Esri President Jack Dangermond Given Royal Honor in Netherlands

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 1 maggio 2019

Esri, the global leader in location intelligence, today announced that its founder and president Jack Dangermond received the royal Dutch decoration, Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau. Jan Hamming, Mayor of Zaanstad, awarded the accolade to Dangermond on behalf of King Willem-Alexander. The decoration was bestowed upon Dangermond in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the national and international GIS community. The establishment of Esri in 1969 paved the way for the introduction of digital mapping and analyses thanks to the development of ArcGIS software. In 1985, the Dutch national planning service (RPD) in the north-eastern city of Zwolle was the first to use ArcGIS, a milestone that was to be followed by more than a thousand other organizations.“The Netherlands have been a forward-thinking country in the field of GIS, and this recognition is a sincere honor,” said Laura Dangermond, Esri co-founder. “As one of our oldest international customers, Jack is proud to support the nation’s innovative goals.”
Alongside his involvement in making Dutch organizations more successful by sharing knowledge, Dangermond is also deeply committed to global social issues such as climate change, support for less developed regions around the world, and education. While it is unusual that a royal Dutch decoration is awarded to a person living abroad, Dangermond’s worldwide work and the special bond he has always maintained with The Netherlands is a distinctive combination. An American citizen, Dangermond’s family emigrated from The Netherlands to California, and some still live in The Netherlands.

Catella sells and reinvests in the Netherlands for its sustainable property fund

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 8 febbraio 2017

catella arenaMunich-based investment manager Catella Real Estate has taken advantage of the current favourable market conditions in the Netherlands by selling an office building in Amsterdam and reinvesting in a modern residential and retail property in Utrecht’s city centre for the Sarasin Sustainable Properties – European Cities fund. The office building at Middenlaan 14-16 in Amsterdam has 5,490 square metres of office space and 1,090 square metres of storage space. Due to the dated quality of the space in the building, constructed in 1972, Catella took the decision to sell the property above market value.“The Dutch real estate market is on course for recovery. Its good performance is also reflected in the favourable market conditions, which have benefited this sale,” says Henrik Fillibeck, Managing Director of Catella Real Estate. The capital has been reinvested in a residential and retail property at Oudegracht 152-156/ Vinkenburgstraat 17 in the Binnenstad district of central Utrecht. The property has almost 3,500 square metres of usable space and stands on a 1,200 square metre piece of land. Residential space takes up 1,455 square metres, while 1,250 square metres are allocated to retail and 789 square metres to food and drink outlets. “The Dutch recovery is filtering through to the retail sector. All the indices suggest that the Dutch have regained their appetite for spending more money on consumption. Reinvestment in a residential and retail building is an excellent way to further diversify the portfolio and spread risks. By selling a dedicated office building and buying a mixed-use property, the diversification in retail and residential space can be further expanded. Oudegracht is the city’s best-known canal and a prime retail location, with a large number of restaurants, cafés and bars, and helps to make the city, byopening a new location in the area of Randstad, a metropolitan area in Europe,” says Henrik Fillibeck.Catella’s Sarasin Sustainable Properties – European Cities fund focuses on sustainable investments in fast-growing major European cities.
Catella is a leading specialist in property investments, fund management and banking, with operations in 12 European countries. The group has sales of approximately SEK 2 billion and manages assets of approximately SEK 150 billion. Catella is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm in the Mid Cap segment.

Collective complaint to the European Committee of Social Rights

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 12 luglio 2013

The Committee of the European Social Charter of the Council of Europe (Strasbourg) has declared admissible a case on the situation of undocumented migrants in the Netherlands, presented by the Conference of European Churches (CEC). Upon request of the Protestant Church in the Netherlands (PCN), the Conference of European Churches (CEC) has submitted on 17 January 2013 a “collective complaint” to the European Committee of Social Rights (called below “the Committee”) of the Council of Europe (CoE), which seat is in Strasbourg.
CEC is one of the organisations authorized to lodge a collective complaint under the Revised Social Charter.”If a country really lacks resources, the international community must step in. The Netherlands is however a rich country. Expensive medical assistance is in principle available, whilst food and shelter is denied. Rejection of the destitute has nothing to do with the public recourses of the Netherlands. The State refuses to meet international standards to which it has voluntarily decided to bind itself, complying not even with the minimum core obligations.” told Rev. Richard Fischer from the Church and Society Commission of CEC

