CES 2019: Bosch extends its position as a leading IoT company

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 9 gennaio 2019

More and more, the internet of things (IoT) is changing our world. At CES 2019 in Las Vegas, Bosch is showing what it is already capable of today. From a concept for a shuttle vehicle that makes a new kind of mobility tangible, to fridges with connectivity that give advice on food storage, to smart lawn mowers that learn by doing – the spectrum of solutions Bosch is presenting at the world’s largest consumer electronics show is huge. “Bosch recognized the huge opportunities of the IoT early on. We have been actively shaping the connected world for nearly ten years now,” says the Bosch board of management member Dr. Markus Heyn. “Today, we are a leading IoT company. Step by step, we have extended our software and IT expertise.” Using its own IoT cloud, the company has already carried out more than 270 projects in field such as mobility, smart homes, smart cities, and agriculture. The number of sensors and devices connected over the Bosch IoT Suite has risen nearly 40 percent since last year, and now stands at 8.5 million. One of the keys to further growth and new business opportunities on the internet of things is artificial intelligence (AI). This is also a field in which Bosch is playing a decisive part in driving developments. “We will best be able to unlock the potential of the IoT if we combine it with AI, and take our IoT and AI activities forward in parallel,” Heyn says. In his view, the relationship between the two fields is complementary: “The IoT needs intelligence. The use of connected things to gather data can be a decisive boost for the development of AI. It is only through AI that connected things become intelligent and learn to draw their own conclusions. Above all, we aim to achieve concrete improvements in people’s real, everyday lives – things such as more time, more security, more efficiency, and more convenience.” Here, Heyn cites the example of video-based fire detection: by using intelligent image analysis, security cameras are able to identify fires within a few seconds, even before the system’s sensors detect heat and smoke. In this way, fires can be detected considerably earlier than with conventional fire or smoke alarm systems. This saves valuable minutes in which lives can be saved.A second key to success on the path to the IoT age is partnerships. Here, Bosch is opting for a mix of traditional and new players. The alliance recently agreed with the Canadian platform provider Mojio has already resulted in the first integrated IoT platform for connected vehicles: in the event of an accident, a special Bosch algorithm can identify where and when the accident happened, and how severe it is. Via the Mojio cloud, the data are transmitted without any delay to the Bosch emergency service center, which automatically sends an emergency call to local rescue services. At the same time, a message is sent to a predetermined list of recipients, either as a text message or via the Mojio app. “Together with Mojio, we are connecting vehicles directly with the cloud. This means rescue services can get to the scene of an accident even faster than before,” says Mike Mansuetti, the president of Bosch North America. From the middle of next year, the IoT emergency solution will be available for nearly a million drivers in North America and Europe.

London sits in 47th position globally for European expatriates – below Edinburgh and Cardiff

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 14 aprile 2017

londonLondon continues to sit in 47th position globally. It is ranked below several other UK cities in the global liveability rankings, with Edinburgh and Cardiff coming in at 20th and 28th positions respectively.“London scores somewhat higher than other locations in the UK on air pollution and crime, as one would expect from a very large city. But the scores are still relatively low in the larger scheme of things and so a Western European expatriate would not require a location allowance for an assignment to London,” said Ashman.Tirana, Albania, has seen the most substantial improvement in its scoring out of all ranked European cities over a five-year period. Substantial upgrades to infrastructure and educational facilities have meant that it has risen by 11 places in the global rankings from 2013 to 2017.Kiev, Ukraine, is on the opposite side of the scale. Over a five-year period, its overall liveability continues to be damaged by the ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine. It has led to a significantly heightened Socio-political tensions scoring over this period.(font: ECA International)

Gay men and lesbian women less likely to be employed in a leadership position due to the sound of their voice

