Un world tourism organization

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 3 novembre 2010

A UNWTO side-event, ‘Tourism and Biodiversity: how to achieve common goals towards sustainability’, held during the meeting, advocated for the inclusion of tourism in the COP agenda and national policies as a driver of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development (27 October 2010). In particular, the event officially presented the UNWTO Recommendations to COP10 calling on the Parties to take note of the opportunities inherent in sustainable tourism for implementing the objectives of the CBD.  As a key source of income and employment, tourism makes a valuable contribution to socio-economic growth, particularly in developing countries where the largest proportion of global biodiversity is concentrated. As a result, the sector provides strong incentives for the protection of biodiversity, generates significant revenues for conservation and community development and helps raise awareness of biodiversity issues. According to the UNWTO Recommendations, a better understanding of the link between tourism, biodiversity and poverty alleviation will maximize benefits for all three areas.  The UNWTO Recommendations further outline the main conclusions emerging from the 2010 World Tourism Day celebrations, held under the theme ‘Tourism and Biodiversity’, to coincide with the UN International Year of Biodiversity. The conclusions underscore the need for the global tourism sector – as one of the world’s leading economic activities – to assume a collective responsibility for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. In particular, public and private tourism stakeholders must work within their respective ambits to implement global biodiversity targets and the involvement of local communities must be maximized to develop tourism in a sustainable manner.

The need for a two-track approach

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 26 marzo 2010

“Nevertheless I would like to underline once more the necessity of a two track approach – and thus to differentiate between fundamental policy decisions (to be addressed by Council and Commission) and (on the short term) implementation constraints (EU-USA negotiations)”.  With a new open-ended arrangement, it cannot be denied that the EU continues to outsource its financial intelligence service to the US. Therefore, the fundamental question still to be answered (by Council and Commission) is how Europe should cooperate with the US for counter-terrorism purposes and how financial messaging data providers are requested to contribute to this fight, or indeed more generally the law enforcement use of data collected for commercial purposes” she said.

My plan for real health reform

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 14 settembre 2009

Letter from Obama. I just finished laying out my plan for health reform at a joint session of Congress. Now, I’m writing directly to you because what happens next is critical — and I need your help. Change this big will not happen because I ask for it. It can only come when the nation demands it. Congress knows where I stand. Now they need to hear from you. The heart of my plan is simple: bring stability and security to Americans who already have health insurance, guarantee affordable coverage for those who don’t, and rein in the cost of health care. Tonight, I offered a specific plan for how to make it happen. I incorporated the best ideas from Democrats and Republicans to create a plan that’s bold, practical, and represents the broad consensus of the American people. We’ve come closer to real health reform in the last few months than we have in the last 60 years. But those who profit from the status quo — and those who put partisan advantage above all else — will fight us every inch of the way. We do not seek that fight, but we will not shrink from it. The stakes are too high to let scare tactics cloud the debate, or to allow partisan bickering to block the path. Your voice, right now, is essential. (P.Obama)

Global hunger among schoolchildren

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 21 luglio 2009

London-  The former Ghanaian president, John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor, has today been  named a Global Ambassador against Hunger for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).  He joins an elite team of celebrities, sportsmen and statesmen  in stepping forward to advocate on behalf of the world’s poorest and hungriest people. WFP  Executive Director Josette Sheeran said that with the number of hungry people  in  the world expected to top one billion this year, John Kufuor is bringing  WFP  critical  support  at  a  crucial  juncture.  She added that Ambassador Kufuor  will  emphasise  the need to provide good nutrition for children in school. With  renewed attention focused on the issue of global food security, JohnKufuor  will  also  help  to underline the importance of fighting hunger on several  fronts  –  by investing in long-term agricultural development, but also  by funding WFP’s work in tackling urgent hunger needs and helping the hungry poor to access affordable and nutritious food. WFP  Ambassadors  against Hunger demonstrate commitment to the global fight against  hunger.  They  reach  out  to world leaders as well as the general public, using their talent, skills and public persona to generate awareness and  support  for WFP. John Kufuor joins a powerful team of WFP ambassadors including sporting legends such as the marathon runner, Paul Tergat and the footballer,  Kakà;  former  U.S. Senator, George McGovern, and the actress, Drew Barrymore. Key facts about WFP School Meal programmes: 66 million children go to school hungry each day – This is largely due to an increase in overall global school enrollment, and the food and financial crises have increased the ranks of the food insecure/undernourished. Approximately 70% of the 66 million are concentrated in ten countries (India, China, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, United Republic of Tanzania, Philippines). WFP calculates that US$3.2 billion is needed per year to reach all 6 million hungry school age children. US$1.1 billion would allow WFP to reach the 22 million children in Africa. Every year WFP feeds more than 20 million children in school meal programmes in some 70 countries. In 2008, WFP fed a record 23 million children. Over the past 45 years, 42 countries have taken over the responsibility from WFP for school meal programmes.
