Premature menopause is associated with increased risk of heart problems

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 14 agosto 2022

Menopause before 40 years of age is associated with elevated risks of heart failure and atrial fibrillation, according to a study published today in European Heart Journal, a journal of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).1 The study in more than 1.4 million women found that the younger the age at menopause, the higher the risk of new-onset heart failure and atrial fibrillation.“Women with premature menopause should be aware that they may be more likely to develop heart failure or atrial fibrillation than their peers,” said study author Dr. Ga Eun Nam of Korea University College of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea. “This may be good motivation to improve lifestyle habits known to be linked with heart disease, such as quitting smoking and exercising.” Cardiovascular disease typically occurs up to 10 years later in women than men.2 Premenopausal women are thought to benefit from oestrogen’s protective effect on the cardiovascular system. The cessation of menses and subsequent decline of oestrogen levels may make women more vulnerable to cardiovascular disease.Premature menopause affects 1% of women under the age of 40 years.3 Prior studies have found a link between premature (before age 40) and early (before age 45) menopause and cardiovascular disease overall, but the evidence for heart failure or atrial fibrillation alone is limited. This study examined the associations between premature menopause, age at menopause, and incident heart failure and atrial fibrillation. Data were obtained from the Korean National Health Insurance System (NHIS), which provides health screening at least every two years and includes 97% of the population. The study included 1,401,175 postmenopausal women aged 30 years and older who completed the NHIS health check-up in 2009. Participants were followed up until the end of 2018 for new-onset heart failure and atrial fibrillation. Information was collected on demographics, health behaviours and reproductive factors including age at menopause and use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Age at menopause was categorised as below 40, 40 to 44, 45 to 49, and 50 years or older. Premature menopause was defined as having the final menstrual period before the age of 40 years. Some 28,111 (2%) participants had a history of premature menopause. In these women, the average age at menopause was 36.7 years. The average age at study enrolment for women with and without a history of premature menopause was 60 and 61.5 years, respectively. During an average follow up of 9.1 years, 42,699 (3.0%) developed heart failure and 44,834 (3.2%) developed atrial fibrillation. The researchers analysed the association between history of premature menopause and incident heart failure and atrial fibrillation after adjusting for age, smoking, alcohol, physical activity, income, body mass index, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidaemia, chronic kidney disease, coronary heart disease, HRT, and age at menarche. Women who experienced premature menopause had a 33% higher risk of heart failure 9% higher risk of atrial fibrillation compared to those who did not.The researchers then analysed the associations between age at menopause and incidence of heart failure and atrial fibrillation after adjusting for the same factors as in the previous analyses. The risk of incident heart failure increased as the age at menopause decreased. Compared with women aged 50 years and above at menopause, those aged 45 to 49, 40 to 44, and below 40 years at menopause had 11%, 23%, and 39% greater risks of incident heart failure, respectively. Similarly, the risk of incident atrial fibrillation increased as the age at menopause decreased, with 4%, 10%, and 11% higher risks for those aged 45 to 49, 40 to 44, and under 40 years at menopause, respectively, compared with women aged 50 years and above at menopause. The authors said that several factors may explain the associations between menopausal age, heart failure and atrial fibrillation, such as the drop in oestrogen level and changes in body fat distribution.

Immigration: social, cultural and historical problem

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 6 luglio 2018

Europe has, to date, reduced the economies and social status of the African peoples to the bone. First there was colonialism, then post colonialism and various forms of control, including the French one on the coins of the former colonies, assuring the tax on exports and plundering the natural resources of which the black continent is rich. In France, one in three lamps is lit thanks to uranium from Niger, while 90% of Nigerinians do not even have access to electricity. The only real obstacle to immigration to Europe is the end of the “Françafrique”, or the depletion of African nations by Macron’s France “.
Put in these terms the reasoning reason would want that the European states, that for centuries have plundered the African continent, they made a dutiful examination of conscience and offered to Africans that opportunity that the spasmodic thirst of profits, the contempt shown for their inhabitants they have ignored and today perpetuate their bad luck by not recognizing the right to live of those peoples who have only been able to arm the hands of their dictators and corrupt governments to try to continue to scrape the bottom of the barrel. Today, however, seem to want to do worse leaving to themselves immigrants who hundreds of thousands bivouac along the things of Libya and also of Tunisia by paying this state things only to Italy with the intent to transform it permanently into a field refugees with hundreds of thousands of desperate and without the possibility of job opportunities and with the real risk of destabilizing the entire country by placing it as a necessary collateral damage. Is this the Europe of solidarity? Is this Europe that would like to teach freedom, democracy turning its back on a continent of desperate people? Is this Europe that has no qualms about turning Italy into a land of conquest for the survival of barbarism? It is time to awaken consciences and to draw the attention of the public to what is in reality Europe dominated by the various business committees and unscrupulous merchants and that if they want to save the European dream of our fathers must to make a radical change starting from its leadership. More than just remembrance is needed to tackle persistent antisemitism