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 21 marzo 2017

londonLondon. Gay men and lesbian women face discrimination when seeking leadership positions due to the sound of their voice, a new study in the Archives of Sexual Behaviour has found. The study, carried out by researchers at the University of Surrey, also found that people thought gay men should be paid less than their heterosexual counterparts. During this study researchers presented voice samples of gay and heterosexual speakers and pictures, devoid of any background features and other characteristics, to a heterosexual sample group. Participants were not informed of the sexual orientation of the person but allowed to freely guess from the voice or face of the individual. The sample group were asked to form impressions about applicants for the fake position of CEO and evaluate the employability of candidates by responding to five statements (which were rated on a scale of one to five) and to report the amount of monthly salary they considered adequate. The process was then repeated with lesbian candidates.Researchers discovered that participants perceived men and women who they considered to be gay or lesbian, as inadequate for a leadership position. For male candidates, auditory and not facial features impacted on whether they were deemed suitable for the role. Researchers discovered that having a heterosexual- rather than a ‘gay- sounding’ voice created the impression that the speaker had typically masculine traits, which in turn increased their perceived suitability for the role and the chance of receiving a higher salary.Lesbian candidates were associated with a lack of femininity and identified as gender non-conforming and received less positive evaluation than heterosexual counterparts.Dr Fabio Fasoli said: “These results demonstrate that the mere sound of a voice is sufficient to trigger stereotyping denying gay- and lesbian-sounding speakers the qualities that are considered typical of their gender.“It is revealing, that despite all the work to lessen discrimination against the LGBT community, people subconsciously type cast an individual before getting to know them. This study highlights that it can be a real problem in the workplace and for people’s career prospects.”In another study participants were also asked to listen to the voices of two different speakers who pronounced a single sentence of neutral content and then requested to evaluate the speakers’ likely personality traits and personal interests (i.e. sports and fields of study). The traits and interests were manipulated in order to be recast characteristics/interests perceived to be “typically masculine” (e.g., football) and “typically feminine” (e.g., dance). In addition, participants were asked which of the speakers they would choose as an acquaintance. Similarly to the first study this was repeated with lesbian candidates.Researchers discovered that participants attributed more feminine traits to the gay than to the heterosexual speakers and lesbian speakers were more likely to be associated with masculine than to feminine characteristics. Interestingly, this happened without any mention of sexual orientation of the speakers demonstrating that vocal cues can lead to unfair stereotyping. When asked which of the speakers’ participants would choose as an acquaintance for an interaction, researchers found that male participants were more likely to avoid male gay-sounding speakers, suggesting a subtle impact of voice on social exclusion of gay individuals.Dr Fasoli added: “What is most concerning about this study is the subconscious behaviour intention of participants, where heterosexual male participants avoided choosing a gay male as an acquaintance.“This study demonstrates that unacceptable levels of discrimination, be they subconscious or conscious, still exists in our society, and we need to do more to tackle the discrimination faced by the LGBT community.”

Position Statement AME sulla terapia sostitutiva dell’Ipotiroidismo Primitivo

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 21 gennaio 2017

Mark Climate Technology delivers air handling units to “De Broodfabriek”

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 15 giugno 2016

Climate TechnologyThe Expo and Event Centre “De Broodfabriek” (formerly known as Darling Market) in Rijswijk (The Netherlands) has been equipped with a complete new heating system. To create the best possible indoor climate in the complex, Mark Climate Technology has delivered five air handling units. Additionally, five Mark air curtains have been installed to prevent that cold comes in through the loading and unloading doors during the winter months. Because the new heating system is more quiet and the event centre can be easier pleasantly heated, “De Broodfabriek” has been able to strengthen its position as an event location. The Mark Climate Technology air handling units placed on the roof are of the type AHU2520 and AHU3525. Together the units have a total maximum air flow of 117,000 m³/h with a nominal capacity of 1455 kW. The direct fired air curtains are placed above the overhead doors, which are 5 x 5 meter. Each air curtain contains a pilot burner of which the pilot light burns continuously, which makes sure the unit can be activated fast. Furthermore, the air curtain operates through two air flows: a primary (the air heater) and a secondary (residual heat from up in the hall) air flow. Since 1945 Mark Climate Technology (www.markclimate.com) has been manufacturer of climate control equipment: air heating, radiant heating, ventilation equipment and air handling units. Mark is based in Veendam (the Netherlands) and, together with branches in Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Poland and Romania, serves the whole of Europe.

Biosimilari: la sostenibilità si genera potendo curare al meglio un numero più grande di pazienti

