Image of Tainan Old Watercourse to Participate in Global Photography Contest

The Ministry of Culture (MOC) has announced the winners of the “Loving Monuments” photography contest. The winner is a photograph capturing the aesthetic of the Garden Watercourse Museum in Tainan, Taiwan. The contest, running from September to October, was held by the MOC’s Taiwan Cultural Memory Bank project in collaboration with Wiki Loves Monuments, the world’s largest photography contest for historical monuments.In this year’s contest, the panel selected three winning pieces and 47 outstanding works. The photo of the Garden Watercourse Museum, which took the first prize, speaks of the historical, cultural, and artistic values of Taiwan’s heritage site through skillful composition, exposure, and colors.Acclaimed for representing the characteristics of Taiwan’s cultural diversity, the photos featuring Wanjin Catholic Church and Dalongdong Baoan Temple won the second prize and third prize, respectively.Along with the winning photos, seven works, including images of Dongyindao Lighthouse, Tamshui Yinshan Temple, the Museum of Drinking Water, the Lin Family Mansion and Garden, Beigang Chaotian Temple, Cihou Fort, and Longteng Bridge, will represent Taiwan to participate in the Wiki Loves Monuments global contest.The winning photos will be collected by Taiwan Cultural Memory Bank and through the Creative Commons license (CC-BY-SA), the images will be registered as cultural assets that can be used all over the world.Following the open call for “Loving Monuments,” the event held another open call for “Memories Collection,” inviting the public to submit photographs that embody collective memories of the past. The event has attracted many people to share individual and group photos, spanning one that captured the image of elephant Lin Wang, the most popular and famous animal in Taiwan, the portrait of one’s grandmother working as a hairdresser apprentice when she was young, and the scene of ring toss games in traditional markets.Each photo preserves the collective memories of Taiwan and echoes the spirit of “compiling each person’s memory into the nation’s cultural memories.” The MOC will also partner with Wiki Loves Monuments to organize a workshop for documenting memories of people in Taiwan.Taiwan Cultural Memory Bank project aims at preserving and reconstructing collective memories of the land and the people in Taiwan, and awakens the cultural identity of people on this island.

Mostra dei lavori degli studenti del Master in Photography and Visual Design

STARDUST è un progetto espositivo che presenta al Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea degli studenti del Master in Photography and Visual Design di NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, a cura di Luca Andreoni e Francesco Zanot, rispettivamente docente e Course Leader del Master. Si tratta di una serie di progetti editoriali restituiscono nuove interpretazioni e declinazioni del genere western nel cinema, attraverso la fotografia.
Gli studenti hanno saputo cogliere tale varietà interna al cinema western, producendo oltre 30 lavori a tutto campo. In alcuni casi hanno scelto di attenersi alle più note tipicità del genere, investigando i temi del paesaggio, della violenza, dell’avventura; in altri casi, invece, hanno utilizzato questo spunto come base per una riflessione sul nostro tempo. Ne scaturiscono numerose e intriganti sorprese, sia per i conoscitori del western, sia per coloro che hanno sempre frequentato altri territori cinematografici. Senza dubbio gli studenti hanno sfruttato con grande libertà le strategie più allargate oggi a disposizione della fotografia contemporanea, attivando e spesso combinando tra loro le pratiche tradizionali della fotografia (dalla fotografia documentaria al reportage) con quelle più recenti, come il riuso di immagini, la costruzione di immagini impossibili, l’elaborazione digitale finalizzata alla trasformazione della realtà.L’allestimento consentirà al pubblico di sfogliare i libri realizzati in copia unica dagli studenti grazie alla creazione di una libreria temporanea nella sala conferenze del Museo e sarà completato da una serie di poster progettati ad hoc, come richiamo immediato all’immaginario cinematografico.