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 27 gennaio 2015

olocaustoInternational Holocaust Remembrance Day, on 27 January, is a chance to honour the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and to remind us of the persistent problem of antisemitism. This year FRA will join senior politicians, diplomats, global figures and experts from around the world to discuss how to deal more effectively with antisemitism, racism and xenophobia in Europe as they mark 70 years to the day on which the concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated.“Recent tragic events across Europe are poignant reminders of the pressing need to counter antisemitism that continues to haunt Europe today. We need to more than just remember the Holocaust to honour the countless victims that were brutally slain under the Nazi regime,” said FRA Director Morten Kjaerum. “We must stamp out all forms of antisemitism; from the blatant acts of vandalism of Jewish sites to the quiet acceptance of stereotypes and subtle forms of hate speech online and off. We must address anti-Jewish prejudice at every level of society and we should condemn antisemitism wherever we meet it, if we are to counter the fear that Jews continue to feel in Europe today.”FRA’s 2013 report on the first-ever comparable figures on Jewish people’s experiences of antisemitic harassment, discrimination and hate crime in the EU revealed how 66% of respondents consider antisemitism to be a major problem in their countries. 76% said the situation had become more acute over the last five years, underlining the need for urgent action by EU and its Member States to find effective ways of combating this pervasive and persistent problem.
On 27 January, FRA will launch its online training toolkit ‘Fundamental Rights and Holocaust Remembrance’ accompanied by a training workshop for European Commission officials in Brussels. The workshop objective is to reflect on remembrance and how EU officials should address contemporary fundamental rights challenges in their daily work. Participants will be led through a series of interactive working groups where they can discuss with trainers the responsibilities of civil servants. The seminar was co-developed between FRA and the Wannsee-Memorial and is the latest in a series of Holocaust and human rights education activities that have been developed by FRA.

Drugs: MEPs want harmful “legal highs” to be withdrawn quickly from the EU market

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 15 marzo 2014

drogheEU rules enabling harmful psychoactive substances, also known as “legal highs”, to be quickly withdrawn from the EU market were voted by the Civil Liberties Committee on Monday. MEPs want to protect the health and safety of young people from these substances, while ensuring that trade for industrial and commercial uses is not hindered. Criminals who breach the ban on severe risk substances could face up to 10 years in jail.
The proposed EU rules aim to tackle the emergence and rapid spread of new psychoactive substances (NPS), which imitate the effects of illicit drugs such as ecstasy and cocaine. More than 300 new substances have been detected in Europe since 1997 and the problem has worsened in recent years: the number of NPS identified between 2009 and 2012 tripled (from 24 to 73 a year). Last year, on average one new substance was detected every week in the EU. The current EU system for banning the so-called “legal highs” is not fit to respond to this growing problem.
A 2011 Eurobarometer survey showed that 5% of young people in the EU have used such substances at least once in their life, with a peak of 16% in Ireland, and close to 10% in Poland, Latvia and the UK.