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 19 ottobre 2015

MEPs want a binding and permanent scheme to distribute asylum seekers in the EU

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 17 luglio 2015

european parliamentA binding emergency mechanism to relocate an initial total of 40,000 asylum seekers from Italy and Greece to other EU member states was backed by civil liberties MEPs on Thursday. An upcoming permanent scheme, on which Parliament will decide jointly with the Council, must be based “on a more substantial contribution to solidarity and responsibility-sharing among member states”, MEPs say.”Parliament’s civil liberties committee has shown the Council today what’s what. While member states are muddling through and cannot agree on how to distribute 40,000 refugees, our committee has supported a binding distribution key by a large majority. There is no doubt that in the domain of migration policy, Europe obtains results only if all countries work together. We are also calling for a permanent distribution mechanism which must go substantially beyond the current proposals,” said the civil liberties committee rapporteur, Ska Keller (Greens/EFA, DE).
“It is particularly important that refugees are not sent as pieces of cargo through the EU, but that their preferences are taken into account. This is the only way to support the integration of refugees and prevent them from moving to another member state. Respecting the interests of refugees is essential for the success of the distribution key,” she added. The legislative resolution was approved by 42 votes to 14.
Parliament is consulted on this temporary emergency relocation mechanism under Article 78(3) of the Treaty. EU home affairs ministers will meet on 20 July to discuss it. Parliament will vote on its position in September. Once it has been adopted by the Council the decision will enter into force on the day after its publication in the EU Official Journal. When a permanent relocation system is proposed – which the Commission has said it will do by the end of the year – Parliament will have codecison powers, meaning that it will decide on the permanent scheme on an equal footing with the Council of the EU (member states).

Independent investigation

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 2 giugno 2015

amsterdamWhile the banks asserted that their consultants found nothing that would warrant the suspension of the project, they failed to mention that their own independent accountability mechanism was undertaking an investigation of the project. Indeed, by that time, the banks had already seen a draft of the ICM’s report with findings that the project was not in compliance with its own policies. “We were surprised to find out about the role of the banks in influencing the national process, as this is in contradiction to their assertions that they are not in a position to intervene in national decision-making.” said Anouk Franck, senior policy advisor at Both ENDS, based in Amsterdam. “They should now show their commitment in coming to a solution and start taking FPIC seriously, in the case of Barro Blanco, where due to delays in tackling the issue, the banks might need to accept losses on their loan. And they need to find ways to assure themselves FPIC is obtained where relevant, for example through human rights impact assessments.”
The handling of the complaint was a lengthy and at times frustrating process. GENISA refused to cooperate with the ICM and provide them with access to project documents, leading the banks to conclude a secret side agreement with GENISA. The secret side agreement superseded the publicly available procedures of the ICM and allowed GENISA to review the draft and final investigation reports before they were shared with complainants. “FMO and DEG are more concerned with protecting the interests of their client than they are with protecting the rights of those affected by the projects they finance,” said Kris Genovese, senior researcher at the Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations (SOMO). “It’s a tragic irony that banks asked the consent of the company to publish the ICM’s investigation report, but didn’t ask consent of Ngöbe-Buglé for the project.”
The Barro Blanco project was registered under the Clean Development Mechanism, a system under the Kyoto Protocol that allows the crediting of emission reductions from greenhouse gas abatement projects in developing countries. “As climate finance flows are expected to flow through various channels in the future, the lessons of Barro Blanco must be taken very seriously. To prevent that future climate mitigation projects have negative impacts, a strong institutional safeguard system that respects all human rights is required,” said Pierre-Jean Brasier, network coordinator at Carbon Market Watch. “The opportunity to establish such a necessary safeguards system is now, ahead of the Paris agreement, to put the respect of human rights on top of the UNFCCC agenda.”The ICM will monitor the banks’ implementation of corrective actions and recommendations. Meanwhile, the M10 expect FMO and DEG to withdrawal their investment from the project and ask that the Dutch and German governments show a public commitment to ensuring the rights of the affected Ngöbe-Buglé. At the same time, the banks should refrain from putting pressure on the Panamanian government.

