Fraunhofer annual meeting and the organization’s anniversary year

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 10 maggio 2019

Throughout 2019, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is celebrating its 70th anniversary, as are the Federal Republic of Germany and its constitution, the Basic Law. Founded with the goal of rebuilding the local economy, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has a clear focus on new key technologies and markets, and is both Europe’s leading organization for applied research and the German economy’s innovation engine. At Fraunhofer’s annual meeting in its anniversary year, which included presentation of the Fraunhofer research prizes, some 700 guests from the worlds of politics, business and society gathered in Munich to focus on the technologies that will shape the future of German industry, and to honor the stellar achievements of outstanding scientists. Speakers included Germany’s chancellor, Dr. Angela Merkel, the mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter, and the president of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Prof. Reimund Neugebauer.
“For 70 years now, Fraunhofer has been a mainstay of Germany’s science community, which is highly respected worldwide. Fraunhofer innovations drive the economy,” explained Prof. Reimund Neugebauer, president of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. “By our own understanding, we set the pace and drive technological progress. Our employees are entrepreneurs and visionaries – and the key to our success. After all, Fraunhofer researchers don’t just pose the right questions, they also find answers to them that are sustainable and add value. I am particularly pleased that, in our 70th anniversary year, the high quality of the submissions allows us to award not only the Fraunhofer Human-Centered Technology Prize, but as many as four Joseph von Fraunhofer Prizes.”
On March 26, 1949, State Secretary Hugo Geiger invited 210 scientists, entrepreneurs and members of society to the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs. He aimed to help revive the economies of Bavaria and Germany by setting up the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. While children played amid the rubble, and the Wirtschaftswunder – Germany’s postwar economic miracle – was yet a distant prospect, the Munich office’s staff of just three people took up the challenge of advancing applied research in Germany. Electing Hermann von Siemens president in the mid-1950s and founding the first of its institutes, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft gradually evolved to become a mainstay of research in Germany. In the mid-1960s, Fraunhofer was officially designated the German science community’s umbrella organization for applied research. In the 1970s, the Fraunhofer model of performance-based funding sparked the dynamic success that shows no signs of slowing. Germany’s reunification presented unexpected opportunities to expand. Moving swiftly and resolutely, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft was quicker than other research organizations to seize the day, setting up more than 20 new institutes and facilities in the states that had newly joined the Federal Republic.
With 72 institutes and research facilities, more than 26,600 employees, an annual research budget of more than 2.5 billion euros and many international alliances, Fraunhofer is one of the most effective research organizations. Contract research accounts for more than two-thirds of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s budget; funding from federal and state governments for roughly a third. Building on these assets and its clear focus on new technologies and markets, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has become the German economy’s innovation engine. Its inventions range from airbags, white LEDs and dandelion rubber to mp3 technology.

WJC President Lauder commends US move to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as terrorist organization

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 11 aprile 2019

NEW YORK – World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder commended US President Donald S. Trump on Monday for moving to formally deem Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp as a foreign terrorist organization, marking the first time the US has ever given such a designation to another government.“President Trump has taken a courageous and unrivaled step today in forcefully calling out terrorism by its name and making it clear to the world that Iran’s ideology of violence and oppression will not be tolerated or sanctioned in any way by the United States,” said Lauder.“The moral leadership shown by the US today should be emulated by all proponents of democracy, justice and humanity. It is inconceivable that the same international community that clearly designates groups like Al-Qaida and ISIS as terrorist organizations should turn a blind eye to the very real and present danger posed by Iran, and its proxies including Hezbollah around the world,” Lauder added.“Iran is without a doubt one of the greatest threats to the world today, and particularly to Israel, the United States, and global Jewish communities. Through its long arm, it finances terror and international crime across continents, subverts any semblance of democracy or civil rights within its own borders, and holds the key to some of the deadliest weaponry known to man, with the stated intention of destroying the Jewish state and its nemeses in the West,” Lauder added. “We urge the international community to follow the US’ lead and treat Iran’s Revolutionary Guard exactly for what it is, a terrorist militia that thrives on repression and blood,” Lauder said.

Europe needs to develop a common strategy against bullying: key message of the 1st Conference of the European Anti-bullying Network

