The View From my office window

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 31 marzo 2020

Last week I described my impressions looking out from my office window on 45th Street. I told you how the city was shutting down, the traffic was thinning out, and the crazies weren’t screaming. It’s different this week. The city has shut down, the traffic is barely audible or visible and the only crazy people are the citizens of New York City, troubled by how quickly we went from the “city that never sleeps” to the city that craves nothing more than a restful night’s sleep. Over the weekend, my wife and I gathered up my inventory from 45th Street and made a couple of car trips back home to load it into my son’s bedroom. Jake, our son, is currently working and living in Bethesda, MD, so space is available, kind of, for a dozen or so boxes. My computer and printer are set up on his desk and it feels as if the world has shrunk to the size of our apartment. We go out every morning to stroll the quiet(er) streets and breathe the fresh(er) air.I’ve been caught up in a number of business related matters, which I will explain to you another time. For this week, I am sending you some photographs I took, which illustrate, in a very small way, what life has been like. This first picture is my current view from our son’s bedroom. He’s always enjoyed the best view in the apartment looking out onto the FDR drive, the East River and Long Island City with its famous Pepsi Cola sign.Returning home we were treated to the glorious, unfettered Magnolia trees, which, despite the prevailing sadness and stress, managed to put on a stunning welcome to spring. MHPS Opens Branch Office in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 8 marzo 2019

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd. (MHPS) today opened a branch office in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. Establishment of the new base will enhance service capabilities for the country’s thermal power generation systems and attract expanded orders as Bangladesh undergoes robust economic growth. The branch office will progressively strengthen its sales capabilities for the coming projects, especially those centered on thermal power facilities, planned by both the Bangladeshi government and the private sector. It will also steadily fortify its capacity to disseminate pertinent information to local customers. The new branch office, located in central Dhaka, was opened to function as a sales unit of Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (MHPS-AP), a wholly owned MHPS subsidiary based in Singapore. To celebrate its opening, a ceremony was held on March 4th, and attended by numerous distinguished guests. These included: Bangladesh government officials headed by Nasrul Hamid, the Honorable State Minister of the Ministry of Power, Energy & Mineral Resources; and local Japanese representation by Ambassador Hiroyasu Izumi. Representatives in attendance on behalf of MHPS were led by MHPS-AP Chairman, Ken Kawai.
Today, Bangladesh is achieving a solid average annual economic growth of 6%, and with a population of approximately 160 million, and a young and abundant labor force, the nation is striving to join the ranks of middle-income countries by realizing sustainable economic growth through industrial development. With this aim, Bangladesh is pressed to improve its social infrastructure: transportation systems, power and other energy structures, etc. In response, the Bangladeshi government has issued plans to increase the nation’s power generation capacity from the current 17,000 megawatts (MW) to roughly 24,000 MW by 2021, and to 40,000 MW by 2030. To fuel such expansion, the country has begun importing LNG (liquefied natural gas) , and both the government and private sector are undertaking increased numbers of large-scale thermal power plant construction projects.MHPS has steadily contributed to Bangladesh’s development since delivering its first steam turbine in 1960. In 1987, the company provided the country’s first gas turbine, for the Old Haripur gas turbine power plant. Since then, MHPS has accumulated the supply records for a total of nine gas turbines, five being the M701F, giving the company the highest market share in Bangladesh of that output range. MHPS also provides after-sales services, primarily based on Long Term Service Agreements (LTSA), thereby contributing to Bangladesh’s economic development.Through the newly established branch office in Dhaka, MHPS will be able to provide highly efficient, environmentally friendly thermal power generation systems that respond fully to Bangladesh’s robust power demand, as its way of contributing to the indispensable stable supply of power to drive the country’s future economic growth and industrial development.

78 Percent of UK Office Workers Believe Their Jobs Will Survive Automation

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 21 dicembre 2018

Seventy eight percent of UK office workers are confident their jobs will survive automation, according to new independent research* undertaken for leading enterprise Robotic Process Automation (RPA) software company UiPath. The research, exploring the attitudes of 1,000 office employees toward automation, revealed that nearly half (49 percent) do not see how their administrative duties can be undertaken by a software robot.“RPA is one of the most far-reaching revolutions in the UK workplace,” said Kulpreet Singh, managing director EMEA, UiPath. “Office employees may be in for a pleasant surprise as the burden of boring and routine tasks moves to being performed by software robots instead. They will need to adjust to having a greater amount of time for more valuable work.”
Despite being confident about automation, only a third of male office workers (33 percent) and 22 percent of female office workers believe the technology will increase their productivity, even though more than six-in-ten across both sexes (61 percent) spend an excess of 30 percent of their time on repetitive, routine tasks that are set to be automated. “The fourth industrial revolution will create relentless waves of change as we embrace machine learning and robotics,” said Jacqueline de Rojas, CBE, president of TechUK. “This is not going away and the only thing we can change is our response. Our job will be to figure out how we respond to these changes and to pivot our skills in an ‘evergreen’ way throughout our careers. What I love about the UiPath approach is their commitment to the democratisation of learning which will undoubtedly make the difference to our ability to lifelong learning, inclusion and our connected future.”The research found that 37 percent of respondents will devote more time to new strategic projects once they are freed from repetitive work by RPA, while 36 percent will seek to develop new skills.Almost a quarter (24 percent) will spend more time on collaborating with colleagues, and more than a fifth (22 percent) on interactions with customers.“It’s encouraging to see that when office staff understand how RPA can free them from drudgery, they already see more profitable uses for their time,” added Singh. “It is imperative that organisations prepare their employees for the automation revolution.”The research found that women and younger workers bear the brunt of administrative and repetitive tasks. Sixty four percent of female workers spend more than 30 percent of their time on administrative tasks, while half of those aged 18-24 devote more than half their time on repetitive aspects of their jobs.Less than a quarter of UK employees (24 percent) believe automation will have a bad effect on the UK economy.

