Mobile phones to help 1.7 million small-scale farmers increase production during COVID-19 economic slowdown

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 25 agosto 2020

Some 1.7 million small-scale farmers in Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan will soon receive personalized agricultural advice through their mobile phones as a means to improve their incomes, food security and resilience to economic shocks caused by COVID-19, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) announced today. The innovative initiative, one of 11 proposals to receive initial funding under IFAD’s Rural Poor Stimulus Facility (RPSF), comes as a result of a new partnership between IFAD and Precision Agriculture for Development (PAD), a global non-profit organisation co-founded by Nobel Prize winning economist Michael Kremer. Using mobile phone technology, farmers will receive low-cost, customized advice to improve on-farm practices, input utilization, pest and disease management, environmental sustainability and access to markets.IFAD’s RPSF, which was launched recently by IFAD’s UN Goodwill Ambassadors, the actor and humanitarian Idris Elba and the model and activist Sabrina Dhowre Elba, aims to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the livelihoods and food security of rural poor people. Funding for these first 11 initiatives, amounting to US$11.2 million from the RPSF plus $5.2 million in co-financing mainly from governments and implementing partners, will benefit an estimated 6.7 million small-scale farmers in developing countries who are adversely impacted by the economic slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Among the proposals financed are two regionally focused initiatives in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa that will provide emergency livelihood support through local farmers’ organisations, and eight country-level initiatives in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Nepal, Nigeria, Palestine and Rwanda. The majority of these initiatives, which are embedded in national COVID-19 response strategies, will be implemented through IFAD project teams and other strategic partners to ensure fast delivery. The activities that will be delivered include: providing seeds and fertiliser in time for the upcoming planting season; assisting with storage and market transport; supporting local banks to provide credit; and establishing digital platforms for information, training, banking and marketing services. Working through existing project teams and IFAD country offices, the initiatives will draw on existing targeting data to identify and provide assistance to the most at-risk groups.A second round of funding, which includes 22 initiatives and amounts to $13.8 million, is expected by the end of August. Thanks to generous contributions from key partners, additional rounds of funding will follow later in the year. By Antonia Paradela

Friend of the Sea Publishes Certification Standard for Sustainable Sea Salt Production

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 1 febbraio 2020

Friend of the Sea, the preeminent certification standard for products and services that respect and protect the marine environment, announced today that it has published a certification standard for sustainable sea salt production. Sea salt production practices can have a significant impact on marine and coastal wildlife. Companies that meet the sea salt certification criteria can the Friend of the Sea eco-label on their sea salt products.“Salt is so common that we often forget that much of it comes from the sea,” said Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Sea. “Protecting the marine environment needs to include ensuring that sea salt production practices are sustainable.”The process of extracting salt from seawater has changed little in thousands of years. It involves trapping water in shallow ponds or “pans” and allowing the water to evaporate. The remaining salt can then be harvested and refined. Seasalt is used in food preparation, but also in many industrial applications like the production of chlorine.Sea salt production can affect the marine ecosystem and the well-being of both land and marine flora and fauna. This is due to the process’s tendency to disrupt the natural flow of water at the shoreline. The processes changes waterways, whichin turn potentially negatively affects feeding grounds, breeding and so forth. To meet the Friend of the Sea requirements, a sea salt producer must pass an audit. The audit examines the producers social and environmental management systems, emergency procedures, machinery and equipment, legal compliance and conservation of the ecosystem. In this latter category, the salt producer must affirm that construction of their salt pans has not destroyed any natural ecosystem. If there has been environmental damage, the salt producer must provide a mitigation plan. The audit also looks at the impact of the salt facility on the aquatic ecosystem and use of hazardous substances, along with many other factors.

