Schengen: MEPs ready for negotiations on temporary checks at national borders

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 28 settembre 2019

• Temporary border controls should be initially limited to two months instead of six
• Maximum extension possible should be one year instead of two
Civil Liberties MEPs agreed to start negotiations with EU ministers to revise time limits and conditions for passport controls within the Schengen area.
The Schengen Borders Code, currently under revision, allows member states to carry out temporary passport or identity card controls at internal borders within the Schengen area, in the event of a serious threat to public order or to internal security.
Parliament and Council negotiators started the talks on the revision of the rules earlier this year, but decided to suspend the negotiations after it became evident that a compromise was not feasible. In a vote on Tuesday, Civil Liberties Committee MEPs gave a green light, by 43 votes in favour, 12 against and 11 abstentions, to resuming the talks and endorsed the composition of the Parliament’s negotiating team. Before the negotiations can start, Plenary will need to give its support to the talks.Civil Liberties MEPs confirmed that they want to reduce the initial period for border controls from six months (as is currently the case) to two months, and to limit any extension to a maximum period of one year, rather than the current maximum limit of two years. More information about the Parliament’s position can be found here.Austria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway currently have internal border checks in place due to the exceptional circumstances resulting from the migratory crisis that started in 2015. In addition, France has internal border checks in place because of a persistent terrorist threat.

The certification recognizes the University’s bachelor’s degree programs in cyber security & networks and computer science. The University of New Haven joined Carnegie Mellon and Old Dominion this year in being named a CAE-CO. The University is the second school in New England to earn this designation, joining Northeastern University. There are currently 21 schools in the United States that feature Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations supported by the NSA.The NSA’s CAE-CO program supports the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education and furthers the goal to broaden the pool of skilled workers capable of supporting a cyber-secure nation. In reviewing the University’s academic programs, cybersecurity outreach, faculty accomplishments, grant activities, and research output, the NSA recognized the University’s ability to effectively prepare students in areas such as wireless security, systems programming, and digital forensics. The University’s Cyber Forensics Research and Education Group, which includes undergraduate and graduate students studying cybersecurity and computer science, has received international attention for, among other discoveries, uncovering vulnerabilities that were addressed in the messaging application WhatsApp and identifying vulnerabilities in a popular virtual reality application.
The University’s programs in cybersecurity and computer science are preparing graduates for careers in a field in which there has been significant growth. Cybersecurity Ventures predicts there will be 3.5 million unfilled cybersecurity positions by 2021, up from one million in 2014. The cybersecurity unemployment rate dropped to zero percent in 2016, and has remained there ever since.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 1 novembre 2018

A time when communities across the country team up to bring attention to diabetes to raise awareness about the everyday realities of diabetes and to offer support to those who have been diagnosed.
World Diabetes Day (WDD) is November 14th. It was created in 1991 by IDF and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. In more than 160 countries around the world, people will participate in events and activities which raise awareness about diabetes. The activities include rides, walks, open houses, and lighting historic buildings and landmarks in blue, the official color for diabetes awareness. There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that often is diagnosed in youth and requires insulin shots for the rest of life while Type 2 shows up primarily in adults and is associated with diet, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle.
Throughout the month, the Juvenile Diabetes Cure Alliance (JDCA) is promoting awareness for Type 1 Diabetes, which impacts 20-30 million people globally. Over the past ten years, the number of people with T1D has grown by 30%, and by 2030, is expected to impact more than 50 million people. The lifetime cost of care for a single person living with T1D amounts to $11 million. This equates to $14 billion in health care expenditures in the U.S. per year, and $280 billion globally, 5 percent of all global health expenditures. Furthermore, the cost of care for T1D is rising dramatically, the price of a 10-millimeter vial of insulin shot up from $40 in 2001, to more than $275 today, a 588 percent increase. The JDCA, continuing efforts to push major diabetes organizations to increase cure research funding for type 1 diabetes, launched its 4th Annual More for a T1D Cure Petition on September 4, 2018. For the 2017 fiscal year, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation spent only 38 percent of its income on cure research and the American Diabetes Association spent only 4 percent. Both figures are underwhelming and are cause for concern among the type 1 diabetes community. The petition, which has a goal of 200,000 signatures, has garnered 190,000 signatures to date.“There will be no cure for type 1 diabetes in our lifetime unless we see a drastic shift in the amount of money going toward cure research,” says Phil Shaw General Manager of the JDCA. “Supporting cure research is the number one priority of the type 1 diabetes community.”

European Business Aviation National Forum

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 25 settembre 2015

Brussels, Belgium On 29 September, the European Business Aviation Association (EBAA), in area archelogica romanapartnership with the Italian Business Aviation Association (IBAA) is hosting a conference at Rome’s Luiss Guido Carli University to explore how to leverage Italy’s business aviation market as an engine for economic growth. The event will bring together business aircraft operators, service providers, and financiers from across Europe, and senior Italian Government officials, including Mr Vito Cozzoli, Head of the Cabinet, Italian Ministry of Economic Development; and Mr Alessio Quaranta, Director General, Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC). Italy is one of the four largest business aviation markets in Europe – along with France, Germany and the UK. But in recent
years growth in the region has been stunted by economic uncertainty and the misperception that business is a ‘luxury’ (case in point: Italy’s introduction in 2012 of the ‘luxury tax’ on business flights). The result is a relatively tough environment for business and business aviation, and an environment that thwarts the engine of economic growth. “8% of air traffic movements per year in Italy are business aviation flights, and the Italian business aircraft fleet consists of 157 aircraft; two-thirds being light jets and turboprops fit for purpose,” said EBAA CEO, Fabio Gamba. “The market is so significant to the country, and faces such unique challenges, that we felt a forum was necessary in order to better understand the current situation and try to iron out any kinks that might be getting in the way of progress.” Internationally renowned Italian clothing manufacturers and retailers for instance, so central to the economic interests of the peninsula, rely on business aviation to compete in a tough and increasingly global sector. Departing from airports across the country – Milan, Rome, Naples, Venice, Florence, Bologna, and a vast number of small and regional airports – business aviation is a vital valve at the heart of business in and out of Italy. It is also the veins within the country, connecting Italy’s North, South, and the numerous islands. Just how business aviation is adding value to Italian industry – and not just for big business, but the plethora of Italian SMEs too – will be discussed at September’s Forum. The current state of the industry will be addressed, along with the challenges impacting the sector, and the measures that must be taken to enable a more business-friendly atmosphere that will act as a catalyst for growth in the sector, and for the country.