Parliament to launch in-depth inquiry into US surveillance programmes

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 5 luglio 2013

Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee will conduct an “in-depth inquiry” into the US surveillance programmes, including the bugging of EU premises and other spying allegations, and present its results by the end of this year, says a resolution passed by the full House on Thursday. The Parliament President and political group leaders formally confirmed the launch of the inquiry. MEPs also call for more protection for whistleblowers. In the resolution, approved by 483 votes to 98 with 65 abstentions, MEPs express serious concern over PRISM and other surveillance programmes, strongly condemn spying on EU representations and call on the US authorities to provide them with full information on these allegations without further delay.Parliament also expresses grave concern about allegations that similar surveillance programmes are run by several EU member states, such as the UK, Sweden, The Netherlands, Germany and Poland. It urges them to examine whether those programmes are compatible with EU law.The Civil Liberties Committee inquiry will gather information and evidence from both US and EU sources and present its conclusions in a resolution by the end of the year. It will assess the impact of the alleged surveillance activities on EU citizens’ right to privacy and data protection, freedom of expression, the presumption of innocence and the right to an effective remedy.MEPs involved in the inquiry will table recommendations to prevent similar cases in future and step up IT security in the EU institutions, bodies and agencies.MEPs stress the need for “procedures allowing whistleblowers to unveil serious violations of fundamental rights” and the importance of providing such people with the protection they need, including at international level.MEPs call on the European Commission, the Council of Ministers and EU countries to consider possible recourse to all levers at their disposal in negotiations with the US, including suspending the current air passenger and bank data deals (Passenger Name Record and Terrorist Finance Tracking Programme, respectively).EU data protection standards should not be undermined as a result of the EU-US trade deal, warns the resolution, adding that it would be “unfortunate” if EU-US trade talks were to be affected by such allegations.Parliament calls on EU countries to speed up their work on the whole data protection package and urges the Commission and the US authorities to resume negotiations on the data protection agreement without delay. The final deal must ensure that EU citizens’ access to the US judicial system is equal to that enjoyed by US citizens, it adds.

Hybrid Heat Pumps Create New Opportunities in the Retrofit Sector

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 18 gennaio 2013

Edinburgh, Scotland Heat pumps sales in Europe have flat-lined for the last few years. Hybrids – a combined electric air-source heat pump plus a gas boiler, will open up new opportunities, enabling electric heat pumps to compete with conventional gas boilers – a potentially huge market with 8 million installations per year across Europe. Hybrids also offer opportunities to decarbonise the off-gas grid sector (i.e. when combined with oil boilers).New in depth research on hybrid heat pumps by Delta-ee, which analyses the current market and outlook for hybrids, indicates that the best potential for hybrids with gas boilers lies in markets such as the UK, The Netherlands and Germany. Four of the five biggest boiler companies in Europe are already offering a hybrid, and there are already nearly 20 different hybrid products on the market. Sales could increase tenfold to 2020, from close to 10,000 per year across Europe today. Five reasons why hybrids will open up the residential on-gas retrofit market:
Customer economics: The upfront cost of a hybrid is significantly lower than for an electric heat pump alone. Further, where the heat pump works predominantly for space heating, and the boiler provides hot water, running cost savings can be achieved through hybrids compared to a boiler alone.
Consumer acceptance: Hybrids using a gas boiler could be far easier to sell to both customers and traditional heating installers than a pure heat pump – gas is familiar and trusted, particularly in gas-dominated markets like the Netherlands, UK and parts of Germany (as shown in Delta-ee’s report for ENA). Could re-naming the system from “hybrid heat pump” to “hybrid boiler” further increase appeal?
Retrofitability: A wide range of hybrid system designs fit with a wide range of building types. Emerging compact integrated products which may be able to directly replace combi boilers could open up mass market opportunities. Un-integrated products where the heat pump can be retrofitted to an existing boiler, open up new market opportunities to ‘up-sell’ existing heating systems.
Lower carbon than a boiler: Hybrids can play a role in decarbonising heat – by offering a lower carbon alternative to a gas or oil boiler, and potentially even saving carbon relative to a pure HP.
Reducing grid impact: ‘Smart’ operation of hybrids (the ability to switch away from electricity at peak times) increases electricity system flexibility & helps manage grid congestion. Therefore, hybrids reduce grid impact relative to full electrification. The value of hybrids to the electricity grid as we move towards a low carbon future could be immense.

