COVID-19: EU institutions take action to procure life-saving medical equipment

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 27 marzo 2020

Last week, the Commission set up a scheme to gather medical equipment (through rescEU) so that the necessary supplies to combat COVID-19 can quickly get to member states facing shortages of equipment. This equipment is needed to treat infected patients, protect health care workers and help slow down the spread of the virus.Parliament is working with member states to swiftly approve 40 out of 50 million EUR for intensive care medical equipment such as ventilators and personal protective equipment, such as reusable masks.Member states are also joining forces under the Joint Procurement Agreement to buy personal protective equipment, respiratory ventilators and items necessary for coronavirus testing. Working together in this way will give them a stronger position on the world market.Commenting on the Commission’s proposal, the Chair of the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee, Pascal Canfin (Renew, FR) said: “Last week, Europe took several historic decisions to counter COVID-19, including its impact on the EU economy. We do not say this enough and we do not say it loud enough. Europe is doing everything it can to save lives. The EU Civil Protection Mechanism has previously saved EU citizens in the midst of earthquakes, hurricanes and floods and fighting forest fires. We are now, for the very first time, using EU funds under rescEU to support member states efforts to combat the virus by ensuring we have much needed medical and protective equipment. It is EU solidarity in action.”“The current crisis also shows that having sufficient means to match the needs of the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism programme post-2020 is important, as per Parliament’s position,” concludes Canfin.

TTP Ventus Introduces New High-performance Micropumps for Medical and Life Science Markets

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 7 novembre 2019

TTP Ventus Ltd, a manufacturer of high-performance, silent micropumps for medical and life science markets, has announced the introduction of a range of new pumps that extend performance, delivering higher flow rates, higher pressures, and longer lifetimes. This opens up new product innovation possibilities for applications including microfluidics research, medical diagnostics, therapeutic devices and wearables.Among the pumps to be displayed at COMPAMED, the new HP Series has been designed for applications requiring high pressure, with the first model delivering in excess of 800 mBar, doubling what was available with previous models. The ability to generate such high pressures from a small, controllable, and non-pulsatile pump opens up exciting opportunities in microfluidics, particularly in so-called pressure-driven-flow or air-over-liquid systems. By moving the pump close to where the pressure or vacuum is needed, system complexity and size can be reduced significantly. The new LT Series was developed for applications requiring long lifetimes, typically 5,000 hours or more. These models offer increased pneumatic performance combined with long lifetime. TTP Ventus plans to extend pump lifetime even further in the near future, and expects to announce its first 10,000-hour pump in 2020. In addition to these offerings, TTP Ventus has extended its BL and XP Series with four additional pumps. These provide increased flow rates of up to 2.1 litres per minute, enabling faster inflation with blood pressure cuffs or therapeutic cushions for example. The new pumps maintain the small size and silent operation of existing models, enabling discrete, wearable products which were not previously possible. Their increased efficiency is valuable for battery-powered products, while precise controllability means that components such as proportional valves can be made redundant.

A newly designed website at details how the Global Telehealth Network (GTN) plans to reduce health disparities by providing free online consultations for medically underserved areas.GTN is a nonprofit organization of physician volunteers who provide pro bono assistance for doctors and other health workers who are on the ground in under-resourced countries, refugee camps, conflict zones and disaster areas, as well as in underserved areas of the U.S.The organization is currently recruiting additional physician volunteers in primary care and a broad range of specialties.“While some physicians serve with medical or surgical missions, most of us can’t afford the time, expense and risks involved in traveling to distant places to provide hands-on care,” said Dr. Higgins. “However, providing online consults through videoconferencing is an attractive alternative. Meanwhile, those who serve with missions can use our network to offer year-round assistance to the same areas where they make periodic visits.”The organization is finding substantial interest from physicians who like the idea of working from their own homes or offices to save lives half-way around the world without having to travel there.GTN is also seeking contributions from donors to support the pilot projects in Tanzania and Uganda, as well as development of a software algorithm to match requesting doctors and other health workers with consultants. Through artificial intelligence and machine learning, the algorithm will continue to improve its ability to match each health worker with the most appropriate physician volunteer.

The companies shall jointly receive support from India-Israel Industrial R&D and Technological Innovation Fund (I4F) for their $4.9 Million project to co-develop and to provide clinical validation, and evidence of the efficacy of radiology Al based tools in India as per I4F norms. The final developed project will be able to assist as a primary screening method for major diseases in large scale screenings. For example, World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 3.6 million people with TB are missed by health systems every year and do not receive adequate care. This is primarily because patients with TB may present with mild or no symptoms, particularly early on. Many affected people arrive at clinics too late with advanced disease or multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB), which is difficult to treat and more likely to cause death. One of the key strategies to tackling TB is early diagnosis. Unfortunately, sputum testing is only 50% accurate and frequently misses the disease in its early stages. Both companies will focus on development of AI-based Chest X-ray interpretation tool for TB which can help address the gap.Speaking of the initiative, Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals said, “When it comes to health, the promise of AI to provide access and improve outcomes in very intriguing. There is a critical need to provide good healthcare access in remote and rural communities, and we believe this initiative will allow us the opportunity to make significant advances in this area. Apollo’s clinical and scientific depth and Zebra-Med’s expertise in AI complement each other perfectly. This project is part of our continuing endeavor to design new tools to improve healthcare access and deliver best outcomes to patients at lower cost.” In addition to leveraging clinical depth and breadth of the Apollo Hospitals network, HNG will work in close collaboration with Apollo Radiology International, a distinguished part of Apollo Hospitals, to bring in leadership, experience and technology in Radiology reporting to the project. The partnership will capitalize on the advancements already achieved by Zebra-Med in developing dozens of AI tools. The arsenal of algorithms will include deep learning algorithms for the detection of acute conditions such as brain bleeds in head CTs and Pneumothorax in chest X-ray, detection of breast cancer in mammograms, Osteoporosis in CT scans and 40 other conditions.

The tax is currently suspended until December 2019. The following statement can be attributed to Sara Radcliffe, President & CEO, CLSA:“California Life Sciences Association (CLSA) welcomes the introduction of legislation that places an additional delay on the ill-conceived 2.3% medical device excise tax, until December 2024. Since its inception, this tax has only hindered investment in medical technology research and development.“While our membership, comprised of the nation’s leading medical technology innovators, certainly welcomes an additional 5-year reprieve from the tax, CLSA will continue to advocate for full and permanent repeal, so that the U.S. does not jeopardize our position as a global leader in medical technology innovation. As the voice of California’s life sciences community, we strongly urge our California congressional delegation to support this measure to suspend this counterproductive tax.”
