Marine spatial planning: Sustainably managing our seas at global level

The blue economy is full of opportunities for low-carbon, sustainable growth. But to make sure that these activities do not clash for space or damage the marine environment, careful planning is needed. That is exactly what maritime spatial planning does. In this guest blog, the authors explore how the EU and international partners are planning the ocean. Human wellbeing and prosperity are inextricably linked to the good health of the ocean, seas, coasts and related resources. Both through their conservation and sustainable use. Unfortunately, marine ecosystems are facing increasingly significant stress from climate change, habitat destruction and overexploitation, threatening the economic activities that rely upon these resources. At the same time, intensified human activities in coastal and marine waters lack, to achieve sustainability, the required integrated planning and decision-making, including transboundary coordination.The expanding use of the ocean space show the increase of conflicts: amongst uses but also in between uses and nature. This requires specific plans to regulate and reduce human impacts.

Bridging the Dream Scholarship Program

Sallie Mae, the nation’s saving, planning, and paying for college company, today announced it will renew and expand its Bridging the Dream Scholarship Program, offering seven $25,000 scholarships to deserving high school juniors and seniors this fall. Sallie Mae’s Bridging the Dream Scholarship Program recognizes students who have excelled both inside and outside of the classroom, but whose financial circumstances or other obstacles in life may not allow them to pursue a college education. High school counselors and community leaders can nominate students now through Sept. Over the past two years, Sallie Mae has awarded more than $300,000 in scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students through the Bridging the Dream Scholarship Program. The company previously offered five scholarships per year but is expanding to seven scholarships to honor the legacy of former executive, and architect of the Bridging the Dream Scholarship Program, Charlie Rocha.
Last year’s Bridging the Dream Scholarship Program recipients, nominated by school counselors or leaders of their local community were: Kate Griffith of Ebensburg, Pennsylavnia, who is attending Point Park University; Damian Lee of Lake City, South Carolina, who is attending Northeastern University; Kylie Rapp of Frankfort, Indiana, who plans to study elementary education in 2019; Jobany Quiterio of Taylorsville, Utah who is attending the University of Utah; and Peter Za of Portland, Oregon, who is attending Babson College. The EU’s Maritime Spatial Planning goes global

160 experts from all over the world have gathered in Brussels on 24 and 25 May for the first meeting of the International Forum on Maritime Spatial Planning. They have discussed ongoing projects both in the EU and abroad and shared views on the challenges of planning public sea space across borders.The global character of the event stems from the recent alliance between the European Commission and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) – an international organisation with a long-standing experience on the issue of maritime spatial planning.
The event is the first of a series, as the Forum is scheduled to meet twice a year between now and 2020. The conclusions drawn along the process will feed into the drafting of a new set of international guidelines on cross-border maritime spatial planning, expected for 2021. Indeed the Forum is one of the actions mentioned in the 2017 Joint Roadmap to accelerate Marine/Maritime Spatial Planning processes worldwide, in which the European Commission and IOC-UNESCO commit to a number of key initiatives in favour of good ocean governance.Maritime Spatial Planning is the rational organisation of sea and coastal areas so as to cater for the different – and sometimes competing – needs of various economic activities (such as fisheries, aquaculture, transport, energy and so on) and to make sure they are carried out safely and sustainably. It needs to be negotiated across sectors and across borders. The next Forum session will take place in the autumn and will also be devoted to dialogue and exchanges between planners from different parts of the world.

