Record Number of Nominations recieved for US$1Million Al Sumait Prize for African Development

Kuwait City.The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) has announced that it has received 108 nominations from over 36 countries for the US$1Million Health category of the 2018 Al-Sumait Prize for African Development, which closed for entries at the end of June.
The annual Al-Sumait prize, which is worth one million dollars, is awarded for significant advances in development in the categories of health, food security and education for Africa.“This is the largest number of nominations we have received since the inaugural award in 2015. With nominations for 60 World Health Organization affiliated organizations and almost 50 individuals, from around the world, all dedicated to improving health across Africa this is a very encouraging development which provides a great opportunity to promote pioneering health development scientific, medical and social ideas to life in Africa.” said Dr Mustafa Marafi head of the KFAS Prizes Office.
The Al-Sumait Board of Trustees at their planned meeting in November will confirm the winner proposed by the selection committee for the prize. The Board comprises prominent international personalities in the field of development in Africa and world-renowned philanthropists. The Board is chaired by H.E. Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait.Other trustees include Mr Bill Gates, Co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr Makhtar Diop World Bank’s Vice President for Africa, Mr Kwaku Aning, Deputy Director General and Head of Department at the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mr. Tareq Al-Mutawa Director General and Chairman of the Board of Sadeer and Mr Abdulatif Al-Hamad, Director General and Chairman of the Board of the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development.Past winners of the prize include Professor Kevin Marsh of the University of Oxford and African Academy of Sciences, Kenya, for his sustained efforts to control and eradicate malaria, the Sweet potato for Nutrition Team at the International Potato Centre (CIP) and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) for their work on food security and the Forum of African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Kenya for their work on equity and equality of Education across Africa.Announced by the Amir of the State of Kuwait, H.H. Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah in November 2013 at the 3rd Arab African Summit, the aim of Al-Sumait Health Prize is to contribute significantly to solve major health development challenges facing African nations. Nominations for the prize need to be received by Al-Sumait’s Prize office no later than June 30, 2018.“Al-Sumait’s 2018 Prize in the Health Category is open to individuals and organizations delivering pioneering contributions to solving Health challenges in Africa,” said Dr. Adnan Shihab-Eldin, Director General of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), which administers the prestigious prize.Dr. Adnan Shihab-Eldin said the aim of the 2018 prize is to recognize individuals or institutions who through their research projects or initiatives have made significant advancement within the field of Health that have produced seminal impact and tangible results in health-care systems on the continent, especially for the underprivileged.Key conditions for the prize include being able to demonstrate research work or projects that are innovative and have achieved high-impact in line with the international standards established for the prize.

Nomination de M. Sébastien Maillard à la direction de l’Institut Jacques Delors

Sébastien MaillardLe Conseil d’administration de l’Institut Jacques Delors, le think tank européen fondé en 1996 par l’ancien Président de la Commission européenne et présidé par Enrico Letta, doyen de l’École des affaires internationales de Sciences Po et ancien Premier Ministre italien, a nommé M. Sébastien Maillard au poste de Directeur.
M. Maillard, 44 ans, qui prendra ses fonctions à partir du 4 septembre prochain, rejoint l’Institut après une carrière de journaliste à La Croix. Auparavant correspondant du quotidien à Bruxelles puis à Rome, il a effectué de nombreux reportages à travers le continent avant de suivre la campagne présidentielle de 2017 en France. Spécialiste des affaires européennes, qu’il a enseignées à Sciences Po (Paris) et au Boston College, il est l’auteur de Qu’avons-nous fait de l’Europe ? (Éd. Salvator, 2013 – préface de Jacques Delors) et prépare un nouveau livre sur l’Europe avec Enrico Letta, à paraître en septembre.«La nomination de Sébastien Maillard, que j’ai fortement soutenue, arrive dans une période de grande effervescence pour les politiques européennes qui connaissent enfin un momentum positif après des années de crises – a déclaré Enrico Letta. The new closing date for entries for the one million dollar Al-Sumait Prize for Food Security is June 30th, 2016, with nomination forms available for download at http://alsumaitprize.org/nominations. Established in honor of the work of Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sumait, a Kuwaiti physician who spent his lifetime helping the poor in Africa, the Al-Sumait Prize for Food Security is awarded for a research project or initiative the Al-Sumait Board Of Trustees deem to have made significant advancement within one or more of the following areas:Developing new varieties of seeds, crops or livestock which can improve the food security of the poor population in Africa by increasing the calorific and nutritional value of food produced and consumed domestically
Improving farmers’ access to agricultural inputs, techniques, technologies and markets so as to increase the availability of staple products that form a core part of the diet of the poorest people in Africa
Improving farmers’ resilience to climate change and extreme weather conditions.

The IWMF seeks Nominations for its 25th Courage in Journalism Awards

washingtonWashington DC – The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) is seeking nominations for its 25th Courage in Journalism and Lifetime Achievement Awards in 2014. Awardees will be honored at ceremonies in New York on October 22nd and Los Angeles on October 29th.The Courage in Journalism Awards honor women journalists who set themselves apart by their extraordinary bravery. Facing and surviving danger to uncover the truth, they raise the bar for reporting under duress.We also recognize the pioneers who kicked down barriers to make it possible for women all over the world to find their voices and make them heard. Lifetime Achievement Award winners persevered, opening doors for future generations to make a difference.The IWMF has established an emergency fund for women journalists to support the urgent needs of our awardees and others with everything from medical assistance to emergency relocation for journalists or her loved ones. La nomination di Gingrich