Why presidents take an oath of office

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 20 gennaio 2017

george-washingtonAT NOON on January 20th, Donald Trump will take the presidential oath of office, administered by John Roberts, the chief justice. With his right hand raised and his left hand atop two bibles, Mr Trump will say “I do solemnly swear”, (though he also has the option to “affirm”, using a book of his choice), “that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the constitution of the United States.” If all goes according to plan, Mr Trump will then become America’s 45th president. He will deliver an inaugural address, bid farewell as Barack Obama and his family take their leave, have lunch in the Capitol building and parade down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House. The words quoted above come from Article II, Section 1, Clause 8 of the constitution, which requires that an incoming president takes this oath “before he enter on the execution of his office”. Presidents from George Washington to Barack Obama have been sworn in under the same formula with each change of administration and every re-election. (Most presidents have tacked on “so help me God” at the end of the oath, though the constitutional provision does not contain this divine appeal.) Other federal officials are required to take an oath as well, though Congress, not the constitution, specifies the words. Oaths of office are not an American invention. Members of parliament in Britain pledge to “be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors, according to law”. In Germany, a federal minister promises to “dedicate my efforts to the well-being of the German people…and do justice to all”. In Egypt, the president swears “to the great god Allah” to “protect the republican system…and work for the good of the people.”The deliberations of America’s founders suggest that the centrepiece of the presidential oath is the pledge to “preserve, protect and defend the constitution”. These words were absent from early drafts (a version from July 1787 included only the “faithfully execute” line, with no reference to the constitution) but became a prominent theme in the eyes of the-economistpresidents who took the oath. America’s third president, Thomas Jefferson, lowered expectations in his first inaugural address by declaring the presidency a “task…above my talents”; the “constitutional vigour” of the government, he declared, is “the sheet anchor of our peace at home and safety abroad”. In 1837, Martin Van Buren said “the principle that will govern me in the high duty to which my country calls me is a strict adherence to the letter and spirit of the constitution”. Nearly a century later, Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared America’s “constitutional system…the most superbly enduring political mechanism the modern world has produced”.There are signs that Mr Trump’s constitutional commitment may not match those of his predecessors in the White House. During the campaign and the post-election transition, Mr Trump made several statements that seem difficult to square with America’s founding document. In an apparent rejection of settled First-Amendment law—and of a ruling by the late Antonin Scalia, a justice he hails—Mr Trump said that people who burn the American flag should be jailed or lose their citizenship. He also called for looser libel laws to permit newspapers to be sued more easily and advocated the use of torture, long held to violate the Eighth Amendment. Some scholars say that the oath gives presidents a tool to protect the prerogatives of their office from the encroachment of Congress. But others argue the presidential oath was designed to serve as a check on chief executives’ power. David Strauss, a law professor at the University of Chicago, observes that oaths are inherently “limiting, not empowering”. (by The Economist) (photo: George Washington, cover The Economist)

ACS Capitol Hill Briefing — Measuring Economic Growth: R&D Investments

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 24 gennaio 2014

washingtonWASHINGTON The American Chemical Society (ACS) Science & the Congress Project invites news media to attend a luncheon briefing on “Measuring Economic Growth: R&D Investments.” It will be held Thursday, Jan. 30, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Senate Russell Office Building 385. Please RSVP to http://bit.ly/1gBOIca.The briefing is sponsored by the ACS Science & the Congress Project.
To assess the size and health of the U.S. economy, economists and policymakers frequently do so by evaluating our gross domestic product (GDP). As a result of an important accounting change instituted by the Commerce Department on July 31, 2013, the economic impact of public and private scientific and engineering research and innovation (R&D) on GDP can now be better characterized. By treating R&D and creative works as investments with future payoffs, policymakers, industry leaders and government officials will be able to make better decisions on job creation, research and education priorities, and discretionary budgets. This panel will explore what better R&D measurements mean for small businesses, industry, state and national economic leaders. The briefing will feature the following panelists and an open discussion:
Moderator: Stephen Merrill, Ph.D., The National Academies, Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy (STEP)
Panelists:
• Carol Corrado, Ph.D., McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University
• Martin Fleming, Ph.D., IBM
• Steve Landefeld, Ph.D., Bureau of Economic Analysis)
• Andrew Lo, Ph.D., Laboratory for Financial Engineering, MIT Sloan School of Management
The Science & the Congress Project was established in 1995 to provide a neutral and credible source of scientific information targeted to policymakers on Capitol Hill. Expert speakers are chosen to provide a balanced presentation about the topic under discussion, and their comments are independent of any position that may be held by the ACS, the sponsors of ACS Science & the Congress, or its co-hosts. For more information, click here. The American Chemical Society is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. With more than 163,000 members, ACS is the world’s largest scientific society and a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related research through its multiple databases, peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences.