Global experts call for a binding treaty to tackle poor diets

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 14 novembre 2014

Colosseo (interno)Rome.  In a global show of support for increased efforts to tackle diet-related ill health, leading health campaigners and consumer advocates from across the world have publically endorsed calls for a tobacco-style Global Convention to protect and promote healthy diets. With the world’s governments gathering in Rome this week for a conference that aims to address malnutrition in all its forms, an open letter calling for a binding treaty has been sent to the heads of the WHO and FAO, co-authored by Consumers International, the World Obesity Federation, the UK Health Forum and consumer groups in Fiji and Mexico, with the support of over 320 individuals and organisations. The letter urges greater action to protect and promote healthy diets using a similar mechanism to the Framework Convention for Tobacco Control which has already proved successful in reducing tobacco use. The letter is addressed to WHO Director General Dr Margaret Chan, and FAO Director General José Graziano da Silva, ahead of the International Conference on Nutrition (19-21 November, Rome). The letter states that ‘the governance of food production and distribution cannot be left to economic interests alone,’ and urges governments to take regulatory action to reduce children’s exposure to marketing, to impose compositional limits on the saturated fat, added sugar and sodium content of food, to bring in fiscal measures to discourage the consumption of unhealthy foods, and to require all trade and investment policies to be assessed for their potential health impacts. The authors, who have already drafted a Global Convention to Protect and Promote Healthy Diets, state such a treaty can ‘help Member States, particularly smaller nations, to maintain a robust defence of public health for their citizens.’Amanda Long, Director General of Consumers International said “Diseases like obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer are increasing in all regions of the world, most rapidly in developing countries. The policy actions that governments take now will determine whether we can turn the tide on this health crisis. A binding Global Convention offers the best hope of protecting and promoting the health of all consumers.”Dr Tim Lobstein, Policy Director for the World Obesity Federation, said “The rapid expansion of the marketing of highly processed foods is undermining health in much of the developing world, leading to rapidly rising rates of obesity, diabetes and other chronic diseases. Regulatory action to control food markets will require political courage. We should start with a Global Convention which can help Member States, particularly smaller nations, to build and maintain a robust defence of public health.”

Uranium Mining Company’s Production Continues to Grow

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 16 settembre 2011

1 Uranium ore - the principal raw material of ...

Image via Wikipedia

Late last year, Corpus Christi-based Uranium Energy Corp made a significant transition from uranium exploration company to uranium producer. Since the company began production at its South Texas facility in November 2010, it has produced over 120,000 pounds of uranium at a cost of about $15 per pound. In each successive quarter since November, production has more than doubled while production costs have declined. In recent months, some have questioned the future of the uranium market. But according to a report that was just issued by Agora Financial’s Outstanding Investments, this market is set to increase in value for investors—and UEC, the industry’s newest producer, is set to take full advantage of it. “The bottom line is that UEC is technically competent and well managed,” Outstanding Investments says. “It’s got great assets in Texas, the U.S. Southwest and overseas…despite the market gyrations, we have a great uranium play that fits into the present and future uranium story. [We] can’t say what the broad stock market is going to do, but the current troubles have handed us a great company at a deep discount.” What else is working in UEC’s advantage? According to the report, “The three key ingredients of a successful mining project are people, people and people. And it’s safe to say that UEC has people. UEC is the product of a sharp guy, [CEO] Amir Adnani, with whom [we’ve] had some great discussions over the past couple of years.” UEC’s most recent operating results, the report says, show an aggregate production at an average cost of about $15 per pound. By comparison, one industry giant has average production costs of over $32 per pound, while it costs another over $50 to deliver each pound. So even in the tightest of markets for uranium, says the report, UEC has a dramatic cost advantage over the competition. “The share price is simply not reflective of the value here, and in [our] view, this company is selling in the bargain-basement range…the share price is down while the stock has strong trading volume and a solid set of market makers,” the report continues. “Based on the company’s fundamentals, [we] believe that UEC is poised for a strong rebound when the markets settle down. There are handsome gains to be made here.”www.uraniumenergy.com

Clodronate for the treatment of Osteoarthritis

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 17 agosto 2009

Positive results for Abiogen Pharma. Dichloromethylene bisphosphonate (Cl2MBP), or clodronate, is a compound which can, potentially, counteract some pathogenetic factors of osteoarthritis. In the osteoarthritis, hydroxyapatite crystals also appear to play an important role for the progression of the inflammatory damage. Clodronate, as other bisphosphonates, shares the activities of an inorganic pyrophosphate: high affinity for solid phase calcium phosphate and, consequently, for hydroxyapatite. Nevertheless, additional actions on metabolic events in cells involved in the turnover of cartilage, as well as on inflammatory reactions, have been observed. Experimental reports show that clodronate is capable of stimulating the biosynthesis of collagen and proteoglycans and to inhibiting both prostaglandins production in calvaria cells cultures and interleukin 1 synthesis in vivo. Moreover, clodronate showed anti-inflammatory properties in adjuvant arthritis model, and reduced free radical production by human activated neutrophils. These experimental results represent the rationale for testing the clinical efficacy and tolerability of locally administered clodronate, in the treatment of osteoarthritis. Some pilot clinical trials have also demonstrated the safety and the potential effectiveness of clodronate in knee osteoarthritis. At present, Abiogen Pharma is commencing phase II clinical development, with the aim of confirming these  preliminary positive results. Abiogen Pharma S.p.A has a history of research in Osteoarticular Metabolism, obtaining great success with the discovery of molecules from the Bisphosphonates ( Etidronate, Clodronate, Alendronate, Neridronate).

