Life Sciences to create new opportunities for regenerative tissue manufacturing

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 12 dicembre 2019

GE Healthcare Life Sciences and Advanced Solutions Life Sciences (ASLS) will enter into a strategic R&D and distribution partnership that sets out to personalize tissue regeneration. The integration of IN Cell Analyzer and BioAssemblyBot® systems technologies will embed cellular-level assessments into the 3D-bioprinting workflow used to create human tissue models.
Bioprinted tissues are small in size and die quickly, due to an inability to engineer small blood vessels – the body’s supply network. ASLS’ patented Angiomics® technology enables bioprinted microvessels to self-assemble into functional capillary beds, which deliver nutrients, oxygen, and hormones to the 3D tissue model and remove waste. This partnership would allow life scientists and tissue engineers to quickly design, build and image living, vascularized 3D tissues in a single, agile process.Emmanuel Abate, General Manager of Genomics & Cellular Research, GE Healthcare Life Sciences, says: “Printing multi-material 3D objects inside of microwell plates allows scientists to efficiently move away from traditional 2D monocultures on plastic, to 3D discovery and cytotoxicity models that more accurately reflect native biology and disease. By combining this flexibility and precision of the BioAssemblyBot® with the image quality and speed of the IN Cell Analyzer 6500 HS confocal screening platform, the prospect of automating high content screening in 3D models can become a reality.” Currently, biopharmaceutical companies test their drugs in 2D models and animal models. Precise 3D models provide a more physiologically relevant environment for drug testing because they mimic human reactions.

Progetto di ricerca dell’Università di Parma sull’additive manufacturing

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 18 novembre 2019

Cummins Implementing New Technologies With Potential to Revolutionize Manufacturing

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 18 aprile 2019

Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) is adding to its additive manufacturing capabilities by investing in a new, high-precision 3D metal printing technology called binder jet. This investment is just the next step in Cummins’ plan to revolutionize its manufacturing processes and accelerate the company’s trajectory toward scaled production in additive technologies.
Binder jetting is a technology where a print head moves across a bed of powder and selectively deposits a liquid binding agent in the shape of the section, bonding these areas together to form a solid part one layer at a time. Depending on complexity of the part or component, the technology can print 60 to 100 times faster than laser-based printing processes.Cummins’ additive manufacturing strategy is part of the company’s implementation of Industry 4.0, the trend of automation, cloud computing and data-driven technology that some call the “fourth industrial revolution.” The company is initially focusing on printing low-volume parts as it studies how best to use 3D technology in higher volume manufacturing.Cummins recently sold its first additively manufactured metal part – a low-volume bracket without a current supplier – printed on a GE Additive Concept Laser M2, moving it a significant step closer to fulfilling the potential of additive manufacturing in production. With the addition of binder jet technology, Cummins will be able to additively manufacture medium- to large-sized complex parts, reliably, at high throughput and at a comparatively lower cost. The company currently has two Concept Laser M2 DMLM machines; one is installed at the Cummins’ Technical Center in Columbus, Indiana and the other, along with two other 3D metal printers, is installed at the large Cummins Research and Development Center in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. With the addition of GE Additive Binder Jet printers, Cummins is now able to focus on its strategy for higher-volume production.
Cummins is a strategic partner for GE Additive, which is quickly scaling its binder jet technology, first into pilot lines, then into a complete, industrialized factory solution – expected to be commercially available in early 2021.

Regulations Promote Greater Innovation in European Automotive Paint Additives Market

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 3 ottobre 2012

London The mature European automotive paint additives market is being driven mainly by new technology and product innovation. Sizeable R&D investments are aimed at developing competitively priced, high performance additives that meet legislative requirements.New analysis from Frost & Sulliva (http://www.chemicals. frost.com), Strategic Analysis of the European Automotive Paint Additives Market, finds that the market earned revenues of €104.2 million in 2011 and estimates this to reach €159.8 million in 2017. Rheology modifiers, surfactants, foam-control agents, driers and catalysts and preservatives are the product segments covered in the research.Limits on volatile organic chemicals (VOC) content and Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances (REACH) have provided opportunities for innovation and ushered new technology trends in the additives industry. Such trends have resulted in the development of novel products like zero-VOC additives, multifunctional additives and self-healing additives.
“The implementation of laws and regulations on VOC limits has triggered the shift from solvent-based to water-based coatings, promoting market prospects,” noted Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Elamuhil Pari. “Although water-based coatings are generally low in VOC, they require a greater quantity of additives to achieve the properties of good quality paint, thereby boosting the demand for additives.”Amidst overall optimism, pricing pressures remain an area of concern. Paints account for only 2-3 per cent of the total investments in automotive manufacture. Car manufacturers are, consequently, willing to pay only a very low price for automotive paints.“Paint manufacturers are under constant pressure to reduce their prices,” explained Pari. “This pressure, in turn, is passed onto additive manufacturers, as additives are added only in very small quantities, resulting in low revenue generation.” Vendors are expected to sell additives along with resins, pigments and topcoats as an integrated package to facilitate paint chemistry for automobile OEMs. Innovative products that offer a balance between quality, cost, optimal usage and environment-friendliness are also anticipated to increase the chances of price rise in this market. “Paint additive manufacturers have to innovate and adapt quickly to changing technologies like nano-technology and smart-coating formulations to stay ahead of the competition,” concluded Pari.

Manufacturing Jobs are Evolving, Say Reed.co.uk

Between Manufactures and Electricity Buildings

Between Manufactures and Electricity Buildings (Photo credit: The Field Museum Library)

London, (PRNewswire) With new technologies altering the manufacturing process, it seems that jobs are changing tooThe manufacturing sector is changing. Where lathes, drills, hammers, and moulding machines were once commonplace, highly-automated machines now dominate factory floors. While many people fear that new technology may replace human jobs, reed.co.uk believes that this may actually lead to an increase in the number of manufacturing, design, engineering, and construction jobs. For over 100 years, the United States was the world’s leading manufacturer. Yet, in the decade from 2000 to 2010, the number of jobs in manufacturing fell to approximately 33% of its original figure. Paul Markillie from The Economist believes that this decline is a result of the increase in the number of businesses outsourcing their production process, combined with the emergence of China as a manufacturing powerhouse. But manufacturing is still extremely beneficial for the economy. According to a report by Susan Helper of Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, manufacturing firms are more likely to introduce new and innovative products.Although manufacturing currently only makes up 11% of America’s GDP, the sector is also responsible for 68% of domestic spending on research and development. This, according to Helper, will help to reduce trade deficits, and create new opportunities to develop a “clean” economy and green energy. With all of this technological innovation, Markillie suggests that manufacturing is currently embracing a “third industrial revolution”, and is likely to change beyond recognition. While factory floors are becoming relatively deserted, office blocks nearby are full of designers, IT specialists, accountants, marketing staff, customer relation managers, and cleaners, all of whom contribute in their own specific way to the production process.Michael Idelchik, head of advanced technologies at GE Global Research, told the Economist that people have a narrow-minded view of manufacturing employment. “If you look at everyone who contributes, it is a very large occupation,” Idelchik added.
