High-Level Dialogue on Diagnosis and Treatment of Paediatric HIV

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 11 dicembre 2018

Cardinal Peter Turkson, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development, will convene a dialogue on Diagnosis and Treatment of Paediatric HIV at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in the Vatican on 6-7 December 2018. He will address CEOs of pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies as part of the Holy See’s drive to assure optimal drugs formulations and testing tools for infants, children and adolescents living with HIV.
Building on consultations in April and May 2016 and November 2017, the meeting, fully titled High-Level Dialogue to Assess Progress on and Intensify Commitment to Scaling Up Diagnosis and Treatment of Paediatric HIV, will be organised by the co-chairs of the AIDS Free Working Group of the Start Free, Stay Free and AIDS Free Framework, PEPFAR, UNAIDS, in collaboration with partners of the AIDS Free Working Group, including Caritas Internationalis and the World Council of Churches-Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance. As well as leaders of major diagnostic and pharmaceutical companies, multilateral organisations, governments, regulators, faith-based and other organizations directly engaged in services to children living with HIV, and other key stakeholders, will participate in the consultation. The main aim of the meeting is to address bottlenecks that limit access to Early Infant Diagnostic products and programs and to scale up strategies that can help quickly identify HIV-exposed children and link them to testing and treatment services. In addition, the Dialogue will be an opportunity to assess progress on achieving the commitments made by participants in 2017.As the global community continues to make significant progress on scaling up access to adult HIV and AIDS testing and treatment services, more than 120,000 children continue to die each year from AIDS-related causes, and over 13,000 children are newly infected each month.
Participants in the Dialogue will agree to a plan of action to introduce and scale-up optimized diagnostics and case-finding strategies for HIV. Also, to intensify commitments in key challenging areas, including formulations development, and regulatory approval of optimal formulations and diagnostic products.Caritas Internationalis has taken strong responsibilities and commitments over mobilizing our network. We work with communities to help build treatment literacy and expand access to antitretroviral drugs among children. We also raise awareness in global fora about the unmet diagnostic and treatment needs of children with HIV.
Caritas members confirmed recently the need to continue to work at a global and national level for the wellbeing of children living with HIV. At the Dialogue, we will reaffirm our commitment and pledge to expand our efforts to help diagnose and treat those children.

The Treaty of Rome: 60 years for the promotion of peace, solidarity and cooperation

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 27 marzo 2017

europeOn 25 March 1957, the Treaty of Rome established the European Economic Community. This was the first of major steps in implementing the Schuman declaration of 1950, which called for the pooling of coal and steel production with the view of creating economic stability and preventing another great war.The founding of the European Economic Community 60 years ago was a significant decision for its six founding Member States—Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and West Germany—in deepening their relationship and commit to cooperation at a European level, which led to the building up of the European Union. The Treaty sought to “lay the foundations of an ever-closer union among the peoples of Europe.”In the generations since the signing of this historic treaty, Member Churches of the Conference of European Churches have accompanied this process and worked for a Europe characterized by peace, solidarity, and reconciliation. In the post-World War II era, the churches saw European integration as an opportunity for the flourishing of Europe and its people, and to develop a new relationship with the world beyond Europe.
In the era of the Treaty of Rome the Conference of European Churches was born. With its distinctive mission to bridge the divide between East and West cleaved by the Iron Curtain, CEC brought into conversation churches in European countries separated by different political, economic, and social systems.Today, the achievements brought about by this impetus are at stake. Europe is confronted with multiple crises and confidence in the European project is eroding. The European Union, and our continent as a whole, needs courageous decisions and a renewed orientation to its future as a peace project and community of values. In this spirit, the Conference of European Churches launched a broad process reflection with its Member Churches through its open letter “What Future for Europe?” and a series of regional consultations leading to our 15th General Assembly in Novi Sad (Serbia) in 2018.“While Europe faces challenges relating to mass migration, economic instability, growing Euroscepticism, and outbursts of violence, we must also remember the goods of integration and cooperation,” remarked CEC General Secretary Fr Heikki Huttunen. “The era inaugurated by the Treaty of Rome has brought about freedom of travel, work, and study, and contributed to the overcoming of dictatorships and the promotion of democracy throughout Europe. We must also recall original vision of the founders of social equality throughout the EU as we continue to work for just social and economic conditions for all Europeans.”Together the churches in Europe are shaping a vision for our common future and in commemorating the historic Treaty of Rome we express again our commitment to a “humane, social and sustainable Europe at peace with itself and its neighbours in which human rights and solidarity prevail.” (CEC Constitution). Social, humanitarian affairs and human rights

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 21 agosto 2009

Year after year, the General Assembly allocates to its Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs Committee, commonly referred to as the “Third Committee”, agenda items relating to a range of social, humanitarian affairs and human rights issues that affect peoples all over the world. An important part of the Committee’s work focuses on the examination of human rights questions, including reports of the special procedures of the newly established Human Rights Council.  In October 2008, the Committee will hear and interact with 25 such special rapporteurs, independent experts, and chairpersons of workings groups of the Human Rights Council. The Committee also discusses the advancement of women, the protection of children, indigenous issues, the treatment of refugees, the promotion of fundamental freedoms through the elimination of racism and racial discrimination, and the promotion of the right to self- determination.  The Committee also addresses important social development questions such as issues related to youth, family, ageing, persons with disabilities, crime prevention, criminal justice, and drug control. At the sixty-second session of the General Assembly, the Third Committee considered 67 draft resolutions, more than half of which were submitted under the human rights agenda item alone.  These included a number of so-called country-specific resolutions on human rights situations. Under the chairmanship of H.E. Mr. Frank Majoor, the Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to the United Nations, the Third Committee is expected to consider in 2008 a similar number of draft resolutions.