The Economics of Chromium (11th Edition)

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 7 giugno 2009

Demand for chromite increased by an annual average rate of 4% for the period 2000 to 2008, with ferrochrome consumption increasing by the same amount.  However, the onset of the economic downturn from mid 2008 has seen demand for chromium plummet, with prices following a similar path. Ferrochrome consumption fell by 3.5% in 2008, in year-on-year terms, as major Asian and European consumers reduced orders to a minimum in an attempt to run down inventories, as demand from end-users declined sharply. Export prices for ferrochrome have fallen by 68% for the ten months to May 2009, as demand from stainless steel, the main end-use for ferrochrome has collapsed.  In response to weakening demand and falling prices producers have cut production, in some cases ceasing operations all together.  Around 70% of world ferrochrome production capacity was suspended in the first quarter of 2009, with the Xstrata-Merafe joint venture operating at 20% of capacity since December 2008, while Samancor Chrome suspended all production in the first quarter of 2009.  With the sudden disintegration of end-user demand, the forecast is for demand for both ferrochrome and chromite to fall in 2009.  Demand for ferrochrome will fall by around 24% in 2009, year-on-year, on the back of the 3.55% fall in consumption in 2008.  However, a recovery could begin to materialise from the fourth quarter this year, as the global economic situation begins to ease. Global stainless steel production has been driven in recent years by emerging markets, with China leading the way.  Double-digit GDP growth of recent years has helped fuel China’s growing demand for all commodities, with Chinese producers contributing some 80% of the increase in global stainless steel output since 2000. Demand for chromium chemicals has declined in recent years, as environmental concerns have seen tightening legislation limits its use in the two main end-uses, leather tanning and metal finishing.  Global demand peaked at around 1Mt (sodium dichromate equivalent) in 2001, falling by 32% to 680,000t in 2008. Going forward, demand for chromium chemicals is going to be modest at best, growing at an annual average rate of 2.5-3% over the next five years. Ferrochrome prices were negotiated at US¢69/lb in the second quarter of this year, almost 70% lower than the US¢213/lb peak set in July 2008.  Prices for chromite have fallen by 73% to US$140/t from its US$520/t peak in July 2008, while prices for chromium chemicals and chromium metal have both fallen by almost 45%. Given the weak outlook chromite and ferrochrome demand, prices are forecast to be much lower than those set in 2008.  Ferrochrome prices are forecast to average US¢77-80/lb this year, as end-use demand remains depressed.  However, prices in the fourth quarter of 2009 could increase on the back some restocking.  Chromite prices are likely to follow a similar pattern, with average prices for 2009 at US$135/t, with a potential 20-30% increase for 2010 as demand returns. http://www.roskill.com/reports/chromium

Expo: Jonathan Monk The Deflated Inflated

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 20 maggio 2009

deflatedLondon Opening until 13/6/, 2009  Lisson Gallery  29 & 52-54  Lisson Gallery is proud to present new work by British artist Jonathan Monk. The exhibition The Deflated Inflated playfully addresses the status of contemporary sculpture, while taking on additional connotations related to the high and lows of the art market. Monk has become known for his original reflections on seminal works and concepts from conceptual and minimal art. His works embrace whimsical references, tailored alterations, irreverent imitations or updates, sometimes with a personal or autobiographical angle, of artists including Sol LeWitt, Ed Ruscha, Alighiero e Boetti and Bruce Nauman.  In addition to the sculptures, Monk has produced a series of photorealist paintings that record various stages in the fabrication process of the stainless steel works, from the production of a cast in clay to the welding and polishing of the metal structure. The decision to use the medium of painting ratheer than the original photographic documentation contributes to demystify the status of the original sculpture as self-contained surface. ‘The Two O’s from Jeff Koons Used as Eyes’ (2009), five works in bright colored neon, complement the project, a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the status of the artist as brand.  The Deflated Inflated runs parallel to The Inflated Deflated at Casey Kaplan Gallery in New York, May 7 – June 20, 2009. The artist is currently presenting The Rew-Shay Hood Project Part II at Artspace, San Antonio, Texas. Monk has exhibited extensively since the 1990s and his work is held in public and private collections internationally. Recent solo exhibitions include Time Between Spaces at Palais de Tokyo and the Muse’e d’Art Moderne, Paris, 2008; Tramway, Glasgow, 2008; Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow etc. at Kunstverein Hannover, Kunstmuseum St Gallen, Kunsthalle Nurnberg, Leiterin Haus am Waldsee, Berlin from 2006-07; A continuous Project Altered Daily at ICA, London, 2006.