Photography Exhibition: “Striking Piazzas Of Sicily”, by Armando Rotoletti

Toronto 09/13/2019. After 156 days of shooting; 7000km crossing Sicily coast to coast, east to west and north to south; 256 emails sent to municipalities requesting to free the squares of cars and catering equipment that would upset their appearance; Armando Rotoletti, renowned portrait and reportage photographer from Messina, offers to us in this book 82 Sicilian squares as we have never seen them. His squares lay empty in wait for the people to arrive, stirring our imagination, unnerving, bewitching, annihilating and surprising us.
The art historian, Salvatore Settis, says about the photographic book of Armando Rotoletti: “In Sicily, the square is a scenery that does not follow any script, but that of the pulsating life of its city. The square in Sicily (or rather, in Italy) is the most original creation of an idea of a city that not only acts as a den or nest but rather as the temple of humans, the theatre of political and social life. Therefore, Rotoletti’s enterprise is somewhat heroic (because of the difficulties surely met taking photos of squares without the thousands of contraptions invading them), but above all, it is innervated with beauty and hope.”
Armando Rotoletti was born in Messina, Italy in 1958. He studied at the St. Mary College of London and at the London Polytechnic (nowadays University of Westminster) and then he moved to Milan to work in photojournalism. Between 1985 and 1995 he produced a number of works which appeared in both personal and ensemble exhibitions. In 1990 he was invited by Grazia Neri to join her famous agency, thus starting his career as portrait photographer of renown people from the arts, entertainment and economics. His work was published on a number of magazines such as Corriere della Sera’s supplements “Sette” and “Io donna”, Vanity Fair and The Sunday Times.For the past fifteen years, he has also been involved in works dedicated to social investigation and photographic stories of his sicilian territories. Among his books: Casa della Carità. I volti e le storiw(2005), Barbieri di Sicilia (2007), Gente di Barbaresco (2013), Circoli di conversazione a Biancavilla (2013), Valelapena (2013), Scicli, città felice (2014), Vino e gente dell’ Etna, (2014) Il volto dell’ IO (2015) Noto. Le pietre e i volti (2015).With his most recent publication, Sicilia in Piazza (Striking Piazzas of Sicily, 2017), he continued investigating the land of Sicily by working on a complex project that lead him to photograph 82 squares of famous cities and other lesser known towns, by following a rigorous method of emptying the piazzas from cars and precarious installations: a magnificent fresco of these spaces, free -at least for the duration of a shot- from the visual conditioning of our age.

Samsung Takes Mobile Photography to the Next Level with Industry’s

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today introduced 108 megapixel (Mp) Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX, the first mobile image sensor in the industry to go beyond 100 million pixels. With the latest addition, Samsung will expand its 0.8μm image sensor offerings from its recently announced ultra-high 64Mp to 108Mp, a resolution equivalent to that of a high-end DSLR camera. Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX is a one-of-a-kind mobile image sensor and is the result of close collaboration between Xiaomi Corp. and Samsung.
With over 100 million effective pixels enabling extremely sharp photographs rich in detail, the ISOCELL Bright HMX also produces exceptional photos even in extreme lighting conditions. Being the first mobile image sensor to adopt a large 1/1.33-inch size, the HMX can absorb more light in low-lit settings than smaller sensors and its pixel-merging Tetracell technology allows the sensor to imitate big-pixel sensors, producing brighter 27Mp images. In bright environments, the Smart-ISO, a mechanism that intelligently selects the level of amplifier gains according to the illumination of the environment for optimal light-to-electric signal conversion, switches to a low ISO to improve pixel saturation and produce vivid photographs. The mechanism uses a high ISO in darker settings that helps reduce noise, resulting in clearer pictures. For advanced filming, the HMX supports video recording without losses in field-of-view at resolutions up to 6K (6016 x 3384) 30-frames-per-second (fps).

The start of 2012 heralds the close of cazenove+loyd’s hugely successful 2011 travel photography competition in association with Leica. cazenove+loyd MD, Henrietta Loyd says, “We have been delighted to receive thousands of entries over the last twelve months, some of which have been truly exceptional and others simply extraordinary! It has been an honour to give so many budding photographers a platform to display their work.” Leica MD David Bell heads up the highly respected judging panel alongside writer/photographer Jonathan Margolis and freelance photographer Will Cheung. Monthly winners have been selected over the last year to give twelve fantastic finalists, each of whom have won a prize generously donated by Leica. Mostra “Testimoni del nostro tempo”

