Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 23 settembre 2019

The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) announced today a new statewide poster contest for middle school students to highlight ways to “go safely” while biking or walking. The contest details were released as part of an education event for Pedestrian Safety Month at Sacramento’s Martin Luther King, Jr. school. The contest is open to all California sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Students in each grade have the chance to win a laptop (first place), tablet (second place) or art set (third place, honorable mention). The prizes are provided courtesy of iHeart Media, a partner of the OTS.During the event, MLK school students had the chance to get a close look at a California Highway Patrol car, practice best ways to cross the street safely and take photos in a pedestrian cut-out booth encouraging walking free of distractions. Students also received bike bells, reflective wristbands, helmet decals and tip cards. The items were also provided by iHeart Media.Pedestrian safety remains a significant traffic safety issue for all age groups. A report by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) projected that more than 6,000 pedestrians were killed nationwide last year, the highest number since 1990.In 2016, the city of Sacramento had the highest rate of pedestrians under the age of 15 that were injured or killed out of 15 California cities with more than 250,000 residents. Sacramento also had the second-highest rate of bicyclists under the age of 15 injured or killed compared to other cities of a similar size over the same time period.Students can learn more about the contest rules, download poster templates, and submit their entries online at The contest ends on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m.A panel of judges from the OTS will review entries. Judging will be based on clarity of message, thoughtfulness, creativity, originality, proper use of traffic laws and relevance to bicycle and/or pedestrian safety. Winners will be announced in December. The OTS administers funding for traffic safety programs statewide with the goal of reducing crashes that result in deaths, injuries, and economic losses. The OTS is a department under the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA).

John Muir Middle School and Health Net Celebrate National No One Eats Alone Day

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 20 febbraio 2019

Students, professional athletes and a corporate leader came together at John Muir Middle School in Los Angeles today to celebrate a positive prevention initiative designed to promote inclusion.Representatives from Health Net, LLC (Health Net) hosted an assembly in honor of National No One Eats Alone® Day, created by the non-profit Beyond Differences™. Students participated in activities designed to teach them about social isolation and the negative impact it can have on a student’s health and academic performance. The students also heard from Chargers Nick Dzubnar and Isaac Rochell who addressed the issue and challenged the students to make a difference at their school. Together, the students then demonstrated inclusion and sat with classmates at lunch who they didn’t know, or who may feel left out. To help, they were given ice breaker topics to discuss to highlight their commonalities.
Social isolation affects millions of students and has been identified as a precursor to bullying, self-harm and community violence. Students have shown that if they are given the tools, they will stand up for others as empathetic and caring activists, not passive bystanders.
The Los Angeles Chargers are partnering with Health Net for National No One Eats Alone Day to raise awareness of social isolation. Health Net also partners with the Chargers for the Chargers’ Play60 camps, which are free youth football camps in the Los Angeles community. John Muir Middle School was one of more than 2,250 schools across the country that celebrated National No One Eats Alone Day. The initiative reached more than one million students in all 50 states. This is the third consecutive year that Health Net has partnered with Beyond Differences™ and California schools for No One Eats Alone Day, which is sponsored by the Centene Charitable Foundation.