Berlusconi in: Ruby red face

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 10 febbraio 2011

The Italian prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, has rarely been out of trouble during his 18-year-long political career. But le 5657/2011 of the Milan prosecutors’ oce looks as if it could give him his worst problems so far. The le, sent to a judge on February 9th, contains a request for Mr Berlusconi to be put on trial as soon as possible, charged with two unpleasant oences. Mr Berlusconi is accused of buying the services of a juvenile prostitute and then trying to hide the fact by taking illegal advantage of his position. The two oences carry maximum sentences of, respectively, 3and 12 years in prison. The prime minister denies any wrongdoing. He immediately hit back at the prosecutors, describing them as subversive, calling their investigation into his private life a disgrace and even threatening to sue the Italian state (though on what precise grounds is not clear). The 782 pages of witness statements and wiretap-transcripts in the le depict Mr Berlusconi as spending his free time as if he were one of the sleazier Roman emperors: inviting dozens of showgirls and courtesans to dinners at his home near Milan that were followed by bunga-bunga sessions involving erotic play that in turn led to sex.  Milan’s chief prosecutor, Edmondo Bruti Liberati, said that he and his colleagues had decided to ask for the prime minister to be indicted without a pre-trial hearing because of the obviousness of  the evidence against him. One of Mr Berlusconi’s guests was a young Moroccan runaway, Karima el-Mahroug, also known as Ruby Heartstealer, who the prosecutors say was aged 17 at the time. Under Italian law, it is illegal to pay for sexual services of any kind if the provider is under 18. Mr Berlusconi has admitted giving his young friend several thousand euros. But he and Ms el-Mahroug both say the money was a gift: the prime minister took pity on her after hearing her claim to have escaped from a violent father. In May 2010 Ms el-Mahroug, who had repeatedly run away from care, was taken to a Milan police station, accused of theft. But she was released after a telephone call from the prime minister during which he suggested that she was the granddaughter of Egypt’s president, Hosni Mubarak. Mr Berlusconi’s lawyers say he believed what he had been told. The prime minister him-
self said this week he had intervened to prevent a diplomatic incident. It will now be up to the judge to decide whether to accept the indictment. Assuming that she does, as seems likely, Italy could be heading for a constitutional showdown. Mr Berlusconi’s lawyers do not argue merely that the prosecutors lack a case, but that they had no right to investigate him (because they failed to refer the matter to a court for judging ministers that requires parliamentary approval to proceed). That may seem a technical point on which lawyers are best qualied to decide. But on February 3rd it was endorsed by the lower house of parliament. By 315 votes to 298, the Chamber of Deputies rejected a search application from prosecutors because the case was being overseen by the wrong court. Opposition lawmakers protested that parliament was exceeding its powers. Mr Berlusconi was said to be furious that prosecutors had not dropped the case as a result of the vote. On hearing that they had asked for his indictment, he accused them of breaking the law [and] going against parliament. His ally, Umberto Bossi of the Northern League, said it was the start of total war between the legislature and the judiciary. This is dangerous talk. It encourages suspicions that the two men are preparing the ground for an early election in which a cornered Mr Berlusconi would appeal for a mandate to neutralise the courts once and for all. The Ruby case is not his only concern. He is a defendant in two trials on nancial charges that are due to resume by March 11th. On March 5th a third case in which Mr Berlusconi is accused of nancial irregularities will go to a pre-trial hearing. The government’s 17-vote majority over the oce search suggests that, what-ever his legal diculties, the prime minister’s position in parliament is still relatively secure. Yet he relies on Mr Bossi’s continued support. And Mr Bossi has made clear that this will depend on whether Mr Berlusconi can steer through parliament a federalism bill to devolve greater spending power to local authorities. On February 3rd a panel on which supporters and opponents of the government are evenly divided threw out the federalism bill. Mr Berlusconi then tried to get it on the statute book as a decree, but President Giorgio Napolitano refused to sign it. The plan now is to resubmit the bill to parliament and use a condence vote to ram it through. Italy looks as if it is in for a torrid political spring.

In an interview with the Financial Times published Sept. 26, 2010, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack noted that recent global grain price increases do not indicate the world is looking at a repeat of the 2007-08 price hikes. Vilsack said part of the reason for the price spike was Russia’s ban on grain exports – but that global stocks are higher this year than two years ago and market prices would stabilize over time.  The grain stocks figure, at least from perspective of U.S. supplies, was backed up by U.S. Department of Agriculture’s stocks report issued Sept. 30 that showed increases compared to last year in stocks of U.S. corn, wheat and soybeans.  U.S. corn stocks of 1.71 billion bushels are up 2 percent from last year and roughly 300 million bushels more than what analysts estimated. “I believe what we’re seeing from a stocks figure supports the Secretary’s position and confirms that the United States is a reliable supplier of feed grains,” said Thomas C. Dorr, president and CEO of the U.S. Grains Council. The increase in prices is mostly due to perception, rather than the reality of the situation, he explained. “It is clear that food security and political stability are interconnected. Any upset in the global food supply chain provokes a worldwide response that goes well beyond the commodity market price.”  At a meeting in Rome last week, Jacques Diouf, director general of the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization, made a similar comment, noted that the jump in grain prices following Russia’s export ban may have been enhanced by the response of some countries and market speculation. Diouf also noted that there are adequate global supplies of grains and that this year’s global harvest may be the third highest in history.
The marketplace volatility also underscores the need for science and innovation in agriculture. It’s important to have access to all the tools available for securing stable supplies and prices in the future, said Dorr adding that agricultural biotechnology is one of our most important tools.

