World Bank Group to Invest $700 Million by 2015 to Improve Women and Children’s Health in Poor Countries

NEW YORK CITY. The United Nations, World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim will announce that the Bank Group projects at least $700 million in financing through the end of 2015 to help developing countries reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for women and children’s health. This new funding comes from the International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank Group’s fund for the poorest countries, and will enable national scale-ups of successful pilot reproductive, maternal, and child health projects that were made possible by support from the Bank Group’s Health Results Innovation Trust Fund (HRITF) and IDA. This announcement follows President Kim’s September 2012 commitment to help scale up funding for MDGs 4 and 5 as part of the UN Secretary General’s Every Woman Every Child global partnership.Today’s $700 million announcement comes on top of a September 2010 World Bank pledge to provide $600 million in IDA results-based financing for MDGs 4 and 5 by 2015; the World Bank has delivered on that pledge two years ahead of schedule. This support has contributed to global declines in maternal and child mortality and expanded access to health care for poor women and children.Through results-based financing, the World Bank Group is working with countries to shift the focus from paying for inputs to paying for results. Payment to health service providers is explicitly tied to the successful delivery and independent verification of pre-agreed results.
In Afghanistan, the number of women delivering their babies with the support of skilled birth attendants more than doubled from April 2010 to December 2012 in treatment facilities.
In Argentina, improved health services and accessibility for poor pregnant women and children led to a decrease in low birth weight and in-hospital deaths of babies in the first 28 days of life for program beneficiaries.
In Burundi, over just one year, births at health facilities rose by 25 percent, prenatal consultations went up by 20 percent, and the number of children fully vaccinated increased by 10 percent.
Further progress on women and children’s health will require a comprehensive approach to strengthening health systems, including investments beyond the health sector in critical areas such as water and sanitation, education systems, and labor markets. IDA’s country-based approach reinforces national health strategies and priorities while building on the World Bank Group’s areas of comparative advantage in providing a multi-sectoral and systems-based approach to improving health. The HRITF, supported by the Governments of Norway and the United Kingdom, in turn reinforces this by providing countries with incentives to scale up their investments through IDA.During the past decade from 2003 to 2013, financing support through IDA has led to:
Nearly 600 million children immunized
More than 194 million pregnant women provided with antenatal care
More than 29 million births attended by skilled health personnel
More than 210 million pregnant/lactating women, adolescent girls, and/or children under age five reached by basic nutrition services
The World Bank Group and Health, Nutrition and Population
The World Bank Group is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world, with the goals of ending extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity. Improving health is integral to achieving these goals. The World Bank Group provides financing, state-of-the-art analysis, and policy advice to help countries expand access to quality, affordable health care; protect people from falling into poverty or worsening poverty due to illness; and promote investments in all sectors that form the foundation of healthy societies.

The city that never sleeps was about to wake up when Orlando Duque from Colombia leapt into New York Harbor in Manhattan, New York City, Monday morning. With the world’s most famous icon of freedom in the back, the 38-year-old professional cliff diver dove 23m backwards from a helicopter. The Statue of Liberty has always been a welcoming signal to people arriving from abroad and with today’s high dive welcomes the best cliff divers in the world in the United States. After four stops in Europe, the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series leaps over the Atlantic into the second half of the season and touches down in one of America’s oldest cities – Boston, Massachusetts, on August 25.
“It’s really exciting to get such a warm welcome back to the US,” said Orlando Duque after his dive into the Hudson. “It doesn’t get any better than diving in front of something as iconic as the Statue of Liberty. It’s beyond what I ever could have imagined.”From this once-in-a-lifetime experience, the ten-time world champion travels north to Boston for the fifth stop of the 2013 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series this coming weekend. Going into the second half of the season, the fight for the prestigious title is still wide open. Current tournament leader Gary Hunt, from England, Russia’s Artem Silchenko, who already has two victories to his name in 2013, and the latest winner, 24-year-old US-diver David Colturi, will take on the next challenge, along with the Colombian, who sits in third after the first half of the Series. The international high diving elite will for the third time climb to the top of the 90-foot-high Institute of Contemporary Art building on Fan Pier and try to propel their performances towards perfection in the latest ‘exhibit’ at a place of inspiration and imagination. Count on the divers – among them five Americans – to deliver unforgettable impressions on Sunday, August 25, from 2pm local time.
85kph, aesthetic gravity-defying freefall – cliff diving is the purest extreme sport on earth. Ten of the world’s best cliff divers launch from 27 metres with no protection at all, except their concentration, skill and physical control. They add flips and twists to their freefall and hit the water three seconds later. As the pinnacle of cliff diving competitions, the 2013 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series is once again the platform for breathtaking action and beyond-belief complexity, spotlighting the sport’s top athletes as well as young talent. In its fifth season, the World Series title is decided during eight competitions across Europe, Asia, North and South America between May and October.
ARENA is the technical partner of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2013.