NanoFlowcell is planning entry into FIA Formula E

londonLondon (UK) and Kilchberg (CH), August 2017 – nanoFlowcell Holdings confirms that the company is holding discussions with Formula E Holdings on its participation in the FIA Formula E Championship and it’s intend to enter the Championship with a Formula E race car with nanoFlowcell® 48VOLT flow-cell drive.
A throttled and adapted drive system based on the type installed in the QUANT 48VOLT could be used to fulfil the criteria for the maximum battery and motor output. For the 2018/19 season, the FIA wants to allow battery output of 54 kilowatt hours and raise motor output to 250 kW. As it stands, the nanoFlowcell® all-wheel electric drive in the QUANT 48VOLT has a maximum output of 760 hp (560 kW). Energy is provided by a flow cell with six membranes which can deliver a sustained supply of 300 kWh. It enables the QUANT 48VOLT to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in less than 2.4 seconds, reach a top speed of more than 300 km/h and cover a range of more than 1,000 kilometres without refuelling.
With its planned participation in the FIA Formula E Championship, nanoFlowcell Holdings is showing that electric mobility can be designed to be environmentally compatible and future-safe without compromising system output and inherent safety (low voltage) as well as the ecological and economic sustainability of the technology.“Our participation in the FIA Formula E Championship will help us promote the merits of flow-cell energy technology on an international stage and raise awareness within the industry that the prospects of success with nanoFlowcell® energy are reliable and future-safe – and not just in racing,” explains La Vecchia. “In terms of forward-looking, socially responsible and environmentally compatible electric mobility, we hope that the FIA permits a flow-cell-driven electric vehicle to participate in the FIA Formula E Championship, complete with its many competitive advantages. May the better technology win!” Taking into consideration the preparations required in order to participate in the FIA Formula E Championship and assuming acceptance on the part of the FIA, it will be at least the racing season after next before a QUANT flow-cell electric sports car is able to compete in its first official FIA race.

Countries where women claim to have the best breasts make holiday planning easier this summer

best breastTravelling internationally this summer just got a whole lot more enticing as data from a recent study has revealed the Top 20 Countries of Women with the Best Breasts, meaning itineraries can now be planned specifically to take in the bountiful beauty of the local ladies.The study, conducted by VictoriaMilan – a dating site for married and attached people looking to have extramarital affairs, dived into its data archives and confirmed more than 1 million women in 20 countries across the globe believe their breasts are their most attractive physical feature. The Top 20 list has been created using the percentages of women in these countries who have beautiful bosoms.Scandivanian countries take out the top two slots: Denmark comes out on top with 28.1% of Danish women claiming their cleavage is worthy of international travel, while Sweden heaves into second place with a sumptuous 26.3% of Swedish females rating their décolletage as their #1 physical feature.
The United Kingdom busts into third place, with 26.2% of UK women claiming their boobs are the best you’ll find – and might make the English seaside a little more appealing.
Almost one quarter of Greek (25.3%), Norwegian (25.1%), Dutch (24.1%) and German (24.1%) ladies will be showcasing their assets this summer, making each of these countries tantalising travel destinations – Germany in particular, as even if they don’t have access to a beach, German ladies aren’t shy about letting it all hang out in public parks.
23.1% of New Zealanders say their boobs are their best feature – it’s a long way to travel to get a glimpse of some Kiwi cleavage so tourists would have to be pretty determined to take the trek to NZ to see the locals bare their bosoms.
Just over one-fifth of Austrian ladies think their cleavage is prize-winning, while similarly Irish and Finnish women rate their boobs around the same level (20.7% and 20.5% respectively).While passion and beauty are in their DNA, Italian senoras find physical features other than their boobs to be draw cards, with just 19.0% claiming their cleavage is their best feature. Australians are potentially too concerned with sunscreen and covering up with wetsuits at the beach – just 18.3% say their boobs are the feature they like to showcase as it is the best their bodies have to offer.Surprisingly, women in Belgium (17.7%) and the United States (17.5%) rate their breasts similarly – less than one-fifth of both nationalities say they are top heavy and proud. 16.7% of ladies from Switzerland say their boobs are worth crossing borders for, and will have their most sexy body parts on show in the sun this season.Spanish senoritas are famous for their voluptuous and sensual figures, however just 13.6% say their boobs are their #1 feature. Just over one-tenth of Canadian women (12.5%) say their Canadian cleavages are the best in the world and worth taking a plane ride to take a look at.Just 9.2% of Czech women think their breasts are best, and with the gorgeous faces, silky smooth legs that go for days and blonde hair, its not surprising they choose other features as their most attractive bits and pieces.
South African women are bold and beautiful, but believe they have more to offer physically than their breasts with just 8.9% saying their cleavages are worthy tourist attractions.Founder and CEO of Victoria Milan, Sigurd Vedal, said the list of Top 20 Countries of Women with the Best Breasts would make planning enjoyable holidays a whole lot easier.
“Imagine how much more appealing a family holiday would be if men have the best breasts in the world to feast their eyes on. This data is taken from self assessments any women, who intimately know their own bodies and have nominated their breasts as items that should be celebrated and showcased. Family Planning Summit in London in July

