are up to 4% of a company’s annual turnover. The importance of GDPR protection was recently highlighted by the scandal involving Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, which demonstrated the need for a full package of data protection measures, of which the GDPR is an important first step, to prevent the abuse of data and the profiling of users. It is equally important that EU Member States implement this legislation, and I call on the European Commission to take the appropriate steps to monitor the implementation and application of the GDPR to ensure the protection of all European citizens. The EU is leading by example, and this data protection framework is now seen as the model for many third countries around the world.”

Extraordinary LIBE meeting

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 4 settembre 2015

StrasbourgStrasbourg Monday 7 September 2015, 19.00 – 19.45 Room Winston Churchill (WIC) 200 Emergency relocation mechanism of asylum seekers – proposal for a Council Decision establishing provisional measures in the area of international protection for the benefit of Italy and Greece – debate with Council and Commission representatives on the Council’s general approach.
Parliament is consulted on this temporary emergency relocation mechanism under Article 78(3) of the Treaty. When a permanent relocation system is proposed – which the Commission has said it will do before the end of the year – Parliament will have co-decison power, meaning that it will decide on the permanent scheme on an equal footing with the Council of the EU (member states). This proposal for a decision concerns the “relocation” scheme for transferring asylum seekers from one EU member state to another, i.e. distributing them within the EU. The 20,000 refugees who are outside the EU and who are to be “resettled” in member states are covered by a separate Commission recommendation.