Intergovernmental Report: Hate Crime

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 17 novembre 2010

New York, NY The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) today released its annual report for 2009 “Hate Crimes in the OSCE Region – Incidents and Responses,” concluding that hate crime continued to be a serious problem in many of the 56 countries in North America, Europe, and the former Soviet Union. This is the first study since the passage of the notable 2009 Ministerial Council Decision 9/09, in which participating countries upheld unanimously their commitment to collect and publicize detailed statistics on hate crime. To compliment the intergovernmental report, U.S. international rights groups Human Rights First (HRF) and Anti-Defamation League (ADL) issued a reaction paperthat highlights the failure of many of the OSCE states to fulfill commitments to combat the problem.
According to the report of the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), 2009 saw instances of intimidation, threats, vandalism, arson, assault, and murder targeted against persons or groups because of their race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation or other status. The scarcely available official government figures tracking such crimes underscores the importance of strengthening state responses to hate crimes, including through enactment of legislation, data collection, and sharing of best practices. Human Rights First maintains that authorities continue to underreport the true number of incidents, although the group acknowledges that more countries are taking steps to improve their legislative frameworks and systems of data collection, while requesting international cooperation to train police and prosecutors.
The beheading of a Kyrgyz man in the Russian Federation, the brutal murder of a Romani man and his 5-year-old son in Hungary, the stabbing of a gay couple in the United Kingdom, the wave of antisemitic violence across many countries in Europe that followed Israeli attacks in Gaza, and the stabbing of a Muslim cab driver in the United States, are among the long list of violent hate crimes that generated shock waves through entire communities.

Improve blood circulation

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 28 settembre 2009

London, Researchers in Japan have completed an intensive study which highlights the beneficial effects of blackcurrants on dark circles under the eyes. Blackcurrants have long been renowned for their benefits in helping to improve blood circulation, but less well known, however, is that this improved circulation can also help reduce the dark rings around and predominantly under the eyes. This common beauty problem has been the subject of a study using 33 healthy women by researchers in Japan at Hirosaki University. The tests proved conclusively that the consumption of blackcurrants improved the blood flow around the optical nerves and drastically reduced the effect of ‘sagging eyes’. It is thought that the effect is derived from the ability of the natural components in blackcurrants, such as anthocyanins, to increase the blood flow in the capillaries in these dark regions thereby delivering more oxygen to the tissues. This encourages them to expand, helping to reduce the dark shadowed effect. The experiment is now being repeated in the UK by the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI). Dr Derek Stewart of the SCRI commented: “We are keen to replicate this experiment here in the UK and would hope to see the same strong results as demonstrated in Japan. Blackcurrants have been proven to aid circulation in a number of previous laboratory studies so it was only a matter of time before we started utilising their benefits in aiding eye skin appearance. This goes to show that blackcurrants can offer excellent health and beauty benefits.”

Nabruka Project

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 24 luglio 2009

Cervical cancer (the cancer of the neck of the uterus ) is the second most common cancer among women worldwide, with about 500.000 cases diagnosed annually. Unlike in countries with efficient national health-care, screening programs and methods of information and control, in developing countries of  Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean the access to public health-care is much more difficult . In these areas cervical cancer is the most common form of cancer among women. 80% of  the world- wide cases are diagnosed in these countries: 400.000 out of 500.000 new cases every year. However, recent studies show that cervical cancer has become a major problem in some Eastern European countries as well. The mortality rate follows the same trend. This situation depends on the higher presence of risk factors and most of all on  lack of prevention. In western countries the incidence of cervical cancer is extremely low because of  well established mass screening programs (Pap-test).  The Pap-test is still considered the irreplaceable and precious method of  screening and secondary prevention, by itself or together with another test for HPV. It consists in examining  a sample of cells taken through a swab  from the uterine cervix, the part of the uterus which opens into the vagina. This method makes it possible to see through a microscope if there are any cancerous cells at an early stage.  In Italy migrant women without a residence permit and therefore not belonging to  the National Health System (SSN) are excluded from any prevention program. The OIKOS association and the Istituto di Anatomia Patologica e Citologia (Institute of Pathological Anatomy and Cytology ) of the Ospedali Riuniti di Bergamo offer  all “irregular” migrant women the opportunity of taking a Pap-test in a completely free  way. The project is supported by the Bergamo branch of the  Lega Italiana per la Lotta contro i Tumori (Anti-cancer League)  Since Human Papilloma Virus may cause  the cancerous transformation of  cervical cells and its five most common types are responsible for approximately 90% of cervical cancers, all the “non- negative” Pap-tests will be tested again in order to see if any  of the above mentioned five viruses is present. All the women of twenty years of age and older can take part in the program. They will be asked to sign a consent form for the treatment of their data.   According to law, the medical staff is obliged  to keep personal information secret. The results will be ready in three weeks. Women necessitating  further clinical controls and therapies will be assisted for information and support by the OIKOS doctors.  In order to be tested all women have to make an appointment by calling the telephone number 035 390650 during Oikos opening hours.