United Nations, New York,An event is scheduled to be held in London in July to generate political commitment and substantial resources to meet the family planning needs of women in the world’s poorest countries by 2020. The event will be organized by the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DfID) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, with support from UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, and other partners.
“The freedom to choose how many children to have and when is a fundamental human right. By making this right a reality for all, we can advance maternal health, child survival and gender equality,” said UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin.”I call on all stakeholders to join the global effort to improve access to voluntary family planning as an integral part of national health systems,” added Dr. Osotimehin. “It is one of the smartest and most cost-effective investments countries can make towards sustainable development and the empowerment of women and young people.”In trying to exercise their basic human right to determine the number and spacing of their children, more than 215 million women in developing countries want to delay or avoid a pregnancy, but lack effective means of family planning. The July event is meant to intensify efforts to close the gap of unmet needs so that individuals and couples will have the means to make their human right to voluntary family planning a reality. Increasing access to voluntary family planning information, services and supplies has dramatic health benefits for women and children, preventing up to a quarter of maternal deaths. It is also an extremely cost-effective investment towards the achievement of the maternal and child health Millennium Development Goals and wider development outcomes. And yet, global funding on this issue has been lacking.

Denying Entry to Greenpeace Warship

Washington, D.C. The Consumers Alliance for Global Prosperity (CAGP) yesterday applauds Indonesia’s government for denying the Greenpeace warship Rainbow Warrior entry into the Port of Jakarta. The vessel – which is used to instigate civil disobedience, undermine the democratic process and advocate anti-growth policies – was attempting to dock in Jakarta to applaud Indonesia and Norway’s signing this past May of the Letter of Intent governing the forestry moratorium between the two nations. In addition, Greenpeace was planning to promote further trade restrictions against Indonesia’s citizens and businesses while in port. CAGP Spokesman and Institute for Liberty President Andrew Langer issued the following statement on behalf of CAGP, urging Indonesians to question the motives of those supporting the moratorium, such as Greenpeace and other elitist, Western organizations: “Indonesia’s decision to deny Greenpeace access to her largest seaport was a telling sign that the people of Indonesia have had enough. The pro-poverty scare tactics employed by organizations like Greenpeace threaten the livelihoods of millions of Indonesians. And with 20 percent of Indonesia’s population already living in poverty, using media-savvy antics like the Rainbow Warrior steals the chance of a better life away from even more hard-working families. “The Letter of Intent between Indonesia and Norway, and the forestry moratorium that it outlines, would destroy between 280,000 and 700,000 jobs directly in the short term and condemn more than 10 million people who currently depend on the agricultural industry into poverty. The industries that will be affected most by this ill-advised cooperation currently make up almost five percent of Indonesia’s gross domestic product. “Economic growth around the world has lifted hundreds of millions of men and women out of poverty, provided jobs, income and hope and has the potential to do the same in Southeastern Asia. CAGP demands that Greenpeace and other elitist, European organizations stop promoting their anti-prosperity agenda in the developing world, and instead begin making the human choice – the moral choice – for the benefit of the world’s poor.”

Chris Twyman announces acquisition of Jobster

Boston Chris Twyman, a 2004 graduate of Hult International Business School, is making a name for himself as an entrepreneur. In 2006, Twyman founded Zapoint, a Boston-based leading provider of employee career management and organizational planning solutions. Earlier this month, Twyman announced the acquisition of Jobster, a social networking jobs referral program, and the resulting enterprise will provide the human resources industry with cutting-edge, high-tech career management tools. Due to the management skills he began developing while studying at Hult, the 37-year-old Twyman feels prepared to take on this new challenge.