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 13 giugno 2014

eventAthens – More than 500 people across Europe took part in the 1st Conference of the European Anti-bullying Network hosted by the Greek NGO “The Smile of the Child” during a high-level event that was held under the auspices of the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The conference allowed academia, civil society organizations and national and international governmental organizations to discuss on the serious problem of bullying, exchange good practices in the area and present interesting data and studies on this serious problem. The official establishment of the Network will be announced on 13 June, 2014in an effort to promote a common strategy against bullying and coordinate anti-bullying actions and initiatives.More specifically, thehigh-level Conference was organized in the framework of the European Anti-bullying Network project that was coordinated by “The Smile of the Child” and was implemented in cooperation with 16 organizations across 12 EU Member States under the funding of the Daphne III Programme of the European Commission. Highlight of this conference was the speech by Dan Olweus, Professor of Psychology, and world leading researcher in the area of bullying, who provided some interestingfactson the phenomenon and some myths andintervention programs to address bullying in schools. He underlined the importance of analyzing cyber bullying in the right context and revealed that most cases of cyber bullying originate in the school setting. According to him, most students are bullied or bully other children in traditional ways, while he provided evidence showing that there has been no systematic increase in cyber bullying despite the common belief.”Bullying among children and youth is a serious problem in most countries but by no means an intractable problem. With knowledge and research-based counter-efforts, it is possible to considerably reduce bullying problems, eliminate much personal suffering and make society save large amounts of money” he highlighted.
In his opening address, “The Smile of the Child” Chairperson Costas Yannopoulos presented the continuous work of the Greek organization in the area of bullying prevention and framed the importance of the initiative of the Greek NGO to establish the European Anti-bullying Networkin cooperation with 16 organizations from 12 EU countries. A plenary panel discussion co-organized by “The Smile of the Child” and ILGA-Europe focused on the European policies against bullying. Vaso Artinopoulou, Professor of Criminology at Panteion University in Greece presented the European strategy against bullying developed in the framework of the EU-funded project “European Anti-bullying Network” and highlighted the need of a European approach and response on a European level. Special Rapporteur on Child Protection in Ireland Shannon Geoffrey contributed his expert input analyzing the human rights standards related to school bullying, while the Head of the LGBT Unit in the Council of Europe Eleni Tsetsekou focused on what the Council of Europe can do towards ensuring a violence-free education in Europe. Frank Pierobon, Head of Equal Opportunities in schools from DG Education and Culture, framed the importance of human rights education as a prerequisite for equality, while Joe Koswic from GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) presented how a global knowledge base on homophobic and transphobic bullying is promoted in the United States. During the conference, interesting data was also presented showing that Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Greece are the countries with the higher percentage of students being involved in bullying either as victims, bullies and bully-victims among 41 countries across the globe. According to the same study, Sweden is the country with the lowest percentage. A new poll conducted and presented by BeatBullying shows that more than half (55%) of children in Europe who have been bullied said they became depressed as a result, with over a third saying they harmed themselves (35%) or thought about suicide (38%). The poll of more than 2,000 adults and children from across Europe found that worryingly, 34% of adults thought that bullying is regarded as a ‘normal part of growing up’, and one in six adults (16%) said it is regarded as “character building” by most people in their country. Studies conducted in Greece show that 6.3% of teenagers have been cyber bullied more than once over the last 4 months, while 40% of teachers believe that the incidents of school violence remain hushed up and 84% of parents that school bullying and violence is on the rise. Equally alarming, professional assistance in Greece is provided to less than 1 in 10 children who experience some sort of violence and victimization. The conference offered dynamic small group sessions covering wide-range areas in the bullying phenomenon such as cyber-bullying, teen relationships and bullying, prevention projects in schools, teachers’ and students’ perspectives, victimization of children and risk factors for bullying. During the conference participants had the opportunity to attend experiential workshops provided by field workers and professionals, highlighting good practices and educational tools in tackling bullying. These sessions were based on different schools of psychotherapy and techniques such as role playing, expression of feelings and drama therapy and aimed to empower teachers and professionals dealing with bullying incidents.

WJC President Lauder condemns Palestinian unity accord

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 27 aprile 2014

palestinaNEW YORK – World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder today condemned the reconciliation deal announced by Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas, which could lead to a unity government between the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, which is led by Mahmoud Abbas, and the Hamas government in Gaza. “After many months of negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, we finally see the PA’s true colors: Mahmoud Abbas has decided that he would rather reconcile with the terrorist organization Hamas than make peace with Israel,” Lauder said. “All of the time and political capital expended by Secretary of State John Kerry and President Obama, all of the terrorist murderers released by Israel, all of this has been wasted on what was essentially a subterfuge. Abbas has now shown the world that he never seriously considered a two-state solution nor the acceptance of Israel as a Jewish State.”Lauder continued: “Instead of a peace treaty and the possibility of advancing his people out of the squalor they have lived in for more than 60 years, we have unity of Fatah and Hamas – two Palestinian entities that would rather destroy Israel and kill Jews than live in peace. This is one more dark chapter in an  old book that is filled with blood, terror, poverty and very little hope. And in the end, it’s hardly just Israel that will suffer, but the Palestinian people as well.”

il BRIC, volano della ripresa economica

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 10 luglio 2009

(Mario Lettieri, sottosegretario all’Economia nel governo Prodi Paolo Raimondi, economista)

Commemorate Cesar Chavez’s birthday

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 1 aprile 2009

President Barack Obama made the following statement to commemorate Cesar Chavez’s birthday: “Today, on what would have been his 82nd birthday, Cesar Chavez’s legacy as an educator, environmentalist, and as a civil rights leader who struggled for fair treatment and fair wages for America’s workers is important for every American to remember.  Having begun as a farmworker, Cesar Chavez eventually co-founded the United Farm Workers and struggled to provide hundreds of thousands of people with better working conditions and the chance to live a better life. The cause of fair treatment and fair wages for America’s workers lives on today through the work of countless others. Chavez’s rallying cry, “Sí Se Puede” – “Yes We Can,” was more than a slogan, it was an expression of hope and a rejection of those who said farmworkers could not organize, and could not take on the growers. Through his courage, Cesar Chavez taught us that a single voice could change our country, and that together, we could make America a stronger, more just, and more prosperous nation.”