USGC Welcomes Gaibler as Trade Policy Director

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 23 aprile 2010

Floyd D. Gaibler has joined the U.S. Grains Council as director of trade policy at the Washington, D.C., headquarters office. In his role, he will work with government officials, members of Congress and the White House to address policy issues related to the export of U.S. feed grains and their co-products.  Prior to joining the Council, Gaibler served as Deputy Under Secretary, Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In that position, he provided leadership and guidance to programs administered by the Farm Service Agency, the Commodity Credit Corporation, the Risk Management Agency and major international and food trade issues affecting the Foreign Agricultural Service.  Gaibler brings more than 25 years of experience working on agricultural, food and trade policy issues in both the executive and legislative branches of the U.S. federal government and the private sector. Born and raised on the family farm in Farnam, Neb., Gaibler has an M.S. and B.S. in agricultural economics from the University of Nebraska.  According to Gaibler, a priority issue for his work is educating the Administration and Congress on the importance of ratifying existing trade agreements with Panama, South Korea and Colombia.  “Colombia is critical. Due to the lack of ratification of the Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement, the United States is unable to compete on a level playing field. This is because of continued import duties on feed grains and co-products and trade preferences provided to competitors as a result of Colombia’s trade agreement with South American countries,” he said. “As a result, there has been a sharp loss in U.S. export sales to Colombia, particularly in corn last year.”  Gaibler said other issues he is working on include identifying and eliminating barriers affecting the export of feed grains and co-products.  “International trade is becoming increasingly complex and important in a global economy,” he said. “U.S. agriculture must continue to maintain and nurture existing markets, while becoming more innovative and pro-active in identifying and developing new potential growth markets and opportunities.” (Written by Jodi Kiely, USGC Contributing Writer)

Bombardier reported financial results

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 4 settembre 2009

Bombardier reported financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2010. Revenues totalled $4.9 billion, the same as the corresponding period last fiscal year. Earnings before financing income, financing expense and income taxes (EBIT) totalled $313 million, compared to $371 million last fiscal year. EBIT margin reached 6.3% versus last year’s 7.5%. Net income for the second quarter ended July 31, 2009 amounted to $202 million, compared to $259 million for the same period last fiscal year. Diluted earnings per share (EPS) reached $0.11, compared to $0.14 last fiscal year. Free cash flow (cash flows from operating activities less net additions to property, plant and equipment and intangible assets) totalled $18 million for the second quarter ended July 31, 2009, compared to $99 million last fiscal year. The cash position amounted to $2.8 billion as at J uly 31, 2009, compared to $3.5 billion as at January 31, 2009. The overall backlog stands at $47.5 billion, as at July 31, 2009, compared to $48.2 billion as at January 31, 2009. On September 1, 2009, Bombardier’s Board of Directors approved a $500-million two-year unsecured revolving credit facility with a syndicate of commercial banks and other institutions, arranged by National Bank Financial Inc. This facility will be available for the general working capital needs of the Corporation.
Bombardier Aerospace’s revenues totalled $2.4 billion compared to $2.5 billion last fiscal year. EBIT reached $154 million translating into an EBIT margin of 6.4% for the second quarter ended July 31, 2009, compared to $243 million, or 9.7%, last fiscal year. Free cash flow usage totalled $10 million versus a free cash flow of $100 million for the same period last fiscal year. The level of free cash flow in the second quarter ended July 31, 2009 represents a $520-million improvement over the first quarter of the current fiscal year. Bom bardier Aerospace’s backlog totalled $19.6 billion as at July 31, 2009, compared to $23.5 billion as at January 31, 2009. During the second quarter, business aircraft cancellations continued to exceed the level of new orders. However, there are some signs of stabilization in the business aircraft industry, though historically, a lag exists between economic recovery and its positive impact on revenues. According to the latest General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) report, Bombardier Aerospace remains the leader in business aircraft both in terms of revenues and units delivered. In the commercial aircraft division, lower passenger traffic and airline profitability remain a concern, affecting the level of new orders for regional jets. Deliveries for the quarter increased to 28 aircraft compared to 23 for the same period last year. Bombardier Aerospace received orders for 15 Q400/Q400 NextGen turboprops, compared to nine for the corresponding period last year.
Bombardier Transportation revenues reached $2.5 billion for the second quarter ended July 31, 2009, an increase of $131 million over the same period last fiscal year, despite a negative currency impact of $306 million. EBIT totalled $159 million, compared to $128 million last fiscal year, while EBIT margin reached 6.2% versus 5.3% last fiscal year. Free cash flow amounted to $149 million for the second quarter ended July 31, 2009, compared to $105 million for the same period last fiscal year. The order backlog stood at $27.9 billion as at July 31, 2009, compared to $24.7 billion as at January 31, 2009.