Nel 1995 Newt Gingrich, presidente della Camera dei rappresentanti, chiuse le porte del governo per una settimana perché non voleva approvare una legge che aumentasse le spese del governo. Adesso, Gingrich suggerisce qualcosa di più drastico per risolvere i bilanci degli Stati che si trovano in condizioni precarie. In un recente articolo scritto insieme a Jeb Bush, ex governatore della Florida e fratello dell’ex presidente George, pubblicato sul Los Angeles Times, Gingrich sostiene che la bancarotta sia la soluzione. Dichiarando bancarotta gli Stati si potrebbero proteggere dai creditori e non pagare i costi  per tutti i servizi che devono offrire e ovviamente abrogare i contratti con gli impiegati statali incluso le loro pensioni. La bancarotta consiste dell’ultima carta per i repubblicani per sfamare la bestia, ossia il governo, togliendogli tutti i fondi e ricominciando daccapo offrendo servizi limitati e colpire naturalmente i sindacati visti come responsabili della crisi economica. Andare in bancarotta non è facile per gli individui anche se offre un minimo di protezione temporanea ma con notevoli conseguenze negative. Per un’azienda la bancarotta a volte è possibile ma anche qui si tratta di serie situazioni.
La bancarotta per una città è legale negli Stati Uniti e anche se non tipica può avvenire. È successo nella Contea di Orange, California del Sud, non lontano del noto parco di divertimenti di Disneyland. Ci sono voluti diciotto mesi  per la ripresa della città ma il grande vantaggio secondo la destra è che non si sono aumentate le tasse. La legge federale non permette agli Stati di dichiarare bancarotta quindi non ci sono possibilità che ciò avvenga. Si tratta solo di un’idea radicale che spinge il concetto antigoverno ad un punto estremo. Sorprende che i proponenti di quest’idea siano Bush e Gingrich. Per il primo si tratta di un repubblicano di reputazione moderata il quale sarebbe dovuto diventare presidente invece del fratello. Ovviamente Jeb non ha perso le speranze e ci sono possibilità che fra non molto riemerga a galla come candidato per la Casa Bianca non per il 2012 ma più in là. Gingrich, da parte sua, ha già suggerito che sta facendo un pensierino per il 2012. In un suo intervento ha dichiarato che i leader alla nomination repubblicana al momento sono Mitt Romney, ex governatore del Massachusetts, Sarah Palin, ex governatore dell’Alaska, e Mike Huckabee, ex governatore dell’Arkansas. Tutti e tre hanno partecipato all’elezione del 2008. Romney e Huckabee come candidati presidenziali eventualmente sconfitti da John McCain per la nomination repubblicana. La Palin come eventuale vice di McCain.
In un’intervista al Columbus Dispatch di Detroit Michigan, Gingrich ha detto che Romney è il primo per quanto riguarda la raccolta dei fondi, la Palin al primo posto per la celebrità, e Huckabee è il primo nei sondaggi. Non delle belle raccomandazioni per i suoi possibili rivali. Ma poi Gingrich non ha una reputazione di chierichetto. Quando era speaker della Camera negli anni novanta si dimostrò leader della crociata contro Bill Clinton facendo tutto il suo possibile per mandare giù il presidente per il noto affaire con la stagista Monica Lewinsky. Allo stesso tempo Gingrich era coinvolto in  un rapporto adultero con una sua assistente che poi divenne la sua terza moglie. Ma questa non era la prima né l’unica volta che Gingrich si era dimostrato colpevole di infedeltà e di ipocrisia. Durante la sua prima corsa per la Camera dei Rappresentanti nel 1978 usò lo slogan “lasciate che la nostra famiglia rappresenti la vostra alla Camera”. Anche a quei tempi aveva un’amante. Secondo un resoconto chiese il divorzio alla sua  prima moglie quando lei si trovava all’ospedale mentre si stava recuperando da un’operazione. Gingrich è noto come un intellettuale ma gli sarà difficile fare dimenticare  agli americani i suoi problemi con la verità. Se lui tradisce le persone a lui care farà la stessa cosa con il Paese?  In un certo senso lo ha già fatto. Nel 1997 la Camera che lui presiedeva lo rimproverò con un voto di 395 a 28 di problemi etici e lo costrinse a pagare una multa di trecentomila dollari. Poco tempo dopo diede le dimissioni.
Si candiderà Gingrich alla nomination repubblicana? È possibile. Gli americani hanno memoria corta come dimostrano gli aumenti dei consensi favorevoli di George Bush nonostante la sua disastrosa politica. La riabilitazione di Bush darebbe al fratello Jeb sempre più speranze (Domenico Maceri)

Gospel leggendario a Chiasso

Chiasso Cinema Teatro sabato 18 dicembre un eccezionale concerto gospel, affidato a degli autentici pionieri di questo genere musicale, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, storico gruppo di Los Angeles che festeggia quest’anno mezzo secolo di vita. Nati come gruppo gospel nel senso tradizionale del termine, The Mighty Clouds of Joy negli anni hanno mescolato suoni soul, R&B e rock nei loro repertori, sempre mantenendo l’essenza religiosa primitiva. In 50 anni di attività si sono aggiudicati tre Grammy Award, numerose nomination, ed hanno pubblicato ben 36 dischi di successo.  Entrati di diritto nella Gospel Music Hall of Fame, hanno collaborato con grandi nomi della musica, dai Rolling Stones ad Aretha Franklin, da Ray Charles a Paul Simon. Il gruppo ha visto al suo interno artisti del calibro di Johnny Martin, Ermant Franklin Jr., Elmo Franklin, Leon Polk e David Walker. Premio Siae x Demo