Capalbio 14 agosto 2010, nelle sale delle esposizioni de  “Il Frantoio” in piazza della provvidenza, si inaugura la mostra “Testimoni del nostro tempo”, che  riunisce per la prima volta nel paese, le immagini dei fotografi italiani riconosciute meritevoli di segnalazione dalla World Press Photo Foundation.  In oltre mezzo secolo di storia della fondazione, dal 1955 al 2010, sono 47 i fotografi italiani che si sono distinti nella competizione, con un totale di 74 differenti premi, tra cui il World Press Photo of the year, riconoscimento vinto da Francesco Zizola nel 1996 e da Pietro Masturzo nel 2009.  L’esposizione, ideata dal 10b photography, è affidata alla cura di Daniele Protti, direttore del mensile L’Europeo. Il 5 marzo 2010 è uscito un numero speciale de L’Europeo interamente dedicato alla mostra, con un’introduzione di Ferdinando Scianna. Scrive Protti: “Curare questa mostra e realizzare un numero analogo per L’Europeo non è un’iniziativa insolita, rientra nella identità storica ed editoriale della testata. «Gli articoli si guardano, le fotografie si leggono», così insegnava Arrigo Benedetti. Un paradosso solo apparente. In realtà  l’affermazione di un primato che né tv né web riescono a scalfire: l’immagine fotografica di alta qualità non è un ‘arredo’, ma parte integrante della comunicazione. Sono felice, dunque, di collaborare alla realizzazione della mostra e di dedicare il 62° volume della nuova serie editoriale de L’Europeo a molti dei grandi fotografi italiani”. Art calls at fundacion

Fundación Marcelino Botín, a Spanish institution created in 1964, launches a call for a new edition of the Art Workshop, to be directed by Mona Hatoum, and the 18th edition of the Visual Arts Grants. The call is international in both cases. Mona Hatoum Art Workshop It will be held between July 5 and 16, at the Villa Iris space, in the coastal city of Santander, in northern Spain. Mona Hatoum will select a maximum of 15 alumni and the workshop will be conducted in English. The Workshop will focus on a mixed media approach towards making artworks and engage in discussions on the issues of communicability of artistic ideas and experience. The call is open to anyone interested in experimenting with multimedia works of art (installations, photography, video, works with found and recovered objects, representations and other presentations of innovative ideas) who are willing to have a critical debate on their ideas with a group. Knowledge of Mona Hatoum’s work and a wish to learn from her creative process are important. Whoever wishes to participate in the workshop must send a photocopy of their National ID or Passport, personal info, CV, photographs of their recent work and a text in English stating the reasons for participating. Mona Hatoum expressed interest since the mid 1980s in a series of works based on representations and videos focused mostly on the body. Since the early 1990s, her work approached ever more large scale installations and sculptures. She has developed a language where familiar and everyday life objects usually transform into strange, threatening, and even dangerous things. Fundación Marcelino Botín has organized a solo show of the artist in its Santander venue during the fall of 2010.

Alexander Rodchenko: Revolution in Photography

The exhibition will contain more then 200 vintage photographs some of which have never been exhibited in the West before. Alexander Rodchenko (1891-1956) is one of the great innovators of twentieth-century avant-garde art and one of its most versatile practitioners.  Having first gained international acclaim as a painter, sculptor and graphic designer, Rodchenko took up the practice of photography in the early 1920s, convinced that it would become the artistic medium of his era. Over the course of the following two decades he developed a bold new vocabulary of acute camera angles, extreme foreshortenings of perspective and close-ups of surprising details. In addition to introducing design as an integral element of photography, Rodchenko’s approach balanced formal concerns with an interest in documenting the social and political life of the Soviet Union. In the process, he helped to change the way people perceived not only photography, but also the role of the photographer.
Tracking the development of his photographic work over the course of two decades, Alexander Rodchenko: Revolution in Photography reveals the artist’s talent for experimentation as well as the extraordinary range of his work. From sharp-witted photomontage to documentary reportage in Moscow’s streets, from dynamic architectural studies to intimate portraits of his circle, Rodchenko’s photographic activity possessed a breath and scope matched by few artists of his day. Abandoning -pure’ art in favour of developing a visual language that could address a mass audience, Rodchenko applied himself as a photographer and designer to the production of posters, magazine and book design, advertisements for state-owned enterprises as well as photojournalism and other forms of documentary photography.  (Image: Lily Brik. Tim Roda: Make Believe

tim rodaBerlin until 31/10/2009 Rudi-Dutschke-Str. 26, Galerie Michael Janssen Tim Roda has something that many emerging artists don’t – three boys under the age of 11 and a burgeoning marriage. And, because he has made them the content of his theatrically staged photographs for more than half a decade, Roda’s work is also something of an anomaly. It deals with content we don’t see much of in contemporary art – the familial. Rejecting the banality popular in contemporary photography, Roda features his wife and young boys throughout his black-and-white prints so that the relationships between father and son, wife and husband, mother and child are central to each composition.
Tim Roda (*1977 in Lancaster PA, USA) lives and works in New York surrounded by his family that represents, at the same time, his main artistic “material” and source of inspiration. He graduated whith excellence from the University of Washington. He took part to different residencies all around the world and received several awards, such as the Fullbright Award in 2008.