Danon’s argument over Israel

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 14 agosto 2012

Danny Danon, deputy speaker of the Knesset, is a rapidly rising political star in Israel and abroad; he has just released a book and is available for interview from Israel, or he will be in New York City from September 11th – 13th (directly following the DNC and ahead of the UN Generally Assembly). As a leader of Netanyahu’s ruling Likud Party, Danon is a fearless supporter of a new brand of Israeli nationalism that often puts him at the center of fierce political debate. His efforts to prioritize Israel’s own viability with or without the support of its allies are sparking heated debates. Danon is available to go on air to discuss a range of issues, including the upcoming American presidential elections and why Israel should be prepared to stand on its own.In his book, ISRAEL: The Will to Prevail (Palgrave Macmillan; 2012), he delivers his hard-hitting assessment of the nation’s present moment, and the bold stance that he argues his fellow leaders must take in order to assure a permanent and secure Israel. Danon makes an unflinching case for an autonomous Israel that acts on its own terms, despite world or U.S. opinion. His book calls for a new way of dealing with the Palestinian conflict that eschews the familiar two-state proposal and allows Israelis to take their fate into their own hands. Danon discusses his views on:
• How the Obama administration ushered in a thawing of U.S./Israel relations, and why this puts both countries in peril
• Why Israel and the U.S. must continue to ally themselves, with the acceptance that the political needs of both don’t always align
• Why talk about the creation of a Palestinian state should cease
• Danon’s argument that Israel should annex the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, with the goal of extending Israeli jurisdiction to the Jewish communities and uninhabited lands of the West Bank
• A three-state solution entailing an agreement between Jordan, Egypt and Israel, giving Palestinians land and rights across these three areas.
• Why Israel’s PR war with the Palestinians is so crucial, and how the nation’s message and reputation can be protected against inaccurate news reports

3,000 Volunteers Needed for HOPE

On Monday, January 30, 2012, approximately 3,000 volunteers will fan out across the five boroughs for the eighth annual Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE). Conducting the survey throughout the early morning hours, participants will become the eyes and ears of the City– canvassing streets, parks and other public spaces to identify individuals living unsheltered. “Through HOPE, we can effectively project service needs and allocate resources for individuals who are experiencing street homelessness,” said Department of Homeless Services (DHS) Commissioner Seth Diamond. “In addition, the survey always proves to be a valuable opportunity for New Yorkers to get involved, while learning about the issue of homelessness and the work that DHS does 365 days a year.” Required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), street surveys similar to HOPE are conducted in municipalities across the country and are a requisite for receiving funding under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. With 1,500 survey areas covered, and the independent addition of decoys as a quality control measure, New York City’s HOPE count embodies the Bloomberg Administration’s innovative yet data-backed approach to government.
The 2011 HOPE survey estimated a total of 2,648 individuals living unsheltered throughout the City– equating to a 40 percent decrease since the first Citywide survey in 2005. The 2012 count will further indicate where resources are needed in a transparent and research-driven way, with the agency’s top priority to best serve homeless clients.
Working with non-profit providers, DHS employs a comprehensive, year-round outreach program, through which teams engage the street homeless population 24 hours per day, seven days a week, Citywide, bringing services directly to those in need. Through the creation of alternatives to traditional shelter, such as Safe Havens and stabilization beds, many individuals who had previously resided on the streets for years have recently accepted housing options and moved indoors. “With dangerous winter weather quickly approaching, we ask every New Yorker to dial 311 if they see a street homeless individual who may be in need of assistance,” said Commissioner Diamond. “The participation of ordinary New Yorkers is vital to our street outreach program, and continues to make a difference in the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness.” (commissioner)

Brooklyn CB6 Annual Holiday Party

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 11 dicembre 2011

Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges

Here’s a chance to come together as a community, to share some food and frivolity in a casual, social environment. That’s right – no minutes to take, Robert’s Rules of Order are suspended, and the only thing on the agenda is having fun! This year’s event will be held on Monday, December 19th from 6-9pm, at Red Rose Restaurant, 315 Smith Street (between Union/President Streets), in Carroll Gardens. It’s only $30 per person for savory, delicious snacks and soda. There’s also a cash bar. We keep the price down to make this an affordable night out for everyone. And if we do clear anything above our cost, that money is used to help support our 501(c)3 organization, Friends of Brooklyn Community Board 6, Inc. It’s our Friends group that pays for this monthly newsletter, and supplements our community board’s meager operating budget. In order to keep us going another year, we would be grateful if you would consider making a year-end contribution on top of the party cost. Feel free to round-up to $50, or $100, or whatever fits your budget, and bring your check made out to “Friends of Brooklyn CB6, Inc.” to the party with you, or mail it to us at 250 Baltic Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201. As a non-profit organization, your year-end contribution is tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. We hope to see you at the party, because it wouldn’t be a party without YOU. Feel free to bring family, friends and neighbors too.