New Teijin Plant in the Netherlands Makes World’s Strongest Tape

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 13 ottobre 2011

Carbon fiber

Image via Wikipedia

Arnhem. on the Emmtec grounds in Emmen, the Netherlands, Teijin Aramid opened its newest plant for the production of the world’s strongest tape, Endumax. By adding the new high-performance polyethylene tape (HP-PE) to its product portfolio, the Teijin Group has taken the next step toward global market leadership in super fibers & materials. For years, the Netherlands has played a dominant role in the global production of super fibers, including Teijin’s aramid fiber Twaron. Thanks to the unique properties of Endumax and the start of the production in Emmen, a new material can be added to the list. The aim is to obtain a global market share with Endumax of at least 15% by 2015. Production capacity will be 1,000 tons a year before the end of 2012. Teijin has again invested dozens of millions of euros for the production of Endumax. A boost for the economy in the northern part of the country and provides dozens of extra jobs in the area.
Endumax-tape is made from a special type of polyethylene (UHMWPE) and is 11x stronger than steel at the same weight, while its stiffness is comparable to carbon fiber. The tape is extremely strong, chemical resistant, not brittle, light in weight and can easily and effectively be used in thin and flat structures. It will play a significant role in making various materials stronger and lighter. For example, it will be used for bulletproof plates, tubes, high performance synthetic plates as well as narrow tapes for cut-resistant gloves, ropes and nets, among other things.

Nato: Piracy mission handover

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 7 agosto 2010

Whilst NATO warships continue to patrol in the Gulf of Aden in the counter piracy mission, Operation Ocean Shield, the two flagships from Standing NATO Maritime Groups 1 (SNMG1) and 2 (SNMG2) met in Djibouti for an operational handover. Since the 30th of June Commodore Michiel Hijmans (Royal Netherlands Navy) has been in charge of the NATO counter piracy Task Force and today he passed this command to Commodore Christian Rune (Royal Danish Navy).   On completion of the handover, Commodore Hijmans said: “Trying to locate and identify a small pirate skiff amongst large numbers of small craft conducting their legitimate business in one of the world busiest shipping lanes is a real challenge. It is a careful balancing act of concentrating our resources where they are most needed whilst providing protection and reassurance elsewhere and I am very confident that SNMG1, under the command of Commodore Rune, is up to the task. By rotating the groups, NATO demonstrates its commitment towards counter piracy operations.”   Upon assuming command of Operation Ocean Shield, Commodore Rune said: “My staff and I will do our outmost to keep up the good work done by Commodore Hijmans and SNMG2. It is an honourable task to contribute to the creation of a safer environment for all in this area. My staff and I are eager to start the work and establish good relationships with our counterparts in the region.
NATO has contributed to the international counter piracy effort off the Horn of Africa since December 2008.   NATO has recently announced its continuing commitment to counter-piracy by extending Operation Ocean Shield to December 2012.  NATO Task Forces currently in Operation Ocean Shield:  HDMS ESBERN SNARE (Flagship) – Denmark HNLMS DE ZEVEN PROVINCIËN – The Netherlands USS KAUFFMAN – United States of America

Command of Standing Nato Maritime Group 2

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 2 luglio 2010

The Netherlands assumed command of Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2). Commodore Michiel B. Hijmans (RNLN) took over from Commodore Steve J. Chick (RN) during a ceremony in Safaga, Egypt overseen by the Chief of Staff of the NATO Maritime Component Command in Naples, Rear Admiral Bruce N. Williams (RN).   The ceremony took place on board of HNLMS De Zeven Provinciën which became the new flagship of the Group. The former flagship, HMS Chatham, was also present in Safaga. Currently SNMG2 is conducting NATO’s counter piracy mission, Operation Ocean Shield, in the waters of the Gulf of Aden and the Somali Basin.   Rear Admiral Williams said: “Whilst all here, have their eyes first and foremost fixed on the task closest at hand, Operation Ocean Shield, it is critical we recognise the scope and complexity of the SNMG2’s mission as a whole. From sustaining the task group as Immediate Reaction Forces, as part of NATO’s High Readiness maritime capabilities, to the enduring and resolute anti-terrorism modus operandi of Operation Active Endeavour in the Mediterranean to the much higher and immediate tempo of Operation Ocean Shield off the Horn of Africa, to the sustained efforts to develop stronger worldwide partnerships for NATO.”  After Commodore Hijmans assumed command, he said: “I am extremely proud to take over from my predecessor Commodore Steve Chick, who over the past year has done a splendid job as Commander SNMG2. I am confident that we can maintain the same level of effectiveness that you and your staff have displayed, and I am sure that Task Force 508, consisting of the flagship HNLMS De Zeven Provinciën, USS Cole and TCG Gelibolu, will continue to successfully deter piracy activities off the Horn of Africa and provide safe passage for merchant shipping in the Gulf of Aden.”
NATO has contributed to the international counter piracy effort off the Horn of Africa since December 2008.  The mission has expanded from escorting UN and World Food Programme Shipping under Operation Allied Provider to protecting merchant traffic in the Gulf of Aden under Operation Allied Protector.  In addition to these activities and as part of the latest mission, Operation Ocean Shield, NATO is offering  countries in the region, upon their request, to help develop their own capacity to combat piracy.  This complements the existing international efforts as coordinated with the Contact Group on Piracy off the coast of Somalia (CGPCS).
